P

aradise just keeps getting better and better. And choosing the venue for your special occasions gets easier and easier, thanks to the Paradise Catering Hall (51 Avenue U, at the corner of West 11th Street; 718-372-4352). Celebrating your special moments here means having the total attention and expertise of the staff focused exclusively on your affair. But more than this, now is a wondrous time to discover or re-discover this exceptional catering hall. After a stunning re-modeling of their the grand ballroom, management recently spared no expense when they completely re-did the facility’s grand lobby as well as the luxuriously appointed bridal suite, now done up with marble and granite accents for a look of timeless elegance. They match the walls of marble and granite in the ballroom — which itself sports one of the largest chandeliers in all of Brooklyn — giving you just a brief inkling into what they have in store for you and your guests. Come and see the grandeur for yourself. But this is only one reason to choose Paradise. Here, they accept only a single function at any one time. There’s no splitting of the resources between two or three or even more affairs. When you book Paradise, you get the skills and expertise of every person there, on scene and behind the scenes to assure that your event runs flawlessly. This sort of ultimate personalized attention starts the very minute you discover Paradise. At this facility, you don’t deal with some salesman. You deal directly with one of the owners, Hercules, or his son, Mike. And why is this so essential? Quite simply, they have a vested interest in making you happy, not just in making a sale. They know their business depends on word-of-mouth recommendations and on the special days yet to come in your life and the lives of your family. Thus, they will do everything in their power to be certain that the affair you have imagined is transformed into reality under the skilled hands of themselves and their staff. That’s the secret of their longevity

and of their success. The lavish party room, which can be made intimate enough for parties of 100, or grand enough to host a spectacular of up to 400, is marked by a central chandelier that will take your breath away. It is the focal point for a magnificent space done up in sophisticated pinks and reds, with mirrored accents that lend a touch of infinity to the already expansive area. The re-done, picture perfect bridal room is large, romantic and very feminine, accommodating up to 15 in easy comfort, with wall-to-wall mirrors. Ideal photographic locales are assured in this world of environments, which also includes an intimate private garden area, a uniquely designed water fountain, as well as a host of fine, white wrought-iron work. Can even Paradise become better? Of course it can. And they proved that when they totally renovated the large lobby area, adding a regal touch to this space, as well. Whether it be the wedding, engagement party or any other affair, plan it at Paradise and the bottom line will put a very big smile on your face. Our service is top flight, with the uniformed staff a longtime part of the Paradise family. These are full-time professionals who know their business; not weekend teens learning the trade. And when it comes to the food, the chefs are world class. Whatever you can find in the cookbooks, they can serve at the table. They offer an added expertise in all manner of ethnic cooking. Add to that everything is cooked from scratch right on the premises to assure the highest in quality control. Don’t you want to celebrate those once-in-alifetime days in Paradise? The catering office is open Tuesday through Sunday, 1 – 9 p.m. Note that the facilities are also available during the weekdays for all types of social meetings and functions. For the further convenience of your guests, Paradise also can provide free valet parking.

wedding checklist It is exciting to get engaged to the man you love — but the minute you do so, you start a countdown that won’t reach zero until you are on your honeymoon. To properly plan, use our handy wedding checklist below: 12 months before the big day ■■ First, decide on a ceremony and reception site. Make sure right away if it can accommodate all your needs. ■■ Set the date. ■■ Decide on a caterer if catering on-site is unavailable. ■■ Begin shopping for your attire. ■■ Start shopping for attendants’ attires.

the resulting photos will not capture the love you feel if the photographer does not feel it. ■■ Look into wedding-day transportation. Do you want a limo, horse and carriage, limo bus? ■■ Begin drafting your guest list. ■■ Keep it fun — wedding planning is stressful, but not if you’re on the same page and have fun with it.

obligation to invite anyone who might ruin your day. ■■ Compile addresses of guests. Mail savethe-date cards to out-of-town guests. ■■ Search for wedding favors. ■■ Consider honeymoon spots. Call travel agencies for best packages. Keep having fun with the process.

4–6 months out

■■ Decide who will play important roles in your wedding like best man, maid of honor, flower girl, and ring bearer.

6–9 months out

■■ Begin searching for hair and makeup artists.

■■ Discuss the menu with caterer.

■■ Complete the guest list.

■■ If using a wedding consultant, meet and provide her or him with your vision of the wedding day. Remember, that person works for you, not the other way around.

■■ Finalize wedding-day transportation.

■■ Order invitations and other stationery. Think about what “look” and wording you want.

■■ Begin search for wedding bands. ■■ Hire a florist. Again, remember that this person works for you, so make sure you are happy with the florist’s approach. A true pro will help you work out table settings, extra flowers for wedding party members, etc. ■■ Hire a photographer and a videographer. Make sure you like their work, they understand your vision, and that you feel a sense of chemistry with this person, as 6

■■ Book band, musicians, or DJ service. ■■ Purchase wedding bands and engrave a special saying. ■■ Set up your wedding registry. ■■ Purchase accessories, shoes, and undergarments for first fitting. ■■ Ask friends to be key players. Key players are trustworthy pals on whom you can rely for crucial tasks. The key players are not part of the immediate wedding party since they will be busy with photo shoots. ■■ Fine-tune the guest list. Remember, this is your day, not theirs. You are under no

■■ Book wedding-day transportation. ■■ Book hotel for wedding night, if applicable. ■■ Select and order the cake. Be sure to have a topper that represents you and your spouse as a couple. ■■ Continue to compile a list of duties for key players. ■■ Mail hotel and city information to out-oftown guests. ■■ Complete insurance issues, such as coverage for the rings, as needed.

