aradise just keeps getting better and better. And choosing the venue for your special occasions gets easier and easier, thanks to the Paradise Catering Hall (51 Avenue U, at the corner of West 11th Street; 718-372-4352). Celebrating your special moments here means having the total attention and expertise of the staff focused exclusively on your affair. But more than this, now is a wondrous time to discover or re-discover this exceptional catering hall. After a stunning re-modeling of their the grand ballroom, management recently spared no expense when they completely re-did the facility’s grand lobby as well as the luxuriously appointed bridal suite, now done up with marble and granite accents for a look of timeless elegance. They match the walls of marble and granite in the ballroom — which itself sports one of the largest chandeliers in all of Brooklyn — giving you just a brief inkling into what they have in store for you and your guests. Come and see the grandeur for yourself. But this is only one reason to choose Paradise. Here, they accept only a single function at any one time. There’s no splitting of the resources between two or three or even more affairs. When you book Paradise, you get the skills and expertise of every person there, on scene and behind the scenes to assure that your event runs flawlessly. This sort of ultimate personalized attention starts the very minute you discover Paradise. At this facility, you don’t deal with some salesman. You deal directly with one of the owners, Hercules, or his son, Mike. And why is this so essential? Quite simply, they have a vested interest in making you happy, not just in making a sale. They know their business depends on word-of-mouth recommendations and on the special days yet to come in your life and the lives of your family. Thus, they will do everything in their power to be certain that the affair you have imagined is transformed into reality under the skilled hands of themselves and their staff. That’s the secret of their longevity
and of their success. The lavish party room, which can be made intimate enough for parties of 100, or grand enough to host a spectacular of up to 400, is marked by a central chandelier that will take your breath away. It is the focal point for a magnificent space done up in sophisticated pinks and reds, with mirrored accents that lend a touch of infinity to the already expansive area. The re-done, picture perfect bridal room is large, romantic and very feminine, accommodating up to 15 in easy comfort, with wall-to-wall mirrors. Ideal photographic locales are assured in this world of environments, which also includes an intimate private garden area, a uniquely designed water fountain, as well as a host of fine, white wrought-iron work. Can even Paradise become better? Of course it can. And they proved that when they totally renovated the large lobby area, adding a regal touch to this space, as well. Whether it be the wedding, engagement party or any other affair, plan it at Paradise and the bottom line will put a very big smile on your face. Our service is top flight, with the uniformed staff a longtime part of the Paradise family. These are full-time professionals who know their business; not weekend teens learning the trade. And when it comes to the food, the chefs are world class. Whatever you can find in the cookbooks, they can serve at the table. They offer an added expertise in all manner of ethnic cooking. Add to that everything is cooked from scratch right on the premises to assure the highest in quality control. Don’t you want to celebrate those once-in-alifetime days in Paradise? The catering office is open Tuesday through Sunday, 1 – 9 p.m. Note that the facilities are also available during the weekdays for all types of social meetings and functions. For the further convenience of your guests, Paradise also can provide free valet parking.

wedding checklist It is exciting to get engaged to the man you love — but the minute you do so, you start a countdown that won’t reach zero until you are on your honeymoon. To properly plan, use our handy wedding checklist below:
■■ First, decide on a ceremony and reception site. Make sure right away if it can accommodate all your needs. ■■ Set the date. ■■ Decide on a caterer if catering on-site is unavailable. ■■ Begin shopping for your attire. ■■ Start shopping for attendants’ attires.
the resulting photos will not capture the love you feel if the photographer does not feel it. ■■ Look into wedding-day transportation. Do you want a limo, horse and carriage, limo bus? ■■ Begin drafting your guest list. ■■ Keep it fun — wedding planning is stressful, but not if you’re on the same page and have fun with it.
obligation to invite anyone who might ruin your day. ■■ Compile addresses of guests. Mail savethe-date cards to out-of-town guests. ■■ Search for wedding favors. ■■ Consider honeymoon spots. Call travel agencies for best packages. Keep having fun with the process.
4–6 months out
■■ Decide who will play important roles in your wedding like best man, maid of honor, flower girl, and ring bearer.
6–9 months out
■■ Begin searching for hair and makeup artists.
■■ Discuss the menu with caterer.
■■ Complete the guest list.
■■ If using a wedding consultant, meet and provide her or him with your vision of the wedding day. Remember, that person works for you, not the other way around.
■■ Finalize wedding-day transportation.
■■ Order invitations and other stationery. Think about what “look” and wording you want.
■■ Begin search for wedding bands. ■■ Hire a florist. Again, remember that this person works for you, so make sure you are happy with the florist’s approach. A true pro will help you work out table settings, extra flowers for wedding party members, etc. ■■ Hire a photographer and a videographer. Make sure you like their work, they understand your vision, and that you feel a sense of chemistry with this person, as 8
| Wedding Guide
■■ Book band, musicians, or DJ service. ■■ Purchase wedding bands and engrave a special saying. ■■ Set up your wedding registry. ■■ Purchase accessories, shoes, and undergarments for first fitting. ■■ Ask friends to be key players. Key players are trustworthy pals on whom you can rely for crucial tasks. The key players are not part of the immediate wedding party since they will be busy with photo shoots. ■■ Fine-tune the guest list. Remember, this is your day, not theirs. You are under no
■■ Book wedding-day transportation. ■■ Book hotel for wedding night, if applicable. ■■ Select and order the cake. Be sure to have a topper that represents you and your spouse as a couple. ■■ Continue to compile a list of duties for key players. ■■ Mail hotel and city information to out-oftown guests. ■■ Complete insurance issues, such as coverage for the rings, as needed.

