The Town Of

helensburgh

THE TOWN Helensburgh is a town within the Helensburgh and Lomond Area of Argyll and Bute Council, Scotland. In the Middle Ages it was within the Earldom of Lennox, an area sometimes referred to as the Lennox. It lies on the north shore of the Firth of Clyde and the mouth of Gareloch close to the western boundary of the town. Helensburgh is 25 miles (40 km) northwest of Glasgow. Helensburgh lies at the western mainland end of the Highland Boundary Fault. This means that the hills to the north of Helensburgh lie in the Highlands, whereas the land to the south of Helensburgh is in the Lowlands or Central Belt of Scotland. This makes the town and ideal stop for all those who want to enjoy the peaceful and wonderful panoramas of the Highlands with the added bonus of access to a lively city centre.

THE HILL HOUSE The Hill House in Helensburgh is one of Charles and Margaret Macdonald Mackintosh's most famous works, probably second only to the (now destroyed) Glasgow School of Art. It was designed and built for the publisher Walter Blackie in 1902–1904. In addition to the house, Mackintosh designed most of the interior, furniture and fittings. Mackintosh's attention to detail extended to prescribing the colour of cut flowers that the Blackies might place on a table in the living room. In 1982 the house was donated to the National Trust for Scotland which maintains it and opens it to visitors.

The exterior The uniform and grayish exterior treatment of the building blends in with an overcast sky. The completely asymmetrical construction forms different roof levels and shapes, and the minimum decoration, heavy walls, and rectangular and square windows express a strong, sober construction. The exterior qualities of the building are nearly the opposite of the warm, exotic, carefully decorated and smooth interior.

Unfortunately for almost all its entire life the Hill House has had problems with damp penetration. These were so severe that in 2019 the whole building was enclosed within "The Box"; this is a remarkable structure with a solid roof and chainmail walls. Its purpose is to let the building dry out.

The interior The mansion combined the Edwardian period’s traditional ‘femininity’ of an intimate, inside space, with the ‘masculinity’ of the exterior public world, both uncommonly used throughout the interior of the building. To Mackintosh, bringing the masculine aspects to the inside would break away from the over decorated, entirely feminine conventional interiors. This allowed him to convey different feelings and experiences depending on the purpose of each space. Mackintosh used different materials, colours and lighting, when necessary to perform a full experiential transition from one point to another. All in such an elegant and well planned manner, that with the absence of one the other would mar.

CHARLES R. MACKINTOSH Charles Rennie Mackintosh (7 June 1868 – 10 December 1928) was a Scottish architect, designer, water colourist and artist. His artistic approach had much in common with European Symbolism. His work, alongside that of his wife Margaret Macdonald, was influential on European design movements such as Art Nouveau and Secessionism and praised by great modernists such as Josef Hoffmann. Mackintosh's architectural career was a relatively short one, but of significant quality and impact. All his major commissions were between 1895 and 1906, including designs for private homes, commercial buildings, interior renovations and churches.

DID YOU KNOW?

Charles Rennie Mackintosh (1868 -1928)

By 1913, work in Glasgow was very difficult to get hold of, and the couple moved to Sussex. Charles’ ‘bizarre’ Glasgow accent, as well as their ‘artistic’ style of dressing and the fact that they sent and received so much correspondence abroad, meant that they became top suspects and had their house searched by the Foreign Office

SCOTTISH SUBMARINE CENTRE At 53ft in length and 36 tons, X-51 Stickleback is the only surviving example of four X-Class boats built between 195455. They were: X51 Stickleback X52 Shrimp X53 Sprat X54 Minnow Their design was an upgraded version of the WWII XE class midget submarine, famous for their major part in 'operation source', a daring mission to neutralise the heavy German warships – Tirpitz, Scharnhorst and Lützow. Although built for a proposed Cold-War mission, the operation was ultimately cancelled.

After being decommissioned in 1977, she spent several years at the Imperial War Museum, before returning home to the Scottish Submarine Centre in 2016. The building which is now the Submarine Centre was once King Street Hall, the annex of St Columba Church. After the front of the building was opened to allow the X-51 to be installed in her new home, a world-class multimillion pound media centre has been constructed around her. This 21st-century technology will be used to tell the story of submarines, from the 19th-century into the future of submarines.

The City Of

glasgow

THE CITY Glasgow is the most populated city in Scotland. It is the third most populous city in the United Kingdom, as of 2019 estimated population of 611,748. Historically part of Lanarkshire, the city now forms the Glasgow City council area, one of the 32 council areas of Scotland; the local authority is Glasgow City Council. Glasgow is situated on the River Clyde in the country's West Central Lowlands. It is the fifth most visited city in the UK. Glasgow grew from a small rural settlement on the River Clyde to become the largest seaport in Scotland, and tenth largest by tonnage in Britain. Expanding from the medieval bishopric and royal burgh, and the later establishment of the University of Glasgow in the fifteenth century, it became a major centre of the Scottish Enlightenment in the eighteenth century. From the eighteenth century onwards, the city also grew as one of Great Britain's main hubs of transatlantic trade with North America and the West Indies.

