Editor’s Note //
Save This Issue Grab this issue and hold onto it! Our readers tell us that our annual July issue is a must save and we know why – Family Favorites! Sometime during the next year there is a good chance you are going to ask yourself, where should we hold our next birthday party? Where should we enroll the kids for music lessons? And what about an easy family dining spot? Who knows best? Other parents of course, so here’s a word-of-mouth survey that gives you the low-down on what’s tops in Westchester. Thanks to all our readers who voted – we value your opinion and so do our other parent readers. Enjoy reading the 2018 Family Favorite awards feature this month. Because it’s summer we decided to highlight a wonderful, free outdoor location that is perfect for exploring nature. Read what our parent reviewer Stacey Pfeffer says about Lasdon Park Conservancy.

There are plenty great events happening this month – from July 4th firework displays to Heritage Festivals. Our calendar editor Andrea White has combed the county and found the best activities for families – don’t miss the Calendar of Events in this issue. No doubt the heat of summer has you looking to cool off, so give the yummy Watermelon Lemonade recipe from Whole Foods Market a try. You could even help the kids open a Watermelon Lemonade stand – that novelty should catch the eye of potential customers. You won’t be disappointed and it is tons of fun for the kids too!

Congratulations to the DeCrescenzo family! If you voted in the 2018 Family Favorites Contest you were automatically entered to win a fabulous summer vacation to Smugglers’ Notch Resort in Vermont. This year the DeCrescenzo family was selected at random to receive this wonderful prize. They will be enjoying a four-day/four-night family vacation for four at the fabulous Smugglers’ Notch Resort in Vermont. “How exciting!!,” says mom Tara DeCrescenzo when she heard she had won. This isn’t the first year she has voted in the Family Favorites contest, but she is especially pleased she entered it this year. Mom Tara and daughter Taryn look very happy (shown here) and we know they will be smiling extra bright in their Smugglers’ Notch vacation photo. Have a great time!

Bits & Pieces // Fast Facts and Timely Tips
Apple’s New Screen-Time Management Features Your kid may be spending as much as six to nine hours a day immersed in their iPhone. That’s an awful lot of time to surf the web and find themselves on inappropriate sites. Apple has introduced new iOS screentime-management features. Common Sense, a national nonprofit organization recognized for appropriate age recommendations in all media formats, has applauded the move. Founder and CEO, James Steyer says, “The simple management of notifications will reduce distraction and make it easier to remind kids to put their devices down. Protecting downtime — especially sleep — is very important, so expanding the functionality of Do Not Disturb is a positive step. And putting all the information and management tools into a screen-time dashboard gives parents the information and control they want and need.” For further information see apple. com/newsroom.
PBS KIDS® Adaptive Apparel: Now at Zappos! Most kids would love a top emblazoned with dinosaurs, airplanes or rain forest animals. But, if your child happens to have disabilities selecting clothing can be a challenge. Someone has noticed. PBS KIDS® and Zappos Adaptive have teamed up to create a collection that’s fun for kids and easy for parents. Manufactured by 4Ward Clothing, the introductory line consists of eight genderneutral reversible tees and four reversible jogger pants (sizes 18m-6x) in fun and bright colors The tees and pants are all interchangeable, which means there are
Age to Buy Vaping Products Upped to 21 in Westchester Your teen (or preteen) may be buying more than a turkey sandwich at the local deli. Sales of vapping products have filtered down to young and still younger children and parents are concerned. As well they should be – a pod of JUUL contains nicotine that is equivalent to a pack of cigarettes. Nicotine is recognized as a toxic and addictive substance. Because of this the County Board of Legislators voted on June 6, 2018 to raise the age limit for the sale of tobacco and related products from 18 to 21. The legislation takes effect in 60 days. Any move that helps protect our children is a good move.

dozens of possible combinations – so it’s no longer a problem to find a matching shirt. To meet sensory and fit needs the tees and jogger pants have flatlock seaming to reduce irritation caused by seam sensitivity and the tear-away tag is water-soluble to ensure no left over pieces. The tee has a loose neckline with a comfortable opening and the jogger pants have a rib-knit elastic waistband, banded cuffs with comfortable openings and can be worn frontwards, backwards or inside out. Suggested retail price, $26 for tees, $36 for jogger pants. zappos.com/e/adaptive.

