he city has once again revoked the Lower East Side permits for an adult sports league residents say was using school properties to run an “alcohol-driven” social league. ZogSports, a co-ed league for young professionals in cities across the U.S., had been hosting several kickball games each week at MO25 145 at Stanton St. and P.S.142, at 100 Attorney St.

Not only do these local properties belong to the Lower East Side Preparatory High School and P.S.142, kids were reportedly even getting displaced off of the playgrounds during the scheduled games. Marge Feinberg, a Dept. of Education (D.O.E.) spokesperson, said in a statement to The Villager: “The permits for ZogSports were rescinded last month. They are a for-profit business and we provide permits to use our

space to non-profit organizations.” ZogSports had replaced a previous league, NYC Social, which also eventually had their permit revoked. According to local residents, NYC Social encouraged players to go to local bars afterward to drink, and one bar even had a competition for which team “showed the most spirit” at the bar, which would result in free ZOGSPORTS, continued on p. 23

THE WESTBETH Beautification Committee, also known as the Westbeth Flea Market/Bargains Galore, returns for the “Westbeth Book Sale,” planned for next Fall. A lawsuit by faculty, students and alumni is trying to halt the move to end a 150-year tradition of free tuition at the privately funded college. AN ANONYMOUS TENANT told The Villager that after a meeting at Westbeth, construction has started at the artist housing center, and windows in the A section will be covered with plastic for 5-9 days. Tenants will not be able to run AC or even open windows during this time, at one of the hottest times of the year. The windows undergoing construction face the river, and are reportedly very sunny during the day. Management didn’t provide a good answer for why construction was starting during the summer, and couldn’t wait until September. The entire

WHILE THE VILLAGE is often recognized as the birthplace of the gay rights movement, many are unaware that it is also one of the cornerstones of the children’s rights movement. The Vincent J. Fontana Center for Child Protection, who pioneered research and development in this field, will be closing soon due to financial reasons. The center, founded by Dr. Vincent J. Fontana and Dr. Mel Schneiderman, was dedicated to understanding, detecting, treating and preventing child abuse and neglect. In recent years, they have investigated the most effective mental health treatments so the best quality of care can be provided. However, one of the co-founders of the Vincent J. Fontana Center recently helped resurrect the American Professional Society on the Abuse of Children’s New York state chapter. APSAC-NY will continue the Fontana Center’s mission after it closes by researching the best practices, organizing conferences and trainings, advocating at local and state levels, and disseminating information to the public. n the Lower East Side partying and emergency preparedness can go hand-in-hand. A DJ presided over an Aug. 8 soiree held in East River Park as a collective “thank you” to local residents for their input in the Big U project — the proposed storm protections for the U-shaped section of southern Manhattan starting with most of the East Side. Local dancers and spoken word artists performed as residents watched and mingled with representatives ranging from the Red Cross to Good Old Lower East Side [GOLES], which helped Rebuild by Design organize the approximately three-hour event. “It’s really important to have you operating with us on the design for the Big U, which is a plan that will receive federal money to connect the waterfront back to the community and to also protect you from future storms,” said Tara Eisenberg, a research coordinator at Rebuild by Design, which formed after Hurricane Sandy devastated parts of the city two years ago. The $335 million project will construct a “living barrier” integrating berms from 10- to 20-feet tall into the park from Montgomery St. to E. 23rd St. Federal funds will pay for the project which is just one out of 157 projects in a $3.7 billion city effort to mitigate climate change in low lying areas such as the Lower East Side and East Village. Planners anticipate that within four years the Big U will stretch from W. 57 St., south to the Battery, all the way to E. 42nd St. Residents were at first skeptical about the idea of changing the beloved park, but gradually began to trust the Big U team, offering suggestions as to how the project could increase accessibility to the riverfront by increasing pathways across F.D.R. Drive, according to Lilah Mejia, disaster relief coordinator for GOLES. “They literally took those ideas and incorporated them into the berm,” she said. Fears remain however, that a reinvigorated park, protected by the Big U, might invite increased attention from real estate developers in the coming years at the expense of public housing residents, she added. “I’m still kind of hesitant. I’m still kind of scared because I don’t know what that means,” she said. “We all know this community became gentrified rather quickly.” Such concerns though did not play prominently within the event. Next to them was Pedro Barry, who deployed a table and clipboard for Operation Hope, which helps people prepare for the financial implications of natural disasters, he said. He got more than 20 people at the event to

sign up for more information about the FEMA-affiliated program. “The piece that people tend to lack on is the financial piece,” he said. “They go into the hole, they go into debt. We help them navigate the process a little bit faster.” Native fauna will figure prominently within the park once construction on the project begins. A nursery in Staten Island is busy raising salt-resistant species which will also absorb a significant amount of storm water once they are planted in the park, said Steven Handel, an ecologist for the project who attended the event. Despite the visibility of the Big U

team about 15 feet away, some residents still had yet to hear that their beloved park would be the site of construction in the near future. Baruch Houses resident Miriam Capo said she heard about the event through her Tai Qi class which performed at the event. She and her friend Dora Morreno had no idea the event concerned flood mitigation efforts. However, she welcomed efforts to address the vulnerable situation residents such as herself faced when the full wrath of Sandy caught the community unprepared in 2012. “By doing these events, it’s perfect,” she said. “But they need to distribute the information a lot more.” TheVillager.com