One day out ■■ Double-check that you have packed your clothes and other personal items for the next day. ■■ De-stress your body. Consider deep breathing and other relaxation exercises such as yoga. ■■ Allocate enough time to have fun with out-of-town guests. ■■ Enjoy your rehearsal dinner. ■■ Make time to spend alone with your husband-to-be. 2–4 months out ■■ Get your marriage license application. ■■ Mail out invitations. Hint: make sure to number each invitation, because people often forget to write their name on the response card. Overall tips No matter what kind of wedding you are having, hundreds of years of human experience offers some tried-and-true tips for making sure your big day is the best day it can be. Here are some: • Trust your wedding party and key players. • Laughter is the best beauty tip. A smile goes a long way. • Remember to implement the stress-buster techniques you and your fiance agreed to use. • Always tell your loved one why you love him.
■■ Book time for final fitting.
• Assume that about 20 percent of your guest list will not attend, so invite extras accordingly.
■■ Arrange a rehearsal dinner one or two days before the wedding. Invite wedding party and key players.
• Walk around in your wedding shoes before the big day so that they are properly broken in.
■■ Confirm honeymoon plans.
• Plan a special dinner with your hubbie-tobe without any wedding talk. Just relax and enjoy a night together.
■■ Make checklist of items to bring for the honeymoon. ■■ Finalize receiving line, timeline, and itinerary of the day.
2–3 weeks out ■■ Finalize seating plan. Call guests who have not returned RSVPs. ■■ Have your final fitting. ■■ If you have a gown, pick it up and hang it in a cool, dry place, away from sunlight. ■■ Confirm details with all vendors.

Planning
A year for a
Day How to organize your wedding and still hold onto your sanity
W
eddings require a lot of planning. Couples hosting large weddings or even intimate gatherings can easily be overwhelmed by the amount of planning they must do to make their weddings into events they will remember and cherish forever. Staying organized when planning a wedding is a tall task. It’s wise to expect the unexpected when organizing a wedding in the New York metropolitan area, and the more organized couples can stay, the more fun they can have during the planning process and the better they can handle the unforeseen circumstances that are bound to arise in the months leading up to the wedding:
Create separate filing systems for each aspect of the wedding Rather than maintaining one massive file with information about various elements of the wedding, maintain separate files for each aspect of the wedding. For example, when receiving quotes from prospective florists, keep all florist quotes in a single folder that remains separate from information about other parts of the wedding. Separate filing systems make it easier to find quotes and contracts when you need to, saving you the trouble of digging through pages upon pages of quotes, notes, and other information you store. Maintain a spending spreadsheet Many couples plan weddings on care12
| Wedding Guide
fully constructed budgets. But couples can easily exceed those budgets if they are not routinely monitoring and recording their spending or the spending they are committing to upon signing contracts with vendors. Create a spending spreadsheet that allows you to track how much you have already spent, how much you are committed to spending, and when wedding bills are due. Update the spreadsheet whenever you write a check or sign a new contract, and periodically examine the sheet so you can make sure you are still on track to remain at or under budget. Hire a planner If wedding planning is proving especially overwhelming or if you simply don’t have time to do all the legwork necessary to plan on your own, hire a wedding planner. Wedding planners are invaluable resources who can help couples quickly connect with vendors throughout the New York area who can meet their needs
while staying within their budgets. Planners also can advise couples on ways to save money and which areas of the wedding should not be bargain basement. Couples planning destination weddings should inquire about resort-affiliated wedding planners before choosing a venue to host their ceremonies and guests. Start early The average length of engagement for couples who wed in 2015 was 14.5 months. That means today’s average couples have more than a year to plan their nuptials. By starting their wedding planning early, couples can avoid having to plan everything at the last minute, which can be hectic, nerve-wracking, and unorganized. In addition, starting early affords couples more time to find great deals and stay within their budgets. Staying organized when planning a wedding can make for more enjoyable planning and a happier wedding day.

Banking on your dream
Smart ways to budget your wedding
C
ouples engaged to be married have a lot on their plates as they begin planning their weddings. Whereas tradition once demanded parents of the bride pay for a couple’s wedding, nowadays more and more engaged couples are completely or partially financing their own nuptials. That means prospective brides and grooms must develop wedding budgets that won’t ensure their first act as Mr. and Mrs. is paying down debt. Many couples still receive substantial financial support from their parents to pay for their weddings. An online survey found that, on average, the bride’s parent’s contributed 44 percent of the overall wedding budget in 2015, while couples financed 43 percent (the remaining 13 percent was financed by the groom’s parents and additional sources). Couples who hope to follow that formula or pay for their weddings on their own can heed the following tips to build wedding budgets that won’t break the

bank but will still ensure a day to remember forever. Examine your collective finances Few couples know the details of each other’s finances before getting engaged. While some may still hesitate to share their personal financial information upon getting engaged, an open and honest discussion and examination of each person’s finances is the only way to develop a realistic wedding budget that both partners can live with. Once couples know what they can contribute, they can then consult their parents to determine if their »

mothers and fathers are intending to contribute. Develop a preliminary guest list A preliminary guest list can give couples an idea of how large and expensive their weddings will be. According to the study, the average cost per wedding guest in 2015 was $237. That cost can vary greatly depending on geography and other factors, but couples should keep that figure in mind when drafting their guest lists. If need be, keep costs down by trimming the guest list so it includes only close family members and friends. Don’t count on gifts Many couples justify runaway wedding budgets by telling themselves that they will ultimately get the money back via wedding gifts. Many guests will give financial gifts, but counting on such windfalls is a recipe for accruing debt. Do not build potential wedding gifts into your wedding budget. If you do so and your expectations fall short, you could be facing considerable debt upon returning home from your honeymoon.
Prospective brides and grooms must develop wedding budgets that won’t ensure their first act as Mr. and Mrs. is paying down debt. Gather quotes before choosing where to tie the knot Where couples get married will have a great impact on how much money they will spend on their weddings. For example, the study found that, in 2015, the average wedding in Manhattan cost couples slightly more than $82,000, while the average Alaskan wedding cost just more than $17,000. Venues within the same city can vary greatly with regard to pricing and offerings as well, so couples should give themselves ample time to gather quotes and find an affordable venue they like.
Build extra costs into your budget When determining a budget you can live with, remember to include a little extra for unforeseen costs. Weddings are large undertakings, and it’s reasonable to expect some unforeseen costs to arise. Building such costs into your initial budget will make these unforeseen circumstances that much easier to handle. Budgets can help couples stay on track and avoid debt as they plan their weddings.

