Sometimes, it’s good for kids to get a reality check, with a firsthand look of what life was like before technology, when hard work was necessary for just simple living. Fortunately, there are several living history sites throughout the northeast that welcome families with interpretive, but fun, displays and activities.

The Ultimate Summer Camp Packing Checklist By Jess Michaels

I

t’s never too early to start thinking about what your child needs to bring to camp. Put a shopping date on the calendar and plan to take your child so he can participate in choosing the items on the camp packing list. Once your shopping is complete, make sure to label EVERYTHING so your child’s things don’t become part of the camp lost & found. Finally, pack together. Shopping and packing together makes your child more involved in the process and comfortable knowing what’s being sent to camp. Make sure to check your camp’s policy on electronics. Most camps don’t allow for phones or devices with Internet capabilities. Please respect the camp’s packing list and don’t include items that are forbidden. While each camp sends a packing list to all enrolled families, here is a general guideline to help you plan.

Packing ❑ 2 soft trunks Clothing ❑ T-shirts ❑ Long sleeve T-shirts ❑ Long pants/jeans ❑ Sweatpants/leggings ❑ Sweatshirts ❑ Dressy outfits Undergear ❑ Underwear ❑ Socks ❑ Sleep wear Outerwear ❑ Rain jacket ❑ Light jacket ❑ Baseball hat ❑ Sunglasses Bed and Bath Needs ❑ Comforter/blankets ❑ Pillow/pillow cases ❑ Sheets ❑ Towels ❑ Washcloths

Save with the Westchester Park Pass A Westchester Park Pass is available to all Westchester County residents, ages 12 and up for $75 and is valid for three years. Residents must apply in person at several area locations including County Offices in Mt. Kisco and White Plains, Ward Pound Ridge Reservation in Cross River and Playland Park in Rye. In summer months passes are also available at pools and golf courses. The pass is required to use county-owned parks, pools, beaches, the tennis courts at Tibbets Brook Park and the boat launch at Glen Island Park. The Park Pass also offers savings at six county-owned golf courses, venue parking fees and county summer camp programs. A Family Park Pass is also available for $150 that covers two adults and two children (ages 12 to 18). You might also like to inquire about the Season Swim Pass, which in addition to the Park Pass allows entry into four Westchester County pools.

Westchester County parks and nature centers offer free family-friendly educational nature programs on weekends, hiking, walking and birding. On the Page, On the Screen: Can’t Wait for

Summer Camp!

By Amy Kelley

W

hen I was young, there were certain books I read many times over. One was about a girl named Judy whose parents owned an ice-cream shop in Brooklyn; another was about a scary old couple who nearly brought the world to an end. But my very favorite was about a girl who attended sleep-away camp. Aaah, camp! Summer adventure, new friends and old, a glorious break from the school year routine. And the anticipation of its many pleasures is a pleasure in itself. For campers new and experienced, there are many terrific books and movies to heighten the anticipation and help kids look forward to all that camp has to offer.

Book It Diedre Johnson, long-time Mount Kisco children’s librarian and now teen librarian in Danbury, Conn. says parents often ask local librarians to help them find books and movies that help build excitement for different life events such as starting school, moving, and yes – attending camp. “We get that kind of question a lot,” says Johnson. “And there are a lot of different resources we can pull from.” For young readers, or as a read-aloud, Johnson recommends Arnie Goes to Camp by Nancy Carlson. Arnie’s a cat that has some trepidation about what camp is like, but he has a great time in all the classic ways – singalongs, new friends and a counselor

