Saying Thanks
I
realized one day that keeping up with the pace of family life was taking so much out of me that I was losing focus on what was really important. So something had to change. It turned out changing my perspective played a big part in finding my way back to joy. Instead of looking at my day as a never ending to-do list I started focusing on gratitude instead. The easiest way to start was to acknowledge thanks. One day during the typical morning crunch, when I knew I had to serve breakfast, make lunches and beat the clock to the bus stop – I paused as I passed my daughter’s bedroom. There she was fully dressed and making her bed. “Thanks for making your bed so nicely – and wow, that’s a cute outfit,” I called out. She looked up at me, at first in disbelief, and then she smiled, “Thanks Mom, be right downstairs.” Maybe we shouldn’t have to thank our children for doing what they are expected to do – but what a great way to start the day. After all, if someone thanks you, your boss at work, a cashier at the store, your spouse at the end of a long day, doesn’t that set a tone? So I began looking for things to say thank you for and the more I looked the more I found. Thank you for bringing in the garbage cans. Thanks for getting your homework

is OUTSMARTING A BRAIN INFECTION. While on a family Thanksgiving trip to NYC, Brandon had what was thought to be just a cold. Then he started to lose feeling in his limbs. Doing Good in the Neighborhood The holiday season is upon us and many families choose to get involved in programs and projects that give back to their community. It’s a great way to teach your children the value of volunteering and to keep them grounded in a culture that often stresses excessive consumerism. Share a Talent According to the Corporation for National & Community Service, a new federal study shows that one in four Americans volunteered through an organization and three in five helped their neighbors last year. Often youngsters get involved through a community, religious or extra-curricular program. The Mike Risko Music School in Ossining often gives kids the opportunity to get involved in volunteer projects. “We believe giving back to the community is critical,” says Miriam Risko. Through their band, The Mike Risko Band and the music school, the Riskos and their students have performed at area nursing homes, the Ossining Children’s Center, PTA’s, the Briarcliff Chamber of Commerce and local fundraising events. “It’s a great experience for youngsters and they can also mention their volunteer efforts on their student resume,” says Risko. Explore an Interest As a young summer camper at Muscoot Farm, Xerxes Libsch, now 17 years old, noticed that rain water was washing massive amounts of manure into a nearby stream that led to the public reservoir system. He decided to do something about it.
Libsch reached out to knowledgeable groups such as the EPA and Audubon Society for advice and support in overhauling the farm’s vast gutter and sewer network to redirect two tons of manure each year. In the end, he completed an estimated $60,000 to $70,000 project on a donation basis, including 2,600 volunteer man-hours. Libsch has been awarded the 2016 Gloria Barron Prize for Young Heroes for his efforts. “My vision for the future is having a genuine purpose and doing something that I believe in,” says Libsch. Get Started Now According to Volunteer New York! a volunteer organization based in Tarrytown (volunteernewyork.org), there are many volunteer opportunities open to youngsters in Westchester County. Consult their online search engine to explore causes that accept young volunteers. Consider your child’s interest and match them with a volunteer opportunity. Volunteer New York! cites the following organizations as open to working with volunteers of all ages. • Interest: Medicine The American Diabetes Association (diabetes.org) is committed to preventing and curing diabetes and to improve the lives of all people affected by diabetes. • Interest: History The Bedford Historical Society (bedfordhistoricalsociety.org) is a non-profit, educational organization committed to preserving local history, educating students and interpreting collections for the benefit of residents and visitors.

