LÊ PHỔ GLOBAL REACH
Lê Phổ (August 2, 1907 - December 12, 2001) was a French-Vietnamese painter best known for stylized landscapes, floral still lifes and elegant figural paintings. Born in Hanoi, Vietnam, he studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Hanoi before attending the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris on a scholarship in 1932, studying under Victor François Tardieu. After exploring Europe and traveling to Beijing, the artist settled in Paris permanently in 1937.
Inspired by the work of Pierre Bonnard and Pierre Puvis de Chavannes, Lê Phổ developed a modern painting style characterized by a short touch and an unprecedented liveliness of tones directly borrowed from French movements such as Impressionism. At the same time, the artist’s oeuvre is a visual celebration of Vietnamese history. Many of his paintings reflect nostalgia for turn-of-the-century Hanoi, especially the ethereal style with which he depicted Vietnamese women.
With influences spanning Eastern and Western artistic traditions, Lê Phổ is uniquely positioned in the secondary market to attract buyers from every region – from his native Vietnam to the United States and back again. Lê Phổ’s gallerists in France and the United States cultivated American collectors, and as a result many of his works ended up in North America. As demand from Asian collectors continues to rise, the American and European markets are picking up speed.
Doyle is honored to have achieved outstanding prices for works by Lê Phổ throughout the past year. With buyers in over 90 countries, Doyle's global reach allows us to access collectors in every market – resulting in competitive bidding for artists like Lê Phổ and many more from throughout history.

Adams Museum Set Achieves $1.2 Million
An Ansel Adams Museum Set that achieved $1.2 million highlighted Doyle’s auction of Photographs on December 14, 2017. This was the first time a set had been offered with the permission of The Ansel Adams Gallery and the artist’s grandson, Matthew Adams. Legal restrictions generally prevent sales of Museum Sets.
Ansel Adams (1902-1984) was the preeminent 20th century photographer of Western landscape and a founder of the influential Group f.64, which included such luminaries as Edward Weston and Imogen Cunningham.
Prepared several years before Adams’s death, this Museum Set of seventy-five images is among the most comprehensive known to exist. Such sets more typically consist of twenty-five to fifty images. The Museum Sets contain as their nucleus ten of the most famous Adams images: Moonrise, Hernandez, New Mexico 1941; Mt. Williamson from Manzanar; Aspens, Northern New Mexico; Winter Sunrise, the Sierra Nevada; Monolith, the Face of Half Dome; Clearing Winter Storm, Yosemite; Sand Dunes, Sunrise, Death Valley; Tenaya Creek, Dogwood, Rain; The Tetons and Snake River, Grand Teton National Park; and Frozen Lake and Cliffs, the Sierra Nevada. There were a further sixty prints that could be purchased as part of a set. Those few who purchased all seventy received five additional prints: the majestic 1940 Surf Sequence
Spanning Adams’s entire career, this offering included all the artist’s best-known work, in prints of scrupulous quality prepared in Adams’ workshop under his direct supervision and signed by him. This Museum Set, acquired by a private collector from Adams in the 1980s, was donated to The College of New Rochelle in 2012 and was offered for sale on their behalf.