■■ Arrange times for key players to pick up items they are responsible for. ■■ Write a toast for the rehearsal dinner. ■■ Pack for the honeymoon. ■■ Leave honeymoon itinerary with someone in case of emergency.

One day out ■■ Double-check that you have packed your clothes and other personal items for the next day. ■■ De-stress your body. Consider deep breathing and other relaxation exercises such as yoga. ■■ Allocate enough time to have fun with out-of-town guests. ■■ Enjoy your rehearsal dinner. ■■ Make time to spend alone with your husband-to-be. Soak up the moment together. ■■ Have fun. ■■ Remind your fiance to order his tux or suit. ■■ Let the DJ or band know of special songs you would like played at the ceremony and reception. ■■ Purchase wedding favors.

2–4 months out ■■ Get your marriage license application. ■■ Mail out invitations. Hint: make sure to number each invitation, because people often forget to write their name on the response card. This way, you can track it. ■■ Gather all necessary travel documents such as passports and visas. Get immunizations for honeymoon if necessary.

■■ Finalize list of must-have photos. Give a copy to photographer and key players. ■■ Complete seating plan as RSVPs arrive. ■■ Finalize songs for the ceremony and reception. ■■ Get a pre-wedding trim and spa treatment so you feel your best during this stressful time. ■■ Write your vows. Let the officiant know of any readings or other special requests. ■■ Confirm date for rehearsal. ■■ Finalize list of responsibilities for key players and wedding party. ■■ Have a friendly get-together with everyone and distribute responsibilities.

Overall tips No matter what kind of wedding you are having, hundreds of years of human experience offers some tried-and-true tips for making sure your big day is the best day it can be. Here are some: • Trust your wedding party and key players. • Laughter is the best beauty tip. A smile goes a long way. • Remember to implement the stress-buster techniques you and your fiance agreed to use. • Always tell your loved one why you love him.

■■ Finalize menu.

■■ Book time for final fitting.

• Assume that about 20 percent of your guest list will not attend, so invite extras accordingly.

■■ Finalize ceremony and reception music.

■■ Arrange a rehearsal dinner one or two days before the wedding. Invite wedding party and key players.

• Walk around in your wedding shoes before the big day so that they are properly broken in.

■■ Confirm honeymoon plans.

• Plan a special dinner with your hubbie-tobe without any wedding talk. Just relax and enjoy a night together.

■■ Finalize favors or create your own. ■■ Buy thank-you gifts for wedding party and key players. ■■ Book your hair and makeup artists. ■■ Book times for fittings. Bring your accessories. Aim to schedule hair and makeup trial on the same day to get a look at the complete package.

■■ Make checklist of items to bring for the honeymoon. ■■ Finalize receiving line, timeline, and itinerary of the day.

■■ Begin finalizing seating arrangements.

2–3 weeks out

■■ Begin to plan receiving line, timeline, and itinerary of the day.

■■ Finalize seating plan. Call guests who have not returned RSVPs.

■■ Purchase guest book, cake knife, champagne glasses, garters, etc.

■■ Have your final fitting.

4–8 weeks out

■■ If you have a gown, pick it up and hang it in a cool, dry place, away from sunlight.

■■ Tackle applicable legal matters, such as name changes.

■■ Confirm details with all vendors.

■■ Keep having fun with the process. It is nuts! You are getting married!

Planning

Be your own

planner The smart tricks that professionals use

W

edding planning can be an exciting undertaking, but couples who have already walked down the aisle can attest that wedding planning also can be stressful. Ensuring all of the details come out right can prove overwhelming at times. Hiring a wedding planner is one way to alleviate some of the stress associated with wedding planning. Couples who do not have the money to hire a wedding planner can borrow some of the tips and tricks professionals rely on when planning weddings. Make guests the first priority Even though it may seem like weddings should be geared around couples tying the knot, many wedding planners advise couples to focus on accommodating their guests. Having a handle on the number of people who will be attending, any of their specific needs (allergies, mobility issues, etc.), providing a comfortable environment (addressing bugs, weather, seating shortages), and knowing how much space guests will require can make choosing a venue that much easier. Rent what you don’t have Renting rather than purchasing items can save couples money. Wedding planners do not stockpile items such as tables, chairs and decorations. Instead, they rely on rental companies to provide what is necessary. According to Minneapolis-based professionals The Wedding Guys, even couples working with small budgets can enhance or elevate their weddings by working with rental companies. Flush out foliage Wedding planners know that flowers

cost a great deal of money, especially flowers that are not native to the region where couples are getting married. The process of making arrangements can be time-consuming. Also, many flowers no longer produce strong scents because they’re bred for longer stems and a lengthy vase life. Interspersing potted plants with arrangements that are lighter on blooms and heavier on filler can help cost-conscious couples stick to a budget.

Negotiate before signing the contract Wedding planners understand that vendors may be more willing to offer perks or extras rather than adding up a la carte pricing before the contract is signed. This way they secure the reservation on good will. Negotiating for more later on may be difficult.