They grappled with the problem of soaring rents and other costs that are driving favorite local places out of business. Other changes, in neighborhoods and taste, complicated the agenda. Among the more than 100 people in the audience at Judson Memorial Church were a few restaurant owners, including Tom Birchard, owner of Veselka on Second Ave. and Leslie McEachern, owner of Angelica Kitchen on E. 12th St. Sietsema, who regretted the closing last January of Gray’s Papaya on Sixth Ave. at Eighth St., reintroduced a proposal that he made then on the Eater website. He suggested that a city commission could develop a list of up to 30 restaurants deemed worthy of saving. The commission could help owners negotiate leases or help find appropriate successors. Although San Francisco, London and Paris have programs to help keep historic establishments in place, the proposal seemed unlikely to work in New York. “Who would you have on the commission, how would you decide which places to help?” Sheraton asked. “I can’t imagine any landlord agreeing to abide [by such a negotiated rent].” Sky-high rents are not the only factor in restaurant closings, Perl said. Second Avenue Deli, which moved out of its original East Village location,

was very close to an agreement with the landlord, but chose to move because its customer base had changed. “And I believe its employees are not unionized in the new location,” he said.

A second-generation restaurateur said that last year an entire side of her block had empty storefronts, vacated by restaurants. City real estate taxes, rising 500 percent over a few years in some cases, and higher city water bills are big factors in restaurant closings. Nevertheless, one owner in the audience who didn’t want to identify her restaurant except to say it was in the West Village, said, “The games our landlord played over the past 15 years are outrageous. Then we got a revised city water bill that knocked us out.” The West Village owner, a second-generation restaurateur, said that last year an entire side of her block had empty storefronts, vacated by restaurants. “They can keep places vacant for years at a time,”

Sietsema said. “A lot of landlords don’t like restaurants or food retailers in their properties,” Perl noted. “There are problems with deliveries and garbage.” Sietsema especially regretted the recent closing of Chez Brigitte, an 11-seat restaurant on Greenwich Ave. that served simple but elegant food at reasonable prices. Chain restaurants were cited as a cause of the closing of local places. “I see no problem in banning chains,” declared Sietsema, citing the ability of zoning to regulate real estate uses. But others pointed out that tourists are attracted to places that are familiar, and chain restaurants are familiar to everyone. Perl noted that local restaurants often fall out of favor after their original owners let managers run the places and the quality deteriorates, so the best way for a restaurateur to stay in business is to be there in person and maintain standards. Local restaurants also face the same problem as other small independent businesses. For example, Sietsema regretted the demise of a favorite gift shop, Mxyplyzyk, on Greenwich Ave. “I spoke to the owner, who still does mail order business from New Jersey. He said that new people in the Village don’t go shopping in local stores anymore,” Sietsema said. “It’s true that the neighborhood is changing. Just look at all the Fresh Direct trucks in the Village,” he added. “This is the beginning of a conversation,” said Karen Lowe, director of East Village and Special Projects for G.V.S.H.P., who moderated the forum. The society turns 50 this week.

Barrow St. building to be converted into single family homes BY SERGEI KLEBNIKOV

Department of Buildings permit, filed on July 7, calls for a large-scale project to “convert existing multiple dwellings into a single family residence.” After receiving a tip, Curbed NY first reported on the permit situation, which is unknown to many local residents. The West Village walk-up at 54 Barrow St. is made up of 20 apartments, across five floors. The redbrick structure, located between Bedford and Bleecker Sts., was built in 1910, and still has several tenants paying rent in the $3,000-$4,000 per month range. The architect listed on the permit is Jose Ramirez, who is known for several townhouses, summer houses, commercial buildings and apartments that he has previously designed. The cost of the project is estimated at $480,000 for changes to the 9,578-square-foot property. However, the building is owned by an entity listed as 54 Barrow Street Associates, who bought the building in 2012 for $8.2 million. The address for 54 Barrow Street Associates is listed as 504 E. 12th St., a rental building that was part of many bought by Jared Kushner in 2013, according

to Curbed NY’s article. The contact name listed on the permit is Patrick Crosetto, the COO of Kushner Companies, Kushner’s real estate group.