12

to admire. Johnson also recommends for the younger set Tacky Goes to Camp by Helen Lester, Arthur Goes to Camp by Marc Brown, and Heidi Heckelbeck Goes to Camp by Wanda Coven, which has a special emphasis on making new friends at camp. Some young children new to camp might also enjoy books about nature by Jim Arnosky. “Then there are other books that address questions about sleeping outdoors such as Starry Skies and Fireflies by Jenny Meyerhoff,” says Johnson. The book I loved is called, Sal Fisher at Girl Scout Camp by Lillian S. Gardiner. It’s out of print now, but the Westchester Library system has a copy and it’s available used. Sal is a 10-year-old girl who’s shy, but learns a lot at camp and winds up having a great time – even after failing the swimming test. Another great scouting-related resource that helps kids get revved up for camping is Boy’s Life magazine, published by the Boy Scouts. The monthly, available by subscription as well as at some libraries and bookstores, prepares kids for camping in a variety of ways, according to Ossining dad Richard Stockton. “Boy’s Life is a companion magazine that comes in two different reading levels, depending on the age of the kid,” says Stockton, a 30-year subscriber for himself and now his son. Stockton is also executive director for the Westchester-Putnam Council of the Boy Scouts of America. Articles in spring issues tend to feature

topics that help prepare kids for camp, such as backpack-buying advice. Articles in the fall tend to feature events and happenings like summer campouts, which “absolutely” help youngsters look forward to camping in the future. Warning: if you don’t have a scout already, you might, if your kids read this magazine. The accounts of camping are compelling, and the Boy Scouts are now open to both girls and boys. Silver Screen Time to curl up for a movie? Race for Your Life, Charlie Brown, again gives the message that challenges at camp can be surmounted. For families who enjoy Charlie Brown and his crew, the Peanuts 1960’s Collection contains a short about camp called It Was A Short Summer, Charlie Brown. For a more modern and dystopian (yet thoroughly entrancing) camp-themed movie

look no further than Holes, although not for the very young. My 12-year-old, Ted, loved it, and despite its portrayal of what are basically imprisoned kids forced to work at back-breaking labor, he looks forward all the more to his first summer sleep-away experience this year, having seen it. “They had to dig holes 5-feet deep and 5-feet wide,” Ted explains with inexplicable glee. His older brother Gus, who has been away at camp before, more prosaically said what’s good about the movie is that “the kids make friends.” Tweenish kids and their families will also enjoy Heavy Weights, a movie about kids under the sway of a brutal, less-than-sane fitness instructor who’s taken over their summer camp, and Space Camp, a cheery, slightly cheesy ’80s flick about kids who are actually launched into space by accident. Another vintage camp movie everyone

loves is The Parent Trap (the original one). The newer one is a good follow-up. And 1989’s Troop Beverly Hills is wacky and cute. Older campers and their families may enjoy preparing for camp by getting ready to preserve those good memories that lie ahead. A camp journal is always a great idea; some encourage drawing as well as writing. Teens might enjoy simple, blank books that reflect their maturity instead of sparkly loud tomes labeled ‘Camp Journal.” Getting ready for camp by absorbing camp-themed entertainment can only enhance the experience, and even prepare campers to get more out of it. “Hopefully kids will be able to learn a skill or two at camp and then be able to use that on a campout or an outing,” Stockton says. Another lonely summer.

For most kids, summer is a wonderful time spent with friends. They make plans and go to camp together. They get together on weekends, at birthday parties, and other social events. But it isn’t that way for everyone. For some, it is a lonely time. Even when they’re around other kids, they just aren’t quite able to make meaningful connections. The good news is that you can help. **For free information, tips, and strategies to help your child make friends and keep them go to: WhereICanBeMe.com

Captiva Island, Florida Family Fun in the Sun at South Seas Island Resort

By Jean Sheff

A

s soon as the weather begins to cool in the northeast many families start dreaming of sun and sand. In the wake of multiple hurricanes last year, some destinations can’t be considered. Not so for Captiva Island, an island in southwest Florida, located near Fort Myers just offshore in the Gulf of Mexico and often associated with the neighboring Sanibel Island. Hurricane Irma did pass by, but the area has been restored and is ready for visitors. Close By If you are travelling with children you’ll appreciate that Captiva is just a three-hour flight from New York to Southwest Florida International Airport. You’ll also be glad to hear that South Seas Island Resort located at the north end of Captiva Island, a 330-acre destination beach resort and wildlife preserve boarded by two-and-a-half miles of white sand beaches, is truly family-friendly. There’s just one way in and one way out of Captiva Island and that’s part of the joy of this secluded getaway. Entering the South Seas complex you’ll get the feeling that life here is easy and safe with plenty of space to play and have fun. Once you check in, if you haven’t arrived in your own vehicle, walk across the street to rent a golf cart. Yes, this is the standard mode of transportation on the island and it’s fun! Boats and bikes are also available for rent. As you take the main road to your housing, and there are a wide variety of