Trust vendors’ advice Wedding vendors tend to know one another and can be good sources of information. A wedding photographer, for example, may be able to tell couples which reception venues photograph particularly well, and a reception manager may know which DJs or bands are best at

Get organized Organization is key. Brides- and grooms-to-be may want to enlist friends or relatives with a flair for organization to help with details. Borrowing tricks from wedding planners can help couples save money and avoid stress.

Help is just a click away The online tools that can make your wedding planning much easier

E

nsuring an event goes on with minimal hiccups takes patience and thorough planning. This is especially true for weddings, when many elements must merge together for a memorable day. Today’s couples have a bevy of new resources at their disposal to facilitate wedding planning. The internet makes vetting vendors and reading reviews that much easier, but wedding-related apps also can simplify wedding planning. The following are some top picks as culled by Wedding Shoppe, Inc., The Knot and Lifehacker: Wedding Spot: Couples can search for their ideal wedding venue based on location, budget, styles, and capacity. The website enables users to plan their ideal weddings and get cost estimates based on guest list and options. Users also can access discounts and exclusive deals. Wedding LookBook: This app enables couples to browse through thousands of

| Wedding Guide

dresses, accessories, jewelry, and much more. The app will help customers find products in their area. Shutterfly: This photo, invitation, and image-sharing tool can be an inexpensive place to create save-the-date stationery, invitations, and photo memory books. Appy Couple: This app and website helps couples manage their budgets, timelines, wedding parties, and seating charts, while also allowing them to share photos. There is a free version and basic packages that allow access to more features. iWedding Deluxe: In addition to managing timelines, to-do lists and vendors, this app offers inspiration ideas for gowns, manages and tracks gifts, and offers first dance suggestions from iTunes. However, it is only available to iPhone users. AllSeated: This tool can help couples figure out seating arrangements by

creating 3D floor plans of the event, and couples can pull contacts from e-mail and social networks to establish a guest list. If floor plans are unavailable in their database, they can be drawn. The Knot’s Marketplace: With the click of a button, couples can search for wedding vendors in all different categories, read reviews, and directly connect with those businesses. HitchSwitch: Brides or grooms who may be changing their names can do so in one convenient place. Three different packages cater to various name-changing needs. Vistaprint: These stationery specialists offer an array of services, from cards to invitations to personalized envelopes. Once a design is chosen, Vistaprint will offer add-on suggestions for coordinating items, helping to create a cohesive look for the festivities. Wedding websites, apps, and more can streamline wedding planning.

What to expect in wedding costs

N

ewly engaged couples may experience an array of emotions when they sit down to plan their weddings. Some couples cannot wait to jump into planning and want to catalog every aspect of the process, while others may proceed with caution because they don’t know what to expect — particularly in regard to cost. Many couples find it difficult to create their wedding budgets because they have no previous experience to draw on. The wedding planning advisor CostofWedding.com indicates the average wedding cost in the United States is $26,720, with most people spending between $20,000 and $34,000. Seventh Heaven Event Catering states that, in Canada, the average wedding costs around $30,000. Such costs can vary greatly depending on couples’ preferences, including where they hope to tie the knot. By breaking down wedding expenses, couples can get a clearer picture of how much they may need to pay for their weddings and where they may need to cut costs: Reception site According to The Knot, a wedding 16

| Wedding Guide

planning resource, couples can expect their receptions to eat up the largest chunk of their wedding budgets. Wedding reception venues may cost between $10,000 and $15,000. The average price for catering per person is roughly $70. Bar service may be around $2,000 for a three- to four-hour party. Some reception sites combine the room cost with the food and beverage costs, while others have à la carte fees. Cake Wedding cakes tend to be multi-tiered intricate designs, so they will cost more than birthday cakes. According to Statistics Brain, wedding dessert will come in around $390. Music The Knot says wedding bands cost around $3,500, which is more than twice as much as hiring a deejay ($1,200). Soloists or ceremony musicians may cost around $650. Wedding planner Many couples employ wedding planners to make planning their weddings easier. Planners cost an average of

$1,300, says Thumbtack, a company that matches professionals with people who require their services. Transportation Limousines and other transportation prices vary depending on the vehicles couples choose. The Knot notes that budgeting between $400 and $500 for transportation might be wise. Wedding gown Brides-to-be should expect their gowns to cost around $1,100 and the veil or headpiece to be roughly $120, according to the Association of Bridal Consultants. Photography and video Preserving wedding day memories costs around $2,800 for video and photography services, based on data from Statistics Brain. The smaller details, such as accessories, gifts, officiant fees, stationery, spa services, and favors can quickly add up as well. Couples should be sure to leave some wiggle room in their budgets for incidental expenses that may pop up.

Verrazano has all the essentials for the perfect wedding

E

ven the most ornate of weddings begins with the invitations, and while the bride and groom are the recipients of the gifts, they are also the bearers of presents for all those who have helped in so many ways to make the day a perfect one. Whatever your needs in this area, they will surely be fulfilled to all your expectations at Verrazano Gift and Bridal (1205 86th Street, corner of 12th Avenue; 238-2722). Starting with the invitations, the store offers literally hundreds of styles from which too chose, from bold to the most traditional, elegant to sophisticated. If you can’t find it here, it probably hasn’t been designed. In terms of favors, there is no one to compare. Come and be bedazzled by some 200 different favors culled from around the country and the world. With a price range starting at $1.50 and up, there are more than a few items that will satisfy both the taste and budget of anyone. Armani dolls are irresisible, as are the custom-made bridesmaids and bridal dolls. Choose from prestigious names and fine manufacturers. There is a gamut of delights: from picture frames to crystal bowls. There are a host of items imported direct from the top designers of Italy, from napkin holders to jewelry boxes, frames to salt and pepper shakers. And certainly the low prices include personalization and lovely packaging of the favors. From the shower-signing book to the wishing wells and umbrellas (available for rental or purchase), Verrazano has what you crave. The store is open Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday, 10 a.m.–6 p.m.; until 8 p.m. on Thursday and Friday. Other hours accommodated by appointment.