He expressed a “concern about the changing nature of the neighborhood,” and described seeing “previous examples of similar situations in the Village.” Berman stated that he had nothing against wealthy people choosing to live in, and be part of, the neighborhood, but expressed concern that many units of housing are getting used up — especially when some of them are viewed as affordable. Jim Drougas, owner of Unoppressive Non-Imperialist Bargain Books at 34 Carmine St., said that he wasn’t originally aware of the situation. However, he described it as “one more example of the super-rich

He is also the publisher of The New York Observer. The real estate mogul has made a name for himself in the Village – “and not in a good way,” according to an article in the NY Daily News,

The independent bookstore is stocked with a floor-to-ceiling collection of personally-selected works at remarkably low prices, and was a 2014 Village Award Winner. “It would be one more step towards the middle class joining the revolution,” Drougas said of the situation. “I’m counting on them when the time comes.” Nearby local resident, Patrick Shields, also expressed concern at the filed permit. “With buildings like 54 Barrow St., if it started life as a tenement with rental units, it should stay that way,” he said. He added that if information on who is going to live there is vague, the permit should be denied. On July 25th, the Department of Buildings reportedly did just that, and marked it as disapproved. However, permits can be temporarily turned down before later getting the go ahead, Berman noted. Regardless, the intentions for 54 Barrow St. remain unclear. Kushner could be attempting to combine the apartments and sell the building for a huge profit, or the building could serve as Crosetto’s new personal home.

anny Roth, who opened Café Wha? in the basement of an old MacDougal St. horse stable in 1959 and became where comedy and music stars got their starts, died July 25 in his home in Ojai, Calif. He was 94. Under Roth’s aegis, the likes of Bob Dylan, Jimmy Hendrix, Dave Van Rock, Woody Allen, Richard Prior, Lenny Bruce and Bill Cosby played to their first audiences. Mary Travers, later the Mary of Peter Paul and Mary, was a waitress there. An ad for Café Wha? in its heyday had a picture of a bearded man wearing a beret and dark glasses and the phrase, “Greenwich Village’s Swingingest Coffee House.” The takings from the basket passed among the audience were at first the only pay, except for free meals, for the performers who included jazz musicians, conga drummers, folk singers,

It was a cold Tuesday hootenany on Jan. 24, 1961, when a 19-year-old Bob Dylan blew in from Minnesota and wowed the patrons at Café Wha?, according to a New York Times obituary by Douglas Martin. ‘Star Wars’ comes to life in Washington Square Park BY YANNIC RACK

The Lightsaber Battle NYC may not sound like a typical feature of Washington Square Park, where you’re usually more likely to find classical concerts. But Bracken, a 27-year-old native New Yorker, has organized the Star Wars-themed get-together for the past six years through his events company Newmindspace, which he founded with partner Lori Kufner in 2005. The first Lightsaber Battle looked quite different from the LED spectacle that took place last weekend though. “We would give out like 1,000 cardboard tubes that we had spray-painted with neon spraypaint. And we had generators and big black lights that we shone onto the paint. It was very complicated and I’m really glad that we don’t do it anymore,” Bracken said before the event, which also features an after-party. Bracken estimated that about 1,500 people had shown up, more than in past years. One thousand pre-reserved lightsabers were distributed from the back of a van for $10 apiece. Everybody else brought their own. One of them, 24-year-old Eric Capuano, works at FreshDirect, but pursues lightsaber combat as a “passionate hobby.” He doesn’t describe himself as a die-hard Star Wars fan, and indeed not everybody at the park seemed to be counting the days until the next Star Wars installment will hit theaters next December. Bracken said that he also recognizes a lot of people from his other events, like the annual Bubble Battle

CW decided to take title to the massive East Side apartment complex through a deed in lieu of foreclosure, rather than holding a foreclosure auction and searching for new owners. Tenants claimed that the owners cheated them, since CW reportedly inflated the mortgage by $1 billion, and none of it went to lower-level lenders. Several large developers and investor groups already showed interest in buying the property, while the dispute between management and tenants threatened to boil over. A tenant-led bid against CWCapital called for the preservation of affordable housing. The plan would allow tenants the option to purchase or continue to rent existing units, but at affordable rates. After canceling the foreclosure auction, CW agreed to hold off on a sale for two months while working with local officials and representatives of Mayor de Blasio, who has come to the rescue of tenants as part of his affordable housing program. After local elected officials announced that CWCapital would work with the Mayor’s Office last month, officials at housing lenders Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae agreed not to finance an outside takeover until affordability issues were ironed out. According to Susan Steinberg, the chairperson of the complex’s tenants association, Senator Charles Schumer and Congressmember Carolyn Maloney were responsible for working to get the two mortgage giants to hold off on any potential purchase. Without federal backing, it would be difficult for any company to finance a purchase of the complex worth billions of dollars. On July 15, de Blasio met with tenant leaders and local politicians to plan a long-term solution to protect affordability. Among those also in attendance were Borough President Gale Brewer, State Senator Brad Hoylman and Assemblymember Brian Kavanagh. The midafternoon meeting lasted about 45 minutes and took place in Garodnick’s apartment. De Blasio was “extremely receptive,” according to Garodnick. “The mayor understands what we’re looking for — he’s committed to affordable housing,” Steinberg added. The T.A. chairperson added that they are looking forward to having a seat at the table as the Mayor’s Office continues working to find common ground with the other side. “CWCapital seems to be amenable to working with the city,” she stated. Several meetings have reportedly occurred, but no specific plan has been developed. The de Blasio administration must now find a way both to make a sale feasible and preserve housing for the middle class. Roughly 6,000 units of Stuyvesant Town and Peter Cooper Village’s 11,232 apartments are considered “affordable,” according to Capital New York. If de Blasio succeeds here, it will be considered a significant victory for his 10-year affordability plan. Stuyvesant Town and Peter Cooper Village make up a “high-profile community that represents the heart and soul of middle-class housing in New York City,” Garodnick said. “We can’t allow it to slip out of our grasp.”

