Many couples find it difficult to create their wedding budgets because they have no previous experience to draw on. The wedding planning advisor CostofWedding.com indicates the average wedding cost in the United States is $26,720, with most people spending between $20,000 and $34,000. Seventh Heaven Event Catering states that, in Canada, the average wedding costs around $30,000. Such costs can vary greatly depending on couples’ preferences, including where they hope to tie the knot. By breaking down wedding expenses, couples can get a clearer picture of how much they may need to pay for their weddings and where they may need to cut costs: Reception site According to The Knot, a wedding 16

planning resource, couples can expect their receptions to eat up the largest chunk of their wedding budgets. Wedding reception venues may cost between $10,000 and $15,000. Not only can invitations set the tone for a wedding — giving guests an idea of whether it is formal or casual while offering clues to the theme — but also they are essential for conveying important information about the festivities. While it was once common to work with a specialized printing and engraving company when ordering wedding invitations, couples tying the knot now have more options. Due in large part to computer and internet access, and myriad user-friendly design applications, it’s easier than ever to design high-quality wedding invitations. According to the wedding industry survey site TheWeddingReport.com, the average price for 150 invitations and response cards is $245. To maximize efficiency and come away with wedding stationery they will love, couples can employ the following tips and techniques: Start with the paper The heavier the stock, the more luxurious the invitations will feel. Quality stock also costs more. Wedding invitations should be printed on substantial stock so they don’t bend or feel flimsy. Industry experts say that 100 percent cotton paper is the most costly paper. Couples can choose from linen stock and textured surfaces as well. Expect to pay more for natural or handmade papers. Those concerned about price can choose the highest-quality stock within budget and then play with other invitation elements to conserve funds. Engraving and letterpress Engraving and letterpress techniques are an art form and create unique wedding invitations. Engraving creates raised lettering while letterpress presses the lettering into the paper. Many people do not have the equipment necessary 24

Women with short hair may lament that they do not have many options when styling their hair for their wedding days. Some may even consider growing out their locks. dancing. Lauren was floored by how cute Josh looked in his tux. “I insisted that he wear a real bow tie and not a clip on,” says Lauren. “But of course he didn’t know how to tie it. As a result we left his tie open and at our first look I tied it for him.” She was so nervous that even she couldn’t get it right the first time. “But it was such a simple gesture that connected us like it was a normal day,” Lauren adds. “And felt so great in the moment.” Josh says he cried (a little) when he saw Lauren: “I thought she looked stunning. Her hair was beautifully braided to the side, and the jewelry accented it all so wonderfully — I had given her the earrings as a gift.” As smoothly as most of the planning and execution went, for Lauren the hardest part was including family on the decision making. Says Lauren, “We both have wonderful, loving, and involved families. This is something that was important

to both of us as we grew our relationship and became a part of each other’s families. However, as you’re planning a wedding, you forget that each member of these families also have visions of this day on their own. Trying to include everyone, while also making our vision a reality, was very complicated and at times trying. Everyone ended up being involved. In the end I think that made the day much more special.” Does the couple have any advice for those who are currently planning to tie the knot? Definitely get a “day-of” or “month-of” coordinator, shares Lauren. “You don’t want to be stressed out about logistics while also trying to enjoy yourself. Ours jumped in with such gusto, coordinating dozens of moving parts. Knowing that she was in control of it all really let us sit back and enjoy! Adds Lauren, “Some things will inevitably go wrong, but focus on the moment and enjoy your day — it’s easier and well worth it. In the end, we were so happy with everything.” Spring | Summer 2018

hen Dylan Jasinsky leased an apartment in Austin, Texas, from Crystal DeLeon, the farthest thing from his mind was that he was meeting his future wife. The two got to chatting when Dylan showed up at the end-of-summer pool party to indulge in some free beer, only to encounter Crystal, who had to explain that there was some good news and bad news — the beer was all gone, but there was champagne. “He’s cute and I can’t finish this champagne on my own,” she remembers thinking. The two dated for five years before Dylan proposed, then married two years later. The proposal was almost as casual and natural as the beginning of their relationship. “The proposal was at the lake on the one day she never expected it, Valentine’s Day,” recalls Dylan. “We decided to talk the dog for a walk and I surprised her with a ring. I don’t think she believed me for a few minutes.” Adds Crystal, “I had no idea. We hadn’t talked about it and we were never in any rush. With our puppy in hand, he got on one knee and proposed.” The two lovebirds decided to have a destination wedding and tied the knot in New York City on Oct. 6, 2017. They chose a venue with a spectacular view of the city — the rooftop of the Park South Hotel — and held the reception in the hotel’s wine cellar. To keep costs low and an intimate feel, the couple only invited 27 guests. The upside is that they got to make a weekend out of

