Wrap it Up Yes, it’s time to wrap up 2018 and look forward to 2019. It’s hard to believe a full year has passed. But, not so fast there’s plenty to accomplish this month, as any experienced parent knows. And we are here to help wrap it up. Talking about wrapping - yes, it is time for gift giving. Thankfully NAPPA (National Parenting Products Awards) has come to the rescue with brilliant suggestions on the best gifts for every kid on your list. These products have been reviewed by NAPPA’s distinguished team of judges - with the help of expert child testers - and have made the cut as some of the best gifts for the holiday season. For children the holidays are a lot about getting. As parents it’s important to balance all the getting overload with some fromthe-heart giving. While it might be hard to convince a 5 or 7-year-old that giving is better than getting, you can help them experience the joy of giving by participating in some of the family activities we bring to your attention in our feature, “Family

Giving Guide.” Some families enjoy making a tradition of selecting one family giving effort each year. Traditions are certainly what the holidays are about. Yet, as Suzy Scherr tells us in our Last Bite column, you don’t need a holiday to create a tradition. Read her story and recipe for Blizzard Cookies and enjoy creating fun-filled memories by celebrating everyday moments. You’ll probably want to squeeze in some seasonal fun so be sure to read our Let’s Go To … article on SPYSCAPE the new interactive spy museum in New York City as well as other great events and activities that Andrea White has complied in our December Calendar of Events. Here’s hoping you enjoy your end of year celebrations! Happy Holidays, Jean Sheff Co-Publisher, Editor

New PBS Kids Series: Let’s Go Luna! Let’s Go Luna! is a new animated series about a group of three animal friends who traverse the globe with their parents’ circus performance troupe. At each stop, the trio learns about the differences and similarities of their global community with the help of their friend Luna the Moon who shares the language, music and culture of the local region. With a curriculum focused on fostering appreciation for cultural diversity, promoting global stewardship and developing social and civic skills, Let’s Go Luna! is multifaceted and can help parents: • Expose your kids to geography and culture. As the trio travels through cities around the globe the show serves as a learning tool to help preschoolers understand the many countries, faces and cultures that make up the world. • Encourage exploration and curiosity. From celebrating the cacao bean’s importance to Mexico to learning
about the different types of paper and importance of recycling in Tokyo, the show helps children recognize the cultural significance of the things they use and see every day. • Promote global stewardship. Appreciating the planet through conservation and sustainability are important parts of being a world citizen. Let’s Go Luna! shows the importance of regularly taking care of one’s own environment (i.e. water, plants and animals) by demonstrating the interconnection between humans and the natural world. • Help children understand they may have more similarities than differences with those from other cultures. The show emphasizes the importance of encouraging compassion and understanding of different cultures at an early age to promote acceptance and inclusion.
Your Child’s First Phone Many children are hoping to get a cellphone this year as a holiday gift. A few factors to consider when deciding if your own child is ready include: • Is there a real necessity for the phone (i.e. coordinating after-school pickup)? • Does your child understand that activities like calling and using apps on a phone are not always “free”? • Is your child mature enough to respect rules that you set around phone access? • Set the ground rules early so that kids know when and for how long they are allowed to use the phone, and which phone functions they are permitted to use. • Use of the mobile phone should be an
ongoing conversation with kids. Even if you have had a conversation with your child about phone safety, many parents still regularly monitor their child’s phone use. Ting Mobile’s recent survey of 1,500 parents found that the majority of kids get their first phone between the ages of 11 and 14, a small group report getting them as young as 6 or 7. Of course, like anything in parenting, deciding whether or not a child is ready for a phone starts with a conversation. - Andrew Moore-Crispin is Director of Content at Ting Mobile, a mobile phone service that allows customers to pay only for the data and services they use each month with no contracts, overage charges or hidden fees.

