P

aradise just keeps getting better and better. And choosing the venue for your special occasions gets easier and easier, thanks to the Paradise Catering Hall (51 Avenue U, at the corner of West 11th Street; 718-372-4352). Celebrating your special moments here means having the total attention and expertise of the staff focused exclusively on your affair. But more than this, now is a wondrous time to discover or re-discover this exceptional catering hall. After a stunning re-modeling of their the grand ballroom, management recently spared no expense when they completely re-did the facility’s grand lobby as well as the luxuriously appointed bridal suite, now done up with marble and granite accents for a look of timeless elegance. They match the walls of marble and granite in the ballroom — which itself sports one of the largest chandeliers in all of Brooklyn — giving you just a brief inkling into what they have in store for you and your guests. Come and see the grandeur for yourself. But this is only one reason to choose Paradise. Here, they accept only a single function at any one time. There’s no splitting of the resources between two or three or even more affairs. When you book Paradise, you get the skills and expertise of every person there, on scene and behind the scenes to assure that your event runs flawlessly. This sort of ultimate personalized attention starts the very minute you discover Paradise. At this facility, you don’t deal with some salesman. You deal directly with one of the owners, Hercules, or his son, Mike. And why is this so essential? Quite simply, they have a vested interest in making you happy, not just in making a sale. They know their business depends on word-of-mouth recommendations and on the special days yet to come in your life and the lives of your family. Thus, they will do everything in their power to be certain that the affair you have imagined is transformed into reality under the skilled hands of themselves and their staff. That’s the secret of their longevity

and of their success. The lavish party room, which can be made intimate enough for parties of 100, or grand enough to host a spectacular of up to 400, is marked by a central chandelier that will take your breath away. It is the focal point for a magnificent space done up in sophisticated pinks and reds, with mirrored accents that lend a touch of infinity to the already expansive area. The re-done, picture perfect bridal room is large, romantic and very feminine, accommodating up to 15 in easy comfort, with wall-to-wall mirrors. Ideal photographic locales are assured in this world of environments, which also includes an intimate private garden area, a uniquely designed water fountain, as well as a host of fine, white wrought-iron work. Can even Paradise become better? Of course it can. And they proved that when they totally renovated the large lobby area, adding a regal touch to this space, as well. Whether it be the wedding, engagement party or any other affair, plan it at Paradise and the bottom line will put a very big smile on your face. Our service is top flight, with the uniformed staff a longtime part of the Paradise family. These are full-time professionals who know their business; not weekend teens learning the trade. And when it comes to the food, the chefs are world class. Whatever you can find in the cookbooks, they can serve at the table. They offer an added expertise in all manner of ethnic cooking. Add to that everything is cooked from scratch right on the premises to assure the highest in quality control. Don’t you want to celebrate those once-in-alifetime days in Paradise? The catering office is open Tuesday through Sunday, 1 – 9 p.m. Note that the facilities are also available during the weekdays for all types of social meetings and functions. For the further convenience of your guests, Paradise also can provide free valet parking.

wedding checklist It is exciting to get engaged to the man you love — but the minute you do so, you start a countdown that won’t reach zero until you are on your honeymoon. To properly plan, use our handy wedding checklist below: 12 months before the big day ■■ First, decide on a ceremony and reception site. Make sure right away if it can accommodate all your needs. ■■ Set the date. ■■ Decide on a caterer if catering on-site is unavailable. ■■ Begin shopping for your attire. ■■ Start shopping for attendants’ attires.

the resulting photos will not capture the love you feel if the photographer does not feel it. ■■ Look into wedding-day transportation. Do you want a limo, horse and carriage, limo bus? ■■ Begin drafting your guest list. ■■ Keep it fun — wedding planning is stressful, but not if you’re on the same page and have fun with it.

obligation to invite anyone who might ruin your day. ■■ Compile addresses of guests. Mail savethe-date cards to out-of-town guests. ■■ Search for wedding favors. ■■ Consider honeymoon spots. Call travel agencies for best packages. Keep having fun with the process.

4–6 months out

■■ Decide who will play important roles in your wedding like best man, maid of honor, flower girl, and ring bearer.

6–9 months out

■■ Begin searching for hair and makeup artists.

■■ Discuss the menu with caterer.

■■ Complete the guest list.

■■ If using a wedding consultant, meet and provide her or him with your vision of the wedding day. Remember, that person works for you, not the other way around.

■■ Finalize wedding-day transportation.

■■ Order invitations and other stationery. Think about what “look” and wording you want.

■■ Begin search for wedding bands. ■■ Hire a florist. Again, remember that this person works for you, so make sure you are happy with the florist’s approach. A true pro will help you work out table settings, extra flowers for wedding party members, etc. ■■ Hire a photographer and a videographer. Make sure you like their work, they understand your vision, and that you feel a sense of chemistry with this person, as 8

■■ Book band, musicians, or DJ service. ■■ Purchase wedding bands and engrave a special saying. ■■ Set up your wedding registry. ■■ Purchase accessories, shoes, and undergarments for first fitting. ■■ Ask friends to be key players. Key players are trustworthy pals on whom you can rely for crucial tasks. The key players are not part of the immediate wedding party since they will be busy with photo shoots. ■■ Fine-tune the guest list. Remember, this is your day, not theirs. You are under no

■■ Book wedding-day transportation. ■■ Book hotel for wedding night, if applicable. ■■ Select and order the cake. Be sure to have a topper that represents you and your spouse as a couple. ■■ Continue to compile a list of duties for key players. ■■ Mail hotel and city information to out-oftown guests. ■■ Complete insurance issues, such as coverage for the rings, as needed.