Planning
Touched by your presents Building a registry that makes sense for everyone
R
egistries are a wedding tradition, not unlike a couple’s first dance or the best man and maid of honor toasts. But as practical as wedding registries are, many couples approach their registries with a degree of hesitation, fearful that they might appear presumptuous or simply uncertain about what to include on their lists. The following tips can help engaged couples build a registry to relish and utilize for years to come:
your wedding website and include it on your save-the-date cards and invitations.
Establish an online registry Whereas guests once had to visit a couple’s favorite retailers and ask what remained on their registry, online registries now allow well-meaning family members and friends to peruse potential gifts from the comforts of home and ship gifts directly to the couple. Online registries even indicate which items have already been purchased, saving couples the trouble of returning duplicates while reassuring buyers that their gifts are fulfilling a need or want.
Don’t be afraid to list expensive items Few guests will break the bank to buy wedding gifts, but that does not mean couples should avoid including expensive items on their registries. Some couples might feel it’s inappropriate, but it can actually prove practical. Many stores offer couples steep discounts on items they listed on their registries that ultimately were not purchased. If you have your eye on an especially expensive item, include it on your list without worrying about how it may look to your guests, as they will understand when you explain the post-wedding discount you’re eligible for.
Share your registry information clearly Guests need to know where you are registered, so share that information on 18
| Wedding Guide
Register with multiple retailers By registering with more than one retailer, couples can give their guests more options to choose from. Try to include one brick-and-mortar store, ideally one with a national presence, so guests who prefer to shop in-person won’t be forced to buy online.
Don’t limit your registry to expensive items While it’s perfectly acceptable to include expensive items on your registry, remember that variety is the spice of life when adding items to your registry. Include items at a range of price points for guests working with various budgets. Don’t hesitate to include low-cost items, as some guests may enjoy building a wedding gift basket with various affordable items from your registry. Remember that no gift is too obscure Thanks to the internet, just about any item can now be tracked down by ambitious gift givers. If you want to include items that might not be available at run-of-the-mill retailers, choose an online retailer such as Amazon to host one of your registries. Such sites are great places to find specialty items or more obscure offerings that might be out of stock at more traditional retailers. Encourage donations If you are truly hesitant to ask for gifts or you’re tying the knot later in life and already have everything you need, encourage guests to donate to a favorite charity in lieu of making a donation. A wedding registry provides a practical way for well-meaning wedding guests to show their love.

Verrazano has all the essentials for the perfect wedding
E
ven the most ornate of weddings begins with the invitations, and while the bride and groom are the recipients of the gifts, they are also the bearers of presents for all those who have helped in so many ways to make the day a perfect one. Whatever your needs in this area, they will surely be fulfilled to all your expectations at Verrazano Gift and Bridal (1205 86th Street, corner of 12th Avenue; 238-2722). Starting with the invitations, the store offers literally hundreds of styles from which too chose, from bold to the most traditional, elegant to sophisticated. If you can’t find it here, it probably hasn’t been designed. In terms of favors, there is no one to compare. Come and be bedazzled by some 200 different favors culled from around the country and the world. With a price range starting at $1.50 and up, there are more than a few items that will satisfy both the taste and budget of anyone. Armani dolls are irresisible, as are the custom-made bridesmaids and bridal dolls. Choose from prestigious names and fine manufacturers. There is a gamut of delights: from picture frames to crystal bowls. There are a host of items imported direct from the top designers of Italy, from napkin holders to jewelry boxes, frames to salt and pepper shakers. And certainly the low prices include personalization and lovely packaging of the favors. From the shower-signing book to the wishing wells and umbrellas (available for rental or purchase), Verrazano has what you crave. The store is open Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday, 10 a.m.–6 p.m.; until 8 p.m. on Thursday and Friday. Other hours accommodated by appointment.

A
s engaged couples compile their guest lists, many might realize their friends and family are spread out across the country, if not the world. Technology has made it easier than ever before to stay connected to faraway loved ones, and engaged couples no doubt have a handful of guests on their lists who will need lodging when the wedding weekend arrives. Many hotels cater to wedding guests, so finding a hotel should not be too difficult. However, finding the right hotel requires couples to consider a host of factors:
Location Location is arguably the most important consideration when choosing a wedding hotel. Hotels that are close to transportation hubs such as airports or train stations will be a welcome relief to guests who traveled far and wide to make it to your wedding. But hotels located in close proximity to your ceremony and reception sites will also be appreciated, especially come the end of the reception when guests who danced the night away will want to return to the hotel as quickly as possible. If the wedding reception is far from the nearest airport or train station, try to find a hotel close to the reception site so guests don’t feel like they have been traveling all weekend long. Attractions Attractions are another important factor to consider when choosing a hotel for your wedding guests. Brides- and grooms-to-be will be busy throughout the weekend, but wedding guests who arrive in town on Friday for a Saturday ceremony will have lots of free time
on their hands. Unless your wedding weekend is intended to be a weekend retreat for you and your guests, try to find a hotel in a lively neighborhood with plenty of nearby attractions so guests have something to do in the days and hours before the wedding. Cost Many hotels offer discounted rates to wedding guests, so couples should expect to do some negotiating before making a final decision regarding their wedding hotels. Travel is expensive, so if your list includes a lot of out-of-town guests, try to find the most affordable rate without settling for unsightly accommodations. Guests will appreciate the cost savings, and some might be more inclined to attend the wedding if the lodging is a bargain. Transportation Another thing to consider when arranging lodging for out-of-town guests is transportation to and from the wedding. Many hotels offer shuttle service for wedding guests, which can save guests the added expense of renting cars to get around on the da y of the wedding. Couples may need to foot the bill for hotel shuttle service, though some hotels include the service if enough guests book under a certain wedding party. Some hotels even offer airport shuttle service, which can save guests even more money. Couples hosting many out-of-town guests for their weddings should do their best to find a hotel that’s affordable, accommodating and close to their wedding venues.

