My Dad

I

was a real daddy’s girl. My mom used to tell the story of how I would stand in my playpen holding onto the railing and do a little wiggle dance when I heard my dad come home. Cute, right? Better yet, I can still remember the feeling. My dad was awesome. To me he was Hercules. There wasn’t anything he couldn’t do. He positively amazed me. Of course, as I got older I realized he was human, but it never affected the supreme place he held in my heart. He’s been gone a long time now, but to me he will always be – my dad. This Father’s Day we asked a local journalist and dad to weigh in on just what it is dads want for Father’s Day – and a tie or a mugare not on the list! Read Seth Leibowitz’s article for some refreshing ideas and get ready to see a happy, surprised look on daddy’s face. And if you are looking for a fun adventure for the day, check out our calendar of events for a comprehensive list of all that June offers – on Father’s Day and every day of the month.

Daddy Dearest This June 18th we celebrate the 107th anniversary of Father’s Day. It all began when Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane, Wash. wanted to honor her dad who had raised her and her five siblings after her mom died in childbirth. The state of Washington celebrated the day in 1910, but it wasn’t until 1972 that President Richard Nixon signed a proclamation making Father’s Day a federal holiday.

Swim Safe According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, some 1,100 children in the United States ages 1 to 19 die each year from drowning. Drowning is the second leading cause of unintentional injury death for this age group. Children need to learn to swim, but parents also need to provide constant supervision when kids are around water.

Go Zoe! Katonah Youngster and Broadway Performer, Zoe Manarel, Stars in an American Girl Film You might recall our cover story from February 2016 when we featured Zoe Manarel, the Katonah 10-year-old who was appearing as Lavender on Broadway in Matilda the Musical. Well, here’s an update. The musical closed and Manarel moved on – to other exciting projects. We spoke to Manarel in May when she was playing Mary Lennox in the Denver Theater’s stage production of The Secret Garden. Before heading off to Denver, the now 11-year-old Zoe debuted in her first film role playing the character Suzie “Z” Wang in the Amazon original special An American Girl Story: Summer Camp, Friends for Life. “Acting in film is very different than stage work,” explains Manarel. “The camera is close and small

You can find out how Manarel and her two co-stars solve the mystery they are embroiled in by using their wits and S.T.E.A.M knowledge on June 9 when the film launches on Amazon Prime Video. Happy Father’s Day Gifts for Dad By Seth Leibowitz

O

n Sunday June 18, dads and father figures around the country celebrate the day dedicated to honoring their important role in the world. As a father of two, I am looking forward to a day of “me time.” However, finding a way to say “thanks” can make any dad feel special. Fortunately, there is a bounty of gift ideas at your fingertips right here in and around Westchester County which can make any father feel like “The World’s Greatest Dad.” Fore! There is nothing more embarrassing than teeing off on the first hole and shanking the ball so poorly you almost decapitate the beer cart girl. Although men rarely ask for help with their golf swing, there’s always room for improvement. GolfTEC in White Plains offers a variety of instruction to help improve one’s golf game. From a swing evaluation using a patented computer program to advice on the proper clubs to use, GolfTEC is a wonderful gift idea for golf season. An evaluation is priced at $90, but Groupon often offers discounted packages so keep your eyes open for offers. GolfTEC, 190 E. Post Road, Suite 201, White Plains. 397-4820. golftec. com. The Beer Connoisseur The craft beer industry has exploded over the last decade giving those who enjoy a frosty beverage plenty of choices. Half Time Beverage in Mamaroneck is a footballfield-sized store offering more than 2,000 different kinds of beers from all over the

14

world. Not sure what variety the dad in your life prefers? Don’t worry, Half Time is offering Father’s Day gift cards and special deals on growlers and crowlers, 32-oz cans filled with any one of the 20 beers they have on tap. The staff is incredibly knowledgeable and will help you serve up a great gift for your hops-loving dad.Half Time, 139 Hoyt Ave., Mamaroneck. 341-1666. halftimebeverage. com. ‘I Was a Bayman Like My Father Was Before … ’ There is something to be said about being out on a boat with friends and simply enjoying the escape from life on the shore. Island Current Fleet has been sending people out on the Long Island Sound for 24 years. The City Island based company offers daytime and evening packages for anyone interested in spending a few hours trolling for striped bass and blues. The owner, Captain Chris, is backed by a crew who provides everything needed (poles, bait, etc.) except food and beverages. Regardless of your experience level, Island Current goes out of their way to make sure everyone has a great time on the water. Packages start at $65 per adult for an open boat trip. Island Current Fleet, 551 City Island Ave., City Island. 417-7557. islandcurrent. com. Time for a MANicure Contrary to popular belief, men do enjoy being pampered every now and then. However, it can be challenging for men to find a place where they’ll feel comfortable getting a facial or manicure. 18/8 Fine Men’s Salon in Mamaroneck is a “salon just for men.” Their services include facials, waxing, hair coloring and even scalp treatments to battle hair loss. 18/8 Fine Men’s Salon, 315

