FIVE MONTHS AND AROUND 3300NM LATER.... October was a ‘happy-sad kinda month’ for the 2023 Go East Rally participants as they made their way back to their home ports after a very memorable experience sailing from Australia to New Caledonia, Vanuatu and back to Australia. SEE THE PREDICTWIND GE23 FLEET TRACKER HERE
In the last few issues of AHOY, we have shared their adventures, which began in May when the participants, who were mostly unknown to each other at the time, departed our shores to answer the call of adventure. Those articles tell the story of the adventures that were had. If you missed those articles, you can read them here: AHOY Sailing Library. What has not been mentioned is the thing that never ceases to amaze and inspire me. As a result of the shared experiences and the challenges faced along the way, this group of individuals quickly became a community. A community of friends who share the same sense of adventure, support and encourage each other when the going gets tough, celebrate their achievements together, and, along the way, made many memories that are certain to last a lifetime. How do I know this? Apart from having spent about 4 weeks with them during the course of the rally and witnessed the bonds that formed, as the rally organiser, I also created a WhatsApp group where the participants could share their experiences, photos, videos, tips on places to see and where to find this and that. What I witnessed as the group administrator over the past five months was nothing short of incredible. Hundreds of messages and almost as many photos were shared. Even when they were in the middle of the ocean, a sunset photo or an encounter with some dolphins or a fish they had caught would be shared and commented on in the most positive manner. And from time to time, we also received messages like these... John & Leanne, On behalf of Debra and myself, we would like to take this opportunity to say a heartfelt thank you. Steve T - Bijoux
“What an experience we have been a part of! A big thank you to you and Leanne Brent & Karen - Vamp”
Thank you John & Leanne, Forever grateful xx Darren & Julie - Bombora

New Caledonia’s
Top Anchorages In this month's ‘AHOY’ let's set sail for Ilot Kouare, one of the 20 lagoon islands in New Caledonia’s Great Southern Lagoon. Kouare is for you if you are into mind-blowing beauty above and below the water.
Click here to see this as a 360 sphere image
Ilot Kouare is 40 nautical miles to the south of Noumea. On your way, you should stop for a day or so at Ilot Mato, which is just 27 nautical miles from Noumea. Southern Lagoon. Ilot Mato
You can also stop for a day at Ilot Ua, 10 miles further south, before making the 5-mile sail to Ilot Kouare.
If you're sailing in July to September you might have the pleasure of seeing some humpback whales on the sail to to Kouare - they like the Great South Lagoon, too. We saw a mother and her calf cavorting right next to Kouare plus dolphins and sea turtles as well.
Click here to see this as a 360 sphere image
On arrival at Ilot Kouare, you'll drop the anchor onto a white sand bottom in 6 to 7 meters of crystal clear turquoise water. During the SE trade winds, it's nice and calm on the western side of the island and it's surrounding coral reefs. If a westerly approaches, you just up-anchor and move a short way to the west wind anchorage and if the winds head into the east to north east, you just shift to the east wind anchorage.
Once snugly anchored, the fun begins. The entire reef right off your bow is a vibrant living coral reef, gorgeous all the way from just below the surface to the sand bottom 5 meters below. Click here to see this as a 360 sphere image
Here is where you can enjoy easy snorkelling and a chance to play with your camera and take awesome photos for your friends and family that will make them wish they were there with you.
When you finally get chilly, it's a short paddle to the pure white, soft sand beach where you and your friends will more than likely be all by yourselves, except for some cute sea birds and maybe a turtle or some little sand crabs. Click here to see this as a 360 sphere image
If you're an avid surfer it's only 5 miles to Kouare Pass on the Great Barrier Reef. Ilot Kouare is in the Parc de Grand Lagon Sud so you have to behave and not molest the birds, whales, turtles or the vast medley of coral reef critters.
The Rocket Cruising Guide to New Caledonia, in addition to providing the exact GPS waypoints and routes to get you safely anchored at Ilot Kouare, will fill you in on park regulations to make sure, when you return again, you’ll find Kouare as beautifully alive as is today.
About the author Richard Chesher is a PhD marine scientist. He and his wife Frederique, a professional photographer and artist, have cruised the South Pacific aboard their Kelly Peterson 44 cutter Moira since 1975. They first visited New Caledonia in 1980. In 2000, they decided to create the Rocket Cruising and Travel Guides to New Caledonia and Vanuatu. so future cruisers could enjoy the magnificent anchorages and cultural experiences of these two South Pacific island counties as much as they do.