Advice
Be our Guest!
They’re here for you. Keep them comfortable
W
eddings are special days in couples’ lives. No wedding would be complete without the witnesses, including the happy friends and family members who are anxious to celebrate the special day. While weddings are largely about the couple tying the knot, it’s important the couples do not overlook the comfort of all of the well-wishers at the ceremony and reception. Every effort should be made to ensure guests are comfortable and feel welcomed at the event.
Plan for inclement weather The weather is unpredictable, so establish a backup plan should the weather not cooperate on your big day. Outdoor weddings in warm, sunny locations can get hot quickly, so make sure there is shade available. Ask ushers to hand out sunscreen so guests don’t burn in the sun. If there’s a chance for rain, have umbrellas or a tent available to keep guests dry. 22
| Wedding Guide
Choose a venue that can support your guest list Guest comfort can be compromised if everyone is packed into a reception room that is much too small. Everyone should be able to sit and move around freely. This notion also applies to the dance floor. Be certain guests can dance comfortably and have a good time. Verify basic needs can be met When selecting venues or ceremony sites, investigate whether guests will have an easy time getting to and from the room. Are paths easily accessible for those with mobility issues? Are restrooms located close enough to seating areas so elderly guests won’t have to walk far to use the bathroom? Put yourself in your guests’ shoes and figure out solutions to any potential obstacles that might affect them. Offer welcome drinks and snacks A cocktail hour might be on the
horizon, but guests may arrive with an appetite. Make a few light refreshments available, such as crackers, chips, pretzels, and some soft drinks. Ice-cold water or lemonade can make an outdoor ceremony more comfortable in the heat. Conversely, hot chocolate or coffee warms up a body in chilly weather. Consider ice-breaker games Little games can help guests who have never met get to know one another. Games also may help pass the time until the reception begins. Provide a program of events Clue guests into what will happen and when. This way they can adjust their schedules around the wedding. If photos of the bridal party will take place immediately following the ceremony, mention it on the program. Guests will appreciate knowing what to expect and when to expect it. Provide other creature comforts Stock extra toiletries in the restrooms, and consider making inexpensive sandals available for guests with sore dancing feet. Weddings may focus on the couple tying the knot, but guests play a key role in the festivities as well. Keeping them happy and comfortable is a benefit to all.

How to tame those wedding-day nerves
W
hen couples tie the knot, many changes are in store, many compromises will be made, and many lasting memories will be created. But in the weeks and months before their big days, couples can easily get caught up in the whirlwind of wedding planning, never taking inventory of their feelings until their wedding days have arrived. Come their big days, couples should not be surprised if some nerves set in. A survey from the anxiety self-help resource The Fear Source indicated 71 percent of brides-to-be suffered from some type of nerves during the lead-up to their weddings. Ninety-two percent of brides experienced nerves on the day of the wedding or the evening before, while 66 percent reported that it affected their daily lives prior to their weddings or hampered their performance and enjoyment during the day itself. According to Psych Central, a modern online voice for mental health information, emotional support and advocacy, pre-wedding jitters are common and can be the subconscious telling a person that something needs to be remedied. Wedding nerves do not mean a wedding is doomed; it just means certain issues may need to be worked through. The following are some ways to tame wedding day nerves:
Keep an open dialogue Speak with your future spouse about the things that may be causing your anxiety. Maybe you have doubts on financial choices or where you will be living after the wedding. Communicating openly 24

and honestly is one of the foundations of a strong relationship. Slow down and breathe Wedding planning involves making many decisions, and sometimes couples move at breakneck speeds. Make slowing down a priority. Try to enjoy a quiet dinner with just the two of you. When enjoying peaceful moments, take deep breaths, which can be calming and revitalizing. If need be, consider signing up for a yoga or tai chi class to force you to slow down. Address performance anxiety It’s easy to build up the big day in your mind and hope that everything goes according to plan. But it’s impossible to plan for each and every outcome on your wedding day. Focus on everything that can go right, rather than worrying about what might go wrong. Also, realize that your guests are your friends and family members
who will be forgiving of any hiccups along the way. You’re bound to recover gracefully from any mishaps. Work on confidence Wedding fears may stem from inadequate self-confidence. Give yourself a pep talk and surround yourself with positive people. Keep the worry-warts at arms’ length for the time being. Recruit more help Weddings are huge undertakings, so it’s no surprise that couples sometimes feel overwhelmed. Ask reliable relatives or friends to double-check all of the lastminute details. This way you don’t feel it is all on your shoulders. Wedding-day nerves are to be expected and often have little to do with the decision to get married. Planning such a big event can be nerve-wracking, but there are ways to combat any anxiety that builds up as the big day draws near.

Advice
Don’t forget love Ways to reconnect during wedding planning
W
edding planning can be intense and often requires dedication and many hours of work. Coordinating a wedding often requires that couples make many different decisions and spend a considerable amount of time in the wedding-planning trenches. Couples expend so much energy planning their weddings that it can be easy to lose sight of the bigger picture — namely the relationship that is the basis for the marriage in the first place. But as easy as it can be to get lost in wedding planning, couples can use this time together to connect on a deeper level and learn to work cooperatively. 26
| Wedding Guide
Divide and conquer Separate wedding planning duties so that both of you feel you are contributing equally and no one person gets overly stressed out. Stress can lead to short tempers and arguments. Establish a mutual budget Even the healthiest couple argues over finances from time to time, but budgetary debates should not set a negative tone for wedding planning. Couples should discuss their potential budget before they even begin to plan their weddings, and both partners should do their best to compromise while also understanding where the other person is coming from.
Schedule time for fun Do not let wedding planning be allconsuming. Schedule days that allow you to enjoy yourselves together without having to think about or discuss your pending nuptials. This may include date nights that may have fallen by the wayside since getting engaged or periodic day trips to get away from it all. Explore your mutual hobbies or try something new. Learn to laugh at little things Not every detail will go off without a hitch. How you react as a couple may influence how much you enjoy your wedding. Recognize that certain things will not go your way, but that unforeseen circumstances will not ruin your wedding day, no matter how unpleasant they may seem. Laugh at what cannot be changed and recognize that, in the long run, the details you think are major today may actually prove trivial when you look back on your wedding day in the years to come.

