A PRIVATE COLLECTION OF IMPORTANT DESIGN / SEPT 17
A Private Collection of Important Design will highlight the September 17 Doyle+Design auction. Spanning the late 19th century through the third quarter of the 20th century, the furniture and decorative arts offered in this exceptional collection include important examples of early Modernism in America and Europe. An armchair designed by Scottish architect Charles Rennie Mackintosh (1868-1928) was commissioned in 1897 by Catherine Cranston for the Billiards and Smoking Rooms of the Argyle Street Tea Rooms in Glasgow (est. $40,000-60,000). A console table by American architect Frank Lloyd Wright (1867-1959) was probably made for Taliesin East, Spring Green, Wisconsin, prior to the 1914 fire (est. $30,000-40,000). The console was inherited by Wright’s granddaughter, Nora Wright Natof. Other designers and craftsmen represented in this remarkable collection include Charles Rohlfs, Harvey Ellis for Gustav Stickley, Dard Hunter for the Roycroft Workshops, Peter Voulkos, Josef Hoffmann, Joseph Maria Olbrich, Richard Riemerschmid, Henry van de Velde, Loetz, Albin Müller, Gerrit Rietveld and Marcel Breuer (see page 8).

THE ESTATE OF BARBARA WAINSCOTT / OCTOBER 16 AND OTHER DATES
Doyle is honored to auction property from the Estate of Barbara Wainscott (1947-2018) as a highlight of the Fall season. Educated, cultured and an expert on international protocol, Barbara counted presidents, prominent figures of society and commerce, and members of the British Royal family among her circle of friends. While Palm Beach and New York were her homes, she was also a familiar face at the White House, Newport, Royal Ascot, the French Open and NFL Super Bowls. In her 20s, Barbara launched a successful lifelong career in protocol, public service and philanthropy, which included positions with the Nixon White House and the Bicentennial Commission, as well as later work with Prince Philip’s charities and The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award Foundation. She bred horses with Britain’s Highclere racing group, and with her late husband, attorney David Berger, was a founding member of The Royal Ascot Racing Club. Barbara’s sophisticated eye for beauty and quality is evident in her exceptional collection of jewelry to be offered on October 16 (see page 6), and art, silver and furniture to be offered throughout the Fall. Jewelry highlights include a Fancy Yellow diamond and diamond ring.
READ ALL OVER: ART FROM THE PATRICIA AND DONALD ORESMAN COLLECTION / NOV 20
Lifetime lovers of literature, Patricia and Donald Oresman designed their home on Central Park South to accommodate their growing collection of art and their expansive library of books. Not surprisingly, their remarkable collection focuses on literature, depicting readers, writers and journalists in a variety of mediums, including paintings, drawings, prints and photographs. Roy Lichtenstein’s (1923-1997) color relief print, Nude Reading, highlights his comic strip-inspired Ben-Day dot technique (est. $60,000-$90,000). The selection of drawings features a delicate pencil sketch, Reading Woman, circa 1907, by Gustav Klimt rendered in his sublime Art Nouveau style. Notable photographs include an image from the Arthur Rimbaud in New York series by David Wojnarowicz, whose works are on view at the Whitney Museum of American Art (see inside back cover). Among the other artists represented in this extensive collection of over 500 works are Milton Avery, Aaron Bohrod, Marc Chagall, Lucien Freud, Alberto Giacometti, Rockwell Kent, Kathe Kollwitz, Jacob Lawrence, René Magritte, Henri Matisse, Alexander Rodchenko, George Tooker and Andy Warhol. ASIAN WORKS OF ART / SEPT 10
Works of art in miniature, Chinese snuff bottles are collected for their intricate beauty and variation of design and color. Property from a number of private collections and the Estate of Mary Ann Bresee offers examples dating from the 18th to 20th centuries in a range of mediums. Japanese Satsuma porcelain, once an Imperial ware, is now prized by collectors. Produced during the Meiji Era, this covered vase is large and robust, and beautifully painted in gold and colored enamels with images of Arhats (est. $3,0005,000). It is a highlight from an extensive collection of Satsuma porcelain and Japanese bronzes in the sale.
ART AT DOYLE DOYLE+DESIGN® / SEPT 17
Irene Rice Pereira’s (1902-1971) earliest paintings were strongly influenced by industry and the machine age. Through her relationship with the Museum of Non-Objective Painting in New York, where she showed and worked, Pereira’s influences grew to incorporate Mondrian’s neo-plastic concepts and the pure abstract works of Wassily Kandinsky and the Bauhaus school. Progression of Reds is a fine and characteristic example of Pereira’s work at the pinnacle of her unique style (est. $5,000-7,000).