THE ROCKET GUIDES ARE NOT BOOKS OR ANYTHING LIKE ANY CRUISING GUIDE YOU’VE EVER SEEN BEFORE! They are interactive programs for Windows and Macintosh computers (not Android or iPad tablets). Named the Rocket Guides because they allow you to survey the entire country and individual regions and islands from satellite images and then zoom in to very high-resolution images taken by special aerial survey cameras used by Government departments for land surveys and map making. The first Rocket Guides were published 8 years before Google started Google Earth. However, the aerial and satellite images are not much help for cruising without critical information on depths, bottom types, holding conditions, currents, surge, navigational aids, etc. Richard and Frederique did what professional map makers call “ground truth surveys” to determine the best anchorages for cruising yachts, often spending a week or more doing depth transects, underwater and surface photography, GPS points and routes for each of the 220 New Caledonia anchorages they surveyed covering all the New Caledonian islands and regions. Richard designed, coded, and published the Rocket Cruising and Travel guides along with 16 associated websites. He and Frederique took all the surface and underwater images, including the innovative 360-degree sphere images featured on the Rocket Guides. They constantly update the guides with new information and images. Want to know about Internet access when cruising in New Caledonia? Need to find someone to repair something? How about where to shop for supplies or parts, rent a car, fill your cooking gas bottles, find a restaurant, get fuel and slip the boat? Clearance information – like what food stores are allowed by quarantine? Health issues, such as how to avoid a shark attack or how to treat a coral cut? Marine Park boundaries and regulations? THE ROCKET GUIDES HAVE ALL THAT AND MUCH, MUCH MORE.

SW PACIFIC TO AUSTRALIA
Busy Times In Bundy It has been a busy time over the last couple of weeks for the team at Bundaberg Port Marina, the Australian Border Force and the Department Of Agriculture Officers as vessels arrive from overseas. Favourable conditions for the passage from New Caledonia and Vanuatu have been few and far between during October, and the development of an early season cyclone (TC LOLA) saw many vessels that had not intended to depart for Australia until late in the month depart early, resulting in a lot of vessels (rally participants and non-rally participants) all arriving in Bundaberg at around the same time.
56 yachts from 14 countries have joined the 2023 Go West Rally, most of which have now arrived in Bundaberg. Many of the owners of these yachts will be attending the Welcome Week Events that take place during the first week of November.

Bundaberg Port Marina Cyclone and Insurance Information PAST CYCLONE TRACKS History has shown that the Bundaberg region is in a low-risk location when it comes to the chances of a major cyclone impacting our area. The data below is taken directly from the Australian Bureau of Meteorology site. Since 1969, we have had 4 named systems pass within 50km, and all of these were Category 1 or less. (Catagory 1 = typical strongest gust of 125 km/h or 67.5 knots) PAST CYCLONE TRACKS 1969-2022
INFORMATION SOURCE http://www.bom.gov.au/cyclone/tropical-cyclone-knowledge-centre/history/tracks/
Bundaberg Port Marina Cyclone and Insurance Information PROCEDURES It is vital that you ensure your contact details are always up to date with the hardstand office. In the event of an impending cyclone or severe weather conditions, every effort will be made to contact absent vessel owners to inform them of the weather changes and any action that will be taken to ensure the vessels’ safety as well as the safety of property and staff. However, as time is usually vital in an emergency, this may not always be possible. If conditions deteriorate, Bundaberg Port Marina staff can prevent owners from returning to their vessels. As personal safety is the priority, it is important that owners abide by the Manager's decisions and any directions given. To reduce wind impact on loose materials, clean up and secure any loose items on board vessels. Ensure all deck gear, including life buoys, boat hooks, buckets, fishing gear and floats, have been removed and stored below. Deflate and stow inflatable dinghies. Dinghies, if left on deck or in davits, should be cleaned out and securely lashed and bungs removed. Ensure self-furling sails and covers have been removed, and if this is not possible, double wrap or tie these components in such a way that the wind cannot tease any ends out and allow flapping of gear. Disconnect all power leads and water hoses and remove them to a secure location. Ensure all gas cylinders – including those on vessels – have been turned off at the cylinder. Clean up and secure any loose items at ground level. If there are boats not capable of going in the water, ensure all cradle stands, props, supports, turnbuckles and cyclone straps are tensioned. Shut off power and disconnect all power leads from pillar boxes, roll up and store. Close and secure all waste oil units. Ensure your mobile phones and any other handheld radios are fully charged. After vessels are evacuated and all other precautions taken, turn all power off. In the event of a severe tropical cyclone and owners are present, hardstand vessels will be returned to the water while weather conditions permit. Owners wishing to move their vessels must do so before conditions deteriorate, as the Harbour Master may close the marina to all traffic. You are reminded that severe conditions make manoeuvring in the marina dangerous. Your actions may not only cause damage to your vessel but also to others and may cause injury or even loss of life.
