TMAP MONITOR TMAP Donates to Yolanda Victims In one way or another, every Filipino was affected when the strongest tropical cyclone for the year (Yolanda or International codename: Haiyan) hit the Philippine territory on November 8, 2013. Super Typhoon Yolanda left a trail of devastation mainly in the Visayas region, which directly affected the lives of at least 9.8 million people based on the report of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council as of November 16, 2013.
To unite with the efforts of the government, private sector, international and local humanitarian organizations, TMAP has donated a total amount of Php100,000 from the Association’s funds to support the victims. The donation was coursed through the following institutions: Philippine National Red Cross, PLDT-TV 5 Foundation, Aboitiz Foundation, Inc., and Caritas Manila Inc. Continued on page 2

Social Media Activism and TMAP With all the talks about the Napoles Scam and the horrendous amount of taxpayers’ money that were allegedly siphoned through bogus NGOs, TMAP members were naturally interested on what is being done to run after the perpetrators of the scheme and how social media activism helped galvanize the Filipino netizens.
“Social media is an equalizer for ordinary people with no access to powerful mainstream media,” Peachy shares with TMAP. “We have to stop the padrino system,” she emphasized. “It is our right to demand that our government scrap pork, investigate pork spent and all this we want to do within the democratic system,” she underscored denying any reports that their group is antiContinued on page 2

TMAP-Ateneo Law School Partnership Projects Underway On June 26, 2013, TMAP signed a Memorandum of Agreement with the Ateneo Law School to establish a mutually beneficial partnership and cooperation towards the attainment of the following goals, among others: (1) improve the quality of tax education by jointly undertaking seminars, symposia, forums and round table discussions; (2) develop and update a tax library with TMAP selecting and donating books and materials needed in tax practice; and (3) establish an institutional presence of TMAP in the Ateneo and improve the awareness of students on the extent of tax practice in the Philippines. In line with those objectives, the TMAP-Ateneo partnership commenced with the holding last September 12, 2013 of a tax symposium entitled “Pursuing Taxation as Field of Law Practice in the Philippines” at the Justitia Room of the Ateneo Law School. The symposium was conducted with the objective of giving law students and eye opener to tax practice in the Philippines and to change their negative attitude to taxation as a law school subject and as a bar exam subject. TMAP invited the following speakers to share their experiences in tax practice: TMAP Past
November 2013 President Ma. Criselda B. Guhit, who shared her experience as an in-house tax counsel; Atty. James H. Roldan, as a tax lawyer in government service; Atty. Maria Lourdes P. Lim, as a tax lawyer in a Big 4 accounting firm; and Atty. Carlos G. Baniqued, as a tax lawyer in private practice. As the symposium was a resounding success, Dean Sedfrey Candelaria of the Ateneo Law School requested that the symposium be conducted on a regular basis. During the symposium also, distinguished TMAP members and law authors, led by TMAP Adviser Emeritus Florecita Flores, former CTA Presiding Justice Ernesto Acosta and TMAP Past Presidents Victorino Mamalateo and Benedicta DuBaladad, donated their authored books to the Ateneo Law School to kick-off the tax library. Accounting firms Isla Lipana & Co. and Punongbayan & Araullo also donated their publications on the Tax Code to the Ateneo. Among upcoming projects of the TMAPAteneo partnership is the introduction of an elective in the law school curriculum on tax practice where TMAP members who are also law professors will be co-teaching in time for school year 2014 – 2015.
Guest speakers Ms. Peachy Rallonza-Bretano and Atty. Michelle Estor posed with TMAP Board of Directos and Past president Atty. Cathy Manahan.