Giving The Family
Guide
T
By Jean Sheff
raditionally, the holiday season is marked by thoughts of giving. Yet for many children the focus is on getting. Giving doesn’t come naturally to children, sharing has to be taught. Yet, giving is a behavior that can be cultivated and celebrated. Here are a few ways your family might help others this holiday season and in doing so help yourself to some true holiday cheer. Provide Warmth Since 2001 Westchester resident Genevieve Piturro, founder of the Pajama Program, has been helping children to get a good night’s sleep. Inspired by a little girl in a shelter who admitted she didn’t know what pajamas were, Piturro has been distributing new pajamas and books throughout the country. The nonprofit program works diligently to get new, warm pajamas and books to the children in need. “The January, February and March time period when the weather gets colder is especially important,” says Piturro, making giving pajamas and books or a financial contribution during the holiday season especially timely. And while the organization receives many donations for young kids, Piturro asks us to remember tweens and teens when making our donations. “We serve many older children in Westchester and they would love pajamas and age appropriate books to read. “Pajamas in larger sizes and any Harry Potter book is always welcome,” says Piturro. The Westchester Bank has been proudly supporting the Pajama Program since 2011. Each year they eagerly gather donations. In

addition, this year five bank employees read to The Pajama Program kids at the Abbott House in Irvington. They are also lending a hand with the Dec. 1, 2018 Green Grass Real Estate “A Purposeful Morning at the Movies” event at Bronxville Cinemas in Bronxville. Families are invited to take a pair of new pajamas or new books to donate. The event will feature a free morning of fun activities and a movie. Search Green Grass Real Estate at eventbrite.com for more information and to register. The Pajama Program 114 E. 39th St., New York, N.Y. 212-716-9757 pajamaprogram.org
Goodies that Share Chocolate goodies are one of the pleasures of the holiday season. If you plan on giving sweets as gifts (business or personal) or if you’d like to serve them at your seasonal gathering, consider purchasing Greyston brownies or cookies. You’ll do more than satisfy a sweet tooth. Through open hiring, Greyston creates jobs and provides programs for impoverished individuals and their families to become self-sufficient. Meaning they not only make goodies, but also do good. You can order through their website. Greyston Bakery 104 Alexander St., Yonkers 914-375-1510 greystonbakery.com.
A Full Tummy Believe it or not, Westchester County has 200,000 people who are at risk of hunger or are facing food insecurity. Many of
.
them are children, seniors and the working poor. Food is needed year round, but the holidays are always a great time to give from the heart. Feeding Westchester can use your time, funds or donations of food to help those in need. In fact, families and children are welcome to volunteer. Feeding Westchester is the heart of a network of more than 300 partners who work to source and distribute food, and other resources, to towns across Westchester helping to ensure that none of our neighbors are hungry. The Feeding Westchester website lists what items are most in need and how you can volunteer. Support the 2018 Feed a Family campaign and every $25 you give provides a complete holiday meal for a family struggling with hunger. Some businesses are stepping up to help too. Local Shoprites, Green’s Natural Food Market and Balducci’s Food Lovers Markets are participating in the Feeding Westchester Check-Out Hunger® program that allows customers to donate to the program while they check out. The program runs through Jan. 2, 2019. Feeding Westchester 200 Clearbrook Road, Elmsford 914-923-1100 feedingwestchester.org
Home, Sweet Home There are many families that lack proper beds, tables and chairs or somewhere to keep their clothing. A contribution to the Furniture Warehouse helps provide families and individuals with the essential household furnishings free of charge. You can donate funds, furniture or volunteer your

time to help. Visit their website for donation guidelines. That side table or extra chair in your basement can help make life easier for someone in need. The Gift of Play Many children create elaborate toy wish lists during the holiday season and parents do their best to make their dreams come true. Yet, other children have little chance of getting any gift, never mind a toy. The U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots program collects new unwrapped toys to distribute to needy children. Drop off a toy by Dec. 19 at more than 100 locations in
the county. See website for a complete list of donation sites. Many local businesses are helping out by serving as collection sites and making their own donations. Berger Hardware in Hawthorne, Grand Prix New York in Mt. Kisco and A Game Sport in New Rochelle are just a few of the businesses helping to make every child’s holiday bright. Be Safe All parents want to keep their kids safe, and helping others to stay safe is an important lesson to teach our children. Hope’s Door works to end domestic violence and to empower victims to achieve safety, independence and healing from the trauma of abuse. Your family can help by donating used smartphones and cell phones, put together Children’s Welcome Gift Bags, or contribute your time or a variety of Wish List items that