Bundaberg Port Marina Cyclone and Insurance Information VESSEL SECURITY All vessels in the hardstand/ Dry Storage areas are secured to cradles and ground with a combination of 2500 kg lashing straps and 900mm axle spikes driven into the ground to prevent cradles from moving. The pictures below demonstrate the process undertaken. These straps remain on the vessel until owners return and the vessel is moved back to the water.
For many years, Bundaberg Port Marina has worked with numerous insurance companies to satisfy their risk profile. We can provide you with a copy of our cyclone preparedness plan to assist you in obtaining your insurer's consent to store your vessel at our facility. Contact Bundaberg Port Marina. Beyond the Break Walls Of The New South Wales Coast
Justine and Glen had their dream yacht built in the Philippines and sailed her home in 2014, they gave up their ties to land the following year to sail and explore Australia’s least known places chasing history and bush tucker. With a love of sea but no sailing experience they are self-taught. In this article they share their thoughts on crossing coastal bars and exploring beyond the break walls.

“We learnt that bars aren’t scary, dangerous or a thing to be feared, respect them & follow the rules and you get the rewards of the magical anchorages hiding behind them.” Justine Porter
Should we? Can we? Is it safe? My mind boggles at the thought of sailing into NSW for the first time after spending most of our cruising life in the north of Australia, playing in safe gulfs and protected by the Great Barrier Reef. There is not much swell to contend with up here and no real bar crossings to speak of. The odd cyclone is easy to avoid with all the wonderful safe-havens. NSW has so many bars and nothing to stop the swell. There is however a massive draw card, so many friends I’ve made online are there and a women’s sailing conference is on!
"I’ve heard so many stories of sailors avoiding this piece of coast thinking it will be a minefield, it’s a bit offputting, but there is a massive amount of our population sailing in these waters. It mustn’t be that tricky? Tricky, maybe- worth it absolutely! We are not risk takers, would call ourselves fair weather sailors and never sail to a timetable, we are more cautious than many, but, we are also sailing on a budget, so we rarely stop in marinas. I need a plan. I reach out to the brains trust, that group of sailors in Australia that offer up advice freely and willingly the only payment they expect is to share a tasty beverage with you once you make it into their backyards!! Backyards tucked in behind those pesky bars."

Well, we learnt that bars aren’t scary, dangerous, or a thing to be feared. Respect them, follow the rules, and you get the rewards of the magical anchorages hiding behind them.
"So, what are the rules, you ask?" Respect them Preparation Choose your weather Timing is everything Life jackets on Tasty beverage in the fridge
"Pretty simple, really- ignore the rules and your crossing could be uncomfortable, very eventful or even dangerous, requiring a rescue." Preparation is important, find local information, does it have changing sand bars, are there waypoints for the safest route, contact the local VMR for information, getting recent drone or aerial footage is super helpful, consider depths in relation to your draft. Ensure your boat is in good condition, check your engine, fuel amount and quality. The very last thing you need is engine failure and being stuck in a changing bar. Many bars in NSW have cameras that you can access online- you can study other boats entering and can see their routes, and, on the day, you can look ahead to gauge the swell conditions as you approach. You can even tell friends when you expect to cross, and they can watch you come in and take cool screenshots for your memories! Choosing your weather is important. You need good visibility, low swell heights and preferably low winds. Do not attempt bars if the swell is up. The general rule of thumb is that less than 1.5m swell and under 15 knots are considered safe. I’m a chicken or maybe smart, so we prefer under 1m swell and will choose to wait longer for it to drop.
Departing The Southport Seaway - The most southern QLD Bar & The Gateway to Cruising NSW Image Credits : Justine Porter & Down Under Rally
Don’t forget over run times when looking at tide times. It’s important to seek local knowledge for the details of the overrun times, usually found in cruising guides or the local VMR, but local sailors are best, over runs can be quite changeable. You need to consider any recent rain events or flooding in the catchment area that might change the over run. For example, the Clarence river has a 2 hour over run after high tide and a two and a half hour over run after low tide. This can change if there is a large amount of fresh water coming down the river.