ART AT HOME / SEPT 26 & DEC 5
Documenting the energy of New York City life over many decades, Theresa Bernstein (1890-2002) was a pioneering American modernist influenced by the teachings of Robert Henri. Moving from Realism to a more Expressionist technique, Bernstein exhibited along with contemporaries like John Sloan and Edward Hopper in an art world still resistant to women artists. She continued to produce for most of her life, which spanned 111 years. Brownstone Stoops will be offered on September 26 (est. $1,500-2,500). The popular Doyle at Home auctions offer a wide range of artworks with moderate estimates.

Employing common everyday materials, Tony Feher (1956-2016) created beautifully simple objects as a reminder of our temporal nature. Feher used glitter and spray paint to create Green Blacktop, transforming a simple cardboard box into an abstract object, both mysterious and sublime (est. $2,000-4,000). The Doyle Next timed online-only auctions hosted on Artsy.net offer originals and editions by established and emerging artists. Dates in Sept, Oct and Nov to be announced.

AMERICAN PAINTINGS / OCT 3
A native of Philadelphia, William Trost Richards (1883-1905) studied with such noted landscape painters as Paul Weber and William Stanley Haseltine and exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. He traveled widely and painted and sketched the landscapes of the Adirondacks and the coasts of New England, as well as Germany, Italy and France. Stormy Seas with Whitecaps from 1904 is a superb example of the late coastal scenes for which he is best known (est. $100,000-150,000).

FINE PAINTINGS / OCT 10
Roger Medearis (1920-2001) studied under Thomas Hart Benton at the Kansas City Art Institute and was a rising figure in the Regionalist movement until his career was interrupted by World War II. His works executed after the War were seen as out of step with the contemporary artistic trends, and he abandoned painting until the 1960s. My Father’s House from 1972 is a beautiful example of Medearis’ work from this last stage of his career (est. $6,000-8,000).

FINE MODERN ART / OCT 17
Chicago artist Gertrude Abercrombie (1909-1877) is most often associated with the American Surrealist movement, which was not as formal as the European movement led by André Breton and his Surrealist Manifesto. Abercrombie was primarily self-taught and had few affiliations guiding her aesthetic choices, but her admiration for the works of such greats as René Magritte is apparent in her own paintings such as Man with Gloves on a Road (est. $2,000-4,000).

PRINTS & MULTIPLES / OCT 22
The human face was one of Pablo Picasso’s (1881-1973) most popular subjects. In Visage en Gros Relief (Face in Thick Relief), a painted and partially glazed white ceramic dish from 1959, Picasso employed an unconventional tool, likely a kitchen knife, to cut into a plaster mold, from which impressions could be taken to create editions (est. $6,000-8,000). Cyril Edward Power (18721951) is one of the most prominent artists associated with the Grosvenor School led by Claude Flight, who championed the 20th century linocut technique. Flight and his followers sought to depict the dynamism of city life and the speed of the machine age. From the Estate of Felice Ross is Merry-Go-Round, a circa 1930 linocut by Power that brilliantly captures the vitality and energy of the fun-fair (est. $20,000-30,000).
OLD MASTER PAINTINGS / OCT 31
Jean-Jacques Lagrenée’s (1739-1821) polished rococo style and Classical subjects were immensely popular in France both during the reign of Louis XVI and after the Revolution. Here he has depicted a lovely young girl, representing Innocence, enthralled by Cupid, but at the same time embraced by a motherly figure of Prudence, who shows her the world as it is – not the idealized fantasies of love – in a mirror. It is one of two allegorical works by the artist in the sale (est. each $15,000-25,000). Eugène Delacroix (1798-1863) is noted for his expressive brushwork, which embodies the Romantic approach to painting. This affectionate portrait of the artist’s nephew Charles-Étienne de Verninac, probably painted in late 1825 or early 1826, offers a vivid example of Delacroix’s early bravura technique (est. $300,000-400,000).