Our Furry Friends Children are especially drawn to animals and what better way to teach care and compassion than making a donation of funds or items to a local center. Kids might like to shop with you for toys for the animals or other necessary items. Contact the shelters to find out more about their immediate needs. E-cigarettes Some Contain More Nicotine Than Regular Cigarettes, Which Makes Them Highly Addictive – Some Contain Antifreeze! By Stacey Pfeffer
P
erhaps you’ve heard the incessant radio commercials promoting “juuling” as a safer alternative to traditional cigarette smoking but don’t believe the hype, according to Sankaran Krishnan, M.D., M.P.H., a pediatric pulmonologist at Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital affiliated with Boston Children’s Health Physicians and an Associate Professor of Pediatrics at New York Medical College, both in Valhalla. Krishnan also has done extensive research on juuling as the Director of the Children’s Environmental Health Center of the Hudson Valley. Juuling, or vaping as it is also commonly called among teenagers, has reached “an epidemic proportion” according to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). More than 2 million middle and high schoolers were regular users of e-cigarettes last year. While the problem is prevalent across the nation, Westchester County is not immune to this phenomenon and in fact, just this past summer the age to buy any tobacco or smoking products including e-cigarettes in the county was raised from 18 to 21 in part to curb use of these products in minors. However, all of these products are widely available on the Internet without any restrictions. What is Juuling? Parent knowledge about juuling varies and often adults with older children know more about it than parents with younger children. According to Krishnan, it is worthwhile to know about it no matter what age your children are, especially as the statistics show that it is a growing trend and that the age of first use is skewing younger. There are many terms used interchangeably to describe juuling, vaping and/or e-cigarettes, which clinicians refer to as electronic nicotine delivery systems or ENDS, explains Krishnan. ENDS are noncombustible tobacco products meaning that an “e-liquid” is used and heated to create a mist that the user then inhales.

E-liquids may contain nicotine, as well as varying compositions of flavorings, antifreeze and other ingredients. Some e-cigarettes resemble pens, highlighters or USB flash drives thus making them easy to conceal. There are as many as 7,700 flavorings of e-cigarettes in kid-friendly flavors such as watermelon, cotton candy and chocolate. “They are using these flavors to lure kids,” notes Krishnan. Besides the kid-friendly flavor, ENDS have additional appeal to kids as many like to do tricks with them and “ghost their vapor.” With ENDS, users can suck the vapor in and hide it for a while and then release it, which is known as ghosting. YouTube features countless videos of vape tricks such as the French inhale or pink spot ghosting and teens often get bragging rights if they are able to do these. Why Are ENDS So Harmful? There are many chemicals in ENDS and the nicotine content can vary from 0 to 36 ml compared to conventional cigarettes, which have 10 to 30 ml of nicotine. “An ENDs device can contain way more nicotine than a regular cigarette which makes it highly addictive. Nicotine can be a gateway to other addictions to all types of inhaled products like hallucinogens,” warns Krishnan. But it’s not just the nicotine in ENDS that has doctors and parents alarmed. There has to be a solvent with heat to vaporize the e-liquid so other toxic chemicals and carcinogens are found within these products including antifreeze, diacetyl, acetoin and 2,3 pentanedione which linger in the body. Diacetyl is a particularly troublesome chemical used in many of the kid-friendly flavors used in ENDS. This chemical was also previously used in making popcorn and
gives popcorn its distinctive flavor and odor. Inhaling this chemical can cause scarring in the lungs especially in the smallest air passages, which is a condition called popcorn lung. ENDS can cause respiratory illnesses and asthma. Krishnan sometimes sees ENDS users that suddenly have persistent coughs or trouble breathing during exercise. In ENDS users that are severely addicted other health issues can be sleep disturbances, loss of appetite, irritability and even tremors. An additional problem that parents need to be aware of is the pod packaging that e-liquids come in. Very young children have ingested these pods because they look cute and taste good. The National Poison Control Center gets between 200 and 300 calls a month about kids under 5 years of age consuming these pods. As if ENDS weren’t dangerous enough, there are also cases of them exploding causing serious burns. Warning Signs of ENDS Use Although ENDS do not have the typical tobacco smell, the flavoring smell can linger. If your kid is constantly using mints or coughing at night and was typically healthy before, that can be a warning sign. Krishnan believes that parents need to emphasize that ENDS are not safe. He often hears children say it isn’t as bad as regular smoking. “Everyone needs to understand it is not an alternative to smoking. It is addictive and can lead to longer-term addictions. It has harmful effects that can hurt you in the short-term and in the long run,” notes Krishnan. Stacey Pfeffer is an editor and writer based in Chappaqua.