Community rallies to protect ‘Mosaic Man’ tiles on Astor Pl. BY YANNIC RACK

amous East Village artist Jim “Mosaic Man” Power has been rallying support to save some of his iconic lamp poles from being removed during upcoming restoration work on Astor Place. Power, known for his East Village “Mosaic Trail” of tile-encrusted lampposts, has reportedly been putting up signs alerting passersby that his artworks are endangered, starting roughly two weeks ago. The Village Alliance has been getting calls from concerned residents as well, according to executive director William Kelley, who contacted the city Department of Transportation, resulting in a commitment on the D.O.T.’s part to salvage and store the poles until they can be re-incorporated into the streetscape at a later date. The planned Astor Place redesign will commence this fall and see the temporary removal and storage in a D.O.T. facility of seven of Power’s mosaic poles, according to an emailed statement from the city agency. “The D.O.T. is working closely with the artist Jim Power and our

partners City Lore and the Village Alliance to incorporate the light poles into the new plaza design,” the statement further read. “I had a meeting with Jim to tell him that we are interested in helping to save them,” Kelley said on Tuesday, adding that there is no immediate danger to the artworks. He said the signs started appearing about two weeks ago, but that “nothing precipitated that” in terms of specific developments in the construction works. Jim Power couldn’t be reached for comment. “I think it’s going to be several months before D.O.T. actually gets to that area with the project, they’re working on the Cooper Square area right now, which is further south. But be that as it may, at least my understanding is that D.O.T. will not throw them away, they’re going to salvage them,” Kelley said. Last year, two of Power’s works — his F.D.N.Y. 9/11 tribute on Astor Pl. and another work on St. Marks Pl. — were both removed without notice by the D.O.T., although both were later restored. A 56 year-old man was not willing to give up when a NYPD traffic agent sought to tow his car on Aug. 6. He got into his car as a tow truck prepared to remove it from nearby the Southeast corner of Washington and Gansevoort Sts. at about 8:25 a.m. He then attempted to drive away. While a police report did not state why, the man struck her with a closed fist causing swelling and bruises to the 24 year-old woman. Two sanitation workers hanging out at 2 Bloomfield St. at about 7:10 a.m. on Aug. 3 got into a verbal dispute which escalated to violence, according to police. One of them started trash talking by calling the other man “a rat” then threw a metal chair, causing a laceration on the 52 year-old victim’s left leg. The perpetrator then refused to go to his office following the incident, according to police. ighty years ago, a bird’s eye view of Jackson Square Park from Eighth Ave. shows a very different scene than the leafy, well-appointed park of today. A photo from Sept. 13, 1934 shows trees that were only saplings and no grand fountain. It seems that children may still have used it as a playground, though there were no swing sets or jungle gyms. The only entrance to the park was on Greenwich Ave. There were no crossing lights — and were those trolley tracks in the middle of the street still working, or covered over and out of commission? Above the no-longer-extant James Butler store — apparently a grocer’s — a billboard was hawking Camels, with a catchy slogan not readable due to the angle. The other businesses on the strip are also long gone, with the hip Art Bar now occupying the former barbershop space.

As for the park, it’s slated for a major renovation soon. When she was in office, former City Council Speaker Christine Quinn, who represented the district that contains the park, allocated $800,000 for its rehab. Although a down-on-their-luck element used to hang out (in recent decades) along Jackson Square’s northern edge, police have “moved them along”

Richard Nixon — no, not the former president, just another guy named Richard Nixon, with a beer habit — used to be a regular there, but has disappeared. “Richard Nixon’s gone. No one knows what happened to him,” said Detective Jimmy Alberici, Sixth Precinct Community Affairs Officer.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Does not like Citi Bike To The Editor: A recent Daily News editorial said Citi Bike “has entered a death spiral” because “36 percent of its initial subscribers had chosen not to renew” their annual memberships. Pedestrians everywhere are cheering. Citi Bikers have been as law-breaking as other bikers — riding on sidewalks, in Washington Square Park, the wrong way on streets, ignoring traffic lights, etc., etc. And there’s a hilarious ad for a storage company I saw on the subway: “Bloomberg’s gone. You can put the bike away now.” New Yorkers are voting with their feet — literally. We want those huge bike racks off our sidewalks, out of crowded intersections blocking crosswalks. Praying for Petro peace To The Editor: Re “Petrosino plaintiffs roll out bikesite appeal” (news article, July 31): I am not a member of the Petrosinoarea community, but have watched this closely, both in person, and via the YouTube videos. It seems to me that there are multiple problems needing to be solved: Restoring a public art area, allowing for bike-share use, and correcting cyclist bad behavior. Personally, I’d like to see this crisis used to increase the number of bikeshare units. This standoff can’t last forever, and both sides, however right or wrong, need to get beyond the total-victory mindset. Too many Downtown issues have been lost completely, on principle.

