FALL HIGHLIGHTS EARLY PORTRAIT BY

EUGÈNE DELACROIX SOLD FOR $495,000 Highlighting the October 31 Old Master Paintings auction was an early portrait by the great Romantic master Eugène Delacroix (1798-1863) whose work was the subject of a recent exhibition at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Depicting the artist’s nephew, Charles de Verninac, the portrait attracted international attention that resulted in the strong price of $495,000, surpassing its estimate of $300,000-400,000. Painted in 1825-1826, when Delacroix was still a young man, the portrait already exhibits the virtuosity of brushwork that was a hallmark of his mature style. Somewhat restrained by the conventions of formal portraiture, it nevertheless shimmers with movement and subtle highlights.

MAP OF NEW ENGLAND CIRCA 1676

SOLD FOR $343,750 An exceedingly rare and early English map of New England dating to circa 1676 realized a stunning $343,750 at the November 13 auction of Rare Books, Autographs & Maps. Made by John Seller (1632-1697), Hydrographer to King Charles II, the map was the first depiction of New England not derived from Dutch prototypes. This facinating map combines several early English surveys and features an elaborate vignette with Indian dwellings from engraver Theodor de Bry and depictions of animals throughout reminiscent of those on American maps by Dutch cartographers Willem Blaeu and Nicolaes Visscher.

FABERGÉ KOVSH SOLD FOR $237,500 A Fabergé silver-gilt, cloisonné and enamel kovsh achieved $237,500 at the October 31 Russian Works of Art auction, far surpassing its estimate of $50,000-80,000. Consigned by a Connecticut Private Collection, the exceptional kovsh was painted en plein by workmaster Feodor Rückert with a detail of The Boyar after Konstantin Makovsky. Measuring seven inches in height, it was marked with Rückert’s workmaster’s mark, Moscow, 1908-1917. The kovsh is closely related to a Fabergé cloisonné enamel box painted with the same subject in the collection of the Hillwood Museum in Washington, DC.

THE ESTATE OF A GENTLEMAN WINTER & SPRING 2019

A highlight of the Winter/Spring 2019 season is property from the Estate of a Gentleman. This extensive collection of paintings, furniture and decorative arts from his elegant apartment on Park Avenue and his home in Southampton will be offered in a series of select sales. His collection of Russian silver and enamel salt thrones to be offered on January 30 features examples by the eminent Russian silversmiths Khlebnikov and Ovchinnikov. Used in the traditional Russian welcome ceremony of bread and salt, these popular salt thrones are elaborately decorated with native ornament and folk sayings. Featured in the Fine Modern Art sale on March 6 is a watercolor by British artist Malcolm Morley (1931-2018), who moved to New York in the late 1950s. Two Leopards expresses the gestural Neo-Expressionist style of his work in the late 1970s into the 1980s (est. $3,000-5,000). THE SPORTING ART COLLECTION OF JAMES W. SMITH FEB 13

DOYLE is honored to auction the Sporting Art Collection of James W. Smith (1941-2018), master breeder of Smooth Fox Terriers. Mr. Smith entered his first dog show in 1956, and by the time he was named Breeder of the Year in 2012 by the American Kennel Club, he had produced more than 50 champions, Best in Show dogs, national and regional specialty winners, and numerous group winners. An American Kennel Club judge and a delegate for 26 years, he was chairman of its board from 1994-95. He also was president of the Dalmatian Club of America and the American Fox Terrier Club, which honored him with a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2017. The collection assembled by Mr. Smith includes over 100 lots of paintings, sculpture, drawings, prints and books devoted to dogs, horses and sporting art. One highlight is an 1889 portrait of a Smooth Fox Terrier by Arthur Wardle (1864-1945) (est. $6,000-9,000) (see page 3).

Assembled over forty years beginning in the late 1960s, this remarkable collection reflects the personal and sophisticated taste of a true connoisseur. A highly educated and respected professional in clinical research, he was also a lifelong classical musician who played the piano and harpsichord for relaxation. His remarkable collection was acquired through purchases from E&J Frankel, Ltd. and other prominent dealers of Asian art. Highlighting the collection is a group of Buddhist gilt bronze sculptures dating from the 17th through the 20th centuries. An artistic tradition used mostly for religious purposes, Buddhist sculpture is highly prized for its beauty and historic significance. A gilt-bronze Tibetan Lama from the 18th century, his hands in the position of the Dharmachakra Mudra, represents one of the most important moments in the Buddhaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s life, preaching his first sermon after achieving enlightenment (est. $18,000-22,000). Symbolizing fidelity and happy unions, a duck-form gilt-bronze censer depicts the bird standing in water. When in use, smoke emits from both its open beak and a coin-shaped aperture at its rear, representing wealth and prosperity (est. $8,000-10,000).