A place for all Mastering your wedding reception seating chart
A
fter the vows have been exchanged and couples have donned their wedding rings, newly married couples and their guests often enjoy some well-deserved fun at the wedding reception. Wedding receptions are all about fun, but couples may find it difficult to plan the reception seating arrangements. Such a task requires a good deal of time, sorting through guest responses, and an intimate knowledge of which personalities will mesh and which will not. But some patience, diplomacy, and even a little help can make the process of planning seating arrangements much easier.
Group related people together This relation does not have to be familial. For example, seat work friends together rather than scattering them at various tables. It’s easier for wedding guests to 28
| Wedding Guide
mingle when they have some common connection. Younger guests are more flexible Recognize that younger guests are less likely to complain about where they are seated than older guests, so you have more wiggle room when arranging their tables. They can be placed at tables closer to the dance floor, near the entertainment, or by the kitchen door, while older guests might want to be closer to the bride and groom and further away from distractions. Seat immediate family members nearby Seat immediate family members closest to the bride and groom. Guests who fall under the acquaintance category as opposed to the family category can be seated further away.
Place friends or party animals near the entertainment Guests who are up for a good party may appreciate being seated close to the dance floor or within arm’s length of the refreshments. Address mobility concerns If a guest is elderly or needs to be close to exits or the restroom, make those accommodations. Embrace the kids’ table Seat young guests together if there are a number of them. Kids will have more fun sitting with one another than with adults or their parents. And seating kids together makes it easier for servers if children will be ordering from a special menu. Expect the unexpected Some seating arrangements may not work out. Be sure the reception site is flexible and can easily put another place setting together if an unexpected guest arrives or if someone needs to be moved to another table. Couples must map out seating arrangements when planning their wedding receptions. Learn to master the techniques and etiquette to make the process easier.

Whitewedding Tips for keeping your gown perfectly spotless before, during, and after your big day
M
any brides walk down the aisle in white gowns, which have long been considered the most traditional choice. Wearing white can be a frightening prospect to some brides, who fear that white clearly shows every blemish or stain. Protecting a white dress so it looks pristine on one’s wedding day takes a little effort, but such efforts are well worth it.
Before the wedding When trying on the gown, be sure that your hands are clean and you are not wearing any makeup. You may want to wear a thin pair of gloves so any oils from your hands are not transferred to the gown. If anyone helps you in and out of the gown, ensure their hands also are clean. Try on the gown sparingly before the wedding, ideally only for fittings. When you are not trying it on, store it in a protective garment bag until it needs to be steamed just prior to the wedding. Some seamstresses or tailors will hold onto the gown until the final alterations are done and then steam out any wrinkles prior to delivery. Wedding day On the day of the wedding, resist the urge to handle the gown early in the day. The gown should be the last thing you put on during wedding day preparations. Wait until just before departing for the service to get fully dressed in your gown. Again, make sure your hands and the hands of any helpers are clean. Ask for help so that the gown can be placed gingerly over your head, avoiding any makeup in the process. Some brides may find it helpful to leave lipstick application for the very last step in getting ready. Should an accident occur, bright lipstick on the white gown can be especially difficult to conceal. Pack an emergency stain-fighting kit to bring along to the ceremony and reception. This way, should a minor stain occur, it can be treated right away. Use sparingly because you will not know just how the cleaning product will react with the gown’s fabric, and overuse may 30
| Wedding Guide
make the stain worse. If possible, test the product on a small swatch of gown fabric prior to use. After the wedding Use caution when removing the gown and then promptly repackage it into its garment bag. After the wedding, take the gown to a professional dry cleaner to have it cleaned and preserved. Then the gown can be used by future generations or simply saved as a keepsake. White gowns are traditional wedding fixtures. Bridesto-be can keep their gowns looking beautiful throughout and after the wedding.

Mr. handsome Wedding advice for the well-groomed groom
W
eddings are a chance for couples tying the knot to be the center of attention. All eyes will be glued to the bride and groom on this special day, which makes it even more important for couples to look their collective best. Brides might garner most of the attention on a couple’s wedding day, but dashing grooms also will get their share of attention. As a result, grooms must be just as diligent as their blushing brides with regard to grooming and appearance on their wedding days. To look pictureperfect, grooms may want to include these grooming tips in their wedding day preparation:
Hair Schedule a haircut with a professional stylist roughly a week before the wedding to get your hair shaped and trimmed. Although trendy hairstyles may show off creativity, keep in mind that photos last forever, and it’s often better to stick with a classic cut. A barber or stylist may suggest styles that best suit your face shape and hair texture. Above all, the haircut should be neat. Resist the urge to wash your hair every day before the wedding. Allow some natural oils to build up and make your hair shine in a healthy way.
Hands Grooms also may want to book a manicure. Keep in mind that salons will do men’s nonpolish manicures and pedicures, and they can be well worth the investment. Photos of entwined hands or close-ups of the ring exchange will have guests zeroing in on your fingers. Have hands look their best with clean, shaped fingernails and trimmed cuticles.
Shaving Shaving is another thing grooms must consider. If you have a beard, make sure it is clean, combed and trimmed. Men who shave the day of their weddings may find their skin is sensitive and irritated, which can lead to redness. Unless your facial hair grows especially fast, shave the evening before. This is a good time to splurge on a professional shave with a straight razor at a barber shop. A hot shave from a professional will produce a close shave with the least amount of irritation when done correctly.
Skin Get plenty of sleep the night prior to the wedding. Being well rested will help reduce puffy eyes, dark circles, and sallow skin. It will also put you in a more positive mood, which can help you enjoy the day even more. The day of the wedding, shower using water and a mild soap. Avoid any skin irritation by patting your face and body dry, rather than rubbing it with the towel. Moisturize your skin to avoid dry patches. Stores sell many moisturizers geared toward men’s needs, often in unscented
32
| Wedding Guide
or more masculine fragrances. Reducing shine is key for wedding day photos. Rely on face and hair products that will not add unnecessary sheen to your skin or hair to avoid making you look greasy. Matte hair waxes and sprays will tame tresses. Also, ask your fianceé to pick you up a package of blotting tissues if you are prone to oily skin. These absorbent, typically rice-paper sheets will remove oil from your face and keep sheen to a minimum. Smile Make sure your teeth have been thoroughly brushed and that you have used a minty mouthwash so you’re primed for that first kiss. Many grooms also opt for whitening treatments prior to the wedding so they have a dazzling smile. On their wedding days, grooms will likely be photographed more than any other time in their lives. That means putting extra effort into personal grooming to look their best.

