THE GALLERY AT YORK HALL | 757.890.4490

Says gallery owner, Davie Burgdorf, “Compared to most other forms of art, folk and outsider art is affordable to collect and enjoy - and it all comes with stories! Most of our contemporary pieces are by local artists in many different styles and media. Some pieces are decorative and imaginative while others have a practical focus. Our vintage pieces are by folk art legends including the Rev. Howard Finster, Rev. R.A Miller, Mose Tolliver, Dr. Bob and Bennie Carter. Additionally, we also have a large collection of antiquated books – some more than 300 years old – and historic plates and engravings (e.g. first edition Audubon engravings) and historic maps from the 1700s and 1800s – an eclectic blend just like our personal collection. In addition, we also restore antiquated books and bind items such as playbills, dissertations, theses, etc.” On Saturday, May 23, Colonial Folk Art Studio & Gallery is proud to host the inaugural “Art in the ’Burg,” the Williamsburg Arts District Association’s newest venture to encourage the growth of art in the Arts District. Art in the ’Burg features local artists from the Historic Triangle and will be held every other Saturday beginning on May 23! As people visit Art in the ’Burg, Colonial Folk Art invites families to come into the studio and paint ceramic ornaments made in our studio. This is free (one ornament per person) and will be a fun souvenir to commemorate the weekend. On Sunday, May 24, Colonial Folk Art will have a potter’s wheel demonstration. This is a wonderful opportunity to see how this ancient art is done. It’s easy to learn the basics but very difficult to master!

LINDA C. MILLER | botanicalarttoday@yahoo.com www.lindacmillerbotanicalarttoday.com I was introduced to botanical art in 2008 after viewing original works by Maria Sibylla Merian, Alexander Marshall and Mark Catesby, on exhibit at Holyrood Castle in Edinburgh, Scotland. Upon returning home “A Passion for Plants” by Shirley Sherwood was featured in our new arrival section. Viewing the contemporary compositions and bold color spoke to me and started the journey. My early studies were of a single subject, a flower, a seed pod or a small branch. A view of nature I so enjoy to this day. Each year I grew, adding more leaves, adding more dimension, and even telling a plant’s life story. I have even painted a work over four feet tall. After painting over 100 portraits, large and small, I am honored to be “called” to paint from nature.

Linda Matney Fine Art is partnering with the Heritage Humane Society on Saturday, May 23, for Art Escape Weekend. Visitors to the gallery will have the opportunity to learn more about the work of the Heritage Humane Linda Mitchell | “I’ll Be Your Best Friend” Society. The gallery will be featuring the work of Linda Mitchell, and a portion of the sales of Mitchell’s work will benefit HHS. Mitchell’s works depict animals and “storybook” characters including a 10 foot tall Closet Monster. In this exhibition, which is titled, “Lucid Dreamer,” Mitchell gives rein to the subconscious and lets the stories unfold, much like a dreamer with partial awareness, she orchestrates her intuitive images to create compelling visual narriatives. The inner world bubbles up and gives rise to unexpected characters, elements and situations. Her high textured pieces are made with painted and photographic images, fabric, wood, glass and found objects. Also featured at the gallery during Art Escape Weekend and through May is an exhibition by local artist and teacher, Helen Lowery. The works feature her son and daughter and focus on childhood and motherhood. “I aspire to engage others through the subject of children, through the pattern of brushwork, and through the selection of color. I communicate movement, growth, change, transition, vibrancy, youth and newness, and I depict experiences and scenarios that anyone can identify with and reflect upon.

The New Town Art Gallery opened its doors to the public on June 29, 2010 with a gala opening attended by over 500 art lovers and friends. Occupying a beautiful, spacious premises with a delightful ambiance the gallery offers an ever-changing collection of fine art from locally- and regionally-renowned artists. The Gallery is a partnership of prominent local artists along with a number of rotating guest artists who exhibit by invitation. New Town Art Gallery has flourished by hosting a variety of cultural events with other arts-related organizations in our community to develop the performing and visual arts. At their receptions they also partner with community non-profit organizations to help raise funding and public awareness for a number of important charitable causes. “We are grateful to our art-loving clientele and supporters who have continued to grow in numbers over the past several years and we look forward to bringing you even more exciting art and cultural events in the future.” For Art Escape Weekend the gallery will offer a 20% discount on their gallery book, which sells for $25. The book contains color pages of each resident artist’s work as well as biographical information about them. The book also chronicles events that have become a hallmark of this group of artists who support their community with regular events.

Prince George Art and Frame is both a fine art gallery and a fine custom picture framer. The gallery shows a carefully selected offering of local, original art that features changing shows by guest artists. The gallery is home to many of Williamsburg’s finest artists who represent a variety of mediums and styles from traditional watercolors, contemporary scenes and abstracts in oil, acrylics and water media. The gallery also features fine American hand crafts by some of the best artisans working today. “We are simply the best source for local original art in Williamsburg. We have been honored to win “Best Art Gallery” two years running in a local survey.”

Jennifer Raines will feature a Tara Hutch Fine Jewelry Trunk Show for Art Escape Weekend. “Tara Hutchinson’s jewelry is very different from the mainstream. She never intended to be an artist. She was born to be a soldier and a leader of soldiers, but fate had other plans for her. Born in Anchorage, Alaska, Tara grew up tagging along with her older brother’s every adventure, and when she grew up, became a military police officer. A catastrophic injury instantly redefined the blueprint of Tara’s life. An occupational therapist opened the door to jewelry arts that have found expression through solder assemblage, gemstone setting, kuem boo, roller printing and gold and silver application. For heirloom purposes, Tara uses only sterling, 14K and 18K gold and precious metals, and she cuts her own gemstones. Tara’s creations are urban-edgy jewelry with a feminine twist.” Looking ahead to Williamsburg Fall Arts, Quirks of Art is planning a joint show with clay artist Laurie Pollpeter Eskenazi from Illinois Prince George Art and Frame’s framing department is Williamsburg’s and David Gildersle from Savannah, Georgia. “David is the artist who designed the 2015 Winter Blues Jazz Festival sign and logo, and favorite place to shop for picture framing, and their frames enhance we will unveil his 2016 poster at this show and feature some of his the art in many local homes, museums, offices, restaurants and health-care facilities.