OLD MASTER PAINTINGS

An important figure in early American modernism, Abraham Walkowitz (1878-1965) studied at the National Academy of Design in New York and the Académie Julian in Paris. While in Europe, he met the pioneering American dancer Isadora Duncan, who became a recurring subject of his drawings. The artist found his best expression in watercolor, a perfect medium for capturing Isadora’s fluid, graceful movement, as seen in these drawings from the Collection of Charlotte Bergman to be offered on January 16 (est. $800-1,200). The popular DOYLE at Home auctions offer a wide range of artworks with moderate estimates.

The Brooklyn-based artist Brendan Fagan (b. 1978) creates art under the alias Judith Supine, both illegal street wheatpastes as well as refined studio works. His pieces employ elaborate collages that show the influences of Surrealism and Dada (est. $1,500-2,500). The DOYLE Next timed online-only auctions offer originals and editions by established and emerging artists. Upcoming dates to be announced.

Michele Marieschi (1710-1743), like his fellow view-painters Antonio Canaletto and Giovanni Paolo Panini, began his career as a designer of theatrical sets. That training is clearly visible in his early easel paintings, of which these two architectural fantasies are prime examples. Already at this stage of his career, we can see the expressive, textured brushwork that is one of the signatures of his mature style (est. $30,000-40,000).

The art world will go to the dogs (and horses!) with the return of this popular auction category. Trained as a veterinary surgeon, British artist Adrian Jones (1845-1938) served as a veterinary officer in the Royal Horse Artillery for over twenty years, sculpting and painting horses in his spare time. His training and study of equine anatomy enabled him to depict his subjects with great accuracy and sensitivity, as seen in this 1891 work from the Collection of James W. Smith (est. $5,000-7,000) (see page 1).

Paul Wonner (1920-2008) was included in the exhibition, Contemporary Bay Area Figurative Painting, at the Oakland Museum of California in 1957, together with fellow artists Richard Diebenkorn and Theophilus Brown. Having studios in close proximity, the three would gather together for life-study sessions. The Model Before a Mirror from 1962 is a prime example of Wonner’s early work, executed in a realist style with broad expressive brushstrokes and an inventive use of color (est. $2,000-3,000).

Leon Kroll (1884-1974) was born in New York and studied at the Art Students League under John Henry Twachtman and at the National Academy of Design, later traveling to Paris to continue his studies at the Académie Julian. Likely painted in France prior to his return to New York in 1910, Landscape with Bridge reflects Kroll’s interest in the French Impressionists and Post-Impressionists (est. $6,000-8,000).

Thomas Moran (1837-1926) is one of America’s most revered artists of the western landscape. While at the height of his creative powers in the 1880s and 90s, he traveled to Venice. The views of that brilliant city would inspire him for the rest of his career. Property from the Estate of Joan Harmon Van Metre, this 1889 work captures the dramatic light and vibrant colors of Venice (est. $100,000-150,000).

Pablo Picasso (1881-1973) became entranced with the ceramic medium after visiting the Madoura pottery factory in 1946, and over the following 25 years he created more than 3,000 works there. In Visage aux Cheveux Bouclé (Curly-haired Face), 1968-69, from the Estate of Peter Mayer, Picasso explored one of his most compelling themes, the human face (est. $6,000-8,000).

British artist Bridget Riley (b. 1931) is one of the foremost proponents of Op Art. Created one year before the artist was featured in the seminal 1965 exhibition, The Responsive Eye, at the Museum of Modern Art, the screenprint Untitled (Based on a Blaze) is a fine example of Riley’s exploration of optical illusions suggesting movement (est. $8,000-12,000).

Emma Fordyce MacRae (1887-1974) attended the Art Students League where she trained under Frank Vincent DuMond, Kenneth Hayes Miller, and later with John Sloan. She was a member of the National Association of Women Artists. Central Park was one of her favorite themes, an example of which is this bright depiction of the zoo in Spring (est. $10,000-15,000).

Mark Tobey (1890-1976) is often associated with the Abstract Expressionist painters of New York. Although he was fully aware of the works of his peers, he arrived at his mature style creating works known as his White Writing paintings influenced by Asian calligraphy and Baha’i and Zen Buddhism. This 1954 painting from the Estate of Elizabeth B. Vondracek is a wonderful example of Tobey’s rhythmic patterning and energetic compositions that emanate a spiritual energy (est. $20,000-30,000).

