Jewelry at Doyle
The Mughal Empire of 17th and 18th century India is remembered for the sublime Taj Mahal built by Shah Jahan and for their mastery of floral cut gemstones, particularly emeralds. This impressive David Webb ring is set with a Mughal-inspired carved cabochon emerald of approx. 85.00 carats framed by a large gold and diamond encrusted setting. From the Estate of Beatrice Shorr. Est. $6,000-8,000. Colorful combinations of American gems reflect the collaboration of Louis Comfort Tiffany and renowned gemologist George Frederick Kunz, signaling a turn away from traditional jewelry at the end of the 19th century. This antique Tiffany pendant cross is set with lively, exquisitely matched bluish-green tourmalines from Maine accented by Montana sapphires. Est. $3,000-5,000. A striking Art Deco enamel, jade and diamond box by Tiffany & Co. reflects the influence of the Ballets Russes. The Paris-based ballet company’s exotic costume and stage designs captured society's imagination and initiated a dramatic shift to more colorful jewels and accessories. Property of a Marin County Collector. Est. $2,500-3,500. Fine Jewelry / Beverly Hills / May 22

Ever since Pierre Cartier introduced Indian carved jewels to Europe in the early 20th century, jewelers have looked to Asia as a source of inspiration. In 1981, David Webb introduced his ‘Ruby Mughal’ necklace inspired by the lavish jewelry of India’s princely Maharajahs. The Estate of Aileen Mehle. Est. $10,000-15,000. David Webb’s fresh take on traditional pendant earclips is evident in this glittering pair set with diamonds and yellow sapphires. The earclips are designed as three detachable tiers, the center tier composed of diamonds set in yellow gold, a frequent design element in Webb jewelry of the 1960s. The Estate of Aileen Mehle. Est. $20,000-30,000. Important Jewelry / April 27 The perfect accessory for a June wedding is this romantic heartshaped pendant-necklace with pavé diamond links by Barry Kieselstein-Cord. New York jeweler DAVID WEBB sought inspiration for his distinctive designs during frequent visits to the Museum of Natural History and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. While he designed in a wide range of forms, he is best known for his bold, sculptural animal-themed gold bangle bracelets often enhanced with diamonds, colored stones and enamel. A bangle designed as a mythological chimera of carved angel skin coral set with diamonds and emeralds highlights jewelry from the Anne R. Lichtblau Collection. Est. $30,000-40,000. Examples from the Estate of Aileen Mehle include an exotic elephant bangle set with diamonds and cabochon rubies and a gold and diamond bangle designed as two fearsome lions. This finely bound volume contains a collection of autographs of each American President from George Washington through Franklin D. Roosevelt. Est. $20,000-30,000. Other Presidential material in the sale includes an important letter signed by Thomas Jefferson on the state of American education in 1821, three Mexican War commissions signed by James K. Polk, a photograph of the White House signed by the seven Presidents from Nixon through G.W. Bush, and the eulogy delivered at the funeral of New York Mayor Ed Koch signed by Bill Clinton. A magnificent four-sheet map, Chatelain’s circa 1719 Carte Très Curieuse De La Mer Du Sud offers a grand depiction of California as a large island. Est. $12,000-18,000. In the same sale are five 17th and 18th century maps from the Estate of Donald Brenwasser that present the same geographical misconception. William Faden’s rare 1776 A Plan of New York Island pairs a map of the Battle of Long Island with a descriptive text. Samuel Augustus Mitchell’s 1846 pocket map A New Map of Texas, Oregon, and California encourages Western emigration and offers much interesting detail. First published in 1516, Sir Thomas More’s Utopia was a work of political philosophy, as well as a voyage of the imagination. This copy of the third edition was published in Basel by Froben, March 1518, and includes the second part, containing the first edition of More's Epigrams. Sir Thomas More later ran afoul of Henry VIII over the annulment of the King’s marriage to Catherine of Aragon and was beheaded in 1535. Est. $15,000-25,000. Rare Books, Autographs & Maps / April 26