Let’s Go To ... //
SPYSCAPE A New Spy Museum and Experience By Jean Sheff
I
t was raining heavily as my family and I arrived in the city. We were headed to SPYSCAPE, a new spy museum, and the turnyour-collar-up weather was helping us get in the mood. We checked the address twice because 928 8th Avenue looked like a sleek modern office building. Ah, we noted, even the building is undercover. We stashed our weeping umbrellas in plastic umbrella bags that are provided in the outer lobby, and then we were even happier to find lockers in the inner lobby. Tip number one, load everything in these lockers - coats, bags, purses, umbrellas, backpacks - you do not want to be encumbered on this adventure. Check In After you pay admission the helpful staff fits you with a personalized wristband that you will use at the three-sided, interactive kiosks throughout the museum. The bands save data about your response to the personality quizzes, brainteasers and other interactive spy challenges to create your personal
spy profile using a system developed with psychologists and a former Head of Training at British Intelligence. Your brainpower, physical prowess and observation skills will all be tested - in a fun and engaging way. Let’s Get Going Additional staff guides you into the sleek modern interior of the museum dotted with sparkling lights, and done in hip tones of grey, black and steel. The introductory video, or “briefing”, is delivered in a large moving elevator with panoramic projector screens. And then you are off. Families can move at their own pace throughout the exhibits, challenges and kiosk stations. Tip number two, don’t worry about doing the kiosks in order if one is being used (with three sides, three people can use one kiosk at the same time), move on to the next and circle back. No need to keep your kids waiting longer than necessary. My family jumped right in and it was clear within about 10 minutes that this was going to be an awesome day. There was a nice flow to the museum. As we moved from kiosk to kiosk we discovered exhibits about amazing real-life spy stories and impressive
displays of historic encryption devices and other spy memorabilia. Exhibits While the museum focuses on real-life spying there are a few nods to Hollywood that are a nice touch. The adults might be interested to see James Bond’s Aston Martin on display and I got a kick out of the costume Benedict Cumberbatch wore when he portrayed Alan Turing in the 2014 movie, The Imitation Game. There’s a whole room devoted to Turing, the somewhat eccentric cryptologist who changed the course of the Second World War by cracking the Enigma code, a feat that cryptanalysts thought was impossible. The exhibit helps you understand the complexity of the achievement, a view of an actual Enigma, as well as a replica of the machine Turing used to crack the code. Overall the exhibits offer a timeline of espionage and the spies and traitors that have been involved in undercover operations. Kids and adults will also be intrigued by the stories of Virginia Hall, the American spy with one leg who the Nazis called “the most dangerous of all allied spies”, the details

