The Eileen & Herbert C. Bernard Collection Doyle is honored to auction works of art from The Eileen & Herbert C. Bernard Collection. This remarkable collection was assembled by Eileen (1916-1999) and her husband Herbert (1912-2016) during the course of their 65-year marriage. A Brooklyn native, Herbert received an excellent public school education and graduated with highest honors from his high school while working for The Brooklyn Eagle covering sports. He entered Columbia University in 1928, but to his great regret, had to leave to contribute to the support of his family. The owner of a successful manufacturing business, he had clients throughout the City and watched neighborhoods change over time. He remembered when horse-drawn carriages filled the streets and veterans of the Civil War paraded in their uniforms on Memorial Day. On his way to a dance in the Plaza Hotel’s Grand Ballroom, young Herbert caught sight of a lovely young woman on the hotel steps, and knew in that instant she would become his wife. Brooklyn-born Eileen was a woman of exquisite beauty and incomparable grace, exceeded only by her internal capacities for thoughtfulness and devotion. She loved ballet, good music, opera, travel, stimulating lectures, museums and being a hostess. She gave, with great flair, legendary parties in their gracious home – a Park Avenue penthouse decorated by Billy Baldwin and surrounded by expansive terraces. Baldwin later collaborated with Jacqueline Kennedy on the redecoration of the White House.

THE COLLECTION OF

BENNETT & JUDIE WEINSTOCK Doyle is honored to offer the contents of the New York apartment of the Philadelphia-based interior designers, Bennett and Judie Weinstock. Architectural Digest’s AD 100 Honorees in 2002 and 2010, the husband and wife team have been collectors throughout their entire marriage of almost fifty years. They both come from ceramics-collecting families, which is evident in their impressive collection of 18th century Chelsea porcelain and Meissen, Paris Porcelain and Dutch Delft ceramics. A profile of the Weinstocks and their New York apartment appeared in the April 29, 2011 edition of the New York Social Diary. Among the illustrations was a photograph by Jeffrey Hirsch of the Weinstock’s elegant dining room (see opposite), which reflects the designers’ extravagant use of pattern and color. A tour of the apartment reveals exquisite porcelain displayed in Edwardian painted satinwood cabinets, on Chinese export lacquer tables, Regency tôle tray tables, bedside tables and even kitchen shelves, each piece telling a unique story of its manufacture, and where in the world it was acquired for this remarkable collection. Property from the Collection of Bennet and Judie Weinstock comprises lots 132 through 328A and offers a wide range of exceptional ceramics, elegant furnishings, stylish decorations and American and Continental paintings, all collected with the discerning eyes of true connoisseurs.

243 George II Irish Needlework Upholstered Walnut Wing Chair Circa 1740 The arched padded backrest, sides and seat covered in multicolored floral gros point on a red background, raised on cabriole legs joined by a shaped flat stretcher and ending in faceted feet. Provenance: Alistair Sampson Antiques Ltd., London Irish wing armchairs are fairly rare but the present chair, with its flat stretcher and faceted feet are characteristic features of chairs from Ireland. An interesting parallel can be drawn between furniture made in Ireland and furniture made in Philadelphia, a distinction made by David Stockwell of Wilmington, Delaware, in an article in The Magazine Antiques, March 1961, p. 269, upon which Desmond FitzGerald, The Knight of Glin, elaborated in another article, ‘Irish mahogany furniture: a source for American design?’, The Magazine Antiques, April 1971, pp. 568-573. The reason for this parallel is that many Irish Quakers moved to Philadelphia in the late 17th to the mid-18th centuries and influenced furniture design in the American Colonies’ largest city. An Irish wing chair with a similar flat stretcher, originally thought to be American, is in the collection of the Henry Francis du Pont Winterthur Museum, illustrated, The Knight of Glin and James Peill, Irish Furniture, 2007, pp. 110-111, fig. 145 C Property from the Collection of Bennett and Judie Weinstock $5,000-7,000 See Illustration 244 Continental Polychrome Painted and Parcel Gilt Four-Panel Leather Screen Each shaped panel depicting three identical scenes of a woman holding a flower within a cartouche flanked by angels holding a crown above, with mystical beasts below.