Let It Snow! Truly a Bar Mitzvah to Remember By Andrea White

ears of planning. Months of practicing. A trip up to the bimah as family and friends watch a child enter adulthood. A bar or bat mitzvah is always a memorable, special time for any family. But having this momentous occasion happen at the same time as an historic blizzard – well, that can only make it even more unforgettable. Making Plans Ken and Liz Hoexter of Scarsdale already had one bar mitzvah under their belt and were eagerly anticipating their son Benjamin’s big day, January 23, 2016. They snatched up the date more than two years ago, despite it being in the dead of winter, because it happened to be Benjamin’s actual 13th birthday. All the preparations had been made and all was going to plan, with no weather concerns to speak of, until the Monday before. Liz Hoexter recalls, “I got this Facebook message from a friend of mine saying here’s a great weather app you should follow, and I’m thinking what is she talking about? And I yelled in from the other room to my husband, ‘Is there a storm coming or something?’” Needless to say, Liz started checking the weather forecast quite frequently – multiple times a day, every day that week. Luckily, most of the guests flying in were arriving a
Winter Celebration Advice The guests are invited and the tables might even be set, but follow these tips from Liz Hoexter if you are planning a winter bar or bat mitzvah. • Make sure the service can be streamed • Look closely at the “force majeure” clause in contracts • Speak to each individual vendor and arrange a snow date (put it in contracts and on invitation) • Get event insurance, especially for December through March parties • Book slightly larger hotel block, just in case • Create a blast email list • If weather is bad, do important moments at party first (candle lighting, speeches, etc.)

day or two early, so there were no worries about flights. But by the end of the week, there were some enormous choices to make. “We had this looming threat of a storm and there were no guarantees because some things were calling for hitting square on our area and some things were saying a couple of inches,” she says. The Hoexters were assured by their synagogue, Westchester Reform Temple in Scarsdale, that the bar mitzvah service could be held on Saturday morning no matter what. That was welcome news for Hoexter, as she didn’t want Benjamin to have to change his Torah portion. Still, at this point, the party was set for Saturday afternoon at Tamarack Country Club in Greenwich, Connecticut (where the Hoexters are members). Friday morning, during what should’ve been a relaxing time

with her 10-year-old daughter at the nail salon, Hoexter instead spent nearly the whole time on the phone. “It wasn’t until we were knee-deep in nail polish that I got a call from my husband saying we need to make some really big decisions and we’ve got to make them right now,” she remembers. The biggest question: change the party date or roll the dice and keep it on Saturday? In the end, the decision was to change the bar mitzvah party to Sunday. Making Changes “I have to say the best way to describe it is turning around a freight train on a dime – literally – because we had so many guests, we had so many different vendors, we had so many things to coordinate,” Hoexter says. The family started with the most important piece of the puzzle – their venue, which was able to accommodate them on Sunday (Hoexter says one plus of booking a country club in winter is there usually isn’t much else going on there!). Once that was settled, they had to make sure the entertainment (the DJ, emcee and dancers) were all OK with the date change. The family didn’t take any chances when it came to the photographers, Sarah Merians Photography & Video Company, located in New York City. “To play it safe, we ended up paying for a hotel room for the photographers to stay in Westchester because we were too nervous,” Hoexter says. (They stayed overnight Friday and Saturday.) Calls also needed to be made to the florist, the bus company that was booked to transport kids from the temple to the party, and of course, to the guests – about 175 of them! After going through this experience, Hoexter

recommends setting up a blast email list in advance, just in case all of the invitees need to be reached quickly. The Big Day Following a day of phone calls, the Hoexters had a Friday night dinner with family and went to services at Westchester Reform Temple (WRT). Then, after some more phone calls that night, the big day arrived, and along with it about 18 inches of snow! Fortunately, the bar mitzvah service went off without a hitch. Benjamin didn’t let the last-minute change of plans affect his performance. “He pulled through with flying colors. He was flawless on the bimah, he was just unbelievably amazing and he just made us so proud,” Hoexter says. And even those who couldn’t make it to the synagogue in the storm were able to watch Benjamin’s big moment. “One of the nice things about our temple is WRT does live streaming of all services,” she says. “When we realized there were some people in the city who couldn’t
make it up for the service that were family, we quickly emailed them a link.” After the service, with no party to go to, Liz let Benjamin have a bunch of friends come back to their house and stay overnight to help him celebrate his birthday. “It was a really busy house. It was like two-and-a-halfday’s-worth of celebrating.” Finally, Sunday came, the roads were clear, and the party got started. The Hoexters say nearly everyone was able to make it to the celebration, and some people who couldn’t have made it on Saturday actually showed up, too! Benjamin’s theme was baseball (he’s a catcher), and his mom tweaked her speech a bit to include a baseball metaphor to describe what they went through, and what they learned. “Sometimes life throws you curveballs and you have to just move with it ... and you know what, things usually work out for the best,” Hoexter reflected. Ken Hoexter also put everything in perspective. “Ben’s performance was flawless. That’s what it’s all about. The party is a

