A Downtown Update

Gritty and unapologetic, Downtown York thrives on its own terms. It’s a fearless place that celebrates initiative and resourcefulness, and it’s been that way since York was founded in the 1740s. Downtown York is historically edgy everywhere you look, and we’re proud to showcase that personality on the pages of Downtown York Magazine. To do that, we have worked with YRK Creative to relaunch the magazine with a new reader-friendly design. In addition to a new look, you will find stronger storytelling about the people, places and things that make Downtown York historically edgy. These changes aren’t happening in a vacuum. They are part of a research-driven, communitywide

destination branding initiative that we have been working on for more than a year. We have a new Downtown York logo, which you can see on the cover of this magazine. We have a cool new tagline — historically edgy. But the new brand is much more than that. It’s our way to capture the spirit of Downtown York and show the world what makes this place special. This is where the Second Continental Congress adopted the Articles of Confederation on November 15, 1777. It’s where William Goodridge, a freed slave, became both a wealthy businessman and a hero on the Underground Railroad. It’s where manufacturers banded together in the 1940s to land defense contracts during World War II, a practice known as the York Plan and the inspiration for the city’s next breakthrough. It’s where historic buildings are even characters themselves. Despite its age, Downtown York exudes a progressive and youthful personality found everywhere from Think Loud Studios to the Taste Test kitchen, where budding chefs become bona fide restaurateurs. Creative tech and design firms call Downtown York home, and bold businesses keep us on the competitive edge. Festivals, street fairs and events like First Friday, Yorkfest and Creekfire continue to spark the renaissance. And all of it happens in a diverse community, where lifelong residents and recent arrivals enjoy a quality of life that’s remarkably affordable, close to nature and accessible to cities like Baltimore and Philly. Downtown York is a mashup of old and new, of tradition and innovation, revolution and evolution. It’s on the historic register and the cutting edge. The stories we tell in this magazine will show that. We hope you enjoy reading them as much as we enjoy telling them. Stay edgy, my friends,

Our Downtown York: A City of Celebration Story by: Michael Vyskocil, Contributor, YRK Creative Photography by: Contributor, YRK Creative* & Downtown Inc

*

Yesterday meets tomorrow. Brick and stone facades house robots and technology yet to be tapped. Ideas that fueled a revolutionary movement inspire new ways of thinking to propel a community forward. While the holiday season is traditionally a time for celebration, every day is a celebration in Downtown York. It’s a celebration of a community building on its history to forge new paths into its future. It’s a declaration of York as a capital for design thinking. It’s a recognition that within the city’s traditiaon, the seeds for innovation are continually nurtured. Artists and architects, chefs and creatives, educators and entrepreneurs, small business owners and students … our Downtown York is people like you. On the next page, we introduce you to several personalities who contribute to the arts, beauty, business, culture, fashion, food and history that define this community.

Meet Downtown York: historically edgy, inside and out.

08 | Downtown York | Welcome to Downtown York

Martin Fedorko Associate, Benjamin & Bond The Downtown York I see has a youthful, vibrant pulse. My Downtown York is proud of and invests in its history. Intertwined with this idea of history, we also have an entrepreneurial ecosystem that is being built upon. We have a chance to make York a place of innovation and an entrepreneurial hub for all types of businesses and fields.

*

Cal Weary Founder and CEO, Weary Arts Group Throughout York’s history, people brought pieces and chunks of the world outside York to enjoy in their little slice of heaven here. When you look at history, bodies of water helped the growth of cities because of commerce. Today, York’s body of water is technology, exploration of the arts, startup companies, restaurants and more. We are at an epicenter of good things: When we flourish as a city, York County flourishes as well. Hilary Arthur Owner, Arthur & Daughters Work and family life for me is together in one place: Downtown York. Downtown is always evolving, and the business community here disproves the stereotype that people are not open-minded. People are hungry to try new things and they’re open to newness. People also want authenticity and a connection with community when they go out to dinner, shop and be entertained. That’s what Downtown York has to offer.

*

Chef Hamir Patel Owner, Hamir’s Indian Fusion Downtown York is a happening place now. It’s really a fusion of history and modern. Look at the buildings: history on the outside and new ideas inside. I’m still learning about the city’s history, and I think we need to constantly make people aware of that history. The more you know about York’s history, I believe the more you can feel connected and a part of the community here today. Devon “DiDi” Shilling Co-Owner, DiDi & Smiling John’s Traditional Barber Shop & Salon Here you can have a Harry Potter day at a museum or urban weddings at historic buildings. It shows people that there is cool stuff to do in York. I’ve never lived anywhere as neighborly as Downtown York. It’s the mecca of small business in York County. I think the downtown community more so than anywhere is focused on inclusion and making sure people feel welcomed and appreciated. Kelly Summerford Living History Interpreter (Interpreting the Persona of William C. Goodridge*) When I think about York’s history, I think of the William C. Goodridge Freedom Center and Underground Railroad Museum and how it opens up a part of history that may not have been talked about before. York is a beacon for understanding history. I also see now a sense of culture in Downtown York — a melting pot culture with new ideas and new people. *William C. Goodridge was a biracial entrepreneur who rose to business prominence in 19th century Pennsylvania. His home in Downtown York (123 E. Philadelphia St.) is now the William C. Goodridge Freedom Center and Underground Railroad Museum, one of the first National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom sites designated by the National Park Service as a National Historic Landmark.

