It’s a Gift
C
an it be that a full year has passed already? Your children have spanned two grades in school, you’ve celebrated birthdays and done more washing up than you care to remember. No doubt, family life can be hectic, but as you are running around silly this month take a tiny breath and know that this is really a gift. You are making amazing, funny, crazy memories that you will revisit for years to come. Like the time my 3-year-old decided to play hide and seek under the holiday dress display at Bloomingdales. Let’s just say she was very good at hiding. Or the time I was hosting the holiday and got the turkey in the oven just fine – if only I had turned it on! We had turkey for dessert that year – and jokes about it every year since. Or the year my daughter loosely gift wrapped her favorite stuffed animals and put them under the tree for her dad and me – priceless. Talking about gifts – it is that time of year. Thankfully NAPPA (National Parenting Products Awards) has come to the rescue with brilliant suggestions on the best gifts for every kid on your list – from baby on up. These products have been reviewed by NAPPA’s distinguished team of judges – with the help of expert child testers – and have made the cut as some of the best gifts for the holiday season. Some families look forward to winter sports over the holidays. If you are, read Elina Furman’s article on Whiteface Lodge in Lake Placid. It’s made for families looking for

comfort and tons of old-world holiday fun. The holidays also call for caution. This month we have included tips for safe online and in-store shopping and have asked Joseph Turkowski, M.D., Chief of Burn Surgery at Westchester Medical Center, for suggestions for avoiding burns (think hot drinks and simmering pots on the stove) and what to do if the worst happens. And finally, know that some children, especially those with autism, can be overwhelmed by all the sensory overload of the December celebrations. Ann-Marie Sabrsula, M.A., VB/ABA Education Coordinator for Arc of Westchester’s Children’s School for Early Development has provided tips on how to create a comfortable environment for all kids. Here’s hoping you enjoy your end of year festivities! Happy Holidays, Jean Sheff Co-Publisher, Editor

Bits & Pieces // Fast Facts and Timely Tips
Lyme Disease
Risk Remains High in Fall and Winter “Many people mistakenly believe that tick season ends at Labor Day, but in fact the danger of tick bites extends well into the fall and even the winter if the weather stays warm,” says Debra Adler-Klein, M.D., who practices at the NewYorkPresbyterian Medical Group Westchester Scarsdale location. “Last winter, for the first time since I began treating Lyme disease in the 1980s, I saw new cases of Lyme all winter, even in January and February. We won’t get the final numbers until later, but this year is shaping up to be one of the worst in recent memory for Lyme disease and other tick-borne infectious illnesses.” The best way to prevent Lyme disease is to avoid being bitten by a tick. Here are some prevention strategies: • If you are in grassy or wooded areas with ticks, wear long pants and longsleeved shirts. Tuck long pants into socks and wear shoes, not flip-flops. • When you come indoors do fullbody tick checks on yourself and your children. • Shower within a couple of hours of coming indoors to wash off any ticks. Put your clothing and outerwear in the dryer for 10 minutes. Super-heating will kill ticks. • The Centers for Disease Control recommends mowing your grass regularly. • Do daily tick checks on your pets; they can carry ticks into your home. • Birds can carry ticks, too, so you may want to move bird feeders away from the house and outdoor decks.

Walter’s added food trucks when they decided it was time to take the establishment on the road and now they are expanding again with two new locations.
Hot Diggity Dog! Walter’s Hot Dog stand is a Westchester institution. Since 1919 Walter’s proprietary brand of hot dogs have fed families from the quirky pagoda-styled building with outdoor seating at 937 Palmer Avenue in Mamaroneck. Walter’s has expanded in the past, adding two food trucks in recent years, but now they are really spreading their wings. Walter’s has opened a second location
– a small pagoda-styled building at 200 Commons Park South in Stamford, Conn. As in Mamaroneck, service here is walk-up and patrons can eat their meal in the park setting. Walter’s also has plans to expand further. They are to open a storefront in White Plains in early 2018. The food will be the same, but this location will feature indoor dining. All good news for hot dog aficionados. waltershotdogs.com.