Locals are so great at sharing the idiosyncrasies of their bars, finding local sailors online in Australia is easy- just ask them- there is never a dumb question here, except the one not asked. Timing is the single most important part of crossing these bars- get it right and you will have a smooth ride, get it wrong and your heart will feel like it’s going to escape your chest. Arriving at a bar should be done on a rising tide, at least 2 hours after the low, we generally try to get there on the last hour of the incoming tide nearer slack water that’s when the flow has eased the most making for a nice crossing, but leaving your crossing to late and missing the run in is definitely not clever. An incoming tide is safest both arriving and leaving a bar. It’s best to aim for a timing where you won’t have the sun in your eyes, I wouldn’t recommend doing a crossing at night until you become familiar or more experienced at them. Vision really is important. You can gauge many of the bars channels by seeing the darker deeper water, seeing the actual sand bar or in some you can see the breaking waves on either side of the channel that can help you keep centred in the channel. It is a legal requirement in NSW to wear a life jacket regardless of the size vessel you are on when crossing a bar- it’s for your safety and pretty simple to do to keep everyone happy. I call it my airbag! When we arrive at the bar we slow and study any wave patterns looking for any timings of swell, watch any other boats coming and going and generally just check the conditions are acceptable to us, we have never sailed a bar and wouldn’t recommend it unless your very experienced although we often look in awe at anyone sailing out. Once you are committed, it’s really not considered safe to turn on a bar, most don’t have the room to manoeuvre like that in the channel and you can risk get swamped side on.
s.v Shima Stopping Traffic! Cruising the Clarence River, a hidden gem on the NSW coast . Image Credit: Justine Porter
Our first bar to attempt was the Wide Bay Bar which is notorious in sailing stories, many people fear it, we did, so we waited at the gorgeous Pelican Bay for over a week, swimming at the stunning beach, fishing and meeting friends. The swell was at 2m, occasionally dropping to 1.5 and we watched others more experienced leave but we wanted better conditions and some stories of boisterous crossings fed back to us which made us feel happy in our choice to wait. Finally, the day came with less than 1m swell and a nice 10-12kt breeze, we entered in a long line of other yachts and followed the co-ordinates and had the satisfaction of a smooth easy crossing- we were delighted! It was stress-free and when the anchor was down, we treated ourselves to our final rule, the celebratory tasty beverage. The Yamba bar has a decent reputation for getting a nasty pressure wave, and many a yacht has come to grief on it by not being patient waiting for the correct conditions, there is not really a good place nearby to anchor to wait out an early arrival so many will risk it, we timed our sail and got local information from a friend and again had a calm stress free entry.
Free Short Stay Pontoon Clarence River Image credit: Justine Porter
"Our biggest problem here was the discovery of the most incredible cruising ground full of gems, friends and pubs that had us stay longer than our planned 2 weeks, 2 months just vanished in the fun. It surely is not to be missed." Over time, we got more confident and learned a hard lesson about complacency. We arrived at the Port Macquarie bar too early and had accepted a slightly larger swell of 1.5m, but it had only recently the day before being at 2.5m which can often mean some erroneous waves might be bigger today. We sat out the front, prepared to wait an extra hour for the tide to slow down and could see some unacceptable swells, but whilst sitting there, the local sailing club yachts started heading out. We looked at each other and said if they can surely, we can! Big mistake, these are locals they know their bar- we didn’t it was the first time in here for us. I called VMR, who said it was likely safe but is reported as being boisterous. that should have been a warning to us, but stupid bravado took over. We timed the swells and went for it. Have you felt your heart pounding out of your chest, hurt your knuckles clinging on? I have! As we hit the pressure wave, Shima rode high up and tried to slew to its action towards the rocks. We surfed in and were mostly at its mercy; some clever timing of my hubby with engine power got us through, and keeping his nerve to keep us straight using our engines was exemplary. I can tell you that once we got tied up to the marina, we consumed numerous tasty beverages. We left that bar in the most mundane conditions and never repeated that mistake. Maybe we all need to do something a bit wrong just once to learn how to respect them.

"We made the most amazing memories in NSW behind those bars, only had one go a little pear shaped and crossed many perfectly stress free. I’m no longer afraid of them, I respect them and embrace the lessons they provided. If anyone tells you it’s scary it really doesn’t have to be- you’ll miss out if you don’t try!"

Completing a first aid training course tailored specifically for the marine environment is a great way to gain the knowledge and skills necessary to manage illness and injuries on board. It’s also a valuable skill to carry through life.

Never have an uncomfortable night’s sleep on your boat again! Introducing Flexima® the world’s most comfortable on-water mattress system
Designed for boats. Designed for comfort. Designed for you You’re loving your boat. And why not … it’s been designed with days of fun and leisure in mind. But, like many boats, it may not be designed with a good night’s sleep in mind. A comfortable bed is treated as an afterthought, and mattresses are often a thin slab of hard foam lazily shaped to a plywood base. Sadly, this comes with a low level of comfort and creates problems with condensation and mould.