Planning

Staying on schedule How to create your wedding day timeline

W

edding days can be hectic. In fact, many couples note after tying the knot that their wedding days were so busy that the ceremonies and receptions were over before they knew it. Creating a wedding day schedule can seem like a daunting task. Couples tend to have lots of things to do before saying “I do,” and organizing everything so ceremonies begin on time can seem as puzzling as a brain teaser. But certain scheduling strategies can help couples ensure they look their best and make it to the altar on time:

Start with the ceremony Couples can establish a framework for their wedding day schedule by working back from the ceremony. Once the ceremony time is set, couples who plan to take photos before their ceremonies can then work with their photographers to determine how much time they will need for photos and where they want to take the photos. Bridal parties may need transportation to the photo session, so determining when and where to take photos before the ceremony gives couples an idea of when to arrange for pickup. Confirm when the venue is open to the wedding party Before booking hair and makeup appointments, couples should confirm when they will be able to access their wedding venue. Brides may want to get their hair and makeup done at the ceremony sight, but that may only be possible if the venue opens early for the wedding party. If it does not, then brides must account for transportation time to the ceremony sight when making their wedding day schedules. Determine how much time is needed for hair and makeup Weddings that feature large bridal parties will require more time for hair and makeup than ceremonies with small parties. Grooms and groomsmen often 12

| Wedding Guide

take care of their own hair, though some grooms might want to schedule hot shaves for themselves and their groomsmen. Grooms should ask groomsmen if they want a hot shave and then work with their barbers to determine how much time it will take to tend to all participants. Brides with large bridal parties may need to book more than two hair and makeup artists so everyone can get done on time. Wedding hair and makeup sessions can last several hours for large bridal parties, so brides should schedule their sessions early if their parties are big. Make lunch arrangements Some couples choose to tie the knot and host their receptions at the same venue. In such instances, if brides are getting their hair and makeup done at the venue, ask the venue representative if lunch can be provided to the bridal party. Some venues may include small lunch buffets in their reception costs, while others might charge extra.

Confirm the availability and costs, and if it’s unavailable or too expensive, then arrange for lunch to be delivered. Either way, couples should not skip lunch, as it may be their only chance to eat until after the ceremony. Distribute your schedule to one another and the bridal party Once the wedding day schedule has been devised, couples should share it with each other and their wedding parties. Grooms’ wedding day to-do lists might not be as extensive as brides’, but grooms should still be kept in the loop regarding the schedule so they can help if anyone has questions or if something goes awry. Sharing the schedule with the wedding party decreases the chances of someone being late or missing an appointment. Couples can solve the riddle of scheduling their wedding days by working backwards and asking their vendors to cooperate in laying out the day’s events.

Keeping it

easy

Seven smart choices for a smoother big day

W

edding planning is no small task. From sending out engagement announcements to gifting guests with take-home favors, a couple will pour over scores of details as they plan their weddings. As if selecting a photographer or choosing the right passed appetizers isn’t challenging enough, some unknown variables are sure to pop up on the big day as well. Couples can take their cues from others who have walked the aisle before them with these tricks of the trade, which may help couples’ wedding days go smoothly.

1.

Host everything at a single location Couples who want to simplify their wedding day can select a site that can host the ceremony and reception and also house guests. The cost of such facilities may be more affordable than couples think, as transportation costs will be minimal and

14

| Wedding Guide

the venue may offer discounts on group packages.

2.

Think about a day coordinator Couples who cannot afford a wedding planner to handle all of the details often find that a day-of-service provider is within their budget. This person can handle all of the details of the wedding day so brides and grooms can fully immerse themselves in the festivities.

3.

Bring extra cash Unexpected expenses may pop up. Couples may have to feed an extra member of the band or a guest who was able to get a babysitter at the last minute. Brides and grooms may want to offer a bigger tip than anticipated to the waitstaff or deejay who went above and beyond.

4.

Learn how to bustle Walking around with a freeflowing train all day can become tiring

for brides. Brides should make sure that one person practices how to bustle the train and will step in to do so for the reception. Also, it may not be the height of fashion, but having a garbage bag on hand can keep the train clean during inclement weather, or if the bride has to trek across grass or soil for photo opportunities.

5.

Give an outgoing person a job Enlist a boisterous friend or family member to wrangle guests for photo opportunities. He or she can be the photographer’s helper and give the happy couple one less thing to do.

6.

Stock the bathroom Some venues will have courtesy items for their guests, but couples also should bring their own necessities, such as breath mints, toothpaste, extra pantyhose, hairspray, lip gloss, and/or sanitary pads.

7.

Be all smiles Couples can’t predict everything that will happen on their wedding day, but they can help create the mood. Smiling couples can make things better for everyone, even when zippers break or someone gets the chicken instead of the salmon.

Impress

How to curtail your wedding spending and still wow guests

T

ying the knot can be an expensive endeavor. According to The Knot 2017 Real Weddings Study, which surveyed nearly 13,000 brides and grooms in the United States who got married in 2017, the average cost of a wedding was more than $33,000. That figure may surprise some couples planning their weddings, many of whom may not be able to afford spending so much on their ceremonies and receptions. Couples may feel pressure to compete with friends and relatives whose weddings they have attended in the past, and that may compel some to stretch their budgets and even go into debt to finance their nuptials. However, there are ways for couples to curtail their wedding spending and impress guests at the same time.

Trim the guest list The 2017 Real Weddings Study found that couples spent an average of $268 per guest in 2017. Many couples are recognizing that smaller guest lists are a great way to lower wedding spending, and The Knot study found that the average guest count decreased from 149 in 2009 to 136 in 2017. Trimming the guest list may seem harsh, but couples who work together need not cut their guest lists in half. By working together, couples can likely find between 10 and 15 acquaintances on their initial lists who won’t be offended if they’re not invited. Couples who spend the 2017 average per guest can save nearly $3,000 by removing just 10 people from their guest lists. Expand your venue horizons A greater number of couples are looking beyond traditional wedding venues and opting for more unique locales to tie the knot. The 2017 Real Weddings Study found that 15 percent of 2017 weddings were held on farms, ranches, and even in barns, while just two percent of weddings 16