28

Ultimate Guide to Summer | 2018

options – from hotel rooms and beach villas to high end condos and rental homes, some with as many as nine bedrooms, plus a marina in case you’d prefer to stay on your boat – you’ll see adorable wildlife crossing signs such as Duck Crossing and Iguana Crossing. This is the first indication that wildlife is celebrated and protected here. Wildlife On Captiva Island, every effort is made to maintain a natural habitat for all forms of wildlife. As a parent, you’ll appreciate the learning opportunities your children can experience when they get the chance to see so many animals in their natural state. Look for the manatees that generally sing right by the marina walk or in the waters off the shoreline near the main pool. We took a kayak tour offered by Sunny Island Adventures located right in the complex and our expert guide took us close to dolphins, pelicans and osprey. We even saw a lizard disguising himself as he perched high on a tree branch! Just off the property, Captiva Cruises offers a variety of expeditions that offer animal sightings. The one-and-a-half-hour cruise narrated by the Sanibel Captiva Conservation Foundation is an excellent cruise to view dolphins in the wild. You’ll learn facts and lore about the island and its animal creatures. Did you know that a manatee can stay underwater for about 30 minutes? Or that the magnificent frigatebird, that steals fish from other birds, can sleep as they fly allowing it to stay in the air up to two months straight without landing?

For more wildlife adventures off property, head to the J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge that is especially well-known for its bird life. There are trails, an education center and special events throughout the year. Ding Darling (1876-1962), a Pulitzer Prize winning cartoonist and environmentalist, and other dedicated naturalists have worked hard to keep Captiva pristine. Family Activities Besides wildlife, Captiva is also well-known for shells. Shell collectors from all over the world come to this shelling paradise. Some of the more popular shell varieties include conch, junonia, cockle, tulip, sand dollars and coquinas. Make sure to attend the South Seas SHELLebration at Sunset Beach on the property. This daily sunset event includes a “Wish Upon a Seashell Ceremony” and beach games – all near an island-style food and beverage hut. Kids will love ScoutAbout, a search and discovery game where kids use a map to locate 15 Points of Discovery and collect wristbands at each one. Trade in the map and wristbands at Skully’s Family Interactive Center to get a prize and become an official ScoutAbout member with a spot on the ScoutAbout Wall of Fame. Skully’s Family Interactive Center also offers children’s programming such as Turtle Tots and Creative Corner. Plus, there’s an arcade with coin-operated games along with activities for teens. Or perhaps your kids would enjoy the Sanibel Sea School, this nonprofit organization introduces students to

field-based ocean experiences. South Seas has a daily schedule of events with all manner of activities from arts & crafts to stand up paddleboarding, or log rolling in the pool to a Kids’ Night Out evening. Not to mention the gorgeous beach and several pools, including a dedicated kids pool. Grown Up Fun Children are guaranteed to have fun, but so are adults. The South Seas Island Resort Golf Course is a 9-hole golf course with stunning views and immaculately maintained greens. There are also tennis courts, with on-staff pros available for private lessons, a fully equipped fitness center, the Kay Casperson Lifestyle Spa & Boutique and Ambu Yoga offering beach yoga and other classes. For those craving a bit of shopping there are several clothing shops, including J. McLaughlin, in the small mall across the street from the main building. There’s also Captiva Provisions Company, a small, well-stocked and delightful upscale food store. Starbucks also has a presence (so no withdrawal is necessary). There are other