Now, there’s a mattress system that changes all that... The unique Flexima® mattress has been purpose designed to provide the level of comfort you enjoy in your home …on your boat, promoting the ‘deep restorative sleep’ you crave and deserve on the water.
ecomarinebedding.com.au Down Under Rally Members Offer.* Receive a complimentary Tencel fitted sheet set (fitted sheet, top sheet and 2 pillowcases) valued at $380 when you purchase your new Flexima® mattress from Eco Marine Bedding. *Down Under Rally Membership must be current at the time of placing your order.

Life as a yacht delivery skipper by Nico Curb-Yacht Delivery Solutions
It’s always exciting to arrive at a boat we are about to deliver. Before we arrive at the vessel, we plan our route and weather strategy, taking into account the prevailing winds, currents, and potential hazards. We need to have backup plans in case we encounter bad weather or mechanical problems. Nowadays, we also need to pay more attention to our health and follow some essential precautions, as falling ill at sea would be very detrimental. A lot goes through your mind when you step aboard for the first time and think; this is our new home for the next few weeks whilst we cross an ocean. Our first task is to check everything meticulously, from the mast and rigging down to the galley equipment. People can spend 6 or 12 months getting their yacht ready for a passage, whereas we routinely board a yacht, do an inspection, get fuel and provisions and leave in a couple of days.
It is of utmost importance to thoroughly check all the components on board, including the fuel and oil filters, to ensure that they are compatible with the engine. I have encountered situations where a boat had a cupboard full of fuel filters that were not suitable for any of the engines on board. So, we always double-check everything to avoid any potential issues. Tools are another area we are very thorough with. For instance, does the multimeter have a battery? Are the spanners rusty and seized? Do the torches have batteries? Because when you need a working torch, you really need one. We also make sure there are spare parts, such as fuses, bulbs, and impellers. You never know what might break or wear out during the voyage, so you have to be prepared for any eventuality. We familiarize ourselves with the boat’s systems, such as the navigation equipment, the autopilot, the water maker, the generator, the wind vane, etc. We need to know how they work, how to troubleshoot them, and how to fix them if need be. We also need to know where all the seacocks, valves, switches, and circuit breakers are located. I quite often label floor panels, cupboards or drawers with a piece of masking tape and write on what's in the cupboard like "battery isolation switch", "bilge pump handle", and "water bottles". It's easy to think you're going to remember where everything is, and perhaps you will, but will the crew? We check safety equipment, including the life raft, flares, EPIRB, fire extinguishers, and life jackets, to make sure they are in good condition and within their expiry dates. A safety briefing with the crew before we depart will take place, explaining what to do in case of an emergency.
Life as a yacht delivery skipper by Nico Curb-Yacht Delivery Solutions
Prior to the crew arriving at the boat, we will already have provided them a copy of our 'standard operating procedures’ that, while not vessel specific, outline many do's, don'ts and what if’s. After completing all these checks and preparations, we are ready to embark on our sailing adventure. We raise the sails and head for the horizon, savouring the beauty of nature and the challenge of sailing. As a team, we take turns on watch and keep a log of our position, speed, course, weather, and any incidents. We communicate with the authorities via Iridium GO! or Starlink and share our tracking link with friends and family so they can follow our progress in real time - they say it's very addictive! We also keep in touch with the owner daily to assure them that everything is going well. Yacht deliveries are a mixed bag and not for everyone! We witness amazing sunrises and sunsets, gaze at the stars and marvel at their beauty. We also face challenges along the way. We encounter poor weather and deal with fatigue, boredom, or loneliness. We cope with leaks, breakdowns, and repairs. We have to overcome fears, doubts and frustrations. But we never give up. We keep sailing until we reach our destination, feeling a sense of accomplishment and pride when we dock at the marina or anchor in the bay. We celebrate our achievements and thank each other for their support. Then we clean up the boat, hand her over to the owner or agent, go to the airport and look forward to our next adventure.
Yacht Delivery Solutions specialises in the delivery of sail and power boats from 40 to 120ft throughout New Zealand, The South Pacific, Asia and Australia. We are also happy to talk about boats, so feel free to get in touch.