IMPRESSIONIST & MODERN ART / NOV 7
Depicting his native town of Le Havre, France, Jean Dufy (1888-1964) deftly employed perspective to illustrate the busy port teaming with sailing vessels rendered in his candy-colored palette. A forest of tall masts fills the foreground, with sails dotting the background in violets and soft blues (est. $15,000-25,000). Reginald Marsh (1898-1954) studied art at Yale and at the Arts Students League where he took classes from John Sloan, George Luks and Kenneth Hayes Miller. Like his father, the artist Frederic Dana Marsh, Reginald became a chronicler of urban life. Burlesque Show is a wonderful depiction of the city’s tawdry side that he celebrated (est. $30,00050,000).
POST-WAR & CONTEMPORARY ART / NOV 7
Studying under influential artist and educator Josef Albers, Op-Art master Richard Anuszkiewicz (b. 1930) explored the juxtaposition of bright, punchy colors and hard-edged painting. Dated 1970, Lino Yellow (318) is a prime example of his geometric abstraction and intense color palette (est. $30,000-50,000). From Richard Hambleton’s (1952-2017) series of “Rodeo” paintings, a subject he returned to throughout his career, this 2016 example showcases the power of his fluid gesture. Hambleton’s abstract forms capture the kinetic energy of a horse and rider in motion, bucking and thrashing violently across the canvas (est. $40,000-60,000).

PHOTOGRAPHS / DEC 13
Among Robert Mapplethorpe’s (1946-1989) most popular subjects are his masterful still lifes with flowers, such as the large-format photogravure, Irises, edition of 27, from the Collection of Anne Horton, a pioneering expert in photography during its formative years as an auction house category (est. $20,000-30,000). The Collection also features works by such photographers as Baron Adolf de Meyer and Norman Parkinson and inscribed photographic literature.

David Webb’s animal bracelets first appeared in 1957, and their popularity has never waned. An elephant bangle enhanced with a cabochon emerald and diamond crown cleverly wraps his trunk around a pavÊ-diamond loop (est. $15,000-20,000). Also by Webb is an Indian-inspired bangle of fluted nephrite with ruby and diamond caps (est. $6,000-8,000).

DOYLE+DESIGN / SEPT 17

A pioneer of Modern furniture design, architect Marcel Breuer (1902-1981) studied at the influential Bauhaus and later joined its faculty, directing the furniture workshop. In the mid-1930s he moved to London where he designed a number of iconic pieces for the Isokon Furniture Company, including the Model BC 01 Long Chair of 1935/36, considered one of the highlights of inter-War Modernism (est. $8,000-12,000). It is among the rarities to be offered in a Private Collection of Important Design (see pg 1). Made by Tiffany Studios in the early part of the 20th century, the Alamander lamp is a rarely encountered model. This rare and
distinctive reticulated bronze base, into which Favrile glass was blown through the voids, is described as “Pineapple” in the firm’s 1906 price list, which listed the base at $80 (est $50,000-70,000). It is one of a group of Tiffany lamps and sconces to be offered. Designed in 1952 by Henning Koppel (1918-1981) for silversmith Georg Jensen, the #1017 four-piece sterling silver tea set embodies Danish silver design at its most sublime. The teapot was awarded the Gold Medal at La Trienniale di Milano in 1954 (est. $10,00015,000). Also offered is the matching tray (est. $6,0008,000). French designer Jean Royère (1902-1981) redefined luxury in the 1950s with his avant-garde
designs that combined whimsy and elegance. His “Persane” patinated metal wall sconces embody the organic shapes and sculptural sensibilities that are the hallmarks of his best work (est. pair $30,000-50,000).
AMERICAN FURNITURE & DECORATIVE ARTS / OCT 3 An American silver covered tankard was made circa 1855 by H.B. Stanwood & Co., which operated a luxurious silverware and jewelry establishment in Boston. This fine George III mahogany serpentine dressing chest of drawers bears known features of Chippendale’s oeuvre, including the excellence of design, timbers and constructional features of the red wash to the underside, as well as the laminated construction of the blocks behind the feet (est. $5,000-7,000).

