lasgow is a cool city destination. As host city for the 2014 Commonwealth Games the city showed the world its new and vibrant identity and it only takes a few hours in Glasgow to realise you are experiencing one of the best places in Europe. The City Centre, Merchant City and West End are vibrant and filled with superb attractions, world class shopping, fabulous dining, stylish bars and cafes as well as wonderful nightlife. Regardless of your budget or length of stay Glasgow has something for everyone. Getting around is easy with its compact size and easy grid layout. Exploring the city centre on foot is a great idea. From most downtown hotels you are within easy reach of a huge range of shopping, dining and entertainment choices. There is so much to do and such variety it’s no wonder that Glasgow is
recognised as the best UK shopping, dining and late night destination outside of London. The city’s attractions are stunning and not at all expensive to visit. Many have free entry while others charge really low entry fees. The best way to see more of the city for less and visit all the top attractions is to buy a ticket on the big red City Sightseeing bus tour. With tickets valid for two days you can hop on/hop

lasgow has an excellent transport system that makes exploring the city easy and affordable. If you arrive by air into Glasgow International the best tip is to use the Glasgow Shuttle airport to city bus link which operates up to every 10 minutes, 24 hours a day. Once in the city there are lots of ways to get about but if you are in town for more than one day then one of the best ways to see more of the city for less and sample the top attractions is to buy a ticket on the red, open top City Sightseeing bus tour. Your ticket is valid for two days and you can hop on/hop off as often as you like. Or jump onto The Subway, Glasgow’s unique underground rail network. These fast little trains will carry you around under the city and makes exploring the West End, South Side and other neighbourhoods really easy. Enquire at SPT Travel centres, they will direct you to the best value deals available. If you plan a day trip out of the city it’s likely that there is a direct fast train or bus service to your destination. Edinburgh, Stirling and the Loch Lomond area are no more than 50 minutes away and easily visited in one day. For trips further out you can get great car rental rates from Arnold Clark, a local and reliable rental company.

T
he Glasgow Subway is an underground light rapid transit line which opened on December 14, 1896, it is the third-oldest underground metro system in the world after the London Underground and the Budapest Metro. It is also one of the very few railways in the world with a track running gauge of 4 ft (1,219 mm). Formerly a cable railway, the Subway was later electrified, but its two circular tracks were never expanded. The line was originally known as the Glasgow District Subway, but was later renamed Glasgow Subway Railway until it was taken over by the Glasgow Corporation who renamed it the

St Enoch Centre
S
t Enoch Centre is located in Glasgow's busy city centre, one of the UK's top shopping destinations outside London nd has played a part in the city's life for more than 200 years. St Enoch Square was originally opened in 1783 as a grazing area for sheep and since then it has seen some of Glasgow’s finest landmarks come and go. The St Enoch Railway Station first opened its doors in 1876 and the St. Enoch Hotel followed in 1879. When the Hotel closed in 1974 the site was used as a car park until 1985 when work started on St Enoch Centre. Since opening on May 25, 1989, St Enoch Centre has consistently led the way for shopping centres in Scotland, inspiring the growth of Glasgow’s vibrant retail sector and underwent a major refurbishment programme to add more retail space and enhance the entrance facing onto Argyle Street in 1998. In 2005 work started on an extensive £150 million redevelopment and refurbishment programme. The first phase of the redevelopment was unveiled in November 2009 with the opening of world famous toy store Hamleys, and completed in May 2010, welcoming a range of new and exclusive stores as well as cafes and restaurants overlooking St Enoch Square.