SOLOMON ISLANDS CRUISING INFO. BY DAVID LEWIS - S.V BRAVE. Current at September 2020
ABOUT THE LEWIS FAMILY AND HOW WE CAME TO SPEND CYCLONE SEASON IN THE SOLOMON ISLANDS We moved onto our boat in July 2018. Our home port was Picton in The South Island of New Zealand. We made our way up the coast of NZ to Opua in preparation for departing for Australia. While in Opua, waiting for the right weather window, we met Sally and Forfar, who had done the Down Under Rally - Go East Rally the previous year. They highly recommended the rally, and since we knew absolutely no cruisers in Australia, we thought it would be a great way of meeting people who would be heading East. We sailed from Opua to Coffs Harbour, about 1300nm, at the start of December 2018. Onboard, we had extra crew, including my 19-year-old nephew and a Canadian who had just sailed from Panama. The extra crew made the shifts much easier. We had a fairly uneventful trip until we started getting close to Australia, where we ended up in the EAC with sustained winds of 40-45 knots for a good part of our final night. We spent the summer cruising down to Sydney and then slowly back up to the Gold Coast before departing for New Cal in May 2019.
About 2 months were spent in New Caledonia. The first week at Ilot Maitre was amazing, attending events with all the Go East participants. From then, we just started to explore. Thanks to our involvement with the rally, we met some amazing cruisers and were never lonely. Next, we sailed to Vanuatu, where we worked our way up the chain of islands, starting in Anatom and finally leaving from Sola on the island of Vanua Lava in the north. Spending about 8 weeks exploring these super-friendly islands. Having left the rally cruisers behind in New Caledonia, we had less company, but our goal was to try and get to Palau in time for Xmas, so we had to get moving. Vanuatu to Honiara in the Solomons was a bit of a dream sail for us. We had 25-30 knots from behind, so we arrived quicker than expected…. No complaints!! We didn’t know much about the Solomon Islands before we arrived. All the research I had done was in trying to make sure it was a safe country to visit with a yacht. There seems to be quite a negative perception of cruising the Solomon Islands; however, once you get past the rubbish, heat and betel nut, it’s a great place. Betel nut chewers look as though they’ve been eating children and spitting blood on the street. It’s unpleasant, but chewers are harmless. Once you’re away from Honiara, the country is breathtaking, with amazing anchorages, diving and really friendly people. Cyclone season in the Solomon Islands has been fantastic, and we will be very sad to leave. Unfortunately, due to COVID-19, there were only 5 other cruising boats in the country, which made our time there a bit lonely. Otherwise, the weather was consistent, giving us a glorious day indispersed with afternoon showers, thunder and lightning. We have made some amazing friends through the Down Under Rally. The contacts and businesses that we have been introduced to have been, and still are, invaluable. We have travelled to some incredible places on our boat, however, it’s the people that you meet along the way that create the real memories.

HONIARA We visited in September / October and the winds were from the SE I have been warned that if the wind comes around towards the North, it really is not the place to be. ANCHORAGE The general pattern we found was a calm morning with the wind and swell developing from midday. By later in the afternoon, the wind will drop, but the swell will continue. With no wind, you’ll be side on to the swell, not fun!! The swell will drop off, however, it can get pretty uncomfortable. The best spot to anchor is on the eastern side of the harbour and tie a stern line to the semi-submerged fishing boat. You’ll be well sheltered from the swell that wraps around and comes into the harbour. There is a mooring owned by the dive shop, which operates from the Point Cruz yacht club. This mooring is on the western side of the harbour and not very well sheltered. You will need to check when it was inspected last. We spent a few days on it and got slapped around by the afternoon swell. Alternatively, Fred Douglas, who is the owner of the Breakwater Café on the western side of the harbour, has a very good mooring. You can also tie a stern line back towards Fred's café, which keeps you pointed into the afternoon swell. This, in my opinion, is the best option if it’s available. The Breakwater Café is probably the best café in the Solomon Islands. Fred is a bloody nice guy and very well-connected. You can also leave your dinghy here, hop the fence, and you’re into the Heritage Hotel!! Please get permission from Fred before you do this.

CHECKING IN See Noonsite for the current procedure. www.noonsite.com/place/solomon-islands/view/clearance/
We arrived on a Sunday afternoon, anchored, stayed on the boat until the morning and then went into The Point Cruz yacht club, where we left the dinghy. The staff at the yacht club pointed us in the direction of Customs and Quarantine, a short 5-10 minute walk. After completing each task, Customs Quarantine, Immigration etc. you need to pay the corresponding fee. You have to take your invoice/bill to another building/ department and pay the fee, and you will then be given a receipt, at which point you return to the original building and collect your paperwork. Customs and Quarantine are in the same building, however, payment for Customs is out the door and across the street, payment for Quarantine is about a 20-minute walk to the Ministry of Agriculture, don’t forget you have to walk back with your receipt. Immigration is about a 10-minute walk in the opposite direction. We did Customs and Quarantine in the morning and Immigration after lunch. Most government departments are shut at lunchtime. We started at 9 am and were fully checked in by 3 pm. If you check in through Noro, it would be a much quicker process. Billy, the Immigration man in Noro, is the most helpful official I’ve come across!
