The weather is getting warmer and soon kids will be splashing in all sorts of water. Don’t for a minute think your child is safe around water — even a blown-up kiddie pool in the backyard is an opportunity for disaster. According to Safe Kids Worldwide, drowning is the leading cause of death for children ages 1 to 4. Children younger than a year old are more likely to drown at home in the bathtub or a bucket! It can happen anywhere. Follow these Safe Kids Worldwide tips this summer and always. 1. Watch kids when they are in or around water, without being distracted — put down your cell phone! Even if lifeguards are present do not rely on them alone for your child’s safety. 2. Keep young children within arm’s reach of an adult. Babies can drown in as little as one inch of water. 3. Empty all tubs, buckets, containers, and kiddie pools immediately after use. Store them upside down so they don’t collect water. 4. Close toilet lids and use toilet seat locks to prevent drowning. Keep doors to bathrooms and laundry rooms closed. 5. Install fences around home pools. A pool fence should surround

Check out her updated fourth-edition of The Baby Name Wizard (Harmony, 2019) for her research-driven, analytical approach to understanding names and trends. I’m not even looking for a baby name and I couldn’t put this book down. I loved the computergenerated, name peak graph for each name. Every name is labeled with its popularity peak to give you a sense for how often the name is being used. For example, the name Sarah was popular in 1880, declined, and then reached its peak in 1981 when it was

Family Fitness: Biking 7 super Westchester rides By Jean Sheff

ike riding is a healthy, fun activity for the entire family. Cycling offers families a chance to spend time outdoors and it’s great exercise. Families with children of different ages can all bike together, which makes this sport especially family-friendly. Check all your equipment before taking off and make sure your child’s helmet fits properly. Take along water and a snack and have fun. Try biking at these area locations. 2019 bicycle Sundays The Westchester Parks Foundation offers this beloved Westchester tradition in May, June, and September. Every year some 60,000 people bike, walk, and jog a 13.1mile loop of the Bronx River Parkway that is closed on select Sundays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to vehicular traffic. The route runs from the Westchester County Center south to Scarsdale Road in Yonkers. All ages and abilities are welcomed, from the professional biker to the kid with training wheels. Ride the route on June 2, 9, 16, 23, 30 as well as Sept. 8, 15, 22, 29. Free. Parking is available at the Westchester County Center for $15 per car. Just learning The Kensico Dam Plaza in Valhalla has extra wide paved paths that are ideal for the youngest cyclers. It’s a popular place for children just experimenting with training wheels. The Plaza is open seven days a week. Permanent park lighting was installed in 2014 making the Plaza available for all until 10 p.m. in the summer. A linear pathway Running adjacent to the Bronx River Parkway is the Bronx River Reservation, the oldest park in Westchester, and home to the Bronx River Pathway. This paved linear path has three segments, a 1-mile loop, a 4.6-mile section and a 5-mile portion that connects with Kensico Dam in Valhalla. See the

A longer ride The North County and South County Trailways are paved multi-use trails ideal for family biking. The North County Trail spans north for 22.1 miles through Westchester to the Putnam County border. The South County Trailway runs from central to southern Westchester for 14.1 miles. Mountain biking x 2 If you’d prefer the challenge and off-road experience of mountain biking, visit Blue Mountain Reservation in Peekskill. The Blue Mountain bike trail offers 20 miles of marked trails geared toward three levels of skill: beginners, intermediate, and advanced. There is a parking fee of $5 for Westchester County Park Pass holders, $10 without. For down county families mountain biking can be enjoyed at Sprain Ridge Park in