Enjoy the grounds and the large sculptures at the Donald M. Kendall Sculpture Gardens in Purchase this summer. Outdoor Sculpture at PepsiCo The creatively landscaped and meticulously maintained gardens on the grounds of the PepsiCo campus house 45 large and important outdoor sculptures by major 20th century artists. Play Days at Jay On Fridays through October, families can pack a picnic and spend the afternoon at the John Jay Homestead. This historic site is the former home of John Jay, the first Chief Justice of the United States. Kids can explore the Discovery Centers and help volunteers collect eggs from the chicken coop. The Education staff also leads hands-on activities. It’s a fun afternoon, from noon to 2 p.m., in a beautiful setting.
Get Some Exercise Visit this old railway 1.2-mile steel cantilever bridge that spans the Hudson River between Poughkeepsie and Highland, N.Y. for great 360-degree views, some good exercise and a sense of adventure. Is Fortnite Safe for Your Kids? By Stacey Pfeffer
O
pen up any newspaper or tune into any news program and there’s considerable coverage of the wildly popular video game, Fortnite: Battle Royale. Created by Epic Games, Fortnite can be played across multiple platforms including computers, gaming consoles and smartphones. While the ages of Fortnite players runs the gamut, step onto any elementary or middle school playground and chances are your kids or their friends have heard of it or are playing it themselves. I had heard rumblings about Fortnite from my 10-year-old son but it wasn’t until my school district sent out an email to parents about it that I became alarmed. Although the game is rated for ages 13 and older, its popularity is trickling down to younger kids and with that trend, my district felt compelled to warn parents of its potential dangers. Fortnite: Battle Royale 101 The game is a survival-action game that combines the strategizing elements of Minecraft and the fast-paced violent action of Call of Duty. Players can duke it out in teams of four against as many as 100 other players. Players create their own arsenal of weapons including guns, grenades and swords. Eventually the playable area shrinks and players are forced into even closer encounters until one player remains and is the winner.
Why it’s Such a Hit with Kids First of all, the game is free and features bright cartoon-like graphics. Epic Games makes their money on special designs such as costumes that the avatars can wear like space suits and dinosaur outfits. Remember when kids used to want the latest Air Jordans? Well now Fortnite character costumes are what the schoolyard set covets. The game also allows players to purchase celebratory dance moves after their character has defeated another player. So while dabbing may have been all the rage last year, having your avatar do the “Fortnite Floss” will earn you cool credibility. Kids love the teamwork aspect of the game, adding a social element to the game. Plus it’s a hit with celebrities such as rap star Drake featured on YouTube playing it, so it’s no surprise that the game is a blockbuster. The All Consuming Power of Fortnite Sari Shaw, a Chappaqua mom of a 10-year-old