MONEY
As soon as you leave Honiara, there are very few places to use a credit card. We travelled mainly in the Western Province. There is a BSP bank and ATM in Noro and also in Gizo. The ANZ in Gizo shut as of September 2020. Unlike most ATMs, if you draw money out from the BSP and the machine has run out of money, it will still charge you. You need to lodge an enquiry with your own bank to get the money refunded. It’s a good idea to check that the machine has money before trying a withdrawal. Always make sure you have plenty of cash as the ATMs don’t always work.
GENERAL INFORMATION CELL PHONES We only used ‘Our Telekom’ and therefore can’t vouch for B Mobile. In Honiara, it was fast 4G. Outside of Honiara, at best, you’ll get is 3G. You need to change the settings on your phone to get internet outside of Honiara. With iPhones, you go into settings, mobile data, APN Settings, where it says APN, you need to write “internet”. This is for the three categories: Mobile Data, LTE Setup and Personal Hotspot. Having left Honiara, we spent two weeks wondering why our phones didn’t work. Put credit on your phone at a Topup or Telekom store. Once you have credit, you have to purchase Data or voice credit. *121# will give you your credit balance. *155# will take you to options to buy data, etc. They have special data plans. We’ve bought “Red Hot Giga Specials” for $30 sd for 3GB, valid for 7 days. Once your plan has run out, it will chew through your credit very quickly if you don’t purchase a new plan. We usually topped up well before the data has run out.
FOOD/PROVISIONING HONIARA There is a small supermarket in Honiara, which is halfway between the airport and the yacht club. Taxis are easy to flag down. The supermarket has a reasonable selection of food, and there is also a Bulk Shop within walking distance of Point Cruz. The Market is great for fruit and veg. Get used to powdered milk, as there is not much of a dairy industry here!! Outside of Honiara, the only other reasonable provisioning is in Noro and Gizo.
NORO Noro is the hub for the Solomon Island fishing fleet, it has a reasonable Market, a BSP ATM. It also has one of the best shops outside Honiara for Western foods, Muzi Boku, or otherwise known as the Blue Container shop. It has food straight from Australia and they take VISA. Noro is also a Port of Entry and has one of the most accommodating immigration officers I have ever met. You can get gas bottles refilled here.
SECURITY We’ve found the Solomon Islands to be very friendly and have never felt unsafe. Just take normal precautions, such as not leaving stuff out that could invite theft and possibly leaving a deck light on if you have concerns about an area.
BOAT PARTS Parts are pretty hard to come by unless you want them for a Yamaha or Suzuki outboard. We have been using Pacific Air Cargo. They have a depot in Brisbane and will arrange to fly parts to Honiara, Gizo, etc. The owners of Pacific Air Cargo and Sanbis Resort are good friends, which makes this process seamless. From parts arriving with PAC in Brisbane to pick up at Sanbis Resort is generally a week to 10 days. You can send multiple packages to the Brisbane depot from different sources, and they will pack them all into one package and forward on to you. They organise all customs clearance, etc. Other cruisers we know have also said good things about DHL.
FAVOURITE ANCHORAGES There are heaps of really amazing anchorages in the Solomon Islands. Here are a few of our favourites:
MAROVO LAGOON Mbilli Passage 8° 39.834S | 158° 11.238E SAND GREAT HOLDING WELL PROTECTED
There is a nice family on Tambapeava Island who will show you the WW2 Bomber. Expect will be approached by carvers. Sevae Island 8° 35.204S | 158° 8.287E SAND GOOD HOLDING NOT VERY PROTECTED
Another really nice family own this island. They will make themselves known. There are carvers in the area. Image: Peter, the owner’s grandson, with Sevae in the background. Mbatuna Village 8° 33.466S, 158° 7.434E MUD/SAND GOOD HOLDING
Market day is Thursday and starts at about 7 am. Really friendly locals. Chinese shop in adjacent bay selling good fishing lures.
Matui Island (Sarumara Anchorage) 8° 29.694S | 158° 8.930S SAND GREAT HOLDING VERY WELL PROTECTED
Important to follow the directions for the approach (see inset below) BEST anchorage in Marovo Lagoon . You won’t get visited much.