bonus. He spoke to G-d and became a man,” he says. Liz Hoexter knows there was a little bit of luck involved in making the weekend a success – and such a great story to share. She says, “We were beyond lucky that we could literally reorganize everything and everybody for the very next day. I have to say our friends, and our family, and our extended family were so, so incredibly supportive. It still blows me away and it chokes me up to think about it. Unbelievable.” The Hoexters have one more child, their daughter Samantha, who will be turning 13 in 2018. Her bat mitzvah is planned for early December of that year. Liz Hoexter says she’s not worried about the weather, but if Mother Nature does throw the family a curveball, they’ll be more than ready. Andrea White is an Edgemont-based writer. What You Don’t Know

ugar! Americans consume more than ten metric tons of it every year. Soda may appear the obvious culprit – sugary drinks are the main source of added sugar in children’s diets – but yogurt, granola, salad dressing, sports drinks – all of these “healthy” foods
contain added sugar. At last check, sugar was an ingredient in fully 74% of packaged foods. Chronic Conditions As added sugar infiltrates our food supply, children have started developing chronic conditions previously only seen in adults. Adult Onset Diabetes is now called Type 2
Tips for Helping Your Child Avoid the Sugar Trap 1. Be a food label detective. Teach your child to identify sugar in the ingredients list (so many names!) and look for the “added sugar” category on the Nutrition Facts panel. 2. Make smart beverage choices. Water is important to all body processes, so there’s no downside to encouraging it at every meal. If the kids demand flavor, try infusing water with cut fruit or make your own “light” soda by mixing seltzer with a sprinkle of juice. Although it contains its own natural sugar (lactose), milk is also a good choice. 3. Limit processed food, but keep it positive. By choosing mainly whole, unprocessed, plant-based foods, people of all ages can easily limit added sugar and excess calories naturally. 4. Limit screen time. Sugary breakfast cereals are heavily marketed to children, on both television and the internet. While consumer demand has driven soda manufacturers to develop lower sugar beverages, these companies continue to aggressively market their “empty calorie” wares to children in the media. 5. “Treats” should be small and infrequent, and frequently fruits or vegetables.

Diabetes, as the original name no longer fit, and pediatricians now routinely test their young patients’ blood cholesterol. Research has uncovered associations between added sugars and increased cardiovascular disease risk factors among American children at intakes far below current consumption levels. Added sugars have been implicated as contributors to increased caloric intake, obesity and abnormalities of cholesterol and triglycerides. How Much Sugar? The American Heart Association, having analyzed the current research, recommends that children ages 2 to 18 consume ≤25 g (100 cal or ~6 teaspoons) of added sugars per day. To put this in perspective, the average can of soda contains over 40 grams of sugar. Children under 2 should have no added sugar. It makes sense to get kids used to “nature’s candy” (real fruit) from a younger age. The taste for sweet, while inborn, remains adjustable. Consuming lots of unnaturally sweet foods, like candy and soda, primes the taste buds to want more sweet. By gradually weaning your family off of these heavily sweetened foods, you can actually re-train the taste buds to truly appreciate the sweet that comes from nature. By Any Other Name Manufacturers use confusing terms like “all natural organic cane juice” and “fruit juice concentrate” to fool consumers into believing that a product is good for you. Sugar packaged by nature in an apple or carrot is much different than “natural” sugar added to a product packaged by the food industry.
Whole foods contain fiber, which slows down the release of glucose into the bloodstream, and vitamins and minerals that enhance their value to our health. 100% fruit juice, while now approved by the USDA to fulfill some of our daily fruit requirements, still consists mainly of just the fruit’s sugar, and should be limited. The new Nutrition Facts Label, unveiled this past May and mandatory by July 2018, can help you make better choices about sugar. Important information about calories, serving size and servings per container (for those who still think a pint of Ben & Jerry’s is one serving) are in a larger font. We know we have a problem with portion sizes; this makes it more difficult to ignore. Serving sizes will now be more realistic, based on amounts that people actually eat or drink, not what they should be eating. By identifying added sugar, the new label will also make it easier to follow USDA guidelines for limiting it to less than 10% of total daily calories. (see box for an example). Associated Drawbacks While added sugar may fit into an otherwise healthy diet, we know that few children – and possibly even fewer adults – can adhere the recommended limit. The scary truth is that sugary foods actually precipitate