| Wedding Guide

were hosted in such venues in 2009. The growing popularity of unique wedding venues may make some locations more expensive than couples anticipate, but a willingness to tie the knot in a unique venue greatly increases couples’ options, improving the chances they will find more affordable venues. Cut back on guest entertainment Customizing experiences for guests is a major reason why today’s couples are spending so much more per guest than their predecessors. Spending for customized guest entertainment, which includes things like photo booths, sparklers, and video booths, tripled between 2009 and 2017. Couples may want to give their guests unique experiences, but should not

stretch their budgets or go into debt to do so. Tie the knot in winter Summer and fall were the most popular wedding seasons in 2017, and that does not figure to change anytime soon. Couples can take advantage of those trends by getting married in winter, a slow season for wedding venues and vendors, who might be more flexible with their prices. The most popular months to tie the knot in 2017 were September, June and October, so couples who don’t want to wed in winter but want to avoid paying top prices should avoid those three months. Weddings are expensive, but couples can find ways to cut costs without sacrificing quality.

Advice

Tasteful planning 2017, the average wedding hosted 136 guests. While couples might be tempted by specialty dishes when choosing their wedding menus, couples who are hosting dozens, if not hundreds, of guests should keep things simple.

Don’t hesitate to offer a favorite food Specialty entrées might not be a great choice, especially at large receptions where lots of mouths must be fed, but a couple who has a favorite food that’s symbolic of their relationship should not hesitate to offer it during the cocktail hour. For example, a couple who met in Thailand may want to offer a favorite Thai dish.

Consider potential allergies In regard to entrées, make sure guests with food allergies can choose something that won’t make them sick. According to Food Allergy Research and Education, an organization devoted to improving the quality of life of individuals with food allergies, some common foods cause the majority of allergic reactions. Peanuts, soy, sesame, and shellfish are among the most common food allergies, according to the organization. It also notes that allergies to wheat, milk, and eggs are common in children. While such foods can still be served at receptions, make sure to also include foods that are unlikely to trigger allergic

Offer an elaborate dessert The last bite guests will take is dessert, so couples who want their guests to go home raving about the food may want to offer something special after the entrées have been taken away. Some guests may not indulge, but those who do might end their nights thinking about the delicious dessert they enjoyed as the festivities drew to a close. If the dessert is especially unique, offer something more traditional alongside it for more hesitant guests. Choosing a wedding menu should be fun. Menus should reflect not only couples’ tastes but also include some popular foods so no one goes home hungry.

Smart choices for a delicious reception menu

W

eddings are memorable for a host of reasons. While couples remember their weddings because they mark the day they officially tied the knot, guests may remember weddings for other reasons, including the food served at the reception. Some wedding venues are known for their stunning landscapes, while others build their reputations on unique interiors that provide unforgettable ambiance. But regardless of where weddings take place, guests are liable to discuss the food served at the reception. Guests might rave about the escargot or complain that the fish was flaky, but couples who choose reception menus wisely can go a long way toward ensuring there are more compliments than complaints once the dinner bell rings.

Don’t zero in on specialties According to The Knot 2017 Real Weddings Study, a survey of nearly 13,000 brides and grooms who tied the knot in 18

reactions. Couples can even ask guests to inform them of any food allergies.

Advice

Second

Getting remarried? A few tips to consider

T

aking a chance on love and marriage for the second (or third) time is certainly worthy of celebration. The Pew Research Center reports that at least four in 10 new marriages now include at least one partner who has been married before, a trend that is on the rise. Planning a second wedding can be challenging, as individuals may be worried about proper etiquette, superstitions, or meeting the expectations of others. But there are no hard rules governing second weddings. Now that couples are older and a bit more experienced, wedding planning may be met with greater enthusiasm and patience. These tips can help the process along:

Dress it up Brides need not eschew white if they prefer to wear it for their second weddings. White, cream, ivory, or other shades are perfectly acceptable. Also, brides can make their gowns as lavish or as simplistic as they desire. The length and style of the dress should reflect the formality and scope of the event. Make it unique Couples who have been married before may want to set this new occasion apart from their previous weddings. Brides magazine experts suggest discussing previous celebrations and what can be done differently this time around. Couples can use this opportunity to get to know each other more intimately by personalizing their festivities. Don’t feel beholden to intimate affairs Second weddings tend to be more intimate, as guest lists tend to be smaller and couples tying the knot again may prefer more intimacy and less hustle and bustle. But couples should not avoid inviting people simply because second weddings are typically small affairs. Invite as many friends and family as you want and as your budget allows. 20

| Wedding Guide

Set up a registry Established couples may have the household basics already in place, but registries can include fun or entertaining gifts that speak to couples’ interests. These may include home theater systems, fancy cookware, athletic equipment, or even funds for travel. Involve the children Couples who have children can make them a special part of their second wedding celebrations. Kids can play any role in the ceremony, depending on their age. If the second marriage comes after an amicable divorce, couples can invite their former spouses to provide support

to their children so they can feel comfortable in the wedding. Be prepared The marriage application process is similar the second time around, but additional documents, such as a divorce decree or death certificate, may be necessary. These legal documents also will be needed for men and women who intend to change their last names after getting married. A second marriage deserves as much celebration as the first and gives couples an opportunity to express their love for each other and their appreciation to their friends and families.

Advice

Rock the band selection B

ooking a live band for a wedding or another special event can be a great idea. The atmosphere live musicians can provide is unmatched. They offer a level of excitement that may not be met by other musical options. But some couples may find the prospect of booking live entertainment a bit challenging, especially if they’ve never hired musicians for an event before. Here are some tips to make the process go smoothly: Get recommendations. Just like you might before booking other vendors, seek advice from friends or family members who have recently gotten hitched or had live performers at their events. They may have wonderful things to say about particular bands or performers.