dresses A
s a New Yorker, you want your wedding dress to reflect your home’s savvy style. Yet, in a city that never sleeps, fashion is constantly evolving. So what trends will fashion-forward, Big-Apple brides boast in 2016? We consulted the experts:
Styles and silhouettes Up-to-date wives-to-be prefer a look that is less traditional and more glamorous. “Brides are starting to steer away from the classic big ballroom gown with lots of ruching,” says New York-based personal shopper and image consultant, Mona Sharaf. “They want form-fitting evening gowns with a lot less embellishment.” Art deco-style dresses that reflect the 1920s and ’30s embody this trend with their geometric beading and seaming, slim and fluid silhouettes, and low-cut backs with a dash of “Great Gatsby” glamour. “Modern brides like a bit of bling and sparkle that’s done in an Old Hollywood rather than a ‘princess-y’ way,” explains designer Rebecca Schoneveld, who opened the Brooklynbased Rebecca Schoneveld Design Studio in 2013. Sleeves and necklines Strapless gowns have long been — and still are — a bridal-boutique staple, but sleeved styles are currently undergoing a renaissance. Flowing bell sleeves are beginning to burgeon, as are cap sleeves, which literally “cap” the shoulder with their width that is wider than a strap but narrower than a short sleeve. And thanks to Kate Middleton’s Alexander McQueen wedding dress, long and lace sleeves are very fashionable. “I love the trend of longer lace sleeves,” says Schoneveld. “Especially for fall and winter weddings.” Schoneveld has also noticed that necklines are rising. In fact, many of her clients want a sheer lace top, which gives a dress an illusion V- or bateau- (boat) neckline. “You still get the flattering fit of a strapless bustier with the illusion neckline,” says Schoneveld. “But with the comfort and design detail of a higher neckline.” Color Wedding dresses used to come in just two shades: white and ivory. But today, colors including blush, very light blue, yellow, and champagne are also marching down the aisle. »

Globetrotters marry in New York and host four receptions

A
ny bride — and groom, for that matter — knows how stressful it can be to plan a wedding ceremony and the ensuing reception. Now, imagine for a minute, having not one, not two, not even three, but four wedding receptions! And now, imagine having multiple wedding receptions — in different countries! That’s what Ethan and Jacinta did after they got married last November. The couple now lives in Los Angeles, but Jacinta grew up in Australia, and Ethan had previously lived in Brooklyn, so the two had friends and relatives not only coast to coast, but all the way on the Gold Coast. The creative lovebirds, who both work in the entertainment industry, met in Los Angeles in 2013. “We caught eyes at the Saturday morning Silverlake Farmers’ Market three weeks after I moved to LA,” recalls Ethan. “I kept seeing her and secretly watching her and eventually watched her walk right by me. About 20 seconds later I decided to try and catch up to her on the sidewalk and the fate of the red lights held her up just long enough for me to walk up and say ‘hi.’ ” Jacinta recalls a mutual stalking: “Basically we stalked each other for about 15 minutes. I thought he was just looking at whatever fruit or vegetable I had in my hand and he thought I was too cool for him in my big sunglasses. Eventually, after we had both separately left the markets, he caught up to me at the traffic lights and said hi. We had a fresh juice together — very LA. Later that evening he took me for a drink at a Chinese-themed bar and the rest is history.” It makes sense that these jet setters got engaged abroad — on a family trip to Belgium, to be exact. As they both walked on a bridge with a majestic view of Bruges, Jacinta turned to Ethan and mentioned that the bridge they were on was her favorite place in the entire city. Little did she know, they were alone on that bridge because he had already told her parents that he was going to propose that very day. Ethan told her that the lake under the bridge was called Minnewater because it was believed that an evil water spirit lived under the bridge, but that the French renamed it Lac d’Amour, or Lake of Love. Then he reached into his pocket and pulled out a 1930s ring and asked Jacinta to be his wife. It went as smoothly as one could hope for … mostly. “I had to wait for 30 or so high school kids who were coming across the bridge to pass before I could ask,” Ethan jokes. Due to their connections to both the States and Australia, the two were torn

about where to get married, until Jacinta’s parents surprised her with a trip to New York. That’s when the two decided to have an intimate ceremony at All Souls Church in the heart of Manhattan, and follow that up with the geographically diverse reception locations. After the New York wedding, the party went to Australian cafe Flinders Lane, and dined at Momofuku Ssam Bar, in the East Village. For this couple, the most difficult aspect of planning the wedding was definitely geography. “In the end we decided to have an intimate wedding ceremony and reception in New York City with only 28 guests followed by three wedding receptions in three different cities. After we decided on those locations everything magically fell into place.” Fortunately, one of the hardest decisions for most brides was made easy for Jacinta — choosing the dress. “My wedding dress was a unique, unbelievable, and incredibly special aspect of our wedding. About a month before our wedding day Ethan’s aunt mailed me his greatgrandmother’s wedding dress that was 103 years old. Neither Ethan nor I had seen the dress before and to my delight it was absolutely beautiful!” says Jacinta. “Not only was it a perfect representation of my personality and style but it fit like a glove! We couldn’t believe that Ethan’s greatgrandmother was the exact size and height as me when she got married 103 years ago. It was such an honor to wear her dress.” Even with all the geographical juggling, everything went off without a hitch, and the two remember their special day fondly. “The most precious memory I will take away from our wedding day was when I was walking down the aisle with my incredible parents to Tom Waits’s ‘I Want You’ on the ukulele, wearing the most perfect dress, and seeing my future husband with the biggest smile on his face and tears in his eyes and knowing with all of my heart that he is the love of my life,” shares Jacinta. She also has some advice for anyone who is planning a wedding: “Best piece of advice I received was to spend your wedding day with your husband or wife. To sit next to each other, hold hands, and experience the day together. It makes it extra special, plus, it is a nerve-wracking day, so it’s nice to have your partner by your side. Also try to get a good night sleep the night before and drink lots of water!”