shops throughout the complex for everything from your morning coffee to sunscreen, and beer to handmade sandwiches. Chow Down Let it be said you’ll never go hungry here. For starters, The Crooked Snook Tiki Bar is the pool bar and grub station complete with a thatched roof and friendly servers. Located beachside, The Pointe features sandwiches, salads, burgers, vegetarian selections and a kid’s menu. The Harbourside Bar & Grill serves breakfast and dinner offered inside or out. The fish served here is caught locally in the waters surrounding Captiva Island. Scoops & Slices is open for lunch, a snack or dessert. This retro designed shop has 1950s style booths and offers pizza, frozen yogurt and a wall of candy sold by the pound. For an elegant meal, Doc Ford’s Rum Bar & Grill offers a Caribbean-infused menu and powerful mojitos. Finally If you are planning to travel here during the

holidays know that South Seas gets into the mood with snow making and a holiday stroll with Santa. Family life is constantly celebarted at South Seas and more than once we heard the refrain that what the resort is really about is mutigenerational vacationing. Parents who came as children bring their children back – and grandma and grandpa come too! What’s more, families come back year after year after year. That’s certainly a vote of confidence that Captiva Island and The South Seas Island Resort offer a satisfying family experience. Jean Sheff is editor and co-publisher of Westchester Family as well as an island enthusiast.

Living History Attractions Entertain and Educate By Traci Suppa

S

ometimes, it’s good for kids to get a reality check, with a firsthand look of what life was like before technology, when hard work was necessary for just simple living. Fortunately, there are several living history sites throughout the northeast that

welcome families with interpretive, but fun, displays and activities. History museums across the country are experiencing an ongoing decline in visitors and, according to the American Academy of Arts & Sciences, fewer than 25 percent of American adults have ever been to a living history site. This is a troubling statistic,

More Living History Sites Can’t get enough “back in the day” travel? Here are more living history attractions within a day’s drive. Museum Village, Monroe, N.Y. MuseumVillage.org; 845-782-8248 The closest living history attraction to Westchester is just across the Hudson River in Orange County. It’s a replicated 19th century village anchored by a village green that includes a schoolhouse, print shop, broom shop, candle shop, blacksmith, livery and drug store. A (rare) complete mastodon skeleton is on display in one of the natural history buildings. Costumed interpreters give presentations and tend the farm animals. Events that are scheduled for this summer include Zerbini Family Circus, gem and mineral show, Carriage Day and a Civil War reenactment. The Farmers’ Museum, Cooperstown, N.Y. FarmersMuseum.org; 888-547-1450 One of the country’s oldest rural life museums, this site includes a working farmstead, a recreated historic village, the Empire State Carousel and a Colonial Revival stone barn listed on the National Register for Historic

Kids (and parents) appreciate all the hands-on entertainment at Mystic Seaport. Places. Visitors experience 19th century village life through demonstrations and interpretive exhibits, with an emphasis on upstate New York architecture and agriculture. This summer’s newest event, Hopsego on Aug. 18, celebrates the local hops crop with music, food, family-friendly activities and more. considering how much there is to learn and experience at these places. Old Sturbridge Old Sturbridge Village is the region’s largest, set on 200 acres, with more than 40 original buildings, including homes, meetinghouses, a district school, country store, bank, working

is located 20 miles southwest of Rochester. There are 68 authentic structures grouped into three periods from 1795 to 1900; with an 1850s telegraph office opening this year. There are multiple historic gardens, including a children’s garden and fruit orchards. Everyday activities are presented, like making maple sugar, harvesting crops, celebrating Yuletide, or playing “base ball” by 1868 rules. Kids Free Week is June 26 through July 1. Other events include the Celtic Faire, Storybook Weekend and National Dog Day. The on-site Nature Center features hiking trails and wildlife habitat. Mystic Seaport, Mystic, Conn. MysticSeaport.org; 888-973-2767 This amazing maritime museum is a 19th-century coastal village complete with general store, school, bank, lighthouse and more. Tall ships and steamboats, including the 1841 Charles W. Morgan, (the last wooden whaleship in the world) line the waterfront, inviting exploration. A highlight for kids is the Children’s Museum with plenty of hands-on exhibits, and the boat-themed playgrounds. This summer, check out The Vikings Begin, an exhibit of helmets, shields, weapons, glass and other artifacts from Sweden.