Girls’(or boys’) trip Affordable bachelor and bachelorette party ideas

W

eddings can be expensive. Various sources estimate the average cost of weddings is anywhere from $26,000 to $31,000. Couples and their parents may bear the brunt of wedding expenses, but those who have accepted a role in the wedding party also can expect their share of expenses. Taking into account gifts, wardrobes, makeup, bridal showers, and travel, including getting to and from the bachelor or bachelorette party, bridal party members are on the hook for a lot of money when their friends or family members tie the knot. Many men and women like to travel for their bachelor and bachelorette parties, and cost-conscious bridal party members may be concerned about how expensive such parties can be. Pulling out all the stops can be exciting, but there’s no guarantee these types of parties will be more enjoyable than simpler soirées. Taking steps to control costs can help cost-conscious couples and their friends. The following are some affordable ideas that can be fun for all involved: Bar or winery crawl: Partygoers typically want to enjoy a night out on the town, and traveling from one establishment to another can be a fun way to do just that. Everyone invited can set

themselves apart with a signature item (hat, T-shirt, or colored clothing), and make the rounds. Attend a group event: Group events include sporting events, concerts, theater shows, or a night at a comedy club. Investigate discounted tickets for large groups. Belt out the tunes: Open mic nights at restaurants, bars, and other establishments around town may make for a fun way for friends to share a few laughs together. Participants need not be professional singers to join in on the festivities. Camp out: Get in touch with nature by enjoying a camping trip, complete with a campfire and a few brews. Spending time in the wilderness can restore focus and let stress melt away. Poker or game night: Groups can gather around the poker table to test their skills in poker and other card games. With some free-flowing beverages and snacks galore, games can get pretty animated. Dinner party: Hire a chef to visit your house and prepare a meal for guests. Serve a signature cocktail and let the conversation flow. Bachelor and bachelorette parties can be affordable without sacrificing fun.

Advice

Made in the

Shade Choosing wedding color palettes

S

ome brides may feel beholden to the color white on their wedding days, at least in regard to their gowns. Those who do often embrace the opportunity to showcase their personal styles and set the mood for their nuptials by embracing various colors throughout their ceremonies and receptions. Color can be a critical component when establishing the ambiance for a wedding. Color can evoke certain moods and set the tone for the day. Some colors work better together than others, so while choosing a color scheme may seem like an easy undertaking, some couples may find it requires more careful consideration than they first imagined. According to the bridal guide “A Practical Wedding,” wedding colors can give couples a starting-off point for all of the other details of their weddings. This ensures the wedding ultimately has a cohesive look. Colors need not necessarily match, but borrowing on similar hues can make it easier to plan wedding party wardrobes, flowers, table linens, and much more. Colors can come from anywhere, but many couples try to coordinate their color schemes with the season in which the wedding takes place. In fact, couples who are finding it difficult to decide on a palette can look to seasonal colors for inspiration. For example, pastels and blooming flowers can set the scene for spring weddings, while jewel tones and rich reds and greens may be fitting for winter ceremonies. Some couples opt for more loosely defined color palettes, such as neutral and natural colors. Country and garden weddings can borrow ideas from the landscape, with natural linens paired with wildflowers. Using whites, grays, and beiges enables couples to add a pop of color without overwhelming the setting.

20

| Wedding Guide

Brides magazine suggests that couples avoid choosing too many colors. A maximum of three with one metallic can ensure that things look cohesive without being over-the-top. Also, brides and grooms needn’t feel pressured by the “hot” colors of the moment. As with clothing and hairstyles, trends change. It is better to select colors that will stand the test of time and look good for years to come. Couples may have to incorporate colors already at their wedding venues into their style. Fortunately, many reception sites are outfitted in neutral tones to en-

able customization. The wedding resource The Knot also says having a basic knowledge of the color wheel can help. Typically, colors that pair well together are those that are opposites on the color wheel. Also, colors that share proximity on the color wheel will have similar tones and play well together. Examples of opposite colors include purples and yellows, reds and greens, and oranges and blues. Couples should not be afraid to take some chances with their color palettes, especially if they want to make a bold and modern statement.