In 1983, the New York Islanders became the only U.S. National Hockey League team to win four consecutive Stanley Cup Championships since 1927, eclipsed only by the Montreal Canadiens, and placing them seventh in the line of great dynasties. During the 1980 through 1983 seasons, they won 19 consecutive playoff series wins, an unparalleled feat in the annals of professional sports. The four Championship rings will be offered individually. Currency of the Confederacy is a reminder of a turbulent chapter in our nation’s h i s tory. While most of the notes were lost or destroyed, it appears that many of the pieces in this group were from caches of notes discovered after the Civil War and turned over to the Department of the Treasury, as is indicated by an accompanying letter. Est. $8001,200. United States ‘Large Cents’ as they are known were first issued in 1793, and production was continued until 1857. This 1856 example exhibits a slanting 5 variety. Due to the metal content, these issues did not survive well, and so this example in a Mint State 65 Red Brown shade is an unqualified exception. Est. $3,000-3,500. Dating to China’s Ming dynasty, this large-scale early note measures approx. 8 3/4 x 13 1/4 inches and was issued between 1368-1375. ART AT DOYLE George Romney (1734-1802) was the most important portraitist of late 18th century British society. He is best known for his many depictions of Emma Hamilton, Lord Nelson’s great love. This beguiling portrait of Miss Mary Perryn is a splendid example of his work when he was at the height of his career. It remained in the family of the sitter until circa 1910, when it was acquired by the family of the present consignor. Property of Mrs. Paul Guth. Est. $20,000-40,000. Old Master Paintings / May 24

Frederick Sommer’s portrait of Max Ernst, taken in 1946, is his most emblematic image. Ernst and Sommer were friends, and the photograph began as a portrait against Sommer’s barn. A one-second image, Ernst’s chest moved slightly during the exposure. To counteract this subtle blur, Sommer juxtaposed a negative of a cement wall, taken in Prescott, Arizona, which had subtle seepage marks. The result of this double exposure is this masterful portrait of the Surrealist giant. Est. $20,000-30,000. Photographs / April 26 Born on the Normandy coast, Eugène Boudin (1824-1898) devoted his art to the sea and its harbors and beaches, with all of their nuances of light and color. This view of the harbor at Brest from the early 1870s shows his mastery of the subtle effects of light and atmosphere on an overcast day. Est. $50,000-70,000. In 1912 Joseph Raphael (1869-1950) moved to Uccle, in Belgium, with his new wife, a young Dutch woman he had met in the artist’s colony of Laren, where he had lived for several years. In Uccle he painted radiant views of his home and gardens, rendered in a vivid palette and broad brushstrokes. This work epitomizes Raphael’s work from the period, which earned him a silver medal at the 1915 Panama Pacific International Exposition. Property from a New York and Connecticut Estate. Est. $50,000-70,000. In 1890, when this lovely bronze was conceived, Auguste Rodin (18401917) was at the height of his heroic creative powers. That this artist – in the midst of his decades-long work on the epic Gates of Hell, and having recently completed his moving and tragic Burghers of Calais – was also capable of producing this exquisite essay in tenderness is a testament to his remarkable emotional range. Property of a Prominent New York Family. Est. $100,000-200,000. Impressionist & Modern Art / May 10 Seen as a key part of the American Pop Art movement, Tom Wesselmann (1931-2004) was a creative force very much following his own path. Aside from his use of commercial packaging and everyday objects in the language of his imagery, his women are the thread that flows from beginning to end of his career. In Study for Sunset Nude (Sitting), Wesselmann, as in many of his works, depicts the woman as an object within a still life. Est. $10,000-15,000. With its combination of bold text and folk-art inspired figures, Untitled (Pride) is a fantastic representation of Margaret Kilgallen (19672001) at her best. The work appeared in both her 1999 solo show at Deitch Projects and at her 2000 exhibit at the Hammer Museum, shortly before her tragic passing at 33 years of age. Est. $18,000-
Cheese Mold Standard with Olive is one of Ed Ruscha’s (b. 1937) most iconic images. Based on a photograph he made traveling from Los Angeles to his family home in Oklahoma City, Ruscha was drawn to the Standard Station’s “zoom architecture.” He transformed this ordinary subject into a monumental image in oil and screenprint, foreshortening the composition with his signature plunging diagonal line and drawing the viewer’s eye to the Standard text with its layers of meanings. Est. $50,000-70,000. Prints & Multiples / May 1 Nicholas Carone (1917-2010) was one of the last artists who comprised the generation known as The New York School. These artists, working in an abstract expressionist style, came to prominence in the early 1950s at a time when modernist art was strictly the realm of their European counterparts. This untitled drawing by Carone is a wonderful example of the artist’s expressive line that suggests luscious figurative forms, while not committing to representational imagery. Est. $2,000-3,000. Doyle is honored to auction jewelry from the Collection of a Pratt Family Lady. The Collection is highlighted by an exquisite circa 1930 Burma sapphire and diamond ring (left), approx. 14.92 carats. Rockefeller of Standard Oil and established Pratt Institute, and his son Herbert Lee Pratt (1871-1945) became head of Standard Oil in 1923. Est. $100,000-150,000. From the Property of a Lady is a sapphire and diamond ring set with a stunning sapphire of electric color (right), approx. 13.71 carats. Est. $150,000-250,000. Important Jewelry / April 27