farm, three water-powered mills and trade shops. The setting brings you back to a rural New England town of the 1830s. The programs and demonstrations, presented by costumed interpreters acting in character, are really entertaining. For example, while we were there, we stopped into the one-room schoolhouse just as the schoolmistress was teaching boys to bow and girls to curtsy to their teacher. She led us through a 1830s spelling lesson, and everyone seated in desks could participate. You could also stop into a trade shop, and watch the blacksmith, potter, or shoemaker at work. Inside the meetinghouse, you can listen to old time ghost stories. We also enjoyed riding the Carryall, a sixrow carriage drawn by Jerry and Jim, 2,000-lb Belgian draught horses. It circles the entire site, and the narrator gives you an overview of the highlights. You can also ride in a stagecoach, or on a boat along the Quinebaug River. It’s

common to see “farmers” walking oxen around the village green, or to run into chickens along the path. These are actual working farms, with sheep, pigs, cows, horses and more. In the spring, you’re sure to see the new baby animals. Another favorite for my 10-year-old daughter and her friend was looking at the toy exhibits in the Child’s World exhibit. Many of the board games, dolls and tea sets looked familiar and fun. A themed outdoor playground has a mini schoolhouse and a pretend oxen-drawn wagon. Just off the Visitor Center, there’s an indoor KidStory space for preschoolers to try on costumes, and play at a farm, country store and hearth kitchen. There are also hands-on displays scattered throughout the grounds where kids can operate simple machines, churn butter, or learn about beekeeping. Old Sturbridge Village is very familyfriendly. There’s plenty of open space for kids to run around in and explore, and several

groomed woodland trails. Strollers are permitted, and some are available to rent. There are kid favorites on the menus at the onsite Oliver Wight Tavern, Bullard Tavern and Village Cafe, but picnicking is also allowed. It’s easy to spend an entire day there; or even two. The Old Sturbridge Inn & Reeder Family Lodges offer comfortable accommodations with complimentary breakfast, an outdoor pool and playground. Packages are available that combine the costs of accommodations and OSV admission. It’s worth planning a visit during one of the special event weeks, like Maple Days, Family Farm Fest, or Redcoats and Rebels. Nature’s Candy: Summer Fruits By Elisa Bremner

F

ruit. It’s the best kind of dessert, wrapped up by nature in a convenient and wholesome package. And summer is the best time to find the sweetest, freshest, seasonal local pickings. So many great fruits are grown right here in the Westchester region; they don’t have to travel thousands of miles, losing quality and nutritional value along the way. With the variety of fruits available now, this is the perfect time to encourage children to try all the colors of the rainbow. Why Eat Fruit? Eating a diet rich in fruits and vegetables daily can help reduce the risk of many leading causes of illness and death, including obesity, heart disease, diabetes and cancer. The USDA suggests that adults eat at least 1½ to 2 cups of fruit per day as part of a healthy eating pattern. For ages 1 to 3, the recommendation is 1 cup per day, rising to 2 cups for teens. In fact, fruit is a useful way to help teens meet their increased caloric needs, while providing essential nutrients at this critical growth stage. With the exceptions of avocado, olives and coconut – which contain fats that are healthful in moderation – fruits are low in fat, sodium and calories. All fruits contain fiber – the broom that sweeps out your digestive tract and a variety of micronutrients. Fruit helps with hydration, too. When your child refuses that lovely clear glass of water, spruce it up with a fruit infusion, or offer a piece of fruit (without the vessel). Made up of up to 92 percent water, fruits can help satisfy our extra hydration needs during the warmer months. Here’s a seasonal timeline of some of the best fruits grown in the area, so you can be sure to find your food at its freshest peak! Apricots While dried apricots are available year round, the season for the fresh type is short and sweet; maybe that’s what makes them so special. Most apricots are imported from warmer climes, starting in May. In New York state, they are often crossed with plums to produce pluots, or plumcots. Apricots are an excellent source of vitamins A and C, and, like most fruits, a good source of potassium and fiber. Cherries Anthocyanins in cherries, the pigments that give them their rich color, may reduce pain

