With a deep concern for the built environment, DP Design (DPD) offers interior design, space planning and branding strategy services. Over the years, they have delivered and presented a sterling international body of works such as Singapore’s Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay, Paragon Shopping Centre, HDB Hub, Singapore Stock Exchange, Orchard Central and Resorts World Sentosa, as well as overseas projects including the Dubai Mall, Cinemaxx Palembang Icon and its associated café chain Maxx Coffee, and the well-established investment bank UOB Kay Hian in Malaysia. The firm also has a hand in the interior design of Respublika Plaza Astana in Kazakhstan, a mixed development comprising retail, office and SOHO units. The design firm takes a holistic approach to interior spaces, a direct response to a building’s intrinsic architectural and formal relationships. At DPD, interior-architects create environments that seamlessly integrate people, architecture, technology and the ultimate purpose of the space. The practice at DPD, therefore, transcends superficial interior decoration. Its designs endeavour to preserve and enhance the natural behaviour of a building, working with project-specific materials, lighting conditions and planning techniques. In doing so, DPD works closely with the architects during building conception, playing a critical role in helping to layout and

plan the overall building so as to express and achieve specific internal conditions. Internal spaces of completed buildings, on the other hand, are re-examined and re-worked by DPD to achieve a functionality and personality that correspond with the existing architecture. And it is the intimate participation and exchange between DPD’s designers and architects during the formation of a building’s interior design that allow a building’s character and functionality to be realised to its fullest potential. Indeed, the result achieved strengthens a visitor’s likelihood of identifying with it. And while the firm supports DP Architects in achieving holistic design practices, it also takes on a collaborative approach with other reputable architects, though it remains highly selective over the type of projects it takes on. At DPD, every line and every corner is thoroughly thought through as they take pride in the results of this diligence, acquitting themselves as designers. DPD seeks to create spaces – spaces that are memorable, relevant and sustainable. Through a highly dedicated team of designers, they seek design opportunities that display their expertise and experiences, while challenging and inspiring their creative passions.

Green spaces are invaluable to the habitability and long-term sustainability of cities, often providing linkages and social collection points that strengthen urban fabrics. Holding this firm belief that architecture and landscape are inextricably linked, is DP Green (DPG). An interdisciplinary practice that comprises landscape architects, architects, designers, horticulturists and arborists, the landscape designs of DPG work towards producing a deep-seated sense of place by responding to a site’s natural
genius loci. Their goal is to realise project sites that are beneficial to the environment and for the people who use them. The group’s early involvement in projects facilitates the timely resolution of issues that will inform wellintegrated outcomes. The implementation of green deck spaces in particular can influence programmes at all levels, with a strong impact on spatial functionality and building sustainability. Shared roof gardens establish dynamic outdoor spaces of activity; and well-planned greenery and water features factor in heat gain, with the potential to reduce a building’s reliance on energy resources.

If architects were main artists in the composition of a built environment, then lighting specialist consultants, are the ones who lend subtle yet bold brushstrokes to the canvas of work. These brushstrokes incorporate the practical installation of lighting within the built environment. They also lend aesthetic nuances to the design so as to create mood, atmosphere and identity. Joining DP Architects and its group of companies, DP Lighting (DPL) offers a range of creative services from advice on specific lighting problems to comprehensive design implementation on projects of all sizes and project stages (covering concept to detailed design and completion). As architecturally trained designers that specialise in lighting systems, DPL professionals are in the unique position to work with architects, designers, artists, engineers, building developers, owners and end users to develop seamless lighting solutions for diverse architectural design issues. DPL’s approach to light is intuitive, recognising that natural daylight is not static and that changes in light quality and quantity are vital to our psychological perception and understanding of form and space. DPL instinctively understands that variation in light is important for human wellbeing as it stimulates senses on an emotional level as well as at a practical level. Its designs complement the way people perceive the ever-changing patterns of light and shade around them.

Having evolved into a full-fledged company, DP Sustainable Design (DPSD), is poised to take the green design process further than other industry leaders with its passionate and diverse team of architects, environmental engineers and building analysts. Each brings a store of knowledge and experience that equips DPSD with the expertise to handle complex design issues across a wide range of building projects. At the core of the company, the work goal of DPSD is straightforward: To deliver holistic and innovative sustainable design solutions that are environmentally, socially and economically responsive to local climatic conditions, site context and needs of the end-users. However, the DPSD green design process is not simply about green certification or harvesting renewable energy. It is about getting design fundamentals right from the outset of a project and optimising these through detailed design. And doing so requires a pragmatic way of designing that is steered by an integrated, iterative approach; supported by an evidence base of intelligent simulations and empirical data. This enables the team to ensure that the development of the green building system goes hand in hand with the overall concept design of the building.