oted Scotland’s Favourite Building by the public in 2016, Princes Square is an ornate 19th century Merchants’ Square – ideally located in the heart of Glasgow City Centre. With over 30 shops which includes; Kate Spade, Vivienne Westwood, Reiss & Shelia Fleet. Princes Square is Glasgow’s leading speciality shopping, dining and entertainment destination. Offering an unrivalled mix of high street brands and designer labels, stylish restaurants and bars, boutique cinema and gin school. Princes Square has something for everyone, all under one elegant roof. The original buildings consisted of a four storey merchant square built in yellow sandstone and completed in 1841. The then owner, James Campbell, was knighted by Queen Victoria and later became Lord Provost of Glasgow. The city offers visitors a fantastic variety of things to do once the sun goes down. The choice is vast. The city boasts some of Scotland’s best theatres and performing companies playing to packed houses at the Tron, Kings, Royal, Tramway or Citizen’s Theatres where there is an ever changing menu of great shows, plays, variety and panto. There are some great live music and concert venues, in fact too many to list, but its definitely worth checking what’s on in places such as the SECC, the Hydro Arena, Royal Concert Hall, City Halls, Barrowlands,
O2ABC and O2 Academy where some of the world’s top artists regularly perform. There are also lots of smaller, more intimate places all around the city where you can enjoy your night. The famous King Tuts Wah Wah Hut or Oran Mor both have an awesome reputation for great music while if the very best of stand up comedy takes your fancy then a night out at the Stand Comedy Club will leave you heading back to your hotel with a smile on your face. If loud, late and electric is more to your liking then glam up for a night out at one of the city’s many fabulous clubs such as the Arches, Sub Club, Nice N Sleazy or 13th Note where you can find music, dancing, cocktails and fun until the wee small hours.

lasgow Merchant City is a neighbourhood with its own identity located within the city centre area. Like many inner city areas throughout the world, the Merchant City has transformed itself from a former commercial trading area into the cool, chic haven of style that exists today. lasgow’s West End district is only about two miles away from the city centre but a world away in terms of its unique character and style. On foot, by subway or bus easily accesses the area which is home to a fantastic and eclectic mixture of attractions, cafes, bars, famous restaurants, a world famous comedy club as well as some really lovely boutique shops.
Hunterian Museum, another important historical collection. Also within easy reach of the West End is the award winning Riverside Transport Museum with the awesome Titan Crane just a little further out towards Clydebank. If sightseeing on foot in the fresh air is more your thing then take the time to mingle within the cobbled lanes to enjoy the area’s Victorian
architecture or wander around the famous campus at Glasgow University. You may also take time to enjoy the wonderful Botanic Gardens, yet another gem within a few minutes walk of Byres Road. Navvies’ Barge
Navvies’ Barge is a social enterprise canal boat moored at Applecross Basin. The barge runs boat trips along Glasgow’s stretch of the canal and hosts a café and a variety of workshops, making the waterway more accessible to people in the local community. Customers can enjoy a day out on the barge, make themselves at home on-board with a buffet and relax their way along the canal. The barge is also shared with community groups in order to open up the canal and the benefits of time on the water with as many people as possible. Established as a workers’ co-operative, Navvies’ Barge pays tribute to the workers who made the canal – the navvies. The social enterprise aims to empower people in their work and remind them of the power of worker solidarity.

Hamiltonhill Claypits Local Nature Reserve
Hamiltonhill Claypits Local Nature Reserve is an urban oasis, just a mile from Glasgow city centre. An inner-city parkland, the Claypits is a 950 hectare greenspace, home to an array of plants, trees and wildlife including roe deer, peregrine falcons, whitethroat warblers and a host of waterfowl. Originally the home of a clay quarry used when the Forth and Clyde Canal was first built in the late 1700s, it was also the site of a foundry, glassworks and boat-building yard. The Loading Bay Skatepark