invitations Taking a hands-on approach to set the tone for the wedding

I

nvitations are a key component of wedding planning. Not only can invitations set the tone for a wedding — giving guests an idea of whether it is formal or casual while offering clues to the theme — but also they are essential for conveying important information about the festivities. While it was once common to work with a specialized printing and engraving company when ordering wedding invitations, couples tying the knot now have more options. Due in large part to computer and internet access, and myriad user-friendly design applications, it’s easier than ever to design high-quality wedding invitations. According to the wedding industry survey site TheWeddingReport.com, the average price for 150 invitations and response cards is $245. To maximize efficiency and come away with wedding stationery they will love, couples can employ the following tips and techniques: Start with the paper The heavier the stock, the more luxurious the invitations will feel. Quality stock also costs more. Wedding invitations should be printed on substantial stock so they don’t bend or feel flimsy. Industry experts say that 100 percent cotton paper is the most costly paper. Couples can choose from linen stock and textured surfaces as well. Expect to pay more for natural or handmade papers. Those concerned about price can choose the highest-quality stock within budget and then play with other invitation elements to conserve funds. Engraving and letterpress Engraving and letterpress techniques are an art form and create unique wedding invitations. Engraving creates raised lettering while letterpress presses the lettering into the paper. Many people do not have the equipment necessary 24

| Wedding Guide

to produce these designs at home, and if they want a truly high-end invitation, they’ll need to use a professional printing service. Thermography is an alternative that can deliver raised print using heat and special inks. Printing companies Options abound in regard to in-store and online printing companies. Many companies offer self-service design templates that enable customers to tweak text and placement of some graphic elements and then have the invitations printed and shipped to their homes. Companies may provide stock samples and examples of lettering so that couples can touch and see the invitations prior to placing an order. At-home printing One of the more accessible invitation production methods is at-home printing. However, there are some limitations

when printing at home. For example, couples who do not have a high-end printer may find that the text on their invitations is not as crisp and the ink may smudge. Also, paper options may be limited to what the tray feeder can accommodate. Stock that is 80 pounds or 12-point stock is preferable, but anything more may jam around the print head. It may take some trial and error (and wasted paper) to perfect alignment and achieve the desired look. DIYers also need to know about “bleed” designs. According to the advice site A Practical Wedding, bleed is a printing term for design elements or images extending beyond the trim edge so that unwanted white space is eliminated. Again, it may take some practice to get the desired look. Couples have many different options when designing their wedding invitations, and some may even be able to design and produce their own.

Change

Unconventional ideas for a wedding menu

T

raditionally, one of the more memorable aspects of wedding receptions is the food. Whether it was fun, tasty, or something entirely new for guests, food tends to leave a lasting impression. The experts at Boho Weddings say that, more than ever before, couples are seeking menu ideas that reflect their personalities as a couple as they seek to make a statement at their events. Celebrating with delicious, unique foods can make receptions that much more amazing. Bite-sized bursts Tapas and a movement toward small bites has started to take hold at wedding receptions. Such a choice allows guests to try many different flavors without filling up too quickly. From sliders to mini grilled cheese to soup shots to bite-sized pizzas, many of these small bites feature flavors borrowed from familiar comfort foods — just presented on a miniature scale. Comfort stations and bars Couples who love comfort food can put it on display with a crostini station, a mashed potato bar, a chicken and waffles station, a gourmet popcorn snack station, or a ramen noodle bar. Food trucks and carts Outdoor weddings can be enhanced with the addition of trendy food trucks. These restaurants on wheels can inject burgers, sandwiches, international delights, crêpes, noodles, and so many more flavors into a wedding. High-end options Couples may want to give guests a taste of the lavish with olive oil and vinegar tasting stations, whiskey bars, French hors d’oeuvres, Kobe beef sliders, lobster tails, risotto stations, and more. Childhood favorites When it comes time for dessert, some couples opt to avoid or downplay wed26

| Wedding Guide

ding cakes in favor of something simpler. A cookie-and-milk bar, doughnut holes, soft pretzel stations, pie pops, or dessert shot jars push creativity and sweetness to new levels. Do-it-yourself dessert stations, such as s’more-making and ice cream sundae stations, also can be big hits.

Couples are increasingly feeling less beholden to traditional wedding reception menus as they look to infuse their personal tastes into the foods they plan to serve their guests. Many catering managers and chefs welcome the chance to work with couples looking to create unique reception menus.

Serious wedding style for short-haired brides

O

n a day when all eyes and cameras will be trained on them, it’s natural for brides and grooms tying the knot to want to look their best. As a result, many couples invest a portion of their budgets into spa and beauty treatments, with many even hiring salon stylists to ensure their wedding-day looks are flawless. Women with short hair may lament that they do not have many options when styling their hair for their wedding days. Some may even consider growing out their locks. However, plenty of creative styles exist for ladies without long locks:

Experiment with color: One way to “tress to impress” is to experiment with some color. Well-placed highlights, balayage treatments, ombre, or peek-aboo underlights can add an extra spark to a bride’s normal hairstyle. Speak with a qualified stylist about what you plan to achieve with a wedding-day look, so color can be applied correctly. Retro glamour: Brides may want to harken back to an era when glamour reigned supreme. Replicate one of the short styles

of the 1940s or ’50s, paying homage to Audrey Hepburn, Marilyn Monroe, Lauren Bacall, or Judy Garland. Braids and plaits: Braids can add whimsy to shoulder-length or shorter hair. In addition, braids can anchor short locks when an up-do is desired. Braids can be placed into the front or rear crown of the head to look like a hair halo or crown. Use embellishments: If short hair cannot be gathered into a braid or bun, you can opt for adorned pins, barrettes, or headbands to add a touch of sparkle to the look. Ask a stylist to tease the crown of your hair to achieve a little more height and impact. Half-up style: Many women with short hair find that using bobby pins to pin up select areas of their hair can help achieve a partial up-do look without the need for longer locks. Experienced stylists will know how to manipulate hair effectively to create this look. Small tendrils of hair can be left free and curled for a less structured, more natural effect. Brides-to-be with short hair do not need to fret nor make drastic changes to their hairstyles to look beautiful on their wedding days. Short hair can be manipulated into many camera-ready creations.

