e’re excited to move into the spring and summer seasons here at Aviator Sports. With warmer weather, programming expands outdoors. Our backyard patio opens up and weekends are packed with great fun runs and races. When you’re at the outdoor events, be sure to stop by the Aviator Sports table for giveaways. In the spring, Aviator Gymnastics will be expanding programming with new parkour equipment and introducing Ninja Warrior. The Gymnastics and Operations Departments have been working tirelessly at bringing in and installing top of the line equipment. In the summer camp season kicks off with Aviator Sports Summer Day Camp which has been growing every year. Many of the other sports in the facility will be offering camp as well including gymnastics, hockey, figure skating and soccer. The Day Pass Experience At Aviator Sports By Jessica Geren of BKLYNER My family and I recently spent a Saturday afternoon at Aviator Sports and Events Center trying out the Day Pass they offer. We have 4 children ages 11, 8, 6, and 4 — so I am always on the lookout for activities where we can all participate. The kids were so excited to be trying out the center they actually enjoyed the easy commute by car. Pulling up, the sports center is quite impressive; it’s located at Floyd Bennett Field in Brooklyn and there is ample free parking available. For $32.50 the Aviator Day Pass included a full day of Unlimited Public Skating + Skate Rental, 10 Arcade Tokens, Unlimited Rock Climbing, Sky Jump, 1 Session of Open Basketball, and 1 Session of Open Volleyball. Some of these offerings, such as public skating, are also available 365 days a year for those who only wish to skate. With our passes in hand, the kids were anxious to get started. We tried the arcade first, as it seems arcade games are magical and mesmerizing for children. There were arcade games that appealed to the youngest up to the oldest. The children loved having their own card loaded with tokens and being able to choose which games they wanted to play. In no time, the 10 included tokens had been spent and earned tickets were redeemed for some prize candy. The kids were all smiles. Next, we made our way to the ice skating area. My youngest and I decided to watch, but the older ones were more than happy to try out their skating skills. The skate rental is included with

the Day Pass, and it was easy and quick to get a pair of skates. Our children haven’t had much experience on the ice, but there was no judgment during the public skate. The vibe was fun and lighthearted, with music playing in the background and plenty of laughing to be heard. There are benches all around the outside of the rink, perfect for spectators.

After skating, everyone was ready for a little break so we tried out the on-site food court. The pizza smelled delicious and we decided on a few slices of a fresh pie. I know the kids can be harsh pizza critics, but they gave this slice a thumbs up. Diners have their pick of more than just pizza- there were freshly made salads, burgers, French fries, hot soups, and even a self-serve frozen yogurt station among the selection. We found the food court to be a super convenient option in between activities. Finding ourselves refueled, it was time to conquer the rock wall. Considered on of the tallest rock walls in NYC, the wall is 35 feet high. I was surprised that even my youngest children were willing to give this a try. There was no wait, and it wasn’t long before they were taking turns climbing to the top. This was definitely the highlight of our trip, it was by far our favorite part of the day. It was awesome to see each child really excel and use their own skills to tackle the wall.

The climb was challenging, but the energy around this activity was contagious. The climbers aren’t the only ones having fun, the wall attracts quite a few spectators who can’t help but cheer on those brave enough to tackle the wall. Turns out our oldest son was quite the climber, he managed to get the furthest up the wall even

There were even activities included in the pass, that we did not have a chance to try because we chose to repeat other activities. The day pass

AVIATOR TRAVEL HOCKEY CLUB Aviator Hockey Club is NYC’s only Tier 1 hockey program. All of our head coaches are NON-PARENT, full-time, professional staff. A Sit Down with The World Class Aviator Skate Director it. I went to additional training, attended seminars, and learned new skills. Despite being an established coach, I went above and beyond to perfect my craft. Are there any coaches on your team that you would like to highlight? S: The staff is comprised of talented and accomplished coaches, which is something I am proud to be able to say. If I were to pick one coach to highlight, it would be Flora (Magid). She is my right hand and one of the fastest rising coaches on the staff. The rate at which she has developed her knowledge base is impressive and some of her skills she learned even more quickly than I did.