Individuals also can consider a resource such as HireLiveMusicians.com, a global musician database that can help couples narrow down their options. Decide on when the musicians play. Live musicians can entertain guests throughout the ceremony and reception, but the longer musicians play, the more they’re likely to cost. Work with musicians to develop a schedule that suits your budget. Discuss the theme. Make sure musicians understand the type of atmosphere you’re hoping to create. A band that customarily plays swing or big-band era

songs may not fit in at weddings with more modern themes. Understand the fees. Musicians may have fees related to their agents, cartage (extra given to musicians who carry large equipment), mileage costs, travel time, lighting, and other factors that affect the overall price. Discuss these fees before signing any agreements. Be sure the venue fits. Live musicians are great but not if the space is too small. Otherwise, the music can be too loud and overpowering, or the band will not have adequate space to set up. Consider these factors before making any decisions.

Advice

Unity & creativity Ideas to celebrate coming together in marriage

W

eddings celebrate the joining together of hearts, families, and homes. The unification of a couple pledging vows to each other is the key component of the ceremony, and unity rituals are common during both traditional and nontraditional weddings. Unity ceremonies represent the magic of two people coming together as one. Unity rituals may be built into certain religious or cultural weddings as a normal part of the festivities. Other couples may want to embrace the idea of a unity ceremony to add something extra special to their ceremonies. Couples seeking creative options for unity rituals as part of their wedding ceremonies can explore these clever ideas: Candle lighting: The lighting of a unity candle is one of the more recognizable and traditional unity rituals. During this ritual, the bride and the 24

| Wedding Guide

groom each light an individual candle and then together light a larger candle, which celebrates them coming together as one. Sand pouring: The pouring of sand into a vessel also is a popular unity ritual. In this ritual, couples choose two sands of different colors and then pour their respective colors into a vessel, allowing the different hues to mix together. This ritual can be expanded to include other family members, with a rainbow of colors blending for a now unified joining of families. Unity cross: Christians may enjoy a unity cross ritual at their ceremony. A unity cross is a decorative cross with a holder, and the cross is held in place by three pins, which symbolize the Father, Son and the Holy Spirit. During this ritual, the bride, groom and officiant will each set a pin in place. Tree planting: Planting a tree or shrub that can grow with the marriage

is a green idea and one that takes unity rituals to a different level. Couples can place the sapling in a decorative pot and then take turns watering it. Later the tree can be planted outside the couple’s first home. Lasso ceremony: This ritual is traditional in many Spanish- and Filipinospeaking countries. After vows are exchanged, the officiant wraps a floral garland or rosary around the couple. At the end of the ceremony, the garland is saved as a symbol of unity and love. Handfasting: This ritual comes from an ancient Celtic tradition that bounds the bride and groom’s right hands together during the wedding ceremony. Handfasting symbolizes couples’ commitments to one another. Flower ceremony: In this ritual, couples can exchange roses or a favorite flower and then place them in a vase or basket. All members of the family also are invited to place a single flower into the vessel, which ultimately results in a beautiful floral display. Couples can create their own unique unity ceremonies. The blending of any two materials, such as wine, tea, glass beads, or paint, or even the traditional tying of knots will convey the symbolism of joining as one.

Advice

Weather or not

Have a plan for any of Mother Nature’s whims

S

ummer approaches with the promise of warm temperatures. Weather is one reason why summer is such a popular season to tie the knot. But just because sunny skies and rising mercury are par for the course, that does not mean Mother Nature won’t invite herself to the festivities — and attempt to upstage happy couples in the process. Some feel it’s good luck for couples to get rain on their wedding days, but many couples would trade in a little of that luck for clear skies. However, weather can be fickle, and couples who build contingency plans into their wedding festivities are much more likely to overcome inclement weather than couples without such plans:

Have solutions for sun and heat Couples don’t want their wedding guests or bridal party members passing out due to heat exhaustion. Make sure to 26

| Wedding Guide

offer shade if the ceremony or reception is outside. Stock the area with cold bottles of water or a chilled lemonade stand. Have fans and umbrellas available just in case guests need a way to protect themselves from the sun. Strong storms Over the course of hot and humid days, storm clouds can develop and roll in. Afternoon thunderstorms are quite common on summer days. Accommodate for sudden downpours by hosting early luncheon receptions or ensure there is a plan B that includes a covered area. Couples can stash spare shoes or even rain slickers in a car to keep their wedding attire protected against rain as they dash between venues or take photos. Embrace the rain Vivid skies with lightning or overcast days can make for unique and striking

wedding photography. Couples needn’t look at the downside of rain, but rather they should see the opportunities for one-of-a-kind memories. Keep a generator on standby Storms may knock out power. Some reception halls or banquet facilities may have their own backup power, but be sure to address how power outages are handled. If need be, bring in a portable generator to keep the reception room cooled by fans. Plan for wind Coastal outdoor weddings present beautiful backdrops for weddings. But being near the shore may mean accepting windy conditions. Tie down tents and use weights to keep wedding programs or other papers from catching a current. The bride and her wedding party should opt for free-flowing tresses so they needn’t worry about intricate updos coming undone. Maintain a sense of humor It’s impossible to predict wedding day weather, but staying calm, going with the flow and laughing at things they can’t control can help couples make memories that last a lifetime.

Flower

power Which cut blooms will last the longest?