Air out

Is airbrushed makeup the way to go?

H

air and makeup is an important part of wedding day planning. Brides and grooms want to look their best on their wedding days, when they will no doubt take dozens of photos, if not more. Men may apply some oilabsorbing powder to tone down shine on their skin, but women tend to pull out all the stops when selecting bridal makeup — often hiring professional makeup artists to create a signature look. Airbrush-applied makeup is an option women may want to explore. The wedding resource The Knot says that makeup airbrushing is quite popular in the world of movies and modeling and is now becoming more popular among brides-to-be. When applied correctly by a professional, airbrush makeup can have a number of perks.

Understanding airbrush makeup can help brides determine if it’s the best choice for them. Airbrush makeup is comprised of a very thin liquid makeup that is applied with the use of an air gun. This produces a thin, even layer of foundation, often creating a matte finish. Makeup artists can custom-blend shades to get the right match for their customers’ skin tones. And because the fine mist of airbrush makeup enables true skin tone to show through, it can appear much more natural. Many airbrushed formulations are silicone-based, enabling long-lasting wear and water-resistant properties. This is advantageous when hugging and kiss-

ing on one’s wedding day. Some airbrush makeup can last up to 16 hours. Some airbrush formulations are water- or alcoholbased. Alcohol-based options can be used to cover tattoos or birthmarks. Touch-ups are minimal with airbrush makeup, and the formulations can be layered to cover blemishes. Airbrush makeup also creates a pristine finish for applying other makeup. Airbrush makeup is compatible with well-moisturized skin and takes to it well, but dry skin may flake, crack, and look flat, advises Essence Designs. Brides who end up shedding tears of joy on their wedding days might find that airbrush makeup can streak, which can be difficult to cover up. Because it requires a certain skill set and equipment, airbrush makeup tends to be more expensive than traditional makeup when done by a professional. Airbrush makeup can create a flawless look and may be an option for brides to consider.

As a result we left his tie open and at our first look I tied it for him.” She was so nervous that even she couldn’t get it right the first time. “But it was such a simple gesture that connected us like it was a normal day,” Lauren adds. “And felt so great in the moment.” Josh says he cried (a little) when he saw Lauren: “I thought she looked stunning. Her hair was beautifully braided to the side, and the jewelry accented it all so wonderfully — I had given her the earrings as a gift.” As smoothly as most of the planning and execution went, for Lauren the hardest part was including family on the decision making. Says Lauren, “We both have wonderful, loving, and involved families. This is something that was important

to both of us as we grew our relationship and became a part of each other’s families. However, as you’re planning a wedding, you forget that each member of these families also have visions of this day on their own. Trying to include everyone, while also making our vision a reality, was very complicated and at times trying. Everyone ended up being involved. In the end I think that made the day much more special.” Does the couple have any advice for those who are currently planning to tie the knot? Definitely get a “day-of” or “month-of” coordinator, shares Lauren. “You don’t want to be stressed out about logistics while also trying to enjoy yourself. Ours jumped in with such gusto, coordinating dozens of moving parts. Knowing that she was in control of it all really let us sit back and enjoy! Adds Lauren, “Some things will inevitably go wrong, but focus on the moment and enjoy your day — it’s easier and well worth it. In the end, we were so happy with everything.” Spring | Summer 2018

hen Dylan Jasinsky leased an apartment in Austin, Texas, from Crystal DeLeon, the farthest thing from his mind was that he was meeting his future wife. The two got to chatting when Dylan showed up at the end-of-summer pool party to indulge in some free beer, only to encounter Crystal, who had to explain that there was some good news and bad news — the beer was all gone, but there was champagne. “He’s cute and I can’t finish this champagne on my own,” she remembers thinking. The two dated for five years before Dylan proposed, then married two years later. The proposal was almost as casual and natural as the beginning of their relationship. “The proposal was at the lake on the one day she never expected it, Valentine’s Day,” recalls Dylan. “We decided to talk the dog for a walk and I surprised her with a ring. I don’t think she believed me for a few minutes.” Adds Crystal, “I had no idea. We hadn’t talked about it and we were never in any rush. With our puppy in hand, he got on one knee and proposed.” The two lovebirds decided to have a destination wedding and tied the knot in New York City on Oct. 6, 2017. They chose a venue with a spectacular view of the city — the rooftop of the Park South Hotel — and held the reception in the hotel’s wine cellar. To keep costs low and an intimate feel, the couple only invited 27 guests. The upside is that they got to make a weekend out of

it, starting with their welcome dinner at Sweet Chick on the Lower East Side, where the wedding party noshed on Southern staples such as chicken and waffles, macaroni and cheese, and shrimp and grits. Although everything from the welcome dinner on went perfectly, Crystal says that it was difficult planning the wedding from 2,000 miles away. “We were living in Texas at the time, so I did everything from my computer. I saw nothing before the big day, not even the venue. I had to trust the vendors and go off of reviews online. It was a little nerveracking. We also were moving states and I took a promotion at work a month before the wedding so we had so much on our plate.” On the day of the wedding, all fell into place. Says Dylan, “I felt like everything we had been through together led up to this moment and seeing the glow and joy on her face was the happiest moment of my life.” “I just remember thinking, ‘breath and don’t forget this moment,’ ” adds Crystal. Even though she was in Texas while planning a wedding in New York, she couldn’t have planned a better shindig. The couple opted for a doughnut cake from Dough Doughnuts instead of a traditional wedding cake, and had Eat Good NYC create cake toppers of the couple’s two dogs, who couldn’t be there. To supplement the small order of flowers from a local florist, Crystal and her maid of honor went to the