Pat Steir’s (b. 1940) beloved series of “waterfall” paintings, which she began in the 1980s, were influenced by her relationship with the late John Cage, and his philosophy of chance in art. Steir’s interest in the role of time, environment and gravity allow her to explore the idea of removing the artist from the process of creating a work of art (est. $18,000-22,000).

a traditional Chinese symbol of strength and perseverance (est. $20,000-30,000). From the same collection is a group of early wares, featuring a Dingyao carved lotus dish

ENGLISH & CONTINENTAL FURNITURE & DECORATIVE ARTS JAN 30 Interested in saving the distressed mosaics of St. Mark’s Basilica in Venice, Antonio Salviati, a lawyer from Vicenza, founded a firm in 1859 that developed a process for the production of mosaics. In doing so, he saved the declining fortunes of the Venetian glass-making trade, resuscitating and energizing the industry. From the Estate of Marianne Schaller, this large micromosaic mirror from the late 19th/early 20th century exhibits the feats of those new processes, with panels depicting the lion of St. Mark and the Doge’s barge flanked by allegories of Summer and Autumn (est. $12,000-18,000). This George III mahogany library table is a fine example of furniture design that exemplifies the change in taste from the late 18th century, with its use of satinwood inlay, to early 19th century Regency pieces that were inlaid with ebony and exotic woods from India and other Asian countries (est. $10,000-15,000). Cómodas de sacristía, or chests of drawers made to store a priest’s vestments in a church’s sacristy, can be found throughout Latin America. This chest is a fine example of Cuban Baroque cabinet making, with its massive form, outset rounded corners, and boldly projecting foliate-carved feet. Each foot is made from a single piece of mahogany held in place by a wooden peg (est. $10,000-15,000).

A magnificent Russian silver-gilt and enamel box (est. $90,000120,000) highlights a wide range of Russian enamels, Fabergé and objets de vertu from a West Coast Private Collection. Produced by Feodor Rückert, arguably the most talented of all enamel artists in pre-revolutionary Russia, the box depicts A Knight at the Crossroads by the important Russian painter, Viktor Vasnetsov (1848-1926). Further highlights include an impressive silver tea service by Andrei Bragin, St. Petersburg, 1894, from a Philadelphia Private Collection (est. $25,000-45,000) and a group of silver and enamel salt thrones from the Estate of a Gentleman (see page 1).

A set of twelve chargers by noted London silversmith Gilbert Marks (1861-1905) from the Estate of Bruce C. Denton are richly chased with floral specimens in the best of Arts and Crafts tradition. Magazine articles of the period noted how Marks skillfully transferred flowers into silver on his works without the use of machinery. His short career produced beautifully artistic works which, as is the case here, are often signed by the artist himself (est. $25,000-35,000).

Ole Wanscher (1903-1985) drew on classic furniture design to create pieces that have come to represent great Danish Mid-Century design. Offered are eight of his T-Chairs from 1957 that combine beauty and functionality with their simple, clean lines and elegant form ( est. $15,000-25,000).

AMERICAN FURNITURE & DECORATIVE ARTS / MARCH 27 An American Aesthetic Movement table was made in the early 1870s by Herter Brothers in New York. Similar in form to an example in the Cleveland Museum of Art, the table combines Japanese-inspired structure and ornament with a fine floral marquetry top probably imported from Paris (est. $12,000-20,000).

In 1815, Samuel Kirk opened what has become America’s oldest silversmith. The firm created a style of intricate floral repoussé, known as “Baltimore Silver,” an early example of which is this 1828 tea service from a Connecticut Collector that incorporates birds and butterflies into the flowers and foliage (est. $7,000-10,000).

RARE BOOKS, AUTOGRAPHS & MAPS / APRIL 17 Charles Addams’s whimsical cartoon of a woman feeding a horde of miniature men was published in The New Yorker on December 1, 1975, one of two cartoons he prepared that month featuring tiny protagonists. This is the original pen and ink drawing, rendered for the magazine (est. $3,000-5,000). The Collected Poems of Dylan Thomas 1934-1952 (London: J.M. Dent, 1952) is one of 65 signed copies, in the blue morocco of issue. This copy belonged to Aneirin Talfan Davies, an early booster of Thomas. As Head of Programmes Wales at the BBC, Davies produced broadcasts of Thomas’ early works (est. $4,000-6,000). Julien David Le Roy’s impressive folio, Les Ruines des plus Beaux Monuments de la Grèce (first edition, Paris: 1758), was a foundational work in introducing Western Europeans to the architecture of classical Greece. It was the major source of the neo-Classical style. The first part of the work is finely illustrated with views of ruins, and the second part with plans and elevations of major sites (est. $6,000-9,000).

The most enduring of baseball novels, The Natural (first edition, 1952) was Bernard Malamud’s first published book and was also made into the classic film starring Robert Redford as slugger Roy Hobbs. This volume is offered as part of a group of ten volumes each inscribed by Malamud to close friends Suzanne and Paul Schrag and spanning 1952 to 1983, including The Fixer, The Assistant and others (est. $5,000-8,000).

CHRIS “DAZE” ELLIS MONDAY, MARCH 11 AT 6:30PM A lifelong New Yorker, Chris “Daze” Ellis emerged from the graffiti scene of the 1980s, ascending to worldwide fame with his vibrantly colored post-Pop depictions of the City and its disparate denizens.