F

lowers may look beautiful in gardens and even when snipped and brought inside to brighten up a mantel or dining table. Unfortunately, cut flowers have a finite shelf life. While cut blooms can’t live forever, certain varieties will outlast others. Choosing flowers wisely for wedding centerpieces or keepsakes can help couples enjoy selected flowers longer:

Peonies Peonies can last for about a week or two when brought indoors. HGTV says to snip the stems when the buds are tight, wrap them in newspaper, and store them in the refrigerator until you’re ready to arrange. Zinnias These bright blooms can last for three to four weeks and are best harvested in summer. Related to the sunflower, zinnias are available in a wide range of colors. Chrysanthemums Widely referred to as “mums,” these midsummer to late-fall flowers can last between three and four weeks after being cut. Mums can be used to fill out floral displays because they tend to be inexpensive but durable flowers. Coneflower The purple coneflower is popular, but coneflowers are available in many colors aside from purple. Coneflowers attract butterflies and are beautiful in cut displays. Ranunculus Ranunculus mimic the look of roses and display layer after layer of silky, crepe-like petals. These blooms can last a week or more in vases if they’re put in water right after being cut. 28

| Wedding Guide

Carnations Another budget-friendly flower, carnations are popular from early spring until late summer. Available in many hues, they can be used in conjunction with other blooms to create well-rounded floral displays that may last between two and three weeks. Lilies Lilies are traditional flowers that are beautiful to behold. Lilies are available in various sizes and colors and can be bought fresh year-round. Lilies often last longer than a week after being cut. Look for lilies with tight buds, as such flowers tend to last the longest. Gladioli The lovely flowers of the verticalgrowing gladiolus, which is sometimes

referred to as the “sword lily,” are available in yellow, peach, pink, white, and other hues. These bulb-based plants can last up to two weeks after being cut and add variety and texture to floral displays. Although advice varies on how to keep cut flowers fresh the longest, veteran florist Nic Faitos, senior partner at Starbright Floral Design in New York, who has provided his floral expertise for Reader’s Digest, says the best approach is to keep vase water clean. In addition, ProFlowers suggests keeping cut blooms in a cool room away from direct sunlight and heat.

A DOG walks the aisle Company helps couples involve their furry friend in their special day BY JAMES HARNEY

O

n average, between 50 and 75 weddings are held annually at La Cañada Flintridge Country Club in La Cañada, Calif. It’s a safe bet, though, that not very many have featured a fourlegged ring bearer. But that’s exactly what happened at the nuptials of Kara Conklin and Virgil Merritt, who tied the knot on Oct. 14, 2017, at La Cañada, with Virgil’s wedding band proudly trotted down the aisle by the couple’s beloved pit mix, Cosmo. “Cosmo was a rock star! She stole the show! Cosmo wore his ring on her collar,” Kara remembers. “It was such an amazing moment and surprise for everyone. The guests loved it. Cosmo was so happy to be there and was so well mannered!” As it turns out, Cosmo’s exemplary behavior was no accident; the pooch was guided all along the way by Aaron Wesselman, a handler provided by Oh To Be 30

| Wedding Guide

A Dog At Your Wedding, a specialty service based in California and New York that prepares and handles pets whose masters want them to be an active part of a wedding ceremony. “Aaron was a total professional, and we absolutely could not have pulled it off without the help of Oh To Be A Dog At Your Wedding,” Kara insists. “Virgil was shocked! [Cosmo] went right over and jumped up and kissed him in the face, like she had rehearsed it a thousand times! There is one photograph where she is looking up at us both with excitement, as if she knew how proud she was that she brought Virgil’s ring down the aisle!” Founded just last year, Oh To Be A Dog At Your Wedding is an offshoot of Oh To Be A Dog, a dog-walking and pet-sitting service launched in 2010 by Shannon Sardella Arnold. “When I was 2 years old, I was bitten by a dog,” said Arnold, now 38. “After that, my mother did not let me have a

dog as a pet. But ever since I was young, I have always been an animal lover.” Arnold grew up, and at first pursued a career in marketing. But the pull of her affinity for animals proved too strong, and she quit, “got a job in a pet care facility, and fell in love with the concept of caring for animals.” Arnold started her second career in Pasadena, Calif., and after working for “various pet day care outfits for about 12 years,” decided to go into business for herself in 2010, creating Oh To Be A Dog, introducing a tech twist to dog walking and pet care. “I think being on the cutting edge of technology is the biggest thing,” she said. “We have a system called Pet Check Technology. Basically, you install a QR code in your home, and use an app on your phone to call us when you want our service... We come in — no one needs to be there — and notify clients we’ve arrived. That’s the first step. We scout out the end of the walk and then notify

the client again that we’ve completed the walk along with notes with photos and a GPS map of where we’ve walked them.” In eight years, Oh To Be A Dog’s client base has grown to 150, and Arnold says that along the way, some of them approached her, explained that they wanted their dogs to be present at their weddings, and asked if Oh To Be A Dog could provide that service. “It started out with one to two clients asking, but as the numbers grew, I thought, ‘this should be a division of my company,’ and with that in mind, last year I officially launched Oh To Be A Dog At Your Wedding.” The day rate for the service, Arnold says, is $1,000 to handle a dog for a fivehour ceremony; less — perhaps $300 — if the pet is involved for a smaller-scale event, such as a marriage proposal or rehearsal. Even though she and her Oh To Be A Dog team are familiar with a variety of breeds and their different behavior patterns, the big difference in providing the new service, Arnold explains, is getting dogs acclimated to an unfamiliar space, around a large group of people. “Sometimes it’s a challenge, because

Shannon Sardella Arnold, founder of Oh To Be A Dog and Oh To Be A Dog At Your Wedding.

you can’t keep certain breeds, like a French Bulldog, out in the heat for five hours. Other dogs can become anxious around large crowds,” she said. “What we try to do is bring the dog to the venue in advance, and let them sniff around and

get familiar with the space, and then let them be a part of the wedding rehearsal, if possible.” Arnold says her Oh To Be A Dog business has expanded from California to New York, largely because in June 2017, wedding bells rang for her and her spouse, Jackie, and she moved to Manhattan because Jackie is a singer on Broadway. So far this year, Oh To Be A Dog At Your Wedding has 10 bookings, but Arnold is optimistic that number will continue to grow. “Absolutely we’ll get more business,” said the woman whose the proud owner of Rocko, a chihuahua-Boston terrier mix. “The New York tri-state area is a top wedding destination, so is southern California. Martha Stewart has a wedding line for dogs. Pets are often the center of their families, and I’m convinced [involving pets in weddings] is a growth market.” Ask Kara Conklin and Virgil Merritt, and they’ll say the investment was well worth it. “Cosmo is such an important part of who we are,” Kara said. “Cosmo completes our family and it wouldn’t have been the same without her there.”