Pick Your Own Fruit Hemlock Hill in Cortlandt Manor, Stone Barns in Pocantico Hills and Hilltop Hanover in Yorktown Heights all offer a chance to get up close and personal with the growing process. Showing your kids where food comes from helps cultivate an appreciation for it. Getting them involved in the picking may be even better. Show your kids that pick-your-own involves more than a trip to the supermarket! Call ahead to find out what’s ripe. Fishkill Farms 9 Fishkill Farm Road, Hopewell Junction fishkillfarms.com 845-897-4377 Strawberries in June, cherries and berries in July, peaches and nectarines late July to August. related to inflammation. Studies suggest that stone fruit like peaches, nectarines, plums and cherries, can help combat obesity. Their size and pit help limit portions. Don’t forget to remove the pit when serving to small children. Strawberries With the average American eating about 8 pounds of these per year, strawberries are certainly popular. A cup of strawberries contains about 160 kilocalories and more than 150 percent of the recommended daily allowance for vitamin C. They’re also a good source of folate, fiber and potassium. Together, these nutrients aid in digestion, boost your immune system and support healthy growth. These fun-size treats also are the only fruit with “seeds” on the outside and technically not a berry at all! Blueberries These little blue powerhouses have been

Cherries in June to early July, blueberries July to August, peaches & plums in August Stuart’s Fruit Farm 62 Granite Springs Road, Granite Springs stuartsfarm.com 914-245-2784 Peaches available mid-August, apples in the fall Wilkens Fruit & Fir Farm 1335 White Hill Road, Yorktown Heights wilkensfarm.com 914-245-5111 Starting mid-August (call to confirm) you can pick your own peaches and nectarines

implicated in everything from heart health to brain function. A variety of powerful antioxidants contribute to its superfood status. Local and plentiful, they are a sweet addition to your fruit platter. Watermelon A tasty follow-up to your summer barbecue, watermelon packs more than 90 percent water and a few other nutrients too. With one third of the daily value for vitamins A and C, watermelon (and other melons) is a great choice for immune function, vision, healthy hair and skin. Potassium in watermelon helps regulate blood pressure by counter-balancing sodium in other foods. Blackberries These berries have plenty of vitamin C and are an excellent source of both kinds of fiber – soluble (protects against heart disease and diabetes) and insoluble (keeps your digestive system humming).

Peaches and Nectarines Whether you prefer fuzzy or smooth, there’s no denying the appeal of these genetically similar fruits. Like other stone fruit, they help with weight management. It seems their polyphenols are prebiotic, improving bacterial conditions in the gut and helping to ward off both weight gain and disease. Raspberries At 8 grams of fiber per cup, raspberries are an excellent choice for keeping you and your children regular. Their convenient size makes them a fabulously fancy dessert alternative for kids of all ages.

Of course, there are some fruits that cannot be grown in the northeast. When the fruit of your dreams is out of season, you can also turn to frozen fruits. In fact, compared to some supermarket offerings with lengthy farm-to-shelf delays, frozen produce may retain more of their important nutrients. Let Them Eat Fruit Some ways to encourage your kids to try the bounty of fruits: • Keep it in sight – make sure washed and cut fruit is always available at eye level in the fridge. • Dip it! Serve chunks of fruit with a tasty dip (try yogurt and peanut butter).

