A GUIDE TO

“Cities gain value through public art cultural, social, and economic value. Public art is a distinguishing part of our public history and our evolving culture. It reflects and reveals our society, adds meaning to our cities, and uniqueness to our communities. Public art humanizes the built environment and invigorates public spaces. It provides an intersection between past, present and future; between disciplines, and between ideas. Americans for the Arts

ART

IN DOWNTOWN SYRACUSE

Public art often reflects a moment in time, a slice of the past and the emotion of an occasion or circumstance. Peering into the eyes of a figure cast in bronze deepens our perspective. Studying the abstract form opens the mind to endless possibilities. Experiencing the whimsy of art activates our imagination. Our civic spaces are enhanced by public art, and our quality of life is enriched. It highlights our diversity and heritage, and invites interaction with our environment. Downtown Syracuse is rich in public art and thus, more beautiful to those who live, work and play here and more welcoming to those who visit.

Masks of Native American faces surround the Christopher Columbus Monument by Lorenzo V. Baldi, celebrating the people who were already in America when Columbus arrived. (Page 9)

This Downtown Public Art walking tour begins and ends in Clinton Square. Just follow the centerfold map on Pages 14-15. However, your tour can begin at any point along the way. You may need to veer slightly from the outlined route to see all of the numbered art installations. For your safety, please use crosswalks. Page 1