Throughout this integrative and iterative process, DPSD takes on the role of design integrator. On the one hand, the DPSD team helps clients to define and facilitate their sustainability objectives. On the other hand, they capitalise on a well-established inhouse sustainable design process that starts from identifying the environmental constraints and strengths of a site for passive design features to be formulated to the translation of these climatic responsive design to corresponding enhancements in the active building engineering solutions. This holistic and synergetic design approach optimises the design, removes the guesswork and fully capitalises on the use of simulation tools and data analytics to deliver an environmentally sustainable design in a most effective and economical manner. Similar to consumers who have access to the fuel economy of a vehicle before they make an informed decision to make a purchase, simulation tools and data analytics will enable building owners to make informed decisions based on the energy performance of these design features and building systems. The values created in this design process include reducing oil dependence cost, mitigating climate change and increasing energy sustainability. Although DPSD operates as a standalone subsidiary, the key success factor for an optimised design is collaboration. DPSD has established a sustainable design process that provides a common platform for integration and optimisation of all building features and systems enabling them harmonise and synergise with one another. Services that DPSD provide include Bioclimatic Analysis, Sun-path Analysis, Solar Insolation Analysis, Building Aerodynamics and Ventilation Study, Daylight & Glare Analysis, Energy Modelling & Analysis, and Green Building Certification, Energy Performance and Management, Building Systems Commissioning.

Design intelligence is fundamentally design that is well informed by data analysis, thereby allowing design to be increasingly intuitive. This can manifest itself in the most common spaces. Here, on the new SIT campus at Singapore Polytechnic, visual comfort is an important aspect of the design. Glare analysis was undertaken at all key spaces internally to provide vital design inputs for the façade and roof light fenestration design and specification, effectively ensuring the most appropriate selection of materials.

With the SUTD project, data collected from daylighting and airflow analysis was used to achieve the most optimal faรงade design. Vision panels are designed as casement windows, offering occupants flexibility for natural ventilation. In strategic locations along the corridors, some openings are incorporated to allow for cross ventilation; and protrusions on the faรงade are provided to deflect traffic noise, mitigation noise propagation into the building.

AIRFLOW ANALYSIS Good outdoor space is defined by air flow and ample shading. To achieve this in Ciputra World Surabaya development, our team carried out a combination of CFD simulations and sun-path and shading analysis. The former allows us to determine good cross-ventilation and therefore, air-flow; which in turn informed the porous urbanscape of the mixeddevelopment. The latter enabled us to determine areas exposed to the sun across the day. The data then facilitated appropriate design of shading canopies that extend outwards from the building faรงades, especially for F&B areas. | 191

SUNPATH ANALYSIS
Sunpath analysis was conducted to help the architecture team understand the building shade on the open space so that children’s playground, pavilions, barbecue pits, swimming pools and other outdoor amenities can enjoy adequate shading when they are in use. The analysis also helps formulate the landscaping strategies to optimise green surface coverage to reduce the Urban Heat Island effect within the development. | 193
CFD STUDY: TEMPERATURE RISE WITHIN A LIGHTBOX
Data analytics were used effectively in the faรงade lightbox design at SBF center. Temperature rise within the light box is studied so that the correct temperature rating of the light fitting could be selected. This scientific approach ensures the proper functioning of the light fittings within the light box and at the same time reduces unnecessary malfunctioning of the faรงade lighting and maintenance issues.

SIT at Ngee Ann Polytechnic is designed as a high-performance building with emphasis on good quality daylighting for the classrooms and conducive naturally ventilated interaction spaces for the students. Daylighting simulations enabled the designer to strike a fine balance between natural lighting and solar heat gain in the classrooms. Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) simulations analysed the interaction of the building form with the prevailing wind, resulting in the building’s ‘H’ shape. The air-conditioned spaces within the building serve as ‘noise barriers’ to the naturally ventilated spaces which are sandwiched between. The linkways flanking these spaces provide effective barrier to wind-driven rain, ensuring that these spaces can be used effectively in all weather conditions.

Sustainable design should translate into pragmatic, cost-efficient solutions. To push for a self-sustaining residence, solar panels for air-conditioning were installed and double up as a skylight roof. Solar thermal collectors to power a DC hot water heater were also installed. With these measures, the client enjoys yearly savings of approximately $7,500 in energy and water usage, and carbon emission is reduced by an estimated five tonnes per year.