By Cabril DeAbreu It’s not often you find an entire team of dedicated, top of the line figure skating coaches at your disposal, but Aviator Sports and Events Center is happy to be an outlier. We sat down with Slava Rozanski, Aviator’s skate director to find out what makes the group so unique. How long have you been a figure skating coach? S: I’ve been coaching figure skating for the past 25 years. Were there specific levels of competition? S: I’ve coached all levels of skaters, from the 3-year-old first timer to the recreational skater, all the way to top level competition. What do you think are the most important qualities that separate the good, from the top of the line coaches? S: I would say patience is the most critical quality in a coach. Skating improvement takes time and a lot of repetition. Without it, you won’t develop and master skills. Second, you need knowledge of the craft. The coach should be able to break down any skills into individual exercises. In jumps, for example, one should be able to demonstrate the take-off, the rotation, and the landing. Each aspect has a unique approach. Third, is the importance of safety. Younger skaters tend to let excitement get ahead of safety when practicing a new skill. A top-notch skate coach makes sure to stress the importance of being cautious.

What makes the figure skating staff here, so unique? S: The skate team is full of members who, not only have immense figure skating knowledge but also experience competing at the highest levels. They are also dedicated. Typically, skate coaches are self-employed, meaning most of them will coach as a second job. The Aviator staff is comprised of multiple, full-time coaches. Figure skating is their primary focus day in and day out. They are dedicated to maximizing the talent of every student. What else can you tell us about your background? S: I came here 16 years ago, after being a competitive coach in Europe for nine years. I quickly realized the skating environment in the United States was extremely competitive. That fueled my determination to be one of the best, and I invested in

We have a very professional staff, capable of working with the newest skater on fundamentals, to the established or elite skater working to add to their routine. Pickleball is the newest sport to come to Aviator, and wen couldn’t be more excited. With so few programs in the area, as well as limited court locations, Aviator Pickleball is a unique and inexpensive opportunity to learn the game, have some fun, and exercise while improving your skills. Combining court dimensions similar to badminton, paddles similar to table tennis and a light ball similar to wiffleball, Pickleball is a unique experience. Unlike tennis, the ball is served underhand to begin the volley, and a point is scored when a team allows two bounces without a return. Casual games are customarily played to 11 while tournament play ends with a score of 15 or 21.

This camp is designed especially for our youngest campers. At this level, campers will still benefit from a wide variety of activities for the older children, but it’s scaled to be suited for their developmental stage. There are two scheduled downtimes during the day, as well as two snack times and lunch. This group does not go on outside trips. Younger Division

Children in this division are at the translational level and will be introduced to new activities, including ice skating. SPECIAL EVENTS Aviator’s event spaces include indoor & outdoor recreation & entertainment venues. Aviator is ideally suited for a wide variety of community, sporting, and corporate events. Capacity for events in the Summer months is up to 5,000 while in the Spring and Fall it increases to 10,000.

FIELD HOUSE The field house is 10,000 sq. ft. of hardwood surface & 10,000 sq. ft. of turf used for basketball and volleyball leagues, games, and tournaments. The area can be covered and converted into event space for boxing, trade shows, college fairs, family days and charity events. The curtain can be lifted, and the room expanded to a total of 20,000 sq. ft. The room contains an in-house sound

system, wireless microphone, wireless internet, bathrooms and two private meeting rooms. The capacity of the entire 20,000 sq. ft. Field House is 3,000 people.

COMPASS ROSE The expansive grassy area located in front of Aviator Sports & Events Center is known to guests as the “Compass Rose.” We host unique festivals, fairs, and circuses that take place on the Compass Rose throughout the year. The field is 300 ft. wide by approximately 700 ft. long with easy access to the main building, outside bar and outdoor playing fields. One of the largest open spaces in the area, it can be used for sporting events, festivals, group outings, and picnics. You can also book this area for your own group event!

ACES OUTDOOR BAR The outdoor bar is open to the public on the weekends from May through the Fall. It is a full-service bar with TVs, music, picnic tables and food available. Aces Patio is also available to rent for events, gatherings, etc.

To your right, is a gymnastics gym that varies for all ages. I personally go to their adult free running course times which is on weekends 5:40-8:00 $16. There you can do all sorts of free running activities from the tumble mat, to the trampolines and FOAM PIT! They also have rock climbing, food court and arcade. They also have cheap indoor ice skating rink, and a hockey sport skating rink. There is also a gym, but i’m not sure if you need a membership. Staff very helpful, friendly, and most participate with activities depending on which one you choose.