But it is a tiny park, and compromise must happen. There is every opportunity here to make maximal beneficial use of minimal space. Should the city prevail in court, it will be very telling to see if it would take a step back from its clear incursion, and respond to such a compromise. It would be even more telling to see if the city would be willing to begin to experiment with more creative bike-dock placement. What better laboratory than Petrosino? If they cut the number of bike-share units in Petrosino by moving further north, rededicate a public art area, and then add the Petrosino Friends “Lafayette north of Spring” idea on top of it, everyone gets to walk away with something. ast September, on a perfect late summer afternoon, as I walked up Hudson St., I saw Larry sitting on his second-floor fire escape reading. He was wearing shorts and a T-shirt and looked comfortable. I debated whether to say hello because he — always the English professor — was immersed in his book. I hadn’t run into him in the neighborhood lately. Nor had I seen him on campus. Classes had just resumed at Borough of Manhattan Community College, where we both taught remedial English, but in different departments. I decided to shout up, “Hi, Larry.” I yelled and waved. He looked down to the sidewalk and waved back “Hey, Kate.” He seemed glad to see me. When I first met Larry in the summer of 2006, I was going through the painful breakup of my 26year lesbian relationship. My ex had cut me off cold and I could barely function. Larry was also going through a divorce, so we were kindred spirits. We commiserated in the campus cafe over coffee. Back then, Larry and I worked at the college as certified readers who scored the entrance essays of incoming students to determine their class placement. We were adjuncts, who needed the extra cash. For me, going into work to read papers was a distraction from sitting home crying and obsessing about my ex. Even though he was straight and I’m gay, we bonded during that awful summer when we hung out together during our breaks. It felt comforting to talk with someone else going through an inexplicable breakup. Neither of us had the answers we craved. “Why is she doing this to me,” I asked, “when she says she still loves me?” “Why is my wife being so difficult?” asked Larry, who struck me as a good father. At least I was not dealing with custody and alimony issues. As years passed, our careers evolved: We were both hired full time and now had real salaries. After I stopped scoring essays (our main meeting place) we saw each other less often on campus. But Larry was also my neighbor in the far West Vil-

lage, where he had moved after his divorce. He lived on Hudson St. above Dublin, the Irish pub, where he hung out greeting me from the bar’s open window on the street. I’d run into him Saturday mornings at the Abingdon Square Greenmarket, where we discussed the merits of heirloom tomatoes. I’d see him grocery shopping in D’Ag’s on Bethune St. Larry was tall, lanky, athletic, with close-cropped gray hair. He wore jeans and cowboy boots, played basketball and always rode his bike to work. On Rate My Professors, a student wrote, “He’s so good-looking you will be distracted.” About two weeks after I saw Larry on the fire escape, the cleaning woman came into my office, agitated. She told me everyone on campus was upset about the professor found dead in his apartment. She didn’t know his name but he had gray hair and rode a bike. I flipped through possibilities: Who cy-

cled to work? Was it Larry? But I’d just seen him. I raced from my office to find out. Over the next few days, I picked up pieces of the story: Larry had cancer but decided to forgo treatment. He’d watched his father suffer through the same illness and did not want to endure that diminished quality of life. He kept his condition quiet but was clearly not well when he returned to work in September. During his last classes, he was so weak that students asked, “Professor, do you want us to call an ambulance?” He refused. When their teacher did not show up for the next meeting, concerned students went to the department office. After administrators called Larry’s phone and got no answer, they contacted the N.Y.P.D., who gained access to his apartment. I was stunned as I heard variations of this news unfolding. But, mostly, I was grateful I had decided to interrupt when I saw Larry reading on his fire escape. I thought I was saying hello, but I realize now I was saying goodbye. A month later, I was walking up Hudson St. and I saw a carton of books on the sidewalk. An avid reader, I’ve always rummaged through piles of discards left on a stoop. When I pulled out the stash, I discovered lots of new texts, literature and writing. And I thought to myself, “This person must be an English teacher.” Then it hit me: I was standing in front of Larry’s building. I took a brand-new three-volume boxed set of world literature. I also took “The Counterculture Reader” and a book on writing research papers. The latter is in my office at the college and the literature collections are on my bookshelves in my loft. After I rescued these books, I saw workers renovating Larry’s old place. I felt sad and turned down Bank St. recalling the summer he helped rescue me.