flower district on the morning of the wedding and picked up tons of flowers at a great price. Jonathan of RSJP films spent all weekend documenting the party’s activities — to the point where he felt more like one of the guests than a videographer. Since Dylan loves New Orleans, Crystal hired the Eli Chalmer Trio to surprise him and the band played “As the Saints Go Marching In” as Dylan walked down the aisle in his black velvet loafers and burgundy tuxedo. Crystal’s dress served double time. “I was so in love with it. I got it at Blush Bridal in Austin and it was actually two pieces. A strapless dress and then I added a topper for the ceremony. The topper matched the lace of the dress so I put it over my actual dress, which gave me sleeves. So during the ceremony I wore the topper and then for the reception I took it off. It looked like I had two dresses. It also had a beautiful train, with more than 100 buttons, and I added a cathedral veil.” The couple and guests agree that one of the most memorable

and enjoyable aspects of the wedding was the officiant, Matt Levy. “He was part of our photography package. He was fun, lighthearted, and truly customized the ceremony for Dylan and I,” recalls Crystal. “We answered a questionnaire he gave us and he was able to take our answers and create such a special ceremony. Our guests could not stop talking about how fun he was.” There is one more thing that Crystal would like to share with anyone planning a wedding in New York. “I want to give a big shout out to the team at Eloping is Fun (photographers) because they were the first ones to reply to my e-mails when I inquired about a wedding in New York City a year before the wedding. It is hard to get wedding vendors to reply back to you if you are doing a small wedding. If Eloping is Fun had not replied back so fast, I’m not sure if it would have turned out as good as it did.” She adds, “But everything turned out absolutely perfect. It was really the perfect fall wedding weekend in NYC.”

eeting the love of your life online isn’t that farfetched in this day and age. In fact, finding your soulmate through a dating site is becoming more and more common these days. That’s exactly how Sam and Sam found each other. Yes, they’re both named Sam. How cute is that? Samantha was a bit hesitant to meet Sam face-to-face — in fact, she debated whether or not to get off the train as the stop approached. “We hit it off immediately, though,” Samantha fondly recalls. When asked about their first date, Sam says, “We first met in person at a coffee shop in Union Square in what turned into a seven-hour first date.” Talk about hitting it off — seven hours is a very long first date. But it was meant to be. The two fell for each other instantly. “He said, ‘Hey, Sam’ in a super cute and nervous way and I knew I liked him immediately. He started his proposal off with the same little ‘Hey, Sam,’ ” she recalls. Sam remembers thinking that Samantha was cute and that they shared the same name. After three years as a couple, Sam decided to pop the question. He says, “We hiked to the top of our favorite mountain in upstate New York. When her back was turned I got down on one knee and got the ring out.” Samantha adds, “I was so excited that I accidentally led us off the trail and got us lost in the woods for a bit.” The two nature lovers got married in Central Park on Oct. 6, 2017, in a small and intimate ceremony. They chose

the wooded area near the 108th Street entrance on the west side because there’s less foot traffic and less noise. Samantha’s best friend officiated. Samantha remembers being extremely nervous on the car ride over to meet up with Sam on their big day. “I was very nervous,” adds Sam. “Mostly about the logistics and everything going smoothly.” The couple found the most difficult things about planning their wedding were the limited budget and managing others’ expectations. “Especially when doing something a little out of the ordinary,” says Samantha about trying to make everyone happy.”It was hard to do that and also do what was best for us.” Fortunately, the two found it really easy to choose their outfits and to say “I do.” “It felt really surreal,” say Samantha about when she saw Sam in his suit. “I was so excited and so happy to see him.” Adds Sam, “I felt like the air was pushed out of my lungs when I saw Sam. She was absolutely gorgeous.” After the ceremony, the wedding party moved on to Jane Restaurant, where the couple had rented out a private dining room. Then it was on to Black Door for cocktails, where the couple had set up bamboo cones full of trail mix on each table and placed dozens of doughnuts on display in place of cake. As the night wore on, they ordered pizza from Suprema Pizza. “This place is legendary and I was thrilled that it was within delivery range of the bar,” mentions Sam. “One of our friends folded three slices together and ate them at the same time,” he adds. The two had limited their spending on the wedding because they wanted to splurge on their honeymoon, but as Sam says, they ended up with the perfect wedding — one that suited their tastes. “I think we had a very unique wedding that spanned the entire borough of Manhattan. We split it into three parts, instead of holding one event at a venue. Started in Central Park for the ceremony, then dinner in SoHo, and the party in Midtown,” says Sam. “We had doughnuts instead of wedding cake and only invited our closest friends and family. Two days later we were on a plane to Vietnam and Japan for a life-changing honeymoon.”

a parting gift

horoscopes CAPRICORN Dec. 22–Jan. 19

Capricorn takes commitment seriously. If she’s going to utter sacred vows and then seal them with “till death do us part,” she’s going to mean it. Cue Capricorn Kate Moss waiting until she was 37 to tie the knot. Your wedding needs to be understated with a VIP twist — Moss’s fashionable affair ended up in the pages of Vogue, after all — and family is big, too. Moss and daughter Lila Grace had a private wedding photo shoot while extended family, like longtime friends John Galliano, designed her dress and Mario Testino, who has shooting the model since she was 16, photographed the event.