Never forget

Creative ways to preserve wedding memories

C

ouples’ wedding days are momentous occasions, and couples want their memories of the day they tied the knot to endure long after the final guest has departed. Weddings can be amazing, but they only last a few hours. Memories can be forever if they are effectively documented. The following are some ways for couples to permanently memorialize their wedding days:

Dry the bouquet Wedding bouquets can be freezedried or chemically preserved so that the colors, textures, and the volume of the blooms can appear just as vibrant as they were on couples’ wedding days. After preservation, the bouquet can be displayed in a vase or in a specially prepared shadow box with other mementos. Create a custom locket Brides can wear a piece of their wedding gown day after day with a custom necklace or locket. All they need to do is 32

trim a small piece of the lace or other embellishment from the gown and enclose it in the locket. Jewelry designers also may be able to convert a section of the gown pattern into metal through a casting process. Have guests sign the label Purchase a special bottle of wine or champagne and ask guests to sign the label or the bottle itself. Store the bottle until a special occasion, such as a memorable anniversary, and then toast to a happy marriage.

bears, which can be passed down to future generations. Create bouquet jewelry Encapsulate favorite wedding flowers into a resin pendant, bracelet, or earrings. Frame the invitation Display the wedding invitation in a beautiful frame with custom matting. Revisit the site On their anniversaries, couples can visit their ceremony site or have brunch or dinner at the venue where the reception took place. Take an “after” picture to display with the “before” shot from the wedding day. Make an invitation ornament Cut the wedding invitation into strips and place it inside of a hollow glass ornament. Seal the top and hang with a ribbon.

Make a cake replica Ask an artist to make a miniature replica of the wedding cake out of pottery. Put the clay cake out for display or ask for it to be made small enough to serve as a Christmas tree ornament.

Design a greeting card scrapbook Turn all of those special handwritten messages and well-wishes into a scrapbook so that memories can be revisited time and again.

The planning may take months and the wedding mere hours, but well-documented wedding day memories can last forever.

Au naturale Rustic bouquets add natural flair to wedding celebrations

C

ouples opting to get back to basics, streamline their nuptials, and create more intimate and less superficial affairs often gravitate toward rustic celebrations to showcase their ideals. Rustic weddings also may appeal to environmentalists and men and women who want their weddings to be as eco-friendly as possible. Rustic weddings may include those ceremonies and receptions that take place outdoors or in abodes, such as barns, wineries, castles, or converted silos or town factories. In fact, Bridal Guide says that barn weddings have never been more popular — among both urban and rural couples alike. Coordinating a rustic wedding may mean letting go of perceived notions of how everything from food to favors to flowers should be. In fact, one way to describe rustic weddings — and especially the floral arrangements that adorn them — is “purposely imperfect.” Rustic wedding bouquets may seem like they were plucked right out of the garden or grabbed through a stroll in a meadow. They’re rarely symmetrical or feature the customary flowers of more formal wedding celebrations. When designing rustic bouquets, florists may keep the stems of wildflowers or other blooms untethered for a relaxed feel. Long stemmed arrangements are quite popular, and trends point toward bouquets that are loosely tied with raffia, twine, vines and other natural materials rather than more refined ribbon. Another way rustic bouquets set themselves apart is with the introduction of other elements into the arrangements. Not merely blooms and greenery, rustic pieces may feature twigs, vines, berries, scabiosa pods, ivy, and feathery ferns. The heights of elements in the bouquet are varied, and the bouquets will not have an overly uniform shape. Rustic bouquets are far from pretentious, and brides shouldn’t feel that these bouquets are delicate or will fall apart when handled. When planning a rustic wedding, couples can work with their florists to create bouquets and arrangements that fit with their visions. 34

View of a lady Iconic Statue of Liberty is backdrop for couple’s wedding By Ily Goyanes | Photos by Sarah Tew Photography

T

he Statue of Liberty is arguably the most emblematic landmark in all of New York, so it makes sense that she would be a welcome backdrop for wedding pictures. Liberty Warehouse, the wedding venue chosen by school social worker Maura and commercial mortgage broker Andrew for their June nuptials, gave Lady Liberty plenty of opportunities to photobomb the couple’s pictures. The majestic indoor and outdoor venue is located directly on Pier 41 in Red Hook, directly on the water’s edge, and was constructed in the pre-Civil War 1850s. “The backdrop of New York harbor is not just beautiful, but full of symbolism,” says Andrew. “The chuppah under 42

which we were married perfectly framed the Statue of Liberty behind us. Looking back at the photos now it feels like a really poignant symbol of the many generations in our families that came before us and upon whose shoulders we stand.” The romantic road to the couple’s summer wedding on June 1, 2018, began almost four years prior when the two first laid eyes on each other at the restaurant Barney Greengrass on Manhattan’s Upper West Side. “I was at breakfast with my cousin,” recalls Maura. “Andrew was sitting across from us. I stole a few harmless glances whenever he would look up from his newspaper to take a sip of his coffee. When he left the restaurant — that we

were packed like sardines in — I moved our table over so he could slip by, and when I did, he asked me what I had for breakfast, which was the same thing he ordered — bagel and lox.” Adds Andrew, “I was doing my normal Sunday morning routine and heading in to read the newspaper and have a bagel and lox. Actually, I never told Maura this, but the clocks had moved forward for daylight savings time that night and I almost didn’t go because I like to go early before it gets crowded.” He continues, “When I saw Maura sitting at her table, I thought to myself, ‘This girl looks like she is wearing the shirt she slept in, woke up with a hangover, and rolled out of bed and into that seat — and she is still the most beautiful girl I’ve ever seen. I will regret it forever if I don’t talk to her.’ ” When he walked past her table he said, “Oh sorry, I hope I didn’t knock anything over on your table — it’s so crowded in here!” It was the best way he could think of to start a conversation, he remembers. Andrew eventually asked Maura if she was new in town and she just so happened to be. Being the gentleman that he is — not to mention already smitten with her — Andrew offered to show her around and they exchanged phone numbers. “My first thoughts were either this guy is really nice, or a serial killer,” jokes Maura. It turned out to be the former, because when Andrew proposed in April of 2017, Maura happily accepted. “I had just gotten home from work and he had just returned from Michigan,” she recalls. “He asked me to marry him in our living room. We kept it a secret for a few hours while we went to dinner and took a stroll, then we called 44