Fortnite fan finds the game all consuming. “My son was never a total video game kid. He would always prefer sports or outdoor play to electronics. This game has reversed that. There is literally nothing he would rather do than play. He would forgo sporting events, actual playdates or trips to stay home and play. It is the closest thing to addiction I have seen thus far.” “Each game of Fortnite is fairly short, which means it’s easy for kids to want to play “just one more game” – though that can turn into hours if parents don’t set limits,” warns Sierra Filucci, an Executive Editor at Common Sense Media, a leading nonprofit organization that helps kids navigate the world of media and technology. Parental Concerns about Fortnite “Some concerns about the game are the violence – it’s all about using guns and weapons to kill opponents,” explains Filucci. The email from my school district noted, “the game is trivializing the killing of human beings without any repercussions since there is no bloodshed and defeated enemies simply disappear, normalizing aggressive and violent gun use, and otherwise desensitizing children to violence.” Dora Straus, another Westchester-based mom of two elementary school students agrees. “My biggest concern is that in today’s horrible environment of routine school shootings, we should not be normalizing the use of assault weapons through video games. Killing should not be
made “fun”. Filucci also notes another major concern for parents with the online version – kids can chat with strangers. “Parents should preview the game to make sure they feel the content is appropriate and consider limiting gameplay to just friends or disallowing voice chat.” Because the real-time voice and/or chatting between players is not moderated, kids can be exposed to bad language or even be asked by strangers to divulge personal information. Note that the chat option is not available in the mobile version. Setting Limits is Key Filucci suggests parents set limits with a timer or have an agreed upon number of Fortnite matches per day. For kids playing Fortnite via a gaming console or on a PC, Common Sense Media notes that the chat option can be turned off. For additional details on how to do this, read Common Sense Media’s “Ultimate Guide to Fortnite” available online at commonsensemedia.org. While there are certainly negative aspects of the game, proponents praise the strategic thinking, creativity and forward planning skills that are needed to succeed. The good news is that eventually the Fortnite frenzy will die down. But by then, there will surely be a new video game out that kids love and parents hate. After all, remember Grand Theft Auto? The newly opened Lasdon Park Conservatory in Somers featuring exotic flowers and plants is drawing visitors from all over the county. By Stacey Pfeffer
S
ituated on more than 200 acres in Somers, Lasdon Park offers a beautiful backdrop for a family picnic or a walk along the colorful gardens blooming with flowers. Summer is the perfect time to visit, although Lasdon offers special events catering to families throughout the year. The newly opened Conservatory featuring exotic flowers and plants is drawing visitors from all over the county and outdoor concerts are planned this summer. Below are highlights from the park that are sure to please the littlest nature lovers to history buff ’tweens. The Dinosaur Garden Delights During our trip to the park, the Dinosaur Garden was a hit. Little ones can see real plants from more than 65 million years ago and look at small-scale dinosaur replicas. If you have a tech-savvy member of your family, be sure to download the free app, Zappar on your phone so you can scan the signs located throughout the garden to find out more about both the dinosaurs and the plants that lived in pre-historic times. Chinese Pavilion & Friendship Garden So maybe you don’t feel like taking a transcontinental flight to China with your kids but you still want to show them some traditional Chinese architecture. Then head on over to the Chinese Pavilion and Friendship Garden located in the western end

of the park. This peaceful area of the park is a perfect spot for a picnic or sky gazing. Tropical Treasures at the Conservatory If your kids are getting too hot or bored, make sure you include a stop at the Conservatory. Opened last year after more than a decade of construction, the 2,500 square foot Conservatory houses botanical exhibits and currently showcases tropical treasures of the rainforest including exotic plants and flowers. Smaller in scale than the Bronx Botanical Garden’s conservatory, little ones can feel at home here and admire the serene waterfalls and lush greenery while listening to the sounds of birds native to the tropical rainforests. Special Events The park plays host to several special events throughout the summer. Be sure to mark your calendar for these upcoming, not-to-bemissed events. • Andes Manta Music Performance: June 22, 7 to 9 p.m. This musical performance includes more than 35 traditional instruments used by the Andes people. From the sounds of an Andean flute to the six-foot long panpipes, the music of Andes Manta is joyful and encourages audience participation. Families get the chance to hear Andean music, which is one of the few authentic prehistoric culture forms to survive for more than 500 years. Plus, dancers don colorful costumes to perform traditional
dances from the region. Fork in the Road food truck offers delicious treats if you forgot to pack a snack or dinner for the kids. Tickets for this event are $10 per person. • Historical & Military Vehicle Show: Aug. 4, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Aug. 5, 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. My children love car shows and the older and bigger the vehicles are, the better. But this vehicle show throws in a bit of history with exhibits showcasing our nation’s conflicts along with military vehicles dating from WWI to Desert Storm. Tickets for this event are $10 per adult and $5 for children under 12. The ticket fee that day also includes admission to the Conservatory. If your kids still haven’t got their history fix, there is also the Westchester Veterans Museum onsite where visitors can view many artifacts from our nation’s conflicts donated by Westchester-based veterans, or stroll along the statues in the Military Walkway known as the Trail of Honor. The statues portray soldiers from every American war, from the Revolutionary War through Desert Storm. Looking Ahead Lasdon Park also plays host to a great Halloween event with a haunted house each October. This year instead of a traditional corn maze Lasdon hopes to build a Halloween-themed challenge course for the kids. The park also hosts a holiday train show that is a big hit with the little ones. Ted Kozlowski, the park manager is planning to have many events and nature-based classes catering to families in the coming months. Stacey Pfeffer is a writer and editor based in Chappaqua.