AQUARIUS Jan. 20–Feb. 18

No shoes for you: you’re getting married barefoot on the beach or in one of your BFF’s fabulous backyards. As the sign of group activity and friendship, your big day will be fun and filled with creative touches that will ensure that your eccentric guest list — from your college buddy you met at Gwar show to your aura-reading bank teller — have a great time. Take Aquarius Jennifer Aniston, who shook up her vows by promising to always make ex-husband Brad Pitt banana milk shakes. Most likely you’re marrying your best friend, so the vibe will be as playful as your union.

PISCES Feb. 19–March 20

You are a dreamer and the sign of fantasy, so your wedding will be “your” idea of a fairy tale. You have your own sense style and alternative tastes, so you will likely want creative control over aesthetic aspects like playlist (Cut Copy, Wilco, Tom Waits), food (Ethiopian), and decor (a cool mix of vintage and modern). Your ruling planet is Neptune, so the sea is in your soul. Think about embracing your inner-mermaid with a fish-tail braid, a netted veil, or details dripping in pearls.

ARIES March 21–April 19

Lady Gaga and Mariah Carey: you share a sign with some fiery females, so your wedding should be as big as your personality. It’s got to have some sizzle. 58

| Wedding Guide

Yet not every ram is into large, fabulous affairs. Some may feed their flames by having a quickie City Hall wedding and then blowing the bulk of her wedding wad on an elaborate trip for two to Tahiti, Tasmania, or Tulum Beach … or all three.

TAURUS April 20–May 30

Let us plant a seed, earth sign: try an outdoor wedding. Not backyard barbecue, but one filled with twinkling white lights twisted elegantly into the branches of an old oak tree; large, canopied tents lit by chandeliers; wild flowers; and locally sourced gourmet food. By nature, you tend to be laid back, but a lack of luxury on a bull’s big day may have her seeing red. So be prepared to get a little dirt under your nails while planning, to get what you want — or on your feet at your reception when you kick off your heels and dance!

GEMINI May 21–June 20

Your altar? The mouth of a volcano or in a cage submerged in a shark tank. If you’re going to make this big of a commitment, you’re going to need a shot of adrenaline. Yet, as unorthodox as your ceremony may be, dear twin, expect your duel personality to show face at your reception where sweet, sincere moments will be laced with light puffs of pure fun like your grandma hopping into the DJ booth or a spontaneous food fight.

CANCER June 21–July 22

Admit it: Hallmark ads make you cry and you were wrecked for weeks after watching “The Notebook.” As a crab, you tend to be sentimental, and your wedding will be filled with teary-eyed toasts and details that honor your nearest and dearest. Tradition and family is very important to you, so along with your mother’s engagement ring, that you most likely already have, try wearing her wedding dress as well.

LEO July 23–Aug. 22

Lights, camera, bride! Your wedding will be the biggest event your Facebook newsfeed has ever seen! Leos love the spotlight, so everything

about your wedding will have a “too much” quality: too much food, too much entertainment, too much glamour! But, be forewarned, lovely lion, don’t cross over into “My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding” territory with a dress covered in sparkling, pink LED butterflies. Whittle down the wow-factor just a bit and you’re sure to earn a #chicwedding hash tag when photos of your big day go viral.

VIRGO Aug. 23–Sept. 22

You’re a pragmatic, earthbound lady. You can handle a spreadsheet like a knight with a lance, so you may want to plan your entire wedding all by yourself. But be realistic. You’re a no-fuss gal, but your wedding is the one day it’s completely appropriate to be a princess. So, get your Kate Middleton on and hire some professional help. Let go of some control and it will be as rewarding as the first time you kissed your prince.

LIBRA Sept. 23–Oct. 22

Libra is the sign of beauty and love. Most likely you’ve had a quite a few suitors and the one you’re choosing to marry is pretty special. Honor this by allowing your well-balanced nature to come out by letting your man have some say in the wedding’s design. Even if he makes questionable choices, like wanting to include a Superman reference in the ceremony or a beer pong table during the reception, your innate sense of style and charm will refine these decisions and the ultimate compromise will be elegant.

SCORPIO Oct. 23–Nov. 21

You know exactly what you want. Vera Wang gown, Harry Winston ring, private Etta James performance. You’ve been dreaming about this day since you were a kid and the private, intimate affair is the perfect opportunity to show off your exquisite taste. Show off your creative side in the details: opt for a dress in a color other than white or arrive on horseback. Whatever you choose, your wedding will be breathtaking, memorable, romantic, and picture-worthy.

SAGITTARIUS Nov. 22–Dec. 21

Your wedding? Think: Costa Rica, on the beach, after a day of surfing. Guests? Your family, closest friends … and maybe a few monkeys. As an archer, you’re athletic, adventurous, independent, and a lover of travel. You definitely have the cool-chick vibe down pat — so even if you have a reception in a humdrum banquet hall, you’ll spice up the place with a few aerialists dropping from the ceiling with a plate of hors d’oeuvres.