Yonkers. The park’s 278 acres are heavily wooded with about eight miles of well maintained and marked trails for biking. These trails are great for intermediate and advanced riders. There is nearly one-mile of paved paths that weave through the site ideal for easy biking. You’ll find two playgrounds in the surrounding 4.5 acres of open lawn and recreation areas. Picnicking is permitted, so take a basket and have lunch al fresco with a Hudson River view. Mogan Anthony A cool dad who’s adding flavor and flair to the Westchester dining scene

here’s an old adage in the restaurant industry – “Never trust a skinny chef” but after meeting with Mogan Anthony, the almost 40-year-old restaurateur and chef behind several successful area restaurants, I’m ready to abandon that notion. He’s clad in a black T-shirt and skinny jeans and by all accounts is svelte thanks to regular CrossFit workouts and an emphasis on healthy cooking techniques. Full disclosure: I am a fan of Anthony’s cooking, particularly the menu offerings at Village Social and Pub Street, both of which are close to my house. I just celebrated my birthday at one of his newest outposts, Locali in Mount Kisco. Situated in the historic Metro-North train station, we had a delicious meal bursting with flavor and inventive rifts on Italian classics plus cocktails infused with fresh ingredients, all in a swanky setting. His culinary roots There is a beautiful and precise attention to detail on the plate and in each restaurant’s ambience. After hearing about Anthony’s unique background, this makes perfect sense. Anthony grew up in Malaysia and as a child enjoyed watching his mother who is Hindu and vegetarian, cook meals with a healthy dose of fresh produce and spices. “Malaysia is a melting pot with Indian, Chinese, and Christian populations,” Anthony explains and each one brings their own culinary traditions. As a teenager, he worked in the hospitality industry at some of the leading hotels in Southeast Asia including the Four Seasons and the Shangri-La. He did all types of jobs from pool service waiter to a food runner.

But it was his job at the Four Seasons Hotel in Singapore where he was first introduced to some leading Michelin-starred chefs brought in from Europe, which spurred a strong desire to work in the kitchen. He loved how these chefs were disciplined and precise in their cooking. This sensibility ultimately helped to

shape his culinary outlook combining it with a passion for Asian street food. Anthony’s wife, Seleste Tan is a former pastry chef of Malaysian and Chinese descent so “Asian foods are very close to my heart,” he says. He ultimately worked at the Four Seasons in Singapore (where they met) for

almost a decade before landing in New York City working for Jean-Georges Vongerichten at leading restaurants such as Perry Street and Spice Market. After several years working for Jean-Georges, they decided to move out of the city due to the high cost of living and settled in Greenwich, Conn. An emphasis on healthy cooking Anthony joined Village Social as culinary director in Mount Kisco in 2011 (there’s one in Rye too) and completely transformed the menu. “I injected my ideas, so we added a lot of small plates and eliminated a lot of butter, creams, and stocks and instead used lighter flavors - things like vinegar, citrus, fish stock, and Japanese bonito flakes.” Anthony thinks a lot about food and frequently visits the city for inspiration. He went to New York City’s Hudson Yards the week it opened to see what was trending at the restaurants. He likes to do his due diligence before incorporating menu items or conceptualizing a new restaurant which is the case with his latest restaurant scheduled to open this month, Fatt Root in Pleasantville. It will feature friendly Asian street foods (think: ramen and rice bowls) and have counter service. “I do a lot of research,” says Anthony. “I went to Japan to learn how to perfect ramen noodles.” In Chinese, fatt means lucky and root can either be interpreted as vegetables or where you come from. Much of the offerings will have a fusion of flavors. Cooking with the family As a father of two young children, 1 1/2-yearold son Lavin and 4 1/2-year-old daughter Laxmi, Anthony enjoys making simple dishes for his kids. “I wake up early and make the kids and my wife breakfast and a simple lunch to heat up.” A family favorite is vegetable fried rice (see sidebar). He also makes a lot of ramen for them. His wife is in charge of dessert and enjoys making chocolate cookies or muffins with the children. After cooking for the family, he heads over to CrossFit for his early morning workout and then drives Laxmi to school. When he grocery shops for the family, he purchases a lot of fruits and vegetables. They also puree baby food for Lavin and freeze it. “I like to buy healthy snacks for the kids like seaweed and these potato chips made in avocado oil that they have at Whole Foods.” Naturally curious, Anthony often purchases products that he may not be familiar with such as goat milk powder and then