• Make your own flavored yogurt (with no added sugar!) by combining nonfat plain Greek yogurt and chopped fruit. • Pop it on the grill or throw it in a smoothie. • Visit a farm, see how they grow, Pick Your Own (see sidebar). Start your children out with the healthy and delicious habit of eating fruit and they will reap the rewards over a lifetime. It’s a Grand Time to Visit The Grand Market By Rachael Sanderson Benz

L

ooking for some outdoor, Saturday family fun this summer? Then stop by The New Rochelle Downtown BID (Business Improvement District) Grand Market where the entire family can explore, play games, enjoy lunch, free entertainment, and of course, shop! The “Grand Market,” as it is affectionately known, runs every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., June 2 through Oct. 27, on the lawn of the downtown New Rochelle Public Library at 1 Library Plaza. Created by The New Rochelle BID, the nonprofit Grand Market strives to be a wonderful gathering place for families while simultaneously revitalizing the downtown New Rochelle area. “We like to consider ourselves a weekly farmer’s market and family festival,” says Jennifer Furioli, Market Director. “A large part of our mission is not only selling farm-fresh food, but to educate the community on healthy eating and providing enriching, free education and entertainment,” she says. So what can you expect from your visit? Read on! Shop “Vendor-wise, we have all the regular farmer’s market fixings,” says Furioli. These include products such as fresh fruits and vegetables from Migliorelli Farms and R&R Produce; fresh flowers from R&R Produce; jarred honey from Sweet Things and Wild Thyme; grass fed beef and antibiotic free pork and chicken from Farm Eats; fresh bread from Journeyman’s Bakery; pies, cookies, cakes and other sweets from Luscious Dessert Company; spices from Uncle T’s Spices; spirits and cocktail bitters from Dutch’s Spirits; and a collection of handbags, artisanal soaps, soy candles and paper notecards from Artisan NR, to name a few. Play There is something for everyone at the Grand Market. While the adults can browse the many vendors, kids love playing at the toy mini market. “We have three children’s sized farm stands filled with toy fruits, veggies, eggs and breads for the kids to pretend play farmer/shopper,” says Furioli. “It’s our most popular attraction for the kids.” In addition, the Grand Market also has life-sized lawn games that include Jenga, Chess, cornhole and Connect Four. “Kids and adults alike love these games. We love seeing the variety

of ages that play chess,” she says. “It’s not uncommon for two complete strangers to face off in a fun challenge across the chess board.” Explore Together with the New Rochelle Public Library, the Grand Market runs a handson family gardening experience during market hours. “Kids can plant a seedling, harvest fresh peas, clip parsley and more,” says Furioli. While the kids are up to their elbows in dirt, parents can pick the brain of the gardening manager on anything from composting to planting. Entertainment In keeping with family fun, the Grand Market hosts several large festivals throughout the season. These include Bastille Day and Touch-A-Truck Day. Shoppers feel like they are visiting the streets of Paris during the Grand Market’s annual Bastille Day. Entertainment may include French singers, cooking demos by local French chefs, games that revolve around the French culture and language, free beret giveaways, a Petit Prince photo booth and crepes for sale. Touch-A-Truck at the Grand Market pays homage to all types of trucks that help keep New Rochelle going. Coordinated with the

City of New Rochelle, children are invited to get inside and explore the city’s firetrucks, ambulances, street cleaners, police cars, diggers and more. Grab an ice cream from a bona fide ice cream truck and enjoy face painting, crafts for kids, balloons and music. In addition to signature festivals, the Grand Market provides weekly, familyoriented entertainment such as live music, balloon artists, educational crafts, or a teddy bear health clinic run by one of the market’s sponsors – Montefiore New Rochelle. Food With so much to do at the Grand Market, it’s easy to work up an appetite. Grab a chair at a bistro table and enjoy lunch from one of the market’s various food vendors. Options include crepes and galettes from La Maison Bretonne, vegan food such as falafel, hummus, salad bowls and pita wraps from Let them Eat Pita, Caribbean fare from A Place2Go, and hot dogs from the famous Walter’s Hot Dog Truck. For more information on The New Rochelle Downtown BID Grand Market, visit the market’s website at newrochellegrandmarket.com. Rachael Sanderson Benz is a Westchester-based freelance writer.