In 1967, Roth hired an obscure New Jersey band, the Castiles, fronted by an unknown Bruce Springsteen to play for teenagers in the afternoon. But the meager income from coffee, food and a cover charge that rose as high as five dollars, wasn’t enough to sustain the place and Roth abandoned the club in 1968 but kept the lease, according to Noam Dworman, who has been running Café Wha? since 1988. Roth moved to Woodstock with his son and daughter, ran a diner, and for some time owned a local club, the Woodstocker, Dworman recalled. The old Café Wha? at 115 MacDougal St. had various incarnations in the 1970s under other names. “I think Richie Havens tried to run a place there for a while,” said Dworman, whose late father, a friend of Roth’s, ran a Mid-Eastern coffee shop, Feenjon, at 117 MacDougal St. In the early 1980s, Roth allowed Dworman senior to move the Feenjon to the old Café Wha? basement next door. In 1988, Noam Dworman convinced his father to let him convert the Feenjon at 115 MacDougal into a rock club and revive the old Café Wha? name. Roth, by that time, was

living in California and was not happy about giving up the name, Dworman said. Lawyers determined that the name had been unused for long enough to allow its legal use by a new owner. “Manny decided to give it up, and he began enjoying the attention he got as the founder of the original Café Wha?” Dworman said. Manuel Lee Roth was born in November 1919 in New Castle, Ind., where his family owned a grocery store. He went to the University of Miami where he majored in theatre and business but left to join the Army Air Corps during World War II. He served as a navigator on bombing runs over Germany and earned a Distinguished Flying Cross. After the war he helped run a USO theater in Germany and returned to finish college and study acting in New York. In the late 1950s he started a club, the Cock and Bull, at 147 Bleecker St. It failed, but it later became The Bitter End under a different owner. In 1959, he leased the former MacDougal St. stable and bought a truckload of broken marble to lay the floor of what became Café Wha?. Survivors include his daughter, Jodi; his son, Brandon; his wife, the former Marlyse Medel; his sister, Jami Roth; and his brother, David.

icture Nick and Nora shaking martinis mixed with Prozac while sitting on the railroad tracks. That, and the program description (“a pitch black and piercingly incisive comedy”) should give you a pretty good indication of what to expect. The one word title — “Chemistry” — is multilayered. Sharply written banter and well-delivered one-liners allow us to access the darkness of the tragedy unfolding before us, as Steph (Lauren LaRocca) and Jamie (Jonathan Hopins) meet in a psychiatrist’s office. Thank God, the “meet cute” stereotype is avoided. Steph, a veteran of hospitalizations and suicide attempts, has become as well-versed in her understanding of pharmaceuticals as any resident on psych rotation. Jamie, who is a novice at negotiating prescriptions, diagnoses and psychiatric assessments, has recently harmed himself while, presumably, enduring a manic episode. TheVillager.com

Between matching wits and comparing scars, Steph (holding card) finds time to get turned on by the sexy medical coverage of Jamie.

A relationship begins, as they match wits and compare scars. It is a casting strength that these characters are not model-perfect. Besides the rare pleasure of seeing people with real bodies, it brings the pain of living with mental illness home, reminding us of how little we know of what our friends and neighbors may be enduring. Steph is adorable, funny, smart, and probably has heard all of her life that she has everything to live for. But, as she says, “I can’t wait for non-existence. I still want to die even when I’m happy.” But, courageously, she has continued, although her hopes for herself, and the relationship, have been modified. A world that doesn’t hurt as much as it used to may be enough. Jamie, on the other hand, finds the distraction of his medication’s side effects an unbearable compromise to who he is. He cannot read, concentrate or function in the Type A way that he

feels defines him. He takes himself off his meds and returns to work; Steph takes to her bed. The gifted and likable young actors display the tangibility of a love that is healing for him, but cannot heal her. Director Anna Strasser has made choices that allow the characters to move in and out of the simple set and occasionally break the fourth wall. Asides to the audience may consist of a cocked eyebrow, or expand to narrations and ruminations. At one point, the characters take turns providing information to the audience. This is Strasser’s one misstep. She and the playwright have allowed the actors to trade fours like jazz musicians, so a sudden foray into an educational segment feels forced and unnecessary — especially since “Chemistry” has already increased our understanding of mental illness in a manner that’s real, poignant and funny — though not played for laughs. hen somebody exits the theater humming a tune from the show they’ve just seen, you know you have a hit — but when a group spills out into the street, laughing boisterously as one of their own recites dialogue with affectionate precision? This is rock-solid confirmation that you’ve achieved that elusive goal every writer and performer aspires to: the creation of a catch phrase. That was the precise scenario I witnessed, following the Fring-

eNYC premiere performance of Bjorn Berkhout’s often funny but ultimately somber musical adaptation of Shakespeare’s “The Tempest.” Here was a satisfied patron of “The Hurricane,” gleefully invoking a memorable line from the opening scene, in which the lead character commands an act of supernatural favor from a mysterious relic: “Monkey paw: Draw forth a storm!” With outstretched arms, a wave of her hands and a voice that demands unconditional obedience, Madam Sparrow — the transgen-