Mogan Anthony’s Kale Fried Rice Serves 2 people Ingredients 1 cup chopped black kale 1/2 cup chopped shitake mushrooms 1/4 cup edamame 1/2 cup cooked quinoa 1/2 cup brown basmati rice 1/2 cup farro or any ancient grain (Note: you can substitute any grain for the above three ingredients) 2 whole eggs or just egg whites 2 tbsp. chopped garlic 4 tbsp. chopped shallots 2 tbsp. chopped ginger 6 tbsp. avocado oil / more or less 1 tbsp. Bragg seasoning (Available at Whole Foods) 1 tbsp. tamari (gluten-free soy) 1 tbsp. yuzu juice (Available at Whole Foods) 2 tbsp. chopped scallion for garnish Crispy shallots for garnish (Available at Asian supermarkets)

with paper towels to absorb excess oil. 2. Use 4 tbsp. avocado oil in a large nonstick pan and add the garlic, shallots, and ginger and cook over medium heat until fragrant. Add mushrooms and cook 10 seconds. 3. Add rice/grain to the pan and increase heat and use a wooden spoon to really stir the rice. Add more avocado oil if needed. 4. Season with yuzu juice, Bragg seasoning and tamari. Taste for more seasoning. 5. Push the rice to the edge of the pan and add eggs and fold the rice in slowly. 6. Always check the seasoning one last time before removing from heat. 7. Add edamame. 8 Top with crispy kale, crispy shallots and scallions.

Directions 1. Make crispy kale by heating up 2 tbsp. avocado oil and stir-fry the kale until crispy and season with salt. Set aside on a plate lined

In an industry with notorious long hours, Anthony feels fortunate that his wife has a culinary background and understands the demands of the restaurant business. “She’s also my toughest critic. She helps me adjust a lot of my recipes and she also helped with the creation of some of the desserts at Village Social, which are still on the menu today.” Right now, Anthony is focused on getting

Fatt Root up and running. “It’s crunch time with a new opening,” he says, but after that he plans on taking a well-deserved break and not opening any new restaurants for at least a year. If his current restaurant’s successes are any indication of how this newest one will do, it won’t be long before it flourishes and becomes a staple in the community. Preschool

hoosing a preschool for your child can seem overwhelming. Yet breaking down the task into bite-sized questions can help make the experience less daunting. Your goal is to find a preschool that suits your child and your family. What works for you might not be appropriate for another family, so acknowledge that this is a very personal decision. 1. Know what your child needs. If you have a child and are working or have other demands on your time some of your child’s care is going to need to be overseen by someone else. Determine if the preschool environment is right for your child. Hiring a sitter, nanny or selecting an au pair is an option if childcare is your concern. If you also want to provide socialization and educational opportunities preschool can help provide that. 2. Decide what you need. Do you work outside the home, or have other obligations that require a full five-day program? Are you considering that a part-time morning or afternoon program would offer enough coverage for you? Or perhaps you are flexible, and the number of days and hours you require aren’t as critical. Also ask what program is right for your child. Along with these questions decide on the location area – in your town, closer to your work or your spouse’s work location? And of course, cost will be another important factor. 3. Is the preschool regulated? Kathy Halas, executive director of the Child Care Council of Westchester, Inc. a not-for-profit child care resource and referral organization says, “Preschool programs that operate sessions of under three hours are not required to be