iblings sometimes compete, sometimes fight, sometimes just plain don’t get along, but it’s not every day that your brother introduces you to your future wife. That’s exactly what happened when Michael’s brother set him up on a blind date with Karin. Karin recalls the date: “I thought he was cute; he talked a lot on the date. I was tired of dating at the time and didn’t have high expectations, but we had a great time.” “I remember getting very uncharacteristically nervous when she first walked into the restaurant,” says Michael about that first meeting. Karin, who works in digital media, and Michael, an attorney who works for a firm that specializes in distressed trading, must’ve hit it off, because the two have been together ever since, and were married last November. Even if they had instant chemistry though, the proposal totally caught Karin off guard. “Michael’s parents have a house in Long Beach Island, New Jersey. We were going down for a summer weekend, which is very typical. On Saturday morning, Mike asked me to help him set up a surprise on the beach for his brother and his boyfriend,” remembers Karin. “I was annoyed I had to wake up early — not a morning person — and barely awake as we dragged chairs and champagne out to the beach for ‘his brother.’ Mike told me to draw a heart in the sand — I can’t believe I still had no idea what was going on at this time — and as I begrudgingly did it, he got down on one knee behind me.” Michael then proposed right then and there, on the beach, as Karin experienced complete shock. When they came back from the beach and walked back inside the family home, Karin was surprised once again. “I saw all of my best friends and family gathered for the surprise. Mike had gotten everyone down for the weekend. We partied all day on a gorgeous sunny day — it was my favorite 52

day ever,” gushes Karin. “Yup, I killed it,” Michael agrees. He may have planned the greatest proposal, but Karin planned the wedding. “Karin really did everything,” he explains. He did have one task, though. “She put me in charge of picking groomsmen ties, which I decided to custom-make — I went and picked out bolts of fabric and then took them to a tie-maker. They ended up looking horrible, so I just had to go buy different ties.” They each found certain aspects of the wedding planning easy. “Picking the venue!” says Karin, about Liberty Warehouse in Brooklyn. “As soon as I saw it, I fell in love and knew I could not be married anywhere else.” Michael says, “Picking the band. Karin reached out to 45 Riots and they said they were available and that we should come down to the Red Lion since they were playing that night. Once we heard them play it was a no brainer.” Both are extremely happy with their choice of reception venue, the Red Hook Winery, in Brooklyn. But honestly, the husband and wife are brimming with wonderful memories of the day they tied the knot. “The day was so special. I love that we had a Polaroid photo booth station where all of our friends could take instant photos, and either keep them to remember the evening or add them to a guest photo booth we had made,” remembers Karin. “Our band was incredible; they totally understood our style and the dance floor was jam-packed all night. People still tell me that it was the best band they had ever seen at a wedding.” “I also really like that we had the rehearsal dinner the night before at the Golden Unicorn, which is a huge dim sum place in Chinatown,” recalls Michael. “We were able to rent out the entire floor; it was really cool.” “It was a gorgeous fall day on the water in Red Hook,” Karin adds. “And the sunset was magical!”

hat is the most common cause of stress during the wedding planning process? That something will go horribly, terribly wrong. Most of the time, this fear is unwarranted. Sometimes, however, it’s not. Fortunately, true love really does conquer all, so when Ashley and Sergio found out that the owner of the venue they had booked for their wedding was facing life in prison for fraud, the two love birds had a new venue booked within a week. Today, the resourceful couple who married on Feb. 28 of this year is blissfully enjoying life as husband and wife, a life that has been a long time in the making. “We met in 2007 through our mutual best friend, who was my maid of honor,” says Ashley. “For years Sergio and I would be at the same parties and events, but it wasn’t until 2013 — at a wedding event for this same friend — that sparks began to fly between us.” “All of those years we were just friends with absolutely no benefits,” adds Sergio. Both say that had they hooked up back then, it may not have worked out. “We both had some growing up to do and a lot to figure out in our personal lives,” explains Ashley. But there is an added benefit to the fact that they were friends first. “I love that we have a history that started before we even knew it.” Even still, Ashely made quite the impression on Sergio. “I do remember seeing Ashley for the first time; she was wearing a blue-aquagreenish dress, with the stitching in black,” he recalls. “We all went to Central Park that day; we were congregating in the Sheep’s Meadow when I saw her. She was dancing and twirling with other friends. I knew that I liked her … being shallow then … she is gorgeous … But we weren’t even on different pages; we were in different books even.” As smitten as he is with Ashley, it only follows that he would plan a special proposal. So on a trip to Ashley’s home state of Colorado, to celebrate Thanksgiving with her family, Sergio recruited her two brothers, Jordan and Forrest, to help him carry out his plan. Little did he know that Nicki Manaj would throw a monkey 54

wrench into the equation. When Sergio surreptitiously asked Ashley if they could go out for breakfast alone on Thanksgiving Day — since it also happened to be his birthday — he hinted that Ashley might want to shower and dress to go out. “I figured since we would come back to cook all day it wouldn’t make sense so I kept my hair in the messy bun that it was in for my sleep,” Ashley remembers. “I put on my red Toms and favorite Nicki Minaj-brand leopard-print sweatpants.” Knowing that he had her two brothers lying in wait to document the occasion, Sergio tried again to get her to change clothes, by suggesting she put on something warmer. “To which I said, ‘we are driving, so it didn’t matter.’ I still have no idea what I would have worn had I known he would propose,” says Ashley. “In the awe of the moment, I had one fleeting second of wishing this was all photographed, at which point Sergio tells me to ‘look over there’ and my brother was there with his camera and a bottle of champagne and my other brother was on the other side of the lake with his camera.” It makes sense that the kind of woman who has the self-confidence of Nicki Manaj wouldn’t be nervous on her wedding day. But her infatuated paramour was. “I thought that I was hyperventilating at some times of day,” shares Sergio. “I don’t think I’ve ever been so nervous in my life before that day.” “She looked stunning, amazing. I cried a bit — there’s pictures,” adds Sergio. “She’s already the most beautiful girl I had ever seen. That day, walking down the aisle, I was mesmerized. 56