FAVOURITE ANCHORAGES RENDOVA ISLAND Lubaria Island 8° 24.183S | 157° 18.731E SAND GREAT HOLDING VERY WELL PROTECTED
The bay is about 30m deep and gets shallow quickly around the sides. We dropped the anchor in about 18-20m, backed into the shore and tied off to a coconut tree. In doing so, we faced the prevailing wind and didn’t need to worry about pulling the anchor out if the wind changed. The Island is owned by a man close to 80 called “Nicely” he really lives up to his name. This is where JFK’s patrol boat was stationed during WW2. There is a memorial here. Awesome swimming. However, there are some crocs in the area. Nusaghele 19° 946.S | 157° 11.512E ANCHOR IN SAND GREAT HOLDING GREAT PROTECTION FROM THE SE
This is one of our favourite spots, with reasonable internet coverage Excellent snorkelling and Manta rays in the area. Fan corals and bombies in the anchorage. Noro is a well-protected dinghy ride away, which takes about 25 mins at 12-15 knots. Munda is about 20 minutes away by dinghy.
FAVOURITE ANCHORAGES ARNAVON ISLANDS Kerehikapa Island 7° 27.551S |158° 1.585E ANCHOR IN APPROX. 20M OUTSIDE THE R ANGER’S BUILDINGS. EXCELLENT HOLDING. NOT WELL PROTECTED FROM SE .
There are fees to stay here, including anchorage fees and a park entry fee. When we stayed, it was $100 SD per night and $80 SD per adult to enter the park. There are also costs associated with the various activities you can do with the rangers. Cigarettes are also good currency! The turtle sanctuary is amazing. The Rangers are incredibly knowledgeable and patient. We saw turtles laying, turtles hatching, turtles being tagged, crocodiles and heaps more. A must-visit spot!! The diving and fishing in this area are also very good.
GIZO Gizo is the second largest town/ city in The Solomons. It has a good market and lots of Chinese shops. You can anchor outside the Market or further in opposite the fuel dock. It has a BSP ATM. You can buy most things here. The best internet is in The Telekom shop, where you can buy Wi-Fi based on time, and you can actually upload movies from here. We generally anchor outside Sanbis Resort and take the dinghy into Gizo, and leave it outside the Market.
FAVOURITE ANCHORAGES GIZO Sanbis Resort with Gizo in the background
8° 6.864S | 156° 52.933E ANCHORING IN CORAL!!! NOT THE BEST…….
Generally, we drop the anchor in 13m directly out from the resort and back up parallel to the shore. It is a tricky anchorage; we always attach a buoy to a trip line on our anchor. Lots of banana boats coming and going. They have a full-time dive instructor and do great Pizzas. It’s well worth the visit. Hans, the Swiss owner, is really helpful.
VELLA LAVELLA Liapari Island 56°.731S |156° 42.765E EXCELLENT ANCHORAGE GREAT HOLDING GOOD PROTECTION
Satellite images are required to make the initial entrance. Our Garmin charts were appalling. Once in, follow the channel markers. It gets quite shallow through the inner pass at low tide. This is the only place in the Solomons where you can comfortably leave your boat for any length of time. We left Brave here for 5 months. Good mechanics are available, and an excellent workshop. Haul out slip. This is a really sociable, nice spot.
FAVOURITE ANCHORAGES Supato Village 7° 51.481S |156° 35.591E GOOD HOLDING IN SAND, A LOT MORE PROTECTED THAN IT LOOKS
This is a very friendly village with inquisitive kids. One of our all-time favourite's favourite anchorage with great diving close by. The Lewis family are still ‘out there’ cruising. At the time of sharing this article in AHOY Sailing, they were in Thailand. You can follow their adventures and read their blog at:

REMEMBER GOOD OLD-FASHIONED SERVICE? That is what you will find at our chandlery, Australian Boating Supplies. Dave and Helen brought Australian Boating Supplies (ABS) about 15 years ago when it was located at the front of Gold Coast City Marina, part of the Gold Coast Marine Precinct. Since then they expanded to shed F31, and again into shed C17 which is right next to the boom gates and has substantially increased the range of boating and marine products. Having raised their family in Canberra, they moved to Queensland, purchased the chandlery and Tropical Sunset a Seawind 1160 and boating became a large part of the family's lives. For many years Dave, Helen, Danielle, Michael and Emma holidayed and sailed between the Gold Coast and far north Queensland on Tropical Sunset. During this time they tried and tested many of the products currently stocked in the shop and can provide advice and knowledge based on their own experience.
The Hutcheson family and the staff at ABS have extensive boating experience and really do enjoy helping you with your chandlery needs. We look forward to welcoming you IN-STORE Monday to Friday 8 AM – 4:30 PM Saturday 8:30 AM -12:00 PM, OR by phone or online when it suits you