HISTORY AT DOYLE
COINS, BANK NOTES, POSTAGE STAMPS & MEDALS / OCT 22 In March 1793 the United States Mint struck the first copper coin, known as the Chain Cent. An unpopular coin at the time, it was replaced after a mintage of only one month (est. $12,000-15,000). The 1927 Russian Surcharge with Watermark was printed originally with 2mm spacing between lines. Due to a minor shift, a Major error was created: the much scarcer .75mm spacing. This example of Scott 350b, Never Hinged, was hand stamped by P. Buchsbayew (est. $7,000-10,000). The United Stated Flying Eagle design was debuted in May, 1857. Thus the 1856 coin is actually a pattern

or trial. Due to the limited mintage of approximately 2,000 strikes, it is a very scarce coin (est. $5,000-7,000). During the height of the California Gold Rush as miners panned for the elusive yellow ore in the hopes of striking it rich, private assay companies were developed to strike coins for use in these isolated areas. Hungarian immigrants Count Samu Wass and A.P. Molitor established the gold-smelting and assaying plant of Wass, Molitor & Co., where they struck coins between 1852 and 1855, including this rare 1855 $50 (est. $30,00040,000). Produced by Gorham silversmiths, the United States 1895 Cotton States and International Exposition Silver Medal awarded to Mrs. Henry Monk is a numismatic rarity (est. $2,500-3,000).

In a burst of artistic creativity in late summer 1978, David Hockney created a series of large format works known as Paper Pools, in which dyed paper pulp was pressed into prepared colored sheets, imitating the iridescent effects of light on the surface of water. The technical achievement of these works, which required new printmaking techniques, are celebrated as some of Hockney’s finest, and their creation was the subject of this 1980 limited edition, issued with an original color lithograph signed by the artist, now one of the most desirable artist books of the period (est. $10,000-15,000).

MAY I COME IN?
THE CITY’S MOST MEMORABLE ROOMS
A CONSTANT THREAD
THURSDAY, DEC 13 / 6:30PM
WEDNESDAY, NOV 7 / 6:30PM
WEDNESDAY, DEC 5 / 6:30PM
New York City is the epicenter of interior design innovations, and who better to give us a tour of the city’s best residential spaces, past and present, than Wendy Moonan. The interiors profiled in her new book, New York Splendor: The City’s Most Memorable Rooms (Rizzoli), range from very grand to starkly modern to eclectic, all are exceptional and unforgettable! Wendy Moonan has been writing about architecture, design and antiques for 30 years for such publications as The New York Times, Town & Country, House & Garden and Architectural Digest.
Style icon and lifestyle maven, Carolyne Roehm has been a part of American design culture for more than four decades, with a storied career spanning the world of fashion, decorative arts, gardening, entertaining and publishing. In her thirteenth book, Design & Style: A Constant Thread (Rizzoli), she shares for the first time lessons from her life in style – from her small town Missouri childhood to her New York fashion career that began with Oscar de la Renta and culminated with her eponymous line, to her role as an author, hostess and tastemaker.
Over a career spanning 30 years, Wendy Goodman has discovered an astonishing array of private houses notable for their character, personality and flair. In her latest book, May I Come In? Photo: Patrick Demarchelier (Abrams), she invites us into seventy homes that capture and express their owners’ spirit and passions. It is an irresistible record of the art of living by one of its most astute observers. The author of The World of Gloria Vanderbilt and coauthor of Tony Duquette, Wendy Goodman has been New York magazine’s design editor since 2007.