4 Ways to Create a Sensory-Friendly Holiday The holidays can be stressful and over-stimulating for anyone, but particularly so for children with autism. Here are four tips and strategies that may help lessen your child’s anxiety and increase your family’s enjoyment during the most wonderful time of the year. Be sure to follow your child’s cues, as every child is different.
Plan Your Decorations Put up your decorations in gradual stages, instead of all at once. To gauge how your child may react to flashing lights or musical décor, expose them to these items in a store or at a friend’s house first before showcasing them in your home. When it comes to deciding on a real or artificial Christmas tree, have your child interact with these items before they are in your house to see how they respond.
12
Stick to the Schedule The holidays can throw off the family routine, but try to maintain as much consistency as possible while still being fluid. Visual calendars or daily schedules can be a great tool to lay out what will be going on during the holiday break so your child is prepared for what is happening each day. When possible, keeping a consistent schedule of wakeups, bedtimes and mealtimes can ensure your child’s days remain structured.
Westchester Family | December 2017
Shop Smart Shopping this time of year can be overwhelming. The lights, music, decorations and crowds can be unpleasant for a child with sensory processing challenges. If you take your child shopping, allow enough time for them to adapt. If possible, practice by visiting the mall or store before the holiday bustle begins. Be prepared with items such as snacks, noise-cancelling earphones or a preferred toy, and look for stores with “quiet shopping hours” and “sensoryfriendly” Santa programs.
Be Prepared When visiting loved ones, pack a bag full of things your child likes to do (bubbles, blocks, etc.). These items can help keep them engaged and could bridge the social gap with other children. Creating a social story around your family’s holiday traditions is another way to prepare a child for novel or challenging events. Look for those already published online or make one of your own to suit your individual family practices. – Ann-Marie Sabrsula, M.A., VB/ABA Education Coordinator, Arc of Westchester’s Children’s School for Early Development

Ask the Specialist //
Burns: What You Need to Know By Stuart Shinskie
W
hat’s the best way to deal with burns? Prevent them. That’s the advice of Joseph Turkowski, M.D., Chief of Burn Surgery at Westchester Medical Center, flagship of the Westchester Medical Center Medical Network (WMCHealth). “Most burns in younger children occur in the home and are potentially preventable. Many burn accidents occur because kids are curious and they explore their environment,” Turkowski says. Children are often burned by spill hazards such as hot liquids in cups or pots. The simple prevention method in this case is to turn the handles of pots and cups in, so children cannot Joseph Turkowski, easily reach them. M.D., Chief of Burn Surgery at Westchester About 700 Medical Center. children die annually across the nation from burn injuries caused by flames, scalding and electric. Westchester Medical Center, with the only burn center between New York City and the Canadian border in eastern New York State, deals with about 400 cases – about one third of which are children – annually, says Turkowski. “The number of cases is pretty steady despite aggressive efforts we make to educate the public,” he adds. What Do I Do? For parents, the key is understanding when to seek medical attention. Parents may initially underestimate a wound’s severity, Turkowski says, noting that burns can injure nerve endings, and pain and infection risk may have to be managed. “A big burn places a large traumatic burden on the body. There are changes that occur in the body after such an injury. Patients may develop fever, a high heart rate or become dehydrated as skin loses fluid. If not treated, the wound can be damaging to the whole body,” Turkowski says. He offers parents these tips: • Cool the burn as soon as possible, rinsing it with cool (not cold) water. • Remove jewelry, watches, rings and
28
Westchester Family | December 2017
Degrees of Burns • First-degree: The most minor injury, such as sunburn. Skin redness subsides in three to seven days. • Second-degree: These cause blisters, skin loss and pain from exposed nerve endings. The injury heals within two to three weeks and usually doesn’t scar. • Third-degree: A dry and leathery wound, involving all skin layers. Treatment may involve skin grafts, the application of healthy skin from other body areas. Visit http://www.westchestermedicalcenter. com/wmc/trauma-and-burn.aspx
clothing around the burned area. • Administer over-the-counter pain medications for pain relief. • For small burns, topical antimicrobial ointments are recommended. Soothing lotions like aloe can help relieve discomfort. • Drink plenty of electrolyte-containing fluids. • Seek medical treatment when there is
blistering, or skin comes off any area larger than the victim’s palm. Also seek treatment for burns involving the face, hands or joints. Other indications to see a physician include persistent fever or pain not controlled by medications, and spreading redness that extends beyond the burn injury. That may indicate infection. • If unsure about a wound’s severity, go to your child’s pediatrician or visit a nearby emergency department. Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital, also a member of WMCHealth, has a pediatric emergency department and a pediatric burn program. • Avoid home remedies such as butter and toothpaste. They can cause infections. Ice is not a treatment; it constricts blood vessels, and can deepen a burn and cause hypothermia. A burn can happen quickly, and “a parent should not feel guilty,” Turkowski says. “It’s just as traumatic for the parent as it is for the children. We don’t hold the parents responsible; we see children with burns every day.” Stuart Shinskie is senior editor at Westchester Medical Center.