Mamaroneck Ave., Mamaroneck. 559-2188. eighteeneight.com. G.I. Joe Back in the day, boys used to race around the neighborhood with water guns pretending they were saving the world from evil. Crazy Paint in Mohegan Lake offers the chance for dads to play soldier, except with paintball guns. In addition to carrying a full line of guns and accessories, you can book an afternoon for dad and his friends to relive their childhood. Crazy Paint, 1949 E. Main St., Mohegan Lake. 526-0806. crazypaint.net. Lights … Camera … Action … Jonathan H., a father of two from Somers, misses going to the movies. “For Father’s Day, I would love nothing more than to just go and see a movie. I forgot what that’s like!” If you really want to give dad the movie experience he deserves, check out iPic Theaters in Dobbs Ferry. Just opened in May, the eight-screen theatre offers high-end food and drink service to patrons while they watch the latest blockbuster in reclining seats. In addition, the City Perch Kitchen & Bar located onpremises offers pre- or post-film farm-totable meals to go along with the experience. With summer blockbusters arriving soon, dad is sure to appreciate a gift certificate to this ultimate upscale movie experience. iPic, 1 Livingstone Ave., Dobbs Ferry. 348-7002. ipictheaters.com. Hitting the Trails A bike enthusiast from Ardsley, Andy G. says “Endless Trail Bikeworx in Dobbs Ferry serves all your biking needs with incredible customer service. I’d love a gift certificate from there!” The shop is near the Old Croton Aqueduct, giving bikers easy access to the

Rivertowns’ beautiful Hudson vistas. A full day rental package is $35, or hourly at $15 an hour, includes a bike, helmet and full roadside assistance in case you get a flat a few miles away. Endless Trail Bikeworx, 56 Main St., Dobbs Ferry. 674-8567. endlesstrailbw.com. As you can see, there’s a wide assortment of thoughtful gift ideas for dad.

On the other hand, many of the best gifts are free. For example, Doug D. from Cortlandt says, “My wife is due on May 18 so for me, to be a father again is the most I could ask for. Otherwise, taking my kids swimming or fishing would be amazing.” In the end, most dads just want to sleep late and have a care-free day with no responsibilities. So, steer clear of the ties and

sock aisle, and think outside the box this Father’s Day. How to Take Great

s o t o h P n o i t Vaca

By Jennifer Tonetti Spellman

W

ith the warm weather finally here, we can all breathe a giant sigh of relief that summer break and vacation is nearly upon us. With vacation comes the desire to capture our kids in the essence of their childhood years so they can look back on the family fun they had (and you can get some killer shots for frames, grandparents and the annual holiday card!). Here are some tips on how to inject variety into your vacation images.

Jennifer Tonetti Spellman is an in-home family photojournalist and street photography enthusiast. In addition to her in-home photography business, Jennifer also co-founded the online photography school Illuminate Classes. She lives in Westchester with her husband, her two girls and her shelter dog. You can find her work at jennifertonettispellman.com and her school at illuminateclasses.com.

Jennifer Tonetti Spellman

▲ Start at the Beginning As an in-home photojournalist, the “story” of a family is everything to me. Treat your vacation like a storybook with a beginning (shots of the kids packing, loading the car, walking through the airport) a middle (the “meat” of the vacation) and an end (kids wiped out on the plane ride/car ride home). This will make for an awesome album of your family vacation when you return.

Jennifer Tonetti Spellman

▲ Get Out There Early When on a beach/pool vacation, get out there early with the kids (if you have young ones that wake up at the crack of dawn, this shouldn’t be too difficult). You will have free reign of the beach and pool without the crowds, and be gifted with amazing sunrises and sunsets. Keep in mind the two best times of day to shoot are at golden hour in the a.m. (right as the sun rises) and evening when the sun starts to set.

▲ Shoot at All Angles If every shot is a “say cheese” shot, you are just scratching the surface of vacation fun. Amusement park rides? Shoot up. Did they find a snail? Grab a shot of their tiny hand with their newfound friend. The more variety in the angles you shoot, the more compelling your images and the more “real” your vacation will feel when you look back on the photos.