Some parents prefer the cooperative approach, which can be a less expensive alternative and allows parents direct involvement with their child’s schooling. There are also preschools that offer language immersion, or international preschools that offer a bilingual education. Match the school with your child. Keep in mind that more than one environment may work for your family. 5. Staff. Ask about the qualifications, including education and experience of the staff. Halas advises parents not be overly impressed by the physicality of a school. “The single most important aspect in selecting a preschool is the connection between the staff and children,” she says. She also advises to inquire if the staff receives ongoing professional development, what the teacher to child ratio is, and if there is much staff turnover. Staff should also have CPR, first aid training, and policies for handling medical emergencies. 6. Safety and cleanliness. Ask what actions the school takes to provide a safe and secure environment. Staff should be required to wash hands before and after diaper changes, and children should wash hands before meals or snacks, and after bathroom visits. Sanitation procedures are important. 7. Behavior management. Otherwise known as discipline, how a school handles behavior

Halas advises parents to ask for the school’s policy handbook. “The handbook should explain exactly how behavior is addressed,” says Halas. “Behavior correction should not be punitive in any way at all. Remember our children’s social and emotional growth is very important.” 8. Communication. Ask if the school provides regular communication with parents and how communication is handled. Do they rely on emails, texts, or phone calls? Also ask what is best way for you contact them with concerns or questions. 9. Curriculum. Halas advises parents to get a

clear understanding about what the program is providing. She is adamant that parents realize that young children respond best to play-based programs. “We all want our children well-prepared for grade school but young children learn best in an experiential environment where they can use all their senses to learn about themselves and the world.” She advises parents not be concerned about academics. Studies continually prove that an emphasis on academics at this age contributes to childhood anxiety and youngsters that are turned off to school. 10. Visit. A visit to the school is critical and some schools require it. When you go,

observe if there are positive interactions between students and teachers. Are children treated with respect? How are disagreements between students handled? Halas recommends that parents continue to drop-in even after enrollment. “Of course the school may ask that you not come at nap time or during lunch, but any school that doesn’t welcome you can be a red flag.” As well, never forget that built-in guide that helps most parents through the little and big decisions of parenting – your gut! o Before They Grow” is the slogan of this toddler-centric amusement park, and it couldn’t be truer. Sesame Place is nothing short of magical for children under 6. Featuring gentle rides, choreographed shows, carnival games with a generous prize policy, and a waterpark to splash and slide, it’s a place parents will miss when kids graduate to the more extreme parks. Plan your visit Season passes are the best deal (wait until August and get the rest of the year free with a 2020 pass), or find a flash sale or Groupon deal for daily tickets. Teachers can apply for a free season pass, and there are discounts for seniors, active military, and pregnant women. The front gate price is $75, but most pay closer to $35. Some hotels nearby offer packages with park admission. Unless you want a weekend away, we suggest keeping to one day. Langhorne is an easy daytrip, 100 minutes from lower Westchester. Start with breakfast The park opens at 10 a.m. during peak season, but get a head start by making an advance booking for a 9 a.m. Breakfast with Elmo & Friends. Unwind after your drive and fuel up the kids before they ride and splash all day. Children under 2 eat free! You’ll meet many characters, who roam the tables and put on a short dance show. Bring zip-lock bags, there’s so much food at this buffet you’ll want dessert to go. This experience is a great start to the day and beats standing in long lines around the park for a photo with their favorite Muppet. Stroller or locker? Sesame Place has a generous food policy. Bring in almost anything except alcohol or large coolers. Bottles, containers, and snacks are just fine. Strollers and wagons are welcome, or you can rent. You’ll have to leave your stroller at some shows, but we still suggest bringing it for a place to hold supplies, snacks, and tired kids. You can rent a locker, but it will cost you a hefty $35. We save money by storing valuables in a waterproof neck pouch and leaving the rest in our stroller while we splash around. With our phone protected we can take photos in the