everyone we knew to share our news.” Adds Andrew, “I actually flew to Detroit to see Maura’s parents because I am a little old-fashioned and I wanted to ask for their blessing in person. I told Maura that I was going to Michigan for work to inspect an apartment building. When I was flying home I realized that she was going to start interrogating me on my trip and there is nothing romantic about saying, ‘ok, you caught me, it’s all a lie, want to get married?’ So, as soon as I got home from my trip I asked her to be my wife as fast as I could.” The day of the wedding, Maura says, felt “Like seeing your best friend at the most rad spot in the world in the best moment in time and realizing this is my person.” The groom was equally psyched: “I was so excited to see Maura, and when I did, I was overwhelmed with happiness. It felt like just the two of us were alone in the world with the

swirling wedding day chaos of family and friends fading into the distance. It was an incredible moment of connection that filled me with joy.” Due to the fact that Andrew’s sister had an amazing roster of vendors for her wedding, Maura and Andrew’s planning went easier than most. “We borrowed many vendors from my sister’s wedding, including our phenomenal photographer, Sarah Tew. That significantly reduced the process of searching and vetting that many people have to go through,” explains Andrew. Adds Maura, “Honestly, it wasn’t hard, but it would have been impossible without my most rad mother-in-law, Randi Ott.” The couple chose not to have a wedding cake — a decision not at all regreted by either party. Explains Maura, “I’m glad we didn’t because everyone was too busy rocking the dance floor, thanks to Mixtape!” Andrew and Maura’s romance is truly a tale of kismet and coming around full circle. “When I first saw Maura she was having breakfast with the person who turned out to be her best friend and cousin, Maggie. Maggie was licensed as a wedding officiant to officiate our wedding, bringing the story full circle. Of course, Barney Greengrass got to play a supporting roll as well by catering the breakfast after our party,” shares Andrew. “The first part of our journey together started with cousin Maggie and a bagel and lox, and so it felt right to start our life together as a married couple the same way!”

bloom love in

Couple marries surrounded by lush florals at Brooklyn Botanic Garden By Ily Goyanes | Photos by Sarah Tew Photography

P

icture yourself and your betrothed at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden standing under the legendary cherry blossoms on one of the only 12 days of the year that said blossoms are in bloom. Now imagine that, due to weather conditions, the blossoms had begun to fall early, cascading to the ground in a flurry of perfect pink, covering the ground in a soft, romantic spectral color, creating a natural and splendorous foundation under you and your soulmate’s feet. That was the scene at Stephanie and Jake’s wedding a few short months ago, on May 12, 2018. “In some ways, it looked even more beautiful than when they are in full bloom,” recalls Stephanie, who goes by Stevie. “We moved the ceremony inside because it started to rain, but the Palm House at the botanical garden is a large dome-like glass building. That meant that guests could see the raindrops falling and the trees outside, while being inside. It all felt very magical.” The lovebirds first met on the rooftop bar at the Hudson Hotel near Central Park. Both were attending a mutual friend’s birthday party. As Stevie ordered a drink, Jake came up and introduced himself to her. “I saw her from across the bar and immediately wanted to introduce myself,” Jake remembers thinking. “I thought, ‘this girl is stunning, I need to go say hi.’ ” Stevie instantly warmed up to her future husband: “I thought he was really goofy, but had this great energy to him. He was warm and charming.” Five years later, the two tied the knot. Stevie wasn’t nervous on the big day. “I knew at the end of the day I was marrying the person I 46

was meant to be with, and regardless of how the day unraveled, we would always have each other,” says Stevie. Jake had a small touch of the jitters, though. “I was nervous-excited — there’s so much build up and so many emotions. I couldn’t believe the day had finally arrived,” he says. In fact, Jake was so excited about marrying his beloved bride, that he kind of jumped the gun during the ceremony. “One of the weird, funny things that happened during the wedding was I accidentally tried to kiss Stevie right after she said her vows, completely forgetting the whole ‘kiss-the-bride part’ doesn’t come until very end,” he jokes. Who can blame him? He was stunned the second he saw her in her dress. “She totally wowed me. I was expecting her to look beautiful, but not that beautiful. I didn’t know what her dress would like, but it completely surpassed all my expectations,” Jake recalls fondly. When Stevie caught sight of him for the first time that day, she says it was the best feeling ever. “We had spent months planning this wedding and now it was all coming to fruition,” she says. “After being separated all morning, I was so happy we could finally begin celebrating together.” Of course, all weddings first start with a proposal, and Jake was understandably nervous that night as well. “We were going out to dinner, and then after, walking past the restaurant where we had our first date, Buvette, which is where I planned to propose,” he explains. “Stevie put on an outfit that was very casual at first and I told her she should probably change her outfit to something

nicer — knowing that she would be meeting up with all her friends and family later after the proposal,” he continues. “She immediately got suspicious because I’ve never told her to change her outfit before.” Fortunately for him, she just agreed to change her outfit and they went out to dinner, at which point Jake’s nerves settled a bit and everything ran smoothly. As planned, he popped the question as they walked past the location of their first date (and their first kiss), she said yes, and he took her to the surprise celebration he had planned, where their family and closest friends were waiting to congratulate the couple and celebrate their engagement. From there, planning the wedding was pretty easy due to their shared vision. “I think in terms of making decisions, Jake and I were very clear and aligned on how we wanted the wedding to look and feel. Setting up meetings and choosing vendors was stressful at times, but once we got to the meeting we knew exactly what we wanted. Our vendors were all amazing and really helped bring our vision to life,” says Stevie. And much like their fairy tale venue, their wedding went off without a hitch … well, maybe one very small hitch, or stitch, as the case may be. “Our friends really like to have a good time — so much so that one of my friends split his pants wide open on the dance floor,” Jake laughs. “Our wedding planner graciously stitched his pants so he could get back on the dance floor.” Talk about vendors that go above and beyond. 48