Speechless. I was hypnotized by the idea that I was about to marry that gorgeous woman.” And marry they did, at Giando’s on the Water in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. They chose February so that they could use Ashley’s favorite color — red — in combination with the color gold, as the color scheme. And they were also able to incorporate hearts into the decorations, since the wedding was during the same month as Valentine’s Day. The wedding also incorporated each of their backgrounds. The ceremony was based on Jewish tradition to honor Ashley and her family, and included readings in Spanish in recognition of Sergio and his family, who are from Argentina. On the big day they also surprised one another. The groomsmen had custom-made Boca Juniors (an Argentinian soccer team) jerseys with their last names, and the number 28 — the date of the wedding, and there was a Boca Juniors groom’s cake as well. “That was a surprise for me,” says Sergio. “And I sang to her. I never did that before … a surprise for her.” Plus, the bridesmaids got custom-made red Converse sneakers with their last names written on them. When two people love each other so much, following their own hearts is the easy part. “Honestly, the easiest part was trusting ourselves and knowing what we wanted,” says Ashley. “As with all weddings, we got a lot of feedback and opinions from family, friends, and vendors, but we were able to trust our instincts and check in with each other to make sure it was our wedding for us.”

a parting gift
horoscopes CAPRICORN Dec. 22–Jan. 19
Capricorn takes commitment seriously. If she’s going to utter sacred vows and then seal them with “till death do us part,” she’s going to mean it. Cue Capricorn Kate Moss waiting until she was 37 to tie the knot. Your wedding needs to be understated with a VIP twist — Moss’s fashionable affair ended up in the pages of Vogue, after all — and family is big too. Moss and daughter Lila Grace had a private wedding photo shoot while extended family, like longtime friends John Galliano, designed her dress and Mario Testino, who has shooting the model since she was 16, photographed the event.
AQUARIUS Jan. 20–Feb. 18
No shoes for you: you’re getting married barefoot on the beach or in one of your BFF’s fabulous backyards. As the sign of group activity and friendship, your big day will be fun and filled with creative touches that will ensure that your eccentric guest list — from your college buddy you met at Gwar show to your aura-reading bank teller — have a great time. Take Aquarius Jennifer Aniston, who shook up her vows by promising to always make ex-husband Brad Pitt banana milk shakes. Most likely you’re marrying your best friend, so the vibe will be as playful as your union.
PISCES Feb. 19–March 20
You are a dreamer and the sign of fantasy, so your wedding will be “your” idea of a fairytale. You have your own sense style and alternative tastes, so you will likely want creative control over aesthetic aspects like playlist (Cut Copy, Wilco, Tom Waits), food (Ethiopian), and decor (a cool mix of vintage and modern). Your ruling planet is Neptune, so the sea is in your soul. Think about embracing your inner-mermaid with a fish-tail braid, a netted veil, or details dripping in pearls.
ARIES March 21–April 19
Lady Gaga and Mariah Carey: you share a sign with some fiery females, so your wedding should be as big as your personality. It’s got to have some sizzle. 58
| Wedding Guide
Yet not every ram is into large, fabulous affairs. Some may feed their flames by having a quicky City Hall wedding and then blowing the bulk of her wedding wad on an elaborate trip for two to Tahiti, Tasmania, or Tulum Beach … or all three.
TAURUS April 20–May 30
Let us plant a seed, earth sign: try an outdoor wedding. Not backyard barbecue, but one filled with twinkling white lights twisted elegantly into the branches of an old oak tree; large, canopied tents lit by chandeliers; wild flowers; and locally sourced gourmet food. By nature, you tend to be laid back, but a lack of luxury on a bull’s big day may have her seeing red. So be prepared to get a little dirt under your nails while planning, to get what you want — or on your feet at your reception when you kick off your heels and dance!
GEMINI May 21–June 20
Your altar? The mouth of a volcano or in a cage submerged in a shark tank. If you’re going to make this big of a commitment, you’re going to need a shot of adrenaline. Yet, as unorthodox as your ceremony may be, dear twin, expect your duel personality to show face at your reception where sweet, sincere moments will be laced with light puffs of pure fun like your grandma hopping into the DJ booth or a spontaneous food fight.
CANCER June 21–July 22
Admit it: Hallmark ads make you cry and you were wrecked for weeks after watching “The Notebook.” As a crab, you tend to be sentimental, and your wedding will be filled with teary-eyed toasts and details that honor your nearest and dearest. Tradition and family is very important to you, so along with your mother’s engagement ring, that you most likely already have, try wearing her wedding dress as well.
LEO July 23–Aug. 22
Lights, camera, bride! Your wedding will be the biggest event your Facebook newsfeed has ever seen! Leos love the spotlight, so everything
about your wedding will have a “too much” quality: too much food, too much entertainment, too much glamour! But, be forewarned, lovely lion, don’t cross over into “My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding” territory with a dress covered in sparkling, pink LED butterflies. Whittle down the wow-factor just a bit and you’re sure to earn a #chicwedding hash tag when photos of your big day go viral.
VIRGO Aug. 23–Sept. 22
You’re a pragmatic, earthbound lady. You can handle a spreadsheet like a knight with a lance, so you may want to plan your entire wedding all by yourself. But be realistic. You’re a no-fuss gal, but your wedding is the one day it’s completely appropriate to be a princess. So, get your Kate Middleton on and hire some professional help. Let go of some control and it will be as rewarding as the first time you kissed your prince.
LIBRA Sept. 23–Oct. 22
Libra is the sign of beauty and love. Most likely you’ve had a quite a few suitors and the one you’re choosing to marry is pretty special. Honor this by allowing your well-balanced nature to come out by letting your man have some say in the wedding’s design. Even if he makes questionable choices, like wanting to include a Superman reference in the ceremony or a beer pong table during the reception, your innate sense of style and charm will refine these decisions and the ultimate compromise will be elegant.
SCORPIO Oct. 23–Nov. 21
You know exactly what you want. Vera Wang gown, Harry Winston ring, private Etta James performance. You’ve been dreaming about this day since you were a kid and the private, intimate affair is the perfect opportunity to show off your exquisite taste. Show off your creative side in the details: opt for a dress in a color other than white or arrive on horseback. Whatever you choose, your wedding will be breathtaking, memorable, romantic, and picture-worthy.
SAGITTARIUS Nov. 22–Dec. 21
Your wedding? Think: Costa Rica, on the beach, after a day of surfing. Guests? Your family, closest friends … and maybe a few monkeys. As an archer, you’re athletic, adventurous, independent, and a lover of travel. You definitely have the cool-chick vibe down pat — so even if you have a reception in a humdrum banquet hall, you’ll spice up the place with a few aerialists dropping from the ceiling with a plate of hors d’oeuvres.