waterpark. We’ve never had trouble leaving snacks and towels behind, but we keep an eye on our stroller. Buy souvenirs on your way out so they’re not left unattended. Dining There are plenty of places to eat. Traditional dining areas offer tableside or self service for a sit-down meal, and snack and treat kiosks throughout the park will ease everyone’s hunger. When it’s crowded we head to the lesser-trafficked upstairs cafeteria at Elmo’s Eatery. The new Neighborhood and new show New this season is a renovated Neighborhood area that matches today’s Sesame Street set, with interactive elements such as talking trash cans and photo op spots like Big Bird’s Nest. There’s also a new show called Our Street is Sesame Street that features the same Muppets as on TV (all other shows feature people inside large Muppet costumes). but there are activities such as trick-ortreating, egg hunts, train rides, and special characters (we love winter photos with the Abominable Snowman!). Ticket prices are lower and our kids don’t mind that it’s chilly. Speaking of weather, with the Sunny Day Guarantee you can get free return tickets if rides are closed due to weather, making the trip less of a gamble. Extras Sesame Place offers special experiences such as private meet-and-greets, priority boarding, and photo passes. The Magic Queue for $20-$35 offers priority boarding at certain attractions. We never know what our toddlers will be up for, so unless you’re with an older kid determined to ride everything, we recommend skipping this one. The photo pass at $50 is not for us either. You’ll wait in some of the longest lines in the park to use it at the character meets. And oftentimes your own cellphone pictures are better than the ones from the “professionals” (read: college students). Remind your kids to look at your camera instead of theirs. The VIP Meetand-Greet with Elmo and Cookie is great for

shy kids who need time to warm up to the characters. It’s quick, but the $100 price tag includes up to six guests and a $50 all-day photo pass, so split this with friends, take lots of photos around the park, and it’s a good deal. We had a great time at ours! Cabana rentals Our favorite extra is the Twiddlebug cabana rental. Starting at about $67 per person for up to six guests, everyone receives a souvenir towel, unlimited bottles of soda, water, milk, and juice, a private splash area, character visit, locker rental, and meal. We loved the privacy and security of the cabanas, as they gave us space to change clothes, leave our stuff, and even nap. Plan to spend all day at the park if you indulge. They come with a table and chairs inside and lounge chairs outside. Certified autism center Sesame Place is a Certified Autism Center. Anyone with sensory needs is encouraged to visit the Quiet Rooms or borrow Noise-Cancelling Headphones. The Ride Accessibility Special Access Program allows priority access on rides.

Our verdict It may be smaller in size than other parks, but with plenty of fun rides and ample space for snack stops, diaper swaps, swimsuit changes, and stroller naps, it’s an easy outing with a great vibe. Kids are happy, so parents are happy. It’s a Sunny Day every time. Kids’ Sports Injuries on the Rise Why this is happening and what to do about it! By Steven Struhl, M.D.

ports participation in the pediatric population has grown dramatically over the years. Watching your child participate in competitive sports is one of the great joys of parenthood. There are obvious benefits for children too. Athletics improves physical fitness, coordination, and self-discipline and also teaches valuable lessons about teamwork and goal setting. However, this huge uptick in activity levels has resulted in an alarming increase in sports injuries. More than 3.5 million children under age 14 receive medical treatment for sports injuries each year and children between ages 5 and 14 account for nearly 40% of all sports related injuries treated in hospitals. In youth baseball, there has been a verifiable epidemic of shoulder and elbow injuries, with a fivefold increase in serious injuries among youth baseball and softball. Fortunately, prevention can be effective, as the CDC estimates that half of these injuries may be preventable with simple approaches.

How to prevent acute injuries Acute injuries are due to sudden trauma and include fractures, sprains, and strains as well as lacerations and bruises; it also includes concussions, dehydration, and heat-related issues. The keys to preventing acute injuries include: • Wear proper protective gear • Be in proper physical condition, which includes both muscle strengthening as well as emphasizing flexibility • Warm up before playing • Use proper technique • Stay well-hydrated • In hot weather, follow strict guidelines for breaks and cool-down periods • Take concussions seriously and follow recommended guidelines for neurological evaluation and mandatory time off the field. Chronic injury causes Chronic injuries are as common as acute injuries among young athletes. These injuries are caused by a number of factors, including improper training or technique, prolonged repetitive motion, inadequate equipment, and intrinsic anatomic factors. It’s important to realize that children are not simply a smaller