or many families, winter vacation planning always comes down to one big question: to hit the slopes or head to the beach? Fortunately, a stay at Whiteface Lodge, with its gorgeous natural setting, kid-friendly amenities, no-flight-needed proximity to Westchester, and the famous Olympic-worthy skiing at nearby Whiteface Mountain, can help make the decision very easy. Location … Nestled high in the Adirondacks in Lake Placid (home of the 1932 and 1980 Olympics), Whiteface Lodge is one of the top winter escapes rivaling even Aspen and Jackson Hole with its legendary slopes. Skiing, ice skating, a luxurious spa, indoor/outdoor heated pool, bowling and nightly shows are just some of the activities that can keep families busy, morning to night. Arriving at the resort after a five-hour drive, one is immediately transported to a place of serene calm, where scenic expanses of mountains and lakes relegate the screams and crankiness of the back-seat brigade to a thing of the past. The grand resort is large but never feels pretentious. The interiors feature dramatic woodsy décor, and every area is covered in

Each suite was designed with families and groups in mind, with even the smallest Junior Suite offering 500 square feet of comfort with a queen bed in a separate room, a queen sleeper couch for the kids, a jetted tub, washer and dryer, a cast iron fireplace, and a full kitchen. The resort also offers Superior Suites and larger two bedroom configurations for those needing extra room. It’s not hard to imagine spending an entire week here due to all the en-suite comforts available. Each room even offers its own private balcony so guests can stay connected to the great outdoors from the comfort of their rooms. Kids First While the nearby Mirror Lake Inn Resort and Spa caters to the adult set, the Whiteface Lodge prides itself on always putting kids first. There is a complimentary Kamp Kanu program for kids ages 3 to 10 that runs on weekends during the year and seven days a week in the summer (make sure to call the concierge in advance to book). Kamp Kanu
Eats The dining here is also a warm and inviting family affair. Kanu Dining Room is the more formal option set in a soaring wood-beamed space with high ceilings. Parents can drop off the kids at the Sunset Club (the evening kids’ camp) before enjoying their dinner of seafood and steaks, or take them along to enjoy the full kids’ menu. For those wanting a more casual option, the Kanu lounge provides a nice laid-back spot to enjoy flatbread, wood fired pizza menu, salads and burgers. A complimentary breakfast buffet is also a nice way to start the day with plenty of options for even the pickiest palettes. Adult Fare While the kids enjoy the festivities, the adults will want to book themselves a half-day or full-day to enjoy the spa, ranked Top 100 in North America by Condé Nast Traveler. With over 8,000 square feet of rustic elegance, it is a not-to-miss experience with treatments ranging from Whiteface Aroma-Sensory Massage to an Ausable River Stone Massage that both draw inspiration from the natural environment. With all these comforts and amenities, it’s no wonder many guests never feel the need to leave the plush confines of the lodge. Still, many guests will want to venture out for at least a few hours to experience the historic town of Lake Placid with the convenience of a luxury shuttle that will whisk guests free of charge anywhere they want to go. With so many shops and restaurants in town as well as the Lake Placid Olympic Museum, it’s well worth making the excursion to enjoy this quaint village before heading home. 15 Tips for Safe Shopping In-Store and Online By Michael Bruemmer