FINDING THEIR NEIGHBORHOOD

Downtown Dweller Story by: Andrew Staub, Marketing & Communications Manager, Downtown Inc Photography by: Dayan Jimenez When Ruth Robbins and April Herring joined two friends to buy a three-story rowhome on Beaver Street in 2016, they thought they were investing in an affordable rental property in up-and-coming Downtown York Instead, they made it their home. Ruth and April moved to Downtown York from Philadelphia last year, becoming residents in the property they once hoped to rent out. Even without jobs lined up, the low cost of living, the walkable downtown and the surrounding countryside were enough to convince them to make the jump. “We took a complete leap, April said. It worked. The couple have immersed themselves in York. Ruth joined Community

April Herring, left, and Ruth Robbins, right, shown in the living room of their Downtown York apartment.

Progress Council as chief program officer. April found a job at Carroll Community College in Westminster, Maryland, as well as a spot on the city’s planning commission. Just a short walk from the heart of downtown, they spend their weekends with friends at Central Market, SMALL STAR Art House and restaurants such as The Left Bank, Revival Social Club and the Holy Hound Taproom. Saturdays typically bring excursions on the York County Heritage Rail Trail, kayaking on nearby Lake Redman or hikes at places like Codorus State Park. Ruth and April live in a second-floor apartment in the rowhome which they’ve transformed from a bank-owned fixer upper into a modern and stylish living space. Their favorite space is the open kitchen and living room area, where a granite-topped bar provides a great place to enjoy a craft brew. April and Ruth have filled their walls with art from friends and pieces found locally or pieces from their time in Philly. Reminders of the original home, such as two small bits of plaster and a tiny metal elbow joint on the living room shelf, can be found throughout the apartment. The bar features a trestle made from some of the home’s original wooden beams and exposed brick adds dimension to the stairwell. Inside the bedroom closet, the couple found writing underneath wallpaper dated 1887. They left it visible. New exterior paint and colorful flowers have given the façade a fresh, but historic, look. It’s not hard to imagine a home like this one in another historic city. “We’re city people,” Ruth said, adding that Downtown York shares some similarities to their former Philly neighborhood, East Passyunk Crossing. “People always say that Philadelphia is like the sixth borough of New York City, and this feels like a neighborhood of Philadelphia.”

Masquerade Ball to Heat Up Foundry Again Downtown Inc chooses boldest location yet for signature fundraising event Story by: Andrew Staub, Marketing & Communications Manager, Downtown Inc Renderings by: abSketches | Photography by: Downtown Inc

The former Pewterex Foundry in York sits idle today, but it will roar back to life October 27 when Downtown Inc hosts its Fifth Annual Masquerade Ball at the vacant industrial site on North Hartley Street. “It’s not often that someone decides to throw a party in an empty former foundry, but that’s exactly what we’re doing,” said Silas Chamberlin, CEO of Downtown Inc. “We wanted to push the limits for this milestone Masquerade Ball and choose a truly unforgettable venue. This is an opportunity to show that we can take a historic site that’s still rough around the edges and reinvent it for one night.” Presenting sponsor Royal Square Development & Construction owns the venue and has tabbed it “The Foundry.” The company believes it could one day host everything from a large brewery, a restaurant, living space and more. This year’s Masquerade Ball theme will be Fire & Ice, paying homage to the 54,000-square-foot building’s historic uses as both a foundry and an ice machine manufacturing plant. The Masquerade Ball is Downtown Inc’s signature fundraising event. All proceeds support the organization’s mission to enhance and encourage investment in York’s Central Business District. Guests will enjoy hors d’oeuvres, dancing, a cash bar, Tarot card readings, live music from Central City Orchestra and more.

Closing Thought What Makes Downtown York Historically Edgy to You?

“I think it’s a place for any musician, for any people who are musicians born here, not only wanting to convey what they have, but express it with their feelings and express it with their stories.” Jason Wilson-Kageni

“I love the historic buildings of York, in particular the Victorian homes. They give our city a unique feel and add to the overall personality that sets us apart from any other city. They give us an old-world feel in the midst of a fast-evolving world.” Kelly Taveras

“What I like about York are the people in it: Everyone is willing to work together and build something greater. There’s a sense that we all want to make a greater York. We’re all working together to try to figure it out.” James Manjo

30 | Downtown York | Closing Thoughts

“I see this interesting mix of the old and the new, especially recently. There’s this modern edge coming in where we are rebuilding the city. Then there’s this historic colonial town in the mix of all of it. It’s really interesting to see the old combining with the new.” Lizz Dawson

We’re looking to you to help us build an Edgy Inventory. We’re searching for stories —big and small — of the people, places and things that make Downtown York historically edgy. Keep in mind that stories don’t have to be both historic and edgy — any example of history or forward thinking will work.

Do you have a favorite historic building? Do you know someone with an interesting hobby? Is there a business using innovation to improve people’s lives? Let us know! Send your thoughts to astaub@downtownyorkpa.com. We may even share your example as we tell Downtown York’s story. Fall/Holiday ’18 | 31