version of adults and that injury prevention requires an understanding of these differences. The bones, tendons, muscles, and ligaments of a child are still growing and that makes them more prone to injury. In addition, there are significant differences in coordination, strength, and stamina. Plus a child’s growth plates are weaker than the surrounding ligaments and an injury that would result in an ankle sprain in an adult might instead cause a displaced growth plate injury in a child. Depending on the type and severity of a growth plate fracture, future growth of that bone could be affected. Overuse injuries: reasons and suggestions One of the most prevalent factors in the rise of chronic overuse injuries is the trend toward focusing on a single sport year round. The rapid growth of travel teams for children and

adolescents has facilitated the trend of hyper focusing on a single sport the entire year. This puts excessive and repetitive stress on immature muscle-bone units. Too often, there is an intense “win at all costs” attitude of parents and coaches, leading to unrealistic expectations. In this environment, early warning signs of injury may be ignored or repressed. The adage of “no pain, no gain” is not appropriate! Minimizing repetitive-use injuries has been a major priority of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons and they have partnered with STOP Sports Injuries to educate parents, coaches, and athletes about prevention. They recommend that you should limit your child to playing on only one team per season. For example, participating on both a travel and a school soccer team in the same season should be avoided. They also recommend avoiding playing a single sport year-round. Participating in multiple sports throughout the year enhances general fitness and aids in motor development. Taking regular breaks is essential for injury prevention. It is recommended that pediatric athletes take off at least one or two days a week from competitive practice, competition, and sport-specific training. Both preseason and in-season preventative training programs focusing on neuromuscular control, balance, coordination, flexibility, and strengthening are strongly recommended for reducing overall injury risk. Fitness programs should ideally begin at least two months before the start of a sports season. The major objective of athletic activity should be enjoyable participation. The long-term benefits of fitness, motor skills, and social skills are important. Done in moderation and with attention to the basics of injury prevention, athletic activity in children and adolescents is low risk and rewarding, resulting in great benefits. The DOS and DON’Ts on Packing for Camp By Jess Michaels

ou chose the perfect overnight camp for your child so now all that’s left is to plan for packing. Each camp has its own packing list and policies so be sure to read through them carefully. Here is a quick guideline on what to bring and what to leave at home as you begin the packing process. DON’T pack bunk gifts if they aren’t allowed – Sometimes parents like to pack a gift for the whole bunk such as personalized T-shirts or sweatshirts but you don’t want to send these gifts if the camp doesn’t welcome them. Some camps feel these gifts are a distraction to what camp is about and can also create competition between other bunks at camp. DON’T pack an iPhone or other banned

electronics – Camp is a place for children to take a break from technology and focus on conversations and camp activities. This is why the majority of summer camps don’t allow campers to bring their phones and other electronics such as iPads or Kindles. DON’T pack food, candy or gum – It’s a big no to pack edible items in your child’s bags. It will just be taken away from them once they arrive at camp. DON’T pack the wrong swimsuit – Check with your camp about the bathing suit policy. Many camps have policies that campers wear one-piece bathing suits only. Be sure to leave the two-piece bathing suits at home if that is what your child’s camp policy states. DO pack stationery, envelopes & stamps – Camp is an unplugged environment. If you’d like to hear from your child make sure

to pack stationery! Writing is an almost lost art so don’t forget to either pack an example of how to address and stamp an envelope or go over it with your child before heading to camp. DO pack something personal from home – There is no need to go overboard but do allow your child to bring a special stuffed friend, a comfortable pillow or framed photo to make your child’s bunk space feel more personal. DO pack camp uniforms or colors if needed – If your camp is a uniform camp, you most likely have already ordered everything you need but keep in mind that even if your camp isn’t a uniform camp, you still might need to pack certain items that include the camp colors. DO check about hairdryers and makeup – Some camps don’t allow hairdryers and makeup so your camper can focus on activities and friendships without worrying about how they look.