it, starting with their welcome dinner at Sweet Chick on the Lower East Side, where the wedding party noshed on Southern staples such as chicken and waffles, macaroni and cheese, and shrimp and grits. Although everything from the welcome dinner on went perfectly, Crystal says that it was difficult planning the wedding from 2,000 miles away. “We were living in Texas at the time, so I did everything from my computer. I saw nothing before the big day, not even the venue. I had to trust the vendors and go off of reviews online. It was a little nerveracking. We also were moving states and I took a promotion at work a month before the wedding so we had so much on our plate.” On the day of the wedding, all fell into place. Says Dylan, “I felt like everything we had been through together led up to this moment and seeing the glow and joy on her face was the happiest moment of my life.” “I just remember thinking, ‘breath and don’t forget this moment,’ ” adds Crystal. Even though she was in Texas while planning a wedding in New York, she couldn’t have planned a better shindig. The couple opted for a doughnut cake from Dough Doughnuts instead of a traditional wedding cake, and had Eat Good NYC create cake toppers of the couple’s two dogs, who couldn’t be there. To supplement the small order of flowers from a local florist, Crystal and her maid of honor went to the

flower district on the morning of the wedding and picked up tons of flowers at a great price. Jonathan of RSJP films spent all weekend documenting the party’s activities — to the point where he felt more like one of the guests than a videographer. Since Dylan loves New Orleans, Crystal hired the Eli Chalmer Trio to surprise him and the band played “As the Saints Go Marching In” as Dylan walked down the aisle in his black velvet loafers and burgundy tuxedo. Crystal’s dress served double time. “I was so in love with it. I got it at Blush Bridal in Austin and it was actually two pieces. A strapless dress and then I added a topper for the ceremony. The topper matched the lace of the dress so I put it over my actual dress, which gave me sleeves. So during the ceremony I wore the topper and then for the reception I took it off. It looked like I had two dresses. It also had a beautiful train, with more than 100 buttons, and I added a cathedral veil.” The couple and guests agree that one of the most memorable

and enjoyable aspects of the wedding was the officiant, Matt Levy. “He was part of our photography package. He was fun, lighthearted, and truly customized the ceremony for Dylan and I,” recalls Crystal. “We answered a questionnaire he gave us and he was able to take our answers and create such a special ceremony. Our guests could not stop talking about how fun he was.” There is one more thing that Crystal would like to share with anyone planning a wedding in New York. “I want to give a big shout out to the team at Eloping is Fun (photographers) because they were the first ones to reply to my e-mails when I inquired about a wedding in New York City a year before the wedding. It is hard to get wedding vendors to reply back to you if you are doing a small wedding. If Eloping is Fun had not replied back so fast, I’m not sure if it would have turned out as good as it did.” She adds, “But everything turned out absolutely perfect. It was really the perfect fall wedding weekend in NYC.”

eeting the love of your life online isn’t that farfetched in this day and age. In fact, finding your soulmate through a dating site is becoming more and more common these days. That’s exactly how Sam and Sam found each other. Yes, they’re both named Sam. How cute is that? Samantha was a bit hesitant to meet Sam face-to-face — in fact, she debated whether or not to get off the train as the stop approached. “We hit it off immediately, though,” Samantha fondly recalls. When asked about their first date, Sam says, “We first met in person at a coffee shop in Union Square in what turned into a seven-hour first date.” Talk about hitting it off — seven hours is a very long first date. But it was meant to be. The two fell for each other instantly. “He said, ‘Hey, Sam’ in a super cute and nervous way and I knew I liked him immediately. He started his proposal off with the same little ‘Hey, Sam,’ ” she recalls. Sam remembers thinking that Samantha was cute and that they shared the same name. After three years as a couple, Sam decided to pop the question. He says, “We hiked to the top of our favorite mountain in upstate New York. When her back was turned I got down on one knee and got the ring out.” Samantha adds, “I was so excited that I accidentally led us off the trail and got us lost in the woods for a bit.” The two nature lovers got married in Central Park on Oct. 6, 2017, in a small and intimate ceremony. They chose

the wooded area near the 108th Street entrance on the west side because there’s less foot traffic and less noise. Samantha’s best friend officiated. Samantha remembers being extremely nervous on the car ride over to meet up with Sam on their big day. “I was very nervous,” adds Sam. “Mostly about the logistics and everything going smoothly.” The couple found the most difficult things about planning their wedding were the limited budget and managing others’ expectations. “Especially when doing something a little out of the ordinary,” says Samantha about trying to make everyone happy.”It was hard to do that and also do what was best for us.” Fortunately, the two found it really easy to choose their outfits and to say “I do.” “It felt really surreal,” say Samantha about when she saw Sam in his suit. “I was so excited and so happy to see him.” Adds Sam, “I felt like the air was pushed out of my lungs when I saw Sam. She was absolutely gorgeous.” After the ceremony, the wedding party moved on to Jane Restaurant, where the couple had rented out a private dining room. Then it was on to Black Door for cocktails, where the couple had set up bamboo cones full of trail mix on each table and placed dozens of doughnuts on display in place of cake. As the night wore on, they ordered pizza from Suprema Pizza. “This place is legendary and I was thrilled that it was within delivery range of the bar,” mentions Sam. “One of our friends folded three slices together and ate them at the same time,” he adds. The two had limited their spending on the wedding because they wanted to splurge on their honeymoon, but as Sam says, they ended up with the perfect wedding — one that suited their tastes. “I think we had a very unique wedding that spanned the entire borough of Manhattan. We split it into three parts, instead of holding one event at a venue. Started in Central Park for the ceremony, then dinner in SoHo, and the party in Midtown,” says Sam. “We had doughnuts instead of wedding cake and only invited our closest friends and family.