der proprietor of Fire Island’s premiere gay resort — shipwrecks a group of men from her checkered past. Washed up on the shore along with debris from the corporate yacht, they’re under a 24-hour spell that makes them vulnerable to Sparrow’s elaborate scheme. But this Madam (who used to go by the name Adam) isn’t betting on monkey magic alone. Helping her secure revenge are reformed drunk and current handyman Caliban, and globe-trotting Ariel (a materialistic schemer with the requisite heart of gold, played to the hilt of flaming, scene-chewing hilarity by Bryce Henry). Caught in the middle is (step?) daughter Miranda — a virginal adolescent whose serious hetero-sex drive has no outlet on an island full of buff gay boys (“They come to cruise,” she sings. But for her, “It’s all a ruse. No kiss. No date. No fling! I’ve come to notice, here boobs just aren’t a thing!”). Much to Sparrow’s horror, Miranda catches the eye of handsome Ferdinand, a newly minted (straight) castaway and son of mega-rich Alonso — who, since the death of his beloved wife, has gone from Milan Corporation boardroom shark to a wounded seeker whose empty, new age platitudes might sink the company. This provides a golden opportunity for corporate climber Antonio to orchestrate a coup, with help from Alonso’s overlooked (and closeted) little brother. “Bitter and uncomfortable in his own skin” is how Sparrow pigeonholes Sebastian, describing the denial of his sexual orientation as “a terrible disease” that “warps the mind.” Sparrow could have been describing any one of the play’s characters, all of whom struggle to become their true selves. As written by Shakespeare then nicely expanded upon by Berkhout to suit his gay fantasia premise (and his own solid moral agenda), most of the island’s inhabitants are basically decent souls laboring under some sort of false identity, unfulfilled desire or ill-advised quest. That they arrive at final act happiness in a manner having more to do with genuine humanity than monkey paw mojo is enormously

satisfying. Just as satisfying, if somewhat less memorable: the 22 songs, which range from ominously introspective to comically joyful. Although wonderfully arranged by musical director Jeremy Robin Lyons and always well-played by off-stage pianist Wiley Deweese, it’s only here that the production’s low-budget minimalism shortchanges the author’s sweeping ambitions. A few more instruments would have given real heft to the production, which has been wonderfully cast. Every one of them has the requisite comedic or dramatic chops demanded by their roles, and all are in possession of impressive pipes (especially Ryan Rhue’s Antonio). But Madam Sparrow towers over them all, and not just because of her heels. Beautifully played with coiled restraint, wounded dignity and spectacular posture by Mykel Vaughn, the haiku-spouting Sparrow will send you out of the theater with the power to overcome life’s next big obstacle with your new favorite catch phrase: “Monkey paw: Draw forth a storm!” TheVillager.com

n the eve of the release of her debut book (well, e-book), Justine Drake is a bundle of excitement, fragile nerves and near crippling self-doubt. Her book, which provides the play with its title, is “Dragon’s Breath,” the first in a series of four YA Paranormal Romance/Adventure stories (a la “Twilight”). Drake dreams of seeing her work in print one day, and the play follows her march along various meeting with her agent and book readings — gaining haters and fans along the way. The twist? Some of her newfound fans get way too into it, mistakenly finding deep philosophical revelations in the pulpy stories — and eventually forming a cult religion around the series, to Justine’s profound frustration. Writer Michael C. O’Day smartly keeps “Dragon’s Breath” grounded for as long as possible before committing to the insanity of the premise. He provides characters with specificity and depth — especially Justine, who uses her work to help get through difficult times, and

Laura, her biggest fan, who uses the fantasy provided in the books as an escape from her problems. Early scenes between Justine and Laura that find them opening up to each other and bonding are genuinely funny and affecting. It’s becomes a testament to the ways in which the creative process and art can help heal people, and bring them closer together. In addition, “Dragon’s Breath” remains consistently funny and biting throughout, by lampooning and criticizing the publishing industry and fan culture. Unfortunately, the final stretch of the play doesn’t quite stick the landing. As the satire on fan culture calcifies into a religious allegory, the points trying to be made become a bit muddled, and the characters get lost in the shuffle — most disappointingly realized in Laura’s transformation from socially maladroit (but sympathetic young fan) to crazed, wide-eyed cult leader. By going so far over the top, the play never has the chance to get back to its emotional core, or deal seriously with the psychological implications of Laura’s actions. It earns points for audacity, and is full of ideas, for sure — but at the sacrifice of humor and engrossing character work. It’s easy to forgive the ending when the rest is so good, though — especially the cast. Lorinda Lisitza makes Justine a distinctive comic creation, perfectly overemphasizing every line of YA purple prose, while also managing to play her creative neurosis for laughs and pathos, often simultaneously. She’s equally adept at playing the role of the sanest person in the room, without losing any of the nervous energy that makes her relatable and endearing, helping to give the production a solid center when the plot starts twisting in increasingly demented directions. As Laura, Hannah Sloat is appropriately off-kilter and earnest in the early goings, while later on selling the absurd apoplectic fervor her metamorphosis to cult leader calls for. Michael C. O’Day, the playwright himself, digs into the role of Rocco, a snarky, Hawaiian-shirt-wearing Internet critic who plagues Justine, with aplomb.