Glasgow Metro is the 3rd oldest in the world behind London and Budapest

With the onset of the Industrial Revolution, the population and economy of Glasgow and the surrounding region expanded rapidly to become one of the world's pre-eminent centres of chemicals, textiles and engineering; most notably in the shipbuilding and marine engineering industry, which produced many innovative and famous vessels. Glasgow was the "Second City of the British Empire" for much of the Victorian era and Edwardian period, having taken the mantle from pre-independence Dublin, which was largely recognised the second city during the Georgian era. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Glasgow's population grew rapidly, reaching a peak of 1,127,825 people in 1938. Comprehensive urban renewal projects in the 1960s resulted in large-scale relocation of people to designated new towns, such as Cumbernauld, Livingston, East Kilbride and peripheral suburbs, followed by successive boundary changes. This process reduced the population of the City of Glasgow council area to an estimated 633,120, with 985,290 people living in the defined Greater Glasgow contiguous urban area as of 2016. The wider metropolitan area is home to over 1,800,000 people, equating to around 33% of Scotland's population.

THINGS TO DO Glasgow is well known for its beautiful, thriving shopping districts and the culture that it has to offer. It attracts a large number of tourists every year. It doesn’t matter whether you want to experience culture, food or shopping, you’ll find something to fit your interests within the boundaries of this up and coming city. The slogan, “People Make Glasgow”, really does fit the place, and you’ll be having friendly conversations with locals and travellers alike there before you know it.

West End Considered by many to be the most beautiful part of Glasgow, you certainly shouldn’t miss the opportunity to see the West End on your adventure. It’s one of those places that leaves a mark on you while you’re travelling, having its own independent character that can’t easily be defined. With a beautiful mix of character and stunning architecture it houses some of the loveliest vintage shops, and alleyways full of small, intimate bars and restaurants.

Visit Kelvingrove Art Museum Situated within the heart of Glasgow’s famous West End you can find Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum. As a free attraction it really shouldn’t be missed, and it’s only a quick walk away from the Kelvingrove subway station, making it easy to get to.

Curious?

Inside you’ll find more than 22 themed galleries, and 8000 objects to capture your attention.

Glasgow Cathedral & Necropolis Most of the medieval cathedrals that exist throughout the United Kingdom are now ruins, so you should take advantage of seeing one of the last remaining great cathedrals while you’re in Glasgow. It has been used for worship for more than 800 years, and has one of the largest collections of post-war stained glass windows. Sitting directly adjacent from the Glasgow Cathedral you’ll find one of the oddest attractions that you should see during your time in Glasgow. Modelled on the Pere-Lachaise in Paris, The Necropolis is now known as one of the most significant cemeteries in the whole of Europe.

The Lighthouse A tall, narrow, elegant amalgam of stone, steel and glass tucked away on Mitchell Lane just off Buchanan Street, this Centre for Design is a beacon for the creative industries in Scotland.

People Palace & Winter Garden Do you enjoy learning about the history of each new city that you visit? Now as weather dependent as this attraction is, it will give you the opportunity to view the way life was in Glasgow throughout the 18th to the 20th century. Inside of the main house you’ll find a collection of artefacts, photographs, prints and films from across the years. The Winter Gardens outside of the house are beautiful, which is what makes it such a weather dependent attraction, you can wonder amongst plants from far off lands, and see the beautifully restored Doulton fountain. If you start to get a little bit hungry among the grounds, then there’s a fairly priced café where you can rest and have a bite to eat.

Attaining a height of 14 m and with a 21.3 m basin, the Doulton Fountain is the largest terracotta fountain in the world.

SEC Armadillo The SEC Armadillo (originally known as the Clyde Auditorium) is an auditorium located near the River Clyde. Plans for a new building to increase the capacity of the SECC complex were initiated in 1994. Designed by architects Foster and Partners, construction of the 3,000 seat venue (hence the name '3k' Armadillo) started in September 1995, and was completed in August 1997, by which time it had earned its affectionate nickname, due to the similarity of its shape to that of the animal of the same name.

urban myth Many comparisons have been made with the Sydney Opera House, although this was not the architects' inspiration for the design, which was in fact an interlocking series of ship's hulls, in reference to the Clyde's shipbuilding heritage.

SSE Hydro If you like to watch performances while you’re travelling, then it would be more than worth having a look at what artists are playing at The SSE Hydro at the time that you’re travelling. They’ve housed many a famous name in their purpose built entertainment venue, and with many surrounding bars and restaurants you’ll be able to keep yourself busy both before and after. The venue itself is quite a sight, and has enough room for a large number of people watching the performance, but it quite often shows not just music, but comedy and a variety of other shows. You do need to be aware that it can get quite busy, but for most people this just adds to the atmosphere.

Glasgow City Chambers Situated in the famous George Square the City Chambers act as the home to Glasgow City Council. From the outside of the building you wouldn’t even get the idea to expect the grand inner chambers that lie within the case of the outer architecture. With a ballroom that appears to have stepped out of another century, and two spires with decorated dome ceilings. The tour guides all provide an exceptional service, telling you just the right amount of information to teach you about what you’re seeing. Make sure you take a camera with you, you’ll get some beautiful shots in there.