their own cycle of addiction. The instant rush you get from an infusion of cake or ice cream causes your blood sugar to skyrocket. Shortly thereafter, the pancreas responds by pumping insulin into the bloodstream
to make use of this instant fuel supply, leading to a roller-coaster-like dip in blood sugar. This sudden drop makes us feel uncomfortable; we seek another sugary food to get that level back up. MRI scans have shown that food addictions can be as compelling as drug addictions. Rising insulin levels associated with high sugar intake increase fat storage. Apart from the additional calories the sugars “trick” us into eating, our own hormones may start working against us, both via metabolism (insulin) and appetite control (leptin). Dental cavities, strongly correlated with high sugar intake for decades, are no laughing matter. Research has shown that sugar may be the only cause of tooth decay. The World Health Organization recommends we keep our consumption of added sugar down to less than 5% of total calories. Public health officials in the US determined this level was “unrealistic,” although perhaps food policy changes could help save our children’s smiles and their health. In part, to help their event stand out from the crowd and also to make the day extra-special for their child. Here’s an idea that mixes entertainment with a meal – hire a food truck! The sheer difference and excitement of the food truck will resonate with the kids as well as any adults that are partying with you. Hot Dog Mobile cuisine has had a growth spurt as of late. Mansion and Museum The Hudson River Museum’s history is as long and winding as the river it celebrates. Originally housed inside Glenview Mansion in 1876, the museum’s modern counterpart was added in 1969 and is connected via a short passageway that makes time travel seem infinitely more possible. On our visit, my kids loved exploring the Mansion which features restored and period pieces and a giant elaborate dollhouse that can take hours to explore. Here, the old and new is always in striking contrast as are the stunning river views seen from every vantage point. And while the Hudson River Museum is not designed specifically for kids, there is no shortage of spaces and experiences that will make this a treat for families with kids of all ages. permanent mixed-media installation, “Bookstore.” The dazzling exhibit (restored by Tom Burckhardt in 2008) blooms in full scale 3-D affect, showing a life-size replica of a bookstore and offering a small slice of old New York right here in Westchester. Kids can walk through and experience life in old New York and renew their love of reading. While it addresses themes of art and commerce, the exhibit is a longtime favorite, blending two beloved institutions, the Isaac Mendoza Book Company and the Pierpont Morgan Library. Even more exciting in October 2016, the Museum unveiled a completely new installation of a mythical artist’s studio, “FULL STOP” by Tom Burckhardt. Kids can walk through the studio and experience the work of artists such as Jackson Pollock or Jasper Johns’s Savarin coffee can in a completely new way. Equally appealing to families is the hands-on aspect of the museum presented in weekend family art workshops. Held every weekend and also on school holidays from 1 to 4 p.m., kids can engage in a variety of science and art workshops led by capable and friendly junior docents who make sure there are plenty of art supplies and offer thoughtful instruction. The docent program is a wonderful addition to the local community as it trains Yonkers high school students to
The Sky’s the Limit A big draw here is the Andrus Planetarium open year round which easily competes with the city excursions to that other planetarium with its proximity and ease of parking. With a show for every age, there is always a reason to come by and see what’s happening in the night sky. The 12:30 p.m. show is for the younger set and can easily entertain even 2-to 3-year-old’s with One World, One Sky, Big Bird’s Adventure and Tycho the space-traveling astro-dog. The later shows scheduled at 2 and 3:30 p.m. target older children ages 8 and up, offering more in-depth and complex scientific content and a light show called The Sky Tonight, which shows the actual sky on each evening. All shows last 30 minutes. Let’s Play Recently, the museum even added a new play space designed specifically for children ages 4 to 7 offering a doll house, puppetry and other activities that lend themselves to imaginative play and can be accessed from noon to 5 p.m. for free with admission. Easily accessible and rarely, if ever, crowded, the museum is ideal for school-age kids, but can be easily navigated with toddlers and babies in strollers due to wide aisles and spacious rooms. There is also a gift shop on premises with art supplies and Hudson River memorabilia that allows everyone to return home feeling even more connected to the Hudson River. What Is 3D Mammography? By Norman Lee, M.D.
M
ammography is an important medical test for women. Here are the answers to commonly asked questions about mammography and information on 3D Mammography, a new testing method. Q. What is mammography? A. Mammography is an X-ray of the breast used to detect breast cancer at an early stage, when it is easier to treat. Q. Who should have a mammography? A. The American Cancer Society suggests women consider starting annual screening sometime between the ages of 40 to 44 to get a “baseline” mammogram and continue being screened every year until age 54. Women age 55 and up should consult their doctor to establish a screening routine that is appropriate for their health history. Q. What is the difference between 2D and 3D mammography? A. If you have had a mammography in the past, it was probably the traditional method, also called “2D mammography,” which produces digital images of your breasts for viewing by a radiologist. The brightness and contrast of the image can be adjusted and the radiologist can zoom in on specific areas to