Jennifer Tonetti Spellman

▲ Work the Scene Don’t just take one shot when the kids are engaged in an activity. Walk around them, shoot through things like arcade games, open your eyes to opportunities like reflections in puddles or mirrors that you may normally miss.

Jennifer Tonetti Spellman Jennifer Tonetti Spellman

▲ Back Up! So often on vacation we go for super tight head shots, completely ignoring the entire scene. That said, back up! Get the whole scene. Get the scope of the beach, a small-children-in-a-big-world vibe. These images of the full scene also lend themselves to incredible wall art, so when you get home the images don’t only have to live in an album, but can be blown up as artwork for your walls.

Jennifer Tonetti Spellman

▲ Save the ‘Cheese’ for Your Wine Everyone loves shots of their kids smiling and laughing, but when we tell them to smile, we more times than not get less than authentic results. Look for the small moments in between where you can capture beautiful images of them somewhat unaware and, remember, not everyone has to be perfect with smiles all around.

Jennifer Tonetti Spellman

▲ Get in the Picture One final note, as parents our focus is always on the images of our children, but get in the frame on vacation! Hand the camera off or take a selfie in a different way, such as a reflection shot. Years from now you will be glad you did. June 2017 | WestchesterFamily.com

Let's Go To ... //

When You Go …

Hersheypark and Hershey Park Hotel

Hersheypark 100 Hersheypark Dr. Hershey, Penn. 800-437-7439 Hersheypark.com

Enjoy the Sweetest Vacation Ever! in need of pampering as is the golfing program for those who want to stay active. There’s even a kid camp on premises! Located next to the hotel, Hershey Gardens is an experience not to miss. Hundreds of tropical plants maintain the Butterfly Atrium ecosystem where every year different exotic butterflies make their home here. And the Children’s Garden lets your kids run free – hiding in a wooden hut in the Native American garden, making friends with Maisy the Cow and trying their musical hands on the xylophone.

Take your kids on the sweetest trip of their lives with a visit to Hersheypark By Elina Furman

A

famous person once said, “I never met a chocolate I didn’t like.” While many have placed a visit to Hershey Park, Penn on their family’s bucket list, a visit here really has no expiration date, since there is something to do and experience for families with kids of all ages. Suffice it to say, it won’t take much effort to convince your children to go on the sweetest trip of their lives to Hersheypark. The town of Hershey was literally built by chocolate and still gets much of its support and visitors from the work of iconic founder, famous chocolatier Milton S. Hershey. The park was originally opened in 1907 as an employee perk for factory employees. Today, Hersheypark has expanded substantially to more than 110 acres and 65 attractions. The park boasts every ride imaginable for a range of ages, a water park for hot summer days, ZooAmerica and Hershey’s Chocolate World which is part interactive chocolate museum, part gigantic candy store. The Hotel Hershey Now to the question: Where to stay? Most people opt for one of two options that offer quick access to park grounds with shuttles, making it easy to whisk the kids back and forth to Hersheypark and still get back to your room for a well-timed nap. When choosing

28

Westchester Family | June 2017

between the extravagant Hotel Hershey and the Hershey Lodge, keep in mind that both offer fun activities and plenty for kids to do and experience on premises. There’s also the Camping Resort for thise willing to veer off the beaten path. For our purposes, we chose the Hotel Hershey, a AAA Four Diamond rated resort. With beautiful architecture, fine dining and plenty of diversions for the family, this is hands-down the most luxurious option in town. There are many benefits to staying here including enjoying the enviable hilltop position overlooking Hersheypark and gardens. Guests love the small touches here, from the chocolate bars provided at check-in to the spontaneous candy bar character sightings in the lobby. In the winter, the hotel’s indoor pool is a welcome retreat for the kids, while the summer beckons guests to enjoy the outdoor pool and courtyards. There is also no shortage of restaurants to try out right on premises. The Circular is one of the top restaurants in town, and while a bit too formal for the kids for dinner, its scrumptious breakfast buffet was a favorite with the kids every morning with towers of Belgian waffles, chocolate chip pancakes and gourmet a la carte offerings for the adults. For more casual but equally delicious options, there is the Harvest Restaurant and Italian dining at Trevi 5. Finally, a deluxe spa including indulgent chocolate massages are perfect for adults