In the Special Ops Tunnels the goal is to avoid the laser beams while pressing as many buttons as you can as you move from one end of the hallway to the other. Talk about fun!
of the Cuban Missile Crisis and Robert Hanssen, considered the worst traitor in FBI history. It’s an interactive history lesson. The Challenges And interspersed between the kiosks and exhibits are what my family thought were the best - the challenges. In Interrogation Stations, we each took a turn to sit in individual booths where we tried to determine if the person on the screen was lying – or not. Then we each got a chance to try and lie and fool the the interviewer. Hint: it has a lot to do with body language. You immediately get your score. Apparently I am a pretty good liar – my kids, thank goodness are not. Parents get to prove they really do have eyes in the back of their heads in Surveillance Station. We entered a huge room with 360-degree projection of live and pre-recorded CCTV imagery. As you don
headsets a surveillance officer prompts you to find various items such as an umbrella, a boy with a red shirt, a bicycle – then you speak into the headset to identify their location in a set amount of time. It’s all designed to test your powers of observation. It was amazing to see the intensity in the faces of adults and children as they searched the screen and revolved in circles in their eagerness to get it right. It’s an understatement that this was extremely engaging and harder than you would think. Then the big hit, Special Ops Tunnels or as my kids named it, the laser room. One at a time we entered a short hallway with crisscrossing lasers and buttons. The goal is to avoid the laser beams while pressing as many buttons as you can on the wall as you move from one end of the hallway to the other. Talk about fun! All ages enjoy this challenge. I spoke to several 8-year-olds who were on line for the third time and were having a blast.
Debriefing And now the moment we had all been waiting for … the debrief. Here, based on your responses at the kiosks and your performance in the challenges, you learn your spy profile, of which there are 10. You can be anything from a hacker to a cryptologist or an agent handler to a spy catcher. If you have to know I would be best suited as an Intelligence Analyst. Everyone in my family was assigned a different profile, which made sense. My kids got a kick out of my assessment, which read in part: You are no James Bond, but you are not a wimp either! Closing Notes SPYSCAPE also includes a full bookshop, a fun gift shop with items at all price points and a modern streamlined café that offers snacks, sandwiches, hot and cold beverages and white orchids on the tables. My family had a blast here. We spent about two and a half hours in what I would describe as not only a museum, but also an interactive experience. What I liked best was the interaction it afforded my family. We dashed from kiosk to kiosk and compared our answers, we championed each other as each one of us found a skill we were good at and we laughed at the puzzles we couldn’t solve - alone or together. We learned about ourselves and about each other. We had tons of fun in an educational environment, made good memories and managed to discover our inner spy. Now we go by the SPYSCAPE motto: Question Everything. December 2018 | WestchesterFamily.com

Broadway Scene //
King Kong By George Wachtel
S
ome critics has been harsh on the new Broadway show King Kong, saying it’s all about animatronics - the use of cable pulled devices or motors to animate an inanimate object - in this case, to bring the 20-foot tall 2,000-pound marionette to life. In fact, Kong requires 14 performers and 16 microprocessors to operate. But while central to the story and, of course, the reason for the show, that’s not what blew me away about this production. There is a non-stop sense of motion and excitement even before Kong is seen. I don’t think I looked away from the stage for the entire first act. The Cast Any star performance needs a good supporting cast. And Kong has two strong ones: the leading lady Christiani Pitts, and the scenic and projection designer Peter English. Pitts as Ann Darrow, the wannabe Broadway stage actress and who becomes Kong’s heartthrob, lights up the stage from the moment she appears. With only one Broadway show to her credit (The Bronx Tale), this relative newcomer sings, dances, climbs and acts - and does it all well. On stage for most of the show, she maintains an intensity and spark throughout, and in the closing numbers lets loose with a vocal range you didn’t expect. No wonder Kong fell for her. Projections The other support system – like Atlas holding the globe – are the magnificent and moving projections from scenic designer Peter English. When projections were first used in live theatre, many people saw them as a substitute for physical scenery. But this technology has matured much as digital photography supplanted paper prints. It was like I was watching a 3D movie as the bow of the ship rose from the stage bounding over cresting waves on the way to Skull Island (Kong’s habitat). The recent production of An American in Paris also used projections majestically, but this is a quantum leap forward. The Story For those unfamiliar with the story, in this current version, a young actress down on her luck meets a maverick filmmaker, Carl Denham (Eric William Morris), who convinces her to join a voyage from 1930s New York to an uncharted island to make