a parting gift

horoscopes CAPRICORN Dec. 22–Jan. 19

Capricorn takes commitment seriously. If she’s going to utter sacred vows and then seal them with “till death do us part,” she’s going to mean it. Cue Capricorn Kate Moss waiting until she was 37 to tie the knot. Your wedding needs to be understated with a VIP twist — Moss’s fashionable affair ended up in the pages of Vogue, after all — and family is big, too. Moss and daughter Lila Grace had a private wedding photo shoot while extended family, like longtime friends John Galliano, designed her dress and Mario Testino, who has shooting the model since she was 16, photographed the event.

AQUARIUS Jan. 20–Feb. 18

No shoes for you: you’re getting married barefoot on the beach or in one of your BFF’s fabulous backyards. As the sign of group activity and friendship, your big day will be fun and filled with creative touches that will ensure that your eccentric guest list — from your college buddy you met at Gwar show to your aura-reading bank teller — have a great time. Take Aquarius Jennifer Aniston, who shook up her vows by promising to always make ex-husband Brad Pitt banana milk shakes. Most likely you’re marrying your best friend, so the vibe will be as playful as your union.

PISCES Feb. 19–March 20

You are a dreamer and the sign of fantasy, so your wedding will be “your” idea of a fairy tale. You have your own sense style and alternative tastes, so you will likely want creative control over aesthetic aspects like playlist (Cut Copy, Wilco, Tom Waits), food (Ethiopian), and decor (a cool mix of vintage and modern). Your ruling planet is Neptune, so the sea is in your soul. Think about embracing your inner-mermaid with a fish-tail braid, a netted veil, or details dripping in pearls.

ARIES March 21–April 19

Lady Gaga and Mariah Carey: you share a sign with some fiery females, so your wedding should be as big as your personality. It’s got to have some sizzle. 50

| Wedding Guide

Yet not every ram is into large, fabulous affairs. Some may feed their flames by having a quickie City Hall wedding and then blowing the bulk of her wedding wad on an elaborate trip for two to Tahiti, Tasmania, or Tulum Beach … or all three.

TAURUS April 20–May 30

Let us plant a seed, earth sign: try an outdoor wedding. Not backyard barbecue, but one filled with twinkling white lights twisted elegantly into the branches of an old oak tree; large, canopied tents lit by chandeliers; wild flowers; and locally sourced gourmet food. By nature, you tend to be laid back, but a lack of luxury on a bull’s big day may have her seeing red. So be prepared to get a little dirt under your nails while planning, to get what you want — or on your feet at your reception when you kick off your heels and dance!

GEMINI May 21–June 20

Your altar? The mouth of a volcano or in a cage submerged in a shark tank. If you’re going to make this big of a commitment, you’re going to need a shot of adrenaline. Yet, as unorthodox as your ceremony may be, dear twin, expect your duel personality to show face at your reception where sweet, sincere moments will be laced with light puffs of pure fun like your grandma hopping into the DJ booth or a spontaneous food fight.

CANCER June 21–July 22

Admit it: Hallmark ads make you cry and you were wrecked for weeks after watching “The Notebook.” As a crab, you tend to be sentimental, and your wedding will be filled with teary-eyed toasts and details that honor your nearest and dearest. Tradition and family is very important to you, so along with your mother’s engagement ring, that you most likely already have, try wearing her wedding dress as well.

LEO July 23–Aug. 22

Lights, camera, bride! Your wedding will be the biggest event your Facebook newsfeed has ever seen! Leos love the spotlight, so everything

about your wedding will have a “too much” quality: too much food, too much entertainment, too much glamour! But, be forewarned, lovely lion, don’t cross over into “My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding” territory with a dress covered in sparkling, pink LED butterflies. Whittle down the wow-factor just a bit and you’re sure to earn a #chicwedding hash tag when photos of your big day go viral.

VIRGO Aug. 23–Sept. 22

You’re a pragmatic, earthbound lady. You can handle a spreadsheet like a knight with a lance, so you may want to plan your entire wedding all by yourself. But be realistic. You’re a no-fuss gal, but your wedding is the one day it’s completely appropriate to be a princess. So, get your Kate Middleton on and hire some professional help. Let go of some control and it will be as rewarding as the first time you kissed your prince.

LIBRA Sept. 23–Oct. 22

Libra is the sign of beauty and love. Most likely you’ve had a quite a few suitors and the one you’re choosing to marry is pretty special. Honor this by allowing your well-balanced nature to come out by letting your man have some say in the wedding’s design. Even if he makes questionable choices, like wanting to include a Superman reference in the ceremony or a beer pong table during the reception, your innate sense of style and charm will refine these decisions and the ultimate compromise will be elegant.

SCORPIO Oct. 23–Nov. 21

You know exactly what you want. Vera Wang gown, Harry Winston ring, private Etta James performance. You’ve been dreaming about this day since you were a kid and the private, intimate affair is the perfect opportunity to show off your exquisite taste. Show off your creative side in the details: opt for a dress in a color other than white or arrive on horseback. Whatever you choose, your wedding will be breathtaking, memorable, romantic, and picture-worthy.

SAGITTARIUS Nov. 22–Dec. 21

Your wedding? Think: Costa Rica, on the beach, after a day of surfing. Guests? Your family, closest friends … and maybe a few monkeys. As an archer, you’re athletic, adventurous, independent, and a lover of travel. You definitely have the cool-chick vibe down pat — so even if you have a reception in a humdrum banquet hall, you’ll spice up the place with a few aerialists dropping from the ceiling with a plate of hors d’oeuvres.