Hersheypark Now it’s time to enjoy the sweet thrill of Hersheypark, one of the most popular theme parks in the country. The kids will be happy to see so many rides on offer with manageable lines for the impatient set. For the chronically impatient, ask about the Sweet Access pass, which provides unlimited front-of-ride access and a personal concierge to take you around the park. While there are many rules, restrictions and age requirements at the park, they are designed to keep the whole family safe with age guidelines posted on each ride with whimsical candy bar categories. The park itself offers more than 65 rides and attractions, 11 roller coasters, 25 kiddie rides including water and dry rides, and nine water-based attractions, which makes spending a day here perfect for the summer or the cooler months. The park is large but not overwhelming, making it a good choice for parents with little ones in strollers. To make your destination even easier to navigate, download the Hersheypark app that will serve as your personal guide. Special Needs //

Creating a Secure Financial Future for Children with Special Needs By Judith Frost

I

f you have a child with special needs, no doubt you have concerns about how to provide for your child as he or she grows up and you age. It makes a great deal of sense to devote time sooner, rather than later, to evaluating your options, developing a plan and seeing it is implemented. Options In considering how you set aside funds to help make life easier for your child, you should begin by performing a cost-benefit analysis of each of your options. Different vehicles may be used, but the question generally comes down to the pros and cons of (1) the special needs child’s capacity for managing assets, (2) the involvement of a sibling or other family member, and (3) protection against the loss of government benefits. If the child is likely capable of managing his or her own assets, then a direct gift or bequest is an option. This is certainly the simplest and least expensive plan to put into place. It does not require the participation of a sibling; and such participation may be a burden to the sibling. It does, however, put the child at risk for losing valuable federal and state benefits. The special needs child’s assets and income may disqualify him or her from receiving benefits, once he or she is no long a minor, given that eligibility is based directly on those. If the child is not capable of managing his or her own assets, parents often choose between providing for the special needs child via a sibling or establishing a special needs trust. While direct gifts to the sibling are, as previously mentioned, a less expensive option than establishing a trust, amounts gifted to the sibling may be at risk if that person faces divorce or litigation. To protect against this unwanted outcome, parents often choose to establish a trust. Establishing a Trust The process for establishing a special needs trust is relatively straightforward. An estate planning attorney with expertise in special needs trusts will help the grantor (the parents or grandparents) establish the trust for the benefit of the person with special needs.

30

Westchester Family | June 2017

The grantor designates an independent trustee to carry out the provisions of the trust. The grantor establishes the trust with a gift (which reduces the grantors estate tax liability by removing the assets from the grantors estate) or with a bequest (which earmarks certain assets for the benefit of the special needs child but does not remove the assets from the estate, and therefore does not reduce the estate tax liability). The trust may then be funded with a variety of assets, including equities, real property, IRAs and life insurance, to name a few. Typically, special needs trusts are funded with liquid assets to facilitate cash payments to address the beneficiary’s needs. Distribution of assets can be made to healthcare and other specifically-approved goods/services providers (a fairly broad list) without giving income directly to the special needs child. A special needs trust may be a very useful part of the overall financial plan of those who wish to provide for the special needs child, and should be considered within the context of providing for all heirs in a way that makes sense for the family. Another Option A recent development and potentially very functional supplement to special needs trusts – or an alternative to them for smaller

account balances – is the creation of ABLE accounts. These are tax-advantaged savings accounts for individuals with disabilities and their families. Eligibility is limited to individuals with significant disabilities whose onset was before the child’s turning 26 years of age and contributions are limited to $14,000 by all participants (family and friends) per tax year. For information on services and support for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families, thearc.org is a helpful website. To review details on government benefits, see the Social Security Administration’s publication, “Benefits for Children with Disabilities” on their website ssa.gov/pubs/ EN-05-10026.pdf. Broadway Scene //

Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory By George A. Wachtel

W

ith the Tony Awards® broadcast on Sunday, June 11, Broadway shows fall over one another to open as close as possible to the April 27 qualifying date. That way, when the 51 Tony Nominators meet to consider the 45 shows in the 2016-17 season in 24 award categories, they are fresh in their minds. Fourteen shows opened in April alone. New Musicals Among them were several musicals – some, like the witty Ground Hog Day with an energetic score by Tim Minchin (Roald Dahl’s Matilda) were memorable, while others, such as the ill-conceived (already closed) Amelie, forgettable. Somewhere inbetween was another Roald Dahl creation, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Certainly, the most expensive and eye popping, Charlie is one of two musicals aimed at family theatregoers. (We will review the other – Anastasia –next month.) Charlie stars the estimable Christian Borle, who – when he finally lets loose in the second act – is the archetype of a Broadway song and dance man (think the late Peter Allen or the very alive Hugh Jackman). Coming off a similar starturn in Something Rotten! many would pay just to see him perform. The Story For those of you not familiar with the 1964 novel or the popular 1971 film Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, the story revolves around an eccentric maker of chocolate (Willy Wonka) who has been out of the public eye for years and is now looking for an heir to take over his chocolate empire. Through a contest where golden tickets are hidden inside Wonka chocolate bars, five contestants emerge including Charlie Bucket (I saw Ryan Foust, one of three actors alternating the part), a sweet youngster with a strong moral compass. It takes of all of act one, however, to get to the point where Charlie is ready to pass through the gates of this strange chocolate kingdom. From there on theatrical fireworks take hold, but it may be tough for the very youngest to patiently get to that point. Big Finish Act two is where the huge sums Warner Bros. Theatre Ventures is reputed to have spent becomes apparent. Magical special effects