a film against the background of one of the wonders of the world. The actress and Kong get along (she shows little fear) but despite reservations, Ann allows the film team to change course, capture Kong, and bring him back to New York to display in a carnival show. Kong, in captivity, doesn’t fare well, and Ann convinces him to break loose. All this leads to a very sad ending, of course. The Show Now folks, I’m a long-time fan of traditional Broadway musicals. This King Kong is a book musical, with dancing, a full score (more on that later), and wonderful period costumes. The book (story of the show) is by Jack Thorne whose credits include the current Broadway play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. The level of craft everywhere is very high. The $35 million production budget is evident. So where does the production go wrong? The music is merely supportive more of an underscore with a few breakout songs as we would find in a Disney movie. One in particular, “Queen of New York,” plays a feminist note with lines like “at least
I’m not some man’s property.” The dancing is often frenetic featuring acrobatics rather than the traditional Broadway jazz style. But you don’t come for the dancing, you come for excitement and this King Kong has it galore. Be mindful that sensitive youngsters and children under 13 may find the demise of the lifelike Kong overwhelming, especially the final scenes when Kong is shot down atop the Empire State Building. That said the story has been around for almost a century. I think this King Kong will have a long run as well. George A. How to Start a Family Tradition Create Fun-filled Memories by Celebrating Everyday Moments By Suzy Scherr
W
ith holiday season upon us, (in our faces since – what – the day after Halloween now!?) you may have been preparing traditional family celebrations since the leaves began to turn. After all, it’s those traditions that make holidays so special. Doing the same activities, eating the same foods, wearing the same special clothes ... these are the rituals that make the holidays meaningful and memorable. But family traditions don’t have to be limited to holiday celebrations. In fact, some of the most unforgettable and important traditions you can create with your family are likely to happen when celebrating life’s “small” moments. Finding those unremarkable but unique moments is probably easier than you think. Maybe it means going apple picking together every fall or starting a once-a-week family game night. In our house, it’s simple stuff, such as letting our kids plan the dinner menu every Tuesday night or saving a piece of party cake in the freezer to enjoy on their half birthdays. A friend of ours invented Crazy Mixed-Up Day, which takes place in late August (when parents struggle to fill those last few days before school starts) and always kicks off with ice cream sundaes for breakfast – genius! Another started a fabulous tradition in her house years ago. Each year on the first big snow, she makes these super-simple fudgy cookies with her kids. She calls them Blizzard Cookies, and her whole family (and ours) looks forward to making them as soon as the first flakes begin to fall. This recipe comes together quickly and easily with ingredients you’re likely to already have on hand – even if you’re snowed in! Suzy Scherr, author of The Apple Cider Vinegar Companion, The Baking Soda Companion and The Honey Companion is a personal chef, writer and culinary instructor and busy mom with a knack for finding new ways to make being in the kitchen or at the table exciting, fun and accessible. Scherr teaches, cooks for and cooks with adults and kids, making delicious, healthy meals that utilize new products, unfamiliar ingredients and unique ways of incorporating everyday items.
Start a new family tradition and make Blizzard Cookies, super-simple fudgy cookies, on the first big snow of the season. 2. In a small bowl, combine flour, baking soda and salt. Set aside. 3. In a medium bowl, combine melted butter, cocoa powder and sugars. Stir until the mixture resembles wet sand. Add the yogurt and vanilla and stir until combined. 4. Add the flour mixture to the wet ingredients, stirring just until raw flour is no longer visible. 5. Drop by level tablespoonfuls, 2 inches apart, on prepared baking sheets. 6. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes or until just barely set. Allow the cookies to cool on the baking sheets for 5 minutes, then transfer them to a rack to cool completely.