Borrodale Burn bridge became the world’s longest concrete span at 127 feet, and Glenfinnan Viaduct was a huge structure in concrete at 416 yards long with 21 arches. Glasgow to Crianlarich
F
rom Glasgow Queen Street station the train travels uphill towards the Kilpatrick hills, providing impressive views of the Erskine Bridge and down the Clyde Estuary towards the Firth of Clyde. Pass through the small villages and towns on the Clyde – such as Bowling, Dumbarton (with its celebrated castle), Cardross (where Robert the Bruce lived) and Garelochhead – you will be treated to your first glimpse of the ‘Arrochar Alps’. At Garelochhead station you get stunning panoramic views of the Gare Loch, with Loch Long just starting to come into view. The jetty below is Finnart deep-water terminal, built by the US Navy during the Second World
War. Tankers discharge their oil here to be pumped by pipeline to Grangemouth, 60 miles away to the east.
& Tarbet station, the world-renowned bonnie, bonnie banks of Loch Lomond appear on the right.
Approaching Arrochar, look left for great views of the celebrated ‘Arrochar Alps’, including such craggy peaks as the Beinn Narnain, Beinn Ime and the well-loved Cobbler. Shortly after departing Arrochar
Across the loch, dominated by the towering presence of Ben Lomond, this area was once home to Rob Roy MacGregor, legendary warrior, robber and folk hero. He used to question captives in a nearby cave – and wasn’t averse to dipping them in the loch to extract information! Enjoy the magnificent scenery surrounding Loch Lomond before arriving in Crianlarich. Here the train line divides, with the western route turning towards Oban, and the north continuing up to Fort William and Mallaig.

J
ust beyond Upper Tyndrum, the northbound fork of the West Highland Line navigates the massive sentinels of Beinn Odhar and Beinn Dorain in the unique Horseshoe Curve. Next stop is Bridge of Orchy - well known to walkers and climbers alike as a landmark hamlet

on the West Highland Way – where nearby you’ll find the ruin of Achallader Castle. Passing Loch Tulla on the left, the line starts to cross the wild Rannoch Moor, a vast wilderness, where the railway ‘floats’ on top of the moor on a mattress of tree roots, brushwood, earth and ashes. Arriving at Corrour, you are now 1350 feet above sea level - the highest mainline station in the UK. The station is one of the most remote in Britain (the nearest road is 10 miles away) and is also famous for appearing in the hit film ‘Trainspotting’ (and the sequel) starring Ewan McGregor. After passing through Tulloch and shortly before arriving in Roy Bridge, look out for the foaming waters of Monessie Gorge on the left. Once you have passed through Spean Bridge, just before the train pulls into Fort William, the massive bulk of the
Nevis Range comes into full view. At just over 4,400ft, Ben Nevis is not only Britain’s highest mountain but covers a huge land area with a base circumference of 24 miles. From Fort William you’ll soon be heading off on the final section of the Line, en route to Mallaig. Almost as soon as your journey begins the line crosses part of the Caledonian Canal, Britain’s longest inland waterway, which links Fort William with Inverness. To the right is Neptune’s Staircase, a series of eight canal locks. The curve of the 100ft-high Glenfinnan Viaduct sweeps you past the head of Loch Shiel and the monument to Bonnie Prince Charlie, marking where he landed and unfurled his standard in 1745 to start the Jacobite Rebellion. After passing through the beautiful lochs and hills surrounding Lochailort and Beasdale, you arrive in Arisaig – a popular tourist spot with due to its spectacular views over Loch Nan Ceall where you can see the islands of Rum and Eigg. Less than 10 minutes later you’ll see the spectacular silver sands of Morar, made famous in the 1983 film ‘Local Hero’ starring Burt Lancaster and Peter Capaldi. You’ll also cross Scotland’s shortest river, which runs out of our deepest loch - Loch Morar. As you approach Mallaig take in the breathtaking jagged peaks of Skye.
West Highland Line
Crianlarich to Oban
T
he Oban line passes through Tyndrum Lower and takes you through beautiful Glen Lochy to Dalmally; and just beyond stands the ruin of Kilchurn Castle, ancient stronghold of Clan Campbell.
Around the head of Loch Awe is the Pass of Brander, which skirts the towering bulk of Ben Cruachan – the Hollow Mountain – which conceals a fascinating secret; the mountain caverns house an innovative hydro power scheme inside. To the left is the River Awe, setting for Sir Walter Scott’s romance ‘The Highland Widow’. Nearing Oban now and approaching Connel Ferry, you can see the Falls of Lora, a tidal race at the narrow entrance to Loch Etive. This natural occurrence, caused by a fast-moving tide, produces white rapids that can last for up to five days. Your final stop on this section of the Line, Oban, is a popular tourist destination, well-known for its many seafood restaurants.