fill the stage. I frankly could not see how the glass booth levitated with Charlie and Willy Wonka inside. By then, each of the other four contestants have met their nefarious, sometimes, queasy, end. Each of these other four youngsters is played by young, by not child, actors, which puts a special light on Charlie. Among the four is Emma Pfaeffle, who as the spoiled daddy’s girl, Varuca, is a delightful Russian prima donna ballerina. Jackie Hoffman’s comedic talent shines as the mother of Mike Teavee, the fourth and most “TV” addicted contestant. Four songs carry over from the 1971 movie including “The Candy Man” and “Pure Imagination.” The rest of the score, by the talented team of Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman (Hairspray, Smash), is not on the same level. On the other hand, Joshua Bergesse’s choreography with Basil Twist’s Oompa Loompa puppets is quite charming. (You may recall that the Oompa Loompas are Wonka’s factory workers.)

In all, this version of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is a flawed production. That said, the familiar story and unique stagecraft, especially in the second act, will appeal to children of all ages. Adults can revel in the performance of Christine Borle who, on several occasions, brings Willy Wonka and the entire show to life. George A. Wachtel is president of Audience Research & Analysis, A New York City-based market research firm specializing in arts and entertainment.

The Ultimate Summer Camp Packing Checklist By Jess Michaels

T

he countdown to camp is fast approaching and it’s time to start packing for overnight camp. The American Camp Association, New York and New Jersey recommends parents follow the suggested guidelines below when packing for camp. Parents should check the camp’s packing list for specifics on what is needed, as well as items that should be left at home. Consider shopping and packing for items with your child. It can help your child feel more secure if they know what they are taking to camp and you can use the time together to discuss camp and what to expect. Headgear/Eyewear. Pack items to protect your child’s head and eyes from the sun and other elements. ❑ Baseball caps or a sunhat ❑ Sunglasses ❑ Swimming goggles ❑ Eye glasses/contacts (an extra pair, cleaning solution) Clothing. Keep it simple. ❑ T-shirts ❑ Swimsuits, check the camp’s policy on one piece/two-piece suits ❑ Swim trunks ❑ Jacket ❑ Sweatshirts ❑ Sweatpants/leggings ❑ Jeans ❑ Dress clothes for socials ❑ Raincoat or poncho ❑ Long pants ❑ Long sleeve shirts ❑ Sleepwear ❑ Lightweight robe ❑ Socks (plenty) ❑ Underwear Footwear. Appropriate footwear is one of the most important items to pack for children at camp, especially when they are hiking and running. Remember that shoes should be broken in prior to the start of camp. ❑ Sneakers/tennis shoes ❑ Water shoes ❑ Rain boots ❑ Dress shoes, if the camp requires them Bed and Bath Needs. For children attending a resident camp, parents should remember to pack the home basics. ❑ Towels

50

Westchester Family | June 2017

❑ Bedding/sleeping bag ❑ Pillows ❑ Laundry bag, if needed ❑ Bathroom/shower kits are essential ❑ Brush and comb ❑ Shampoo ❑ Soap and soap container ❑ Toothbrush and holder ❑ Toothpaste ❑ Deodorant ❑ Nail clippers ❑ Insect repellent ❑ Feminine products ❑ Sunscreen/sun block ❑ Shaving gear ❑ Lip balm, with sun block in it Makeup/Hairdryer. Check the camp packing list. Some camps don’t allow certain

items so campers focus on activities and making friends instead of their appearance. Additional Items. Pack some additional items including books and magazines, flashlights and batteries, Frisbees, disposable camera for taking pictures, a reusable water bottle, a journal and writing materials, writing paper, preaddressed, pre-stamped envelopes, an umbrella. When considering electronics, check with the camp about policies. Most summer camps don’t allow cell phones and tablets, so please respect the camp rules and leave those items at home.