‘Breath’ may overstretch, but fun nonetheless O’Day plays him as a hyperbolic, vitriolic turbo-nerd in a performance that is both obnoxiously hilarious and unnervingly accurate — the most condescending and bitter recesses of comment threads personified. Ultimately, “Dragon’s Breath”

may overextend itself a little reaching for profundity — but that’s okay, because wit, cast, and commitment to character carry it. It’s ends up being just a fun, cool, enjoyable story — an accomplishment Justine Drake herself would be proud of.

ory Conley’s new play is marvelously audacious and ambitious and wide-ranging and, yes, a little messy. But art is messy: if Picasso or Monet had stayed within the lines would their paintings be as interesting? That idea is very much at the heart of this enormously engaging, mostly comic, but often dead-on satiric and sometimes wistfully serious play. A play is an adventure, says a character named Cory. Like the author whose first name he shares, he’s a playwright. Here, he’s explaining why he writes for the stage rather than for TV. Aren’t experiences (and artworks) that are real and alive and fraught with peril and surprise at any moment more fulfilling than the plastic artifice that passes for experience at a place like, well, the Magic Kingdom? The protagonist of this play is indeed this young man Cory. The story tracks how he struggles to pull out of a writer’s block (Cory hasn’t written a play in three years, and his life has

stalled in almost every other department as well). When his sister Claire leaves him a frantic voice mail containing detailed instructions that feel kind of alarming (“change the locks on my apartment” is one of them), and that ends with her saying she is relocating to a theme park in Florida, Cory becomes concerned. He rushes to the eponymous location intent on “saving” his sister. She, of course, staunchly denies needing his help. He also spends some time with his nine-year-old niece, Emma, who is preternaturally curious about a lot of subjects like racial and ethnic diversity, shell corporations, contemporary geo-politics and economics. Mainly, what happens in “Magic Kingdom” is that Cory has some adventures — and though they’re set against the backdrop of controlled “adventures” like roller coaster rides,

it’s the interaction with real human beings and genuine feelings and emotions that propels the journey. The play is a crucible practically ablaze with ideas. In addition to Emma’s odd curiosities and Cory’s own (possibly over-thought) analyses of art and theater in general and his own art in particular, there’s an utterly brilliant satiric creation in the middle of “Magic Kingdom” who threatens to steal the show every time he takes the stage. His name is Mickey, and as embodied by actor Daniel K. Isaac he becomes a living, breathing embodiment of the new animal created not so long ago by our Supreme Court: he’s a corporation acquiring the human characteristics that he’s been deemed by law to possess. The play is directed sharply by Conley’s frequent collaborator Craig Baldwin, and features a fine cast of eight that includes, in addition to

Isaac and Conley himself as Cory, Rafael Benoit, Cameron Michael Burns, Gina LeMoine, Josh Marcantel, Mary Monahan and Marisa Lark Wallin (an adult actor who is uncanny as a precocious nine-year-old girl). Onstage throughout, too, is technical coordinator Drew Ledbetter, who handles the show’s many projections seamlessly and has some other jobs to do as well. “Magic Kingdom” feels destined for a long life after FringeNYC. It can (and will, I think) be the subject of master’s theses and Ph.D. dissertations — so full of theatrical and sociopolitical-philosophical ideas is this piece, that my mind just exploded with them (and that’s after seeing it just one time and reading it zero times). Hopefully many more opportunities to do both of these things await us. For now, check it out at the Connelly Theatre at FringeNYC. TheVillager.com

Dwellers, an active neighborhood group on the Lower East Side, said before learning of the city’s decision. Locals endured many years of frustration, and both schools reached out to neighborhood activist groups like Dwellers and the East Village Community Coalition, which helped persuade the city D.O.E. to shut down NYC Social. Eventually the league was removed for not having a non-profit angle — the D.O.E. only provides permits for non-profit organizations. A research report sent to the D.O.E. and provided by L.E.S. Dwellers states, “Though it is filed as a for-profit entity, its website says charity donations are made through its sister entity “Play For A Cause,” which is registered as a not-for-profit with the New York Department of State. However, drinking is emphasized as a social component of the adult league, and American Honey Wild Turkey is the official liquor of ZogSports and Bud Light is the official beer of ZogSports, both official sponsors of

ZogSports. We find liquor-sponsored adult leagues on D.O.E. property objectionable.” After the games, there was undoubtedly a large focus on drinking. Besides being officially sponsored by two different alcoholic drinks, Libation, at 137 Ludlow St., is the officially sponsored bar of the sports league, and is only a few blocks from the playing fields. And beyond that, Boyd pointed out, is “Hell Square,” a neighborhood nickname for an area with numerous bars. “They are promoting alcohol on D.O.E. property,” Boyd said of the sports league, pointing out the advertising. She said residents were “concerned about the alcohol-fueled images” being presented to their children as well as the rest of the community. It is inappropriate therefore, she said, for the alcohol-driven leagues to play on D.O.E. property, since their main goal is reportedly the partying after the games. A resident who asked to remain anonymous provided a recent update on the situation. She reported that the lights and generators have been removed at P.S.142, and that ZogSports have not played kickball at either location since last week. Despite positive signs, residents didn’t want to get their hopes up too high.