help detect small calcifications (deposits of calcium), masses or other possible early signs of cancer. The breast is three-dimensional, made up of blood vessels, milk ducts, fat and ligaments. To better view your breasts, 2D mammography can be supplemented with a revolutionary method called 3D mammography (also known as breast tomosynthesis). With 3D mammography, digital images of thin slices of the breast are taken from different angles. Computer software is used to reconstruct the slices into what is essentially a 3-Dimensional mammogram that can be examined one layer at a time. Q. What are the benefits of 3D mammography? A. Screening for breast cancer with 2D mammography together with 3D mammography has been shown to increase detection of cancer, especially for patients with dense breasts. Q. Are there other types of breast screening exams? A. If a mammogram shows you have dense breast tissue, an ultrasound screening is recommended for a complete evaluation. Screening breast MRI is another effective modality for breast cancer detection that may supplement your mammography.
Q. If I have dense breasts, do I only need an ultrasound? A. No, mammograms are still the primary, most sensitive imaging method for finding breast cancer. Also, comparing your mammogram with a previous year’s exam allows small changes to be noticed. Mammogram is the only approved standalone screening imaging study for the breast. All others are considered adjunct or supplemental studies only. Q. Does insurance cover 3D mammography? A. Some, but not all, insurance companies currently cover 3D mammography. If your insurance does not cover it, facilities can charge for an out-of-pocket cost. Norman Lee, M.D. is a board-certified radiologist with subspecialty fellowship training in breast imaging. He is the medical director of the Phelps Breast Imaging Center, which is designated as a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence by the American College of Radiology’s Commission on Breast Imaging. Both 2D and 3D mammography, as well as breast MRI and breast ultrasound, are available at the Phelps Hospital (366-3440). Mammography (2D and 3D) and breast ultrasound are also available at Phelps Radiology in Croton-on-Hudson (269-1701) and in Dobbs Ferry (269-1991).

Peppermint Dandies Marshmallow Bark By Chelsie Jangord
N
ovember heralds in the start of the holiday season, and with that comes gift-giving and delightful desserts. Make something new this year to serve or give away. Try this easy and festive chocolate bark made with Peppermint Dandies Marshmallows (no high fructose corn syrup, or gelatin) and crushed peppermint candies.
Ingredients 2 cups Peppermint Dandies Marshmallows 1 bag vegan chocolate chips 1 tbsp. coconut oil 1 cup crushed peppermint candies
Stove Top Instructions 1. In a saucepan turned on low heat, combine chocolate chips and coconut oil and stir until fully melted. 2. Spread melted chocolate evenly on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper. 3. Sprinkle on peppermint Dandies and crushed candies. 4. Let harden in the freezer or refrigerator. 5. Break apart in chunks. Microwave Instructions In a microwave safe bowl, combine coconut oil and chocolate chips. In 30 second intervals, melt chocolate in the microwave. Follow directions from instruction number 2 above.