In-Store Shopping 1. Streamline your wallet. Leave anything you don’t need, such as your Social Security card (you should never carry it in your wallet), your library or wholesale club card and excess credit cards at home. Only take the credit cards you plan to use. 2. Keep the credit card close. Never let the clerk take your credit card out of your sight. The swipe should take place in clear view. 3. Paying with a debit card? Use your free hand or your body to obscure the key pad from the view of others around you. 4. Be aware. Note who’s around you and what you’re saying when you talk on your phone in public. Is someone listening in while you share potentially identifying information such as your home address? 5. Never leave packages, briefcases, purses, luggage, or other types of bags in plain view inside your car. If you must leave something in your car, conceal it in the trunk and place it there before you arrive at the mall parking lot. Thieves have been known to watch parking lots to catch people storing items in their trunks. 6. Don’t sign up for store credit cards at the checkout counter. Take the application home and fill it out in privacy. Completing a credit application in a public place potentially exposes identifying information to prying eyes. No 10 percent discount is worth that risk! 7. Keep an eye on your credit report. Identity theft will show up on your credit report. By monitoring your credit, you stand a better chance of catching fraud quickly and preventing things from getting worse. Online Shopping 1. Never Shop on a public wi-fi connection. Although you may trust the baristas at your local coffee shop, you can’t always trust the person sitting next to you. Hackers can easily tap into Wi-Fi connections at public hot spots to steal your identity information. This can be especially dangerous when you are making purchases with your credit card on unsecured connections. Options: surf at home or set up Internet Tethering between your smartphone and laptop or tablet so that you are always surfing on an encrypted connection. 2. Monitor your accounts. Match your
46
Westchester Family | December 2017
receipts to your statement to make sure they are correct and that there are no fraudulent charges. Keep an eye out for small charges, sometimes that is how crooks test to make sure they have a good card. For convenience, set up credit card account alerts that automatically email or text you every time you make a purchase. It makes detecting fraud a snap. 3. Only shop on trusted websites. Don’t just let the search engine pick the site for you, make sure you are using a trusted and well-known website. Type in the direct web address for the stores you are familiar with, don’t shop on price alone. 4. Read the reviews. When shopping online, read the reviews of the actual seller, if available. While the site may be credited with security, purchasers may have had problems in the past that you want to know about before you buy from them. 5. Look for signs that shopping sites are protecting your data. On the web page where you enter your credit card or other personal information, look for an “s” after http in the Web address of that page and a secured (closed) padlock (https://). Encryption is a security measure that
scrambles data as it travels through the Internet. 6. Keep your web browser updated. The latest versions of the most popular browsers (Firefox, Safari, Internet Explorer) provide another layer of protection with websites that use Extended Validation (EV) Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) Certificates. The address bar turns green and has both https and the closed padlock. Make sure that when your computer is asking you to update your software you don’t ignore the requests. 7. Check your credit report. You can identify signs of possible identity theft if there is inaccurate information on your credit report. Check your credit report at each of the three credit bureaus frequently. You can obtain a free Experian credit report at freecreditreport.com. 8. Get help. You can have someone else keep an eye on your accounts by enrolling in an identity theft protection product. You will be alerted if there is activity such as a new account opened in your name.
