The foundation of offering quality products and supporting them with exceptional customer service expanded eastward in 1977 when the Romer family purchased a dealership in Virginia and, hence, James River Equipment was born. Décor
“You don’t have to be artistic to be able to do this successfully,” Wynings says. “It is all about technique. But if you are artistic you can take the technique and bring your own style to it.”
Breathe new life into your furniture with a coat of paint
Karan Mulkey, owner of Rooms, Blooms and More in Newport News’ Hilton Village, has been restoring and painting furniture for her store and her home for years.
on a budget By NICOLE PAITSEL Daily Press
Gone are the days when your choices of china cabinet are limited to cherry, oak or mahogany. From teal to lime green to rosy pink, wooden furniture pieces are taking on a new life as home décor enthusiasts re-envision worn-out pieces. Local businesses have grown up around the demand, offering commissioned items, new product lines and workshops to teach the public how to become decorating mavens. “I started making things for fun, and then people started offering to pay me to do a piece for them,” says Kim Phillips, of Newport News. Phillips started her business, Coastal Star Décor, in 2013 in response to the demand. Now, she picks up discarded furniture, remakes it into something new, and sells it. “I haven’t really paid for (any furniture), yet,” she says. “Everything has been discarded or found merchandise.” Phillips got the idea from her father-in-law who is a picker for metal items. She asked him to look for furniture pieces for her -- she saw what people could do to restore them on websites like Pinterest.com. She now has a backyard full of discarded furniture waiting for a new look. In October, Phillips began offering “Re-funk Your Junk” home parties, where amateur designers can get hands-on advice. Phillips says she provides the paint, the brushes, the wax and other materials to teach participants a variety of techniques. “The idea is to have fun, fellowship, to learn something in a laid-back environment, and to walk away with a completed piece of art,” she says. Sisters Unique, a home décor store in Newport News’ City Center, began offering painted furniture workshops during the summer of 2013, and the response has been unbelievable, says owner Joy Wynings. The three-hour program focuses on the store’s new product line, the popular Chalk Paint by Annie Sloan -the paint used in many of the projects seen on Pinterest and home décor blogs. Its most popular use is a two-tone distressed look. During the workshops, participants work with a color board and learn five different techniques to redo any surface -- from wood to glass to metal.
There are as many ways to restore a piece of furniture as there are colors in a paint shop.
Mulkey, along with her daughter, Allison Hund, can take an old dining room chair and have it painted and re-covered in just a few hours. “We like to go the cheap way,” Hund says. “I think our cost of materials is usually less than $10.” Mulkey makes her own version of decorative paint using one cup of acrylic paint, two tablespoons of non-sanded grout from the hardware store and about a tablespoon of water, mixed to the consistency of pancake batter. “You don’t have to buy whole quart of paint, since you’re mixing it with something else,” Hund says. “We get the sample pods at Ace Hardware, and that’s more than enough of the color.” Mulkey says she also shops at Habitat Restore, which has locations in Newport News and Williamsburg, for cheap paint in a variety of colors. High-shine lacquer paint is also a growing trend, and may be replacing the distressed look, Mulkey says. When going for a distressed look, Mulkey uses a sponge brush to lessen the appearance of brush strokes. “Don’t over-think it,” she says. “Watch for drips, but anything you don’t like, you can just correct by painting over it.” Once the paint dries, use a sanding block to create the illusion of “worn” places. Rub the spots where the piece would normally experience wear and tear. Finish with a layer of finishing wax, which also can be purchased at a hardware store. Paitsel can be reached at 757-247-4737 or npaitsel@dailypress.com. Find more news about local retailers at dailypress.com/shopping. Interior LOOK
Living in the Peninsula region offers a multitude of locations to call home – the breezy waterfront, the ease of life on wooded acreage, or the bustling urban feel of city centers. Regardless of where you live, your personal interior style can define your space. Below are tips that can help you achieve the three most prominent design styles in our region.
Countryside Style Casual, cozy and all about comfort
• Neutral, earthy tones – Brown, beiges and green as primary wall colors with touches of red/green accents for vibrancy. If the area is small, stick with creamier, lighter colors to give the illusion the room is bigger than it really is. If the area is bigger, feel free to work with warmer colors in the same palette. • Rustic furniture – An icon of country style is handcrafted, rustic furniture. Tie the furniture together with a common element – either type of or color of wood. Mix and match textures on seating – combining leather, linen and cottons. Country-influenced homes will usually have kitchens and entertaining areas as the focal point. • Accessorize - An eclectic mix of fabrics is a staple in country decorating. From table runners, to quilts, to throws – inviting comfort is the name of the game. If you choose the ‘classic’ country route – quiltwork and patterned fabrics will be key. If you go the modern direction – a more simplistic approach using textures and vibrant colors will be important.
Coastal Style
Fluid, easy-care and natural • Always light, never heavy – White is and always will be the most prevalent color in a coastal home. Natural shades of tans and browns, pale blues, soft greens and grays will also fill your space. Case goods can be colorful, painted, weathered wood - but strive to create an interesting, casual and uncontrived space. • Casual and easy – Natural woods, Berber carpets and tile will create the transition you’re looking for that makes moving from room to room easy and inviting. Scattered rugs in natural textures and textiles will also help to cozy up the space. Keep upholstery choices easy and uncomplicated. • Edit, edit, edit – It’s important as you pull a coastal space together to not create a ‘flea market’ with too many things going on in a room. Coastal style isn’t about stuff – it’s about relaxation and space to move around. Smaller items should be contained – in glass or baskets. 14 | Home and Leisure | A Supplement to The Virginia Gazette, Daily Press and Tidewater Review | April 9, 2014

City Style
Carefree environment, modern look • The bare bones – Beams, bearing walls and large windows set the stage for dynamic spaces designed for comfort and practicality in day to day. Minimalistic, modern furniture with clean lines of seating area, with varying height and widths will be found in abundance. • Classic materials – Wood, timeless and useful, is an asset in a city or urban-style space. Tables should be spacious, as should kitchen surfaces, along with an abundance of industrial or modern seating. Floors are frequently left bare • Objects matter – Within an urban space, objects play an important role in the home, and typically have a story to tell. Maps or collectibles from adventures taken, geometric or typographic art can often be found as statement pieces within the home. It doesn’t mean you should include lots of objects, it just means the objects that are on display should have a purpose.

No Cleaning, No Clogging,
No Worries!
Tidewater Gutters, has been solving gutter problems in Hampton Roads and Richmond since 2000. The Carefree Gutter Guard system is guaranteed not to clog. This leaf free system has been engineered to provide a structurally strong water management system that will protect your home and enhance the curb appeal. Carefree Gutter Guard’s patented and professionally installed leaf free gutter protection system is so effective at keeping leaves and debris out of your gutters, it’s guaranteed to remain clog-free for life unlike those other gutter covers and leaf guards on the market - so cleaning gutters will never be a part of your life. Why Carefree Gutter Guard? 1. Carefree Gutter Guard eliminates dangerous ladder climbing and cleaning…forever! Carefree keeps you off the roof and out of the hospital, so you can lead a happier and healthier life — doing what you enjoy doing, rather than cleaning your old gutters. 2. Carefree Gutter Guard will never clog… we guarantee it! Carefree uses a specially designed, protective hood that prevents leaves and other debris from entering the gutters. And their largerthan-average size allows smaller elements, such as seeds or pine needles, to be easily flushed though the system. For this reason, we are able to offer you a LIFETIME WARRANTY against clogging! In the off-chance your gutters clog, don’t get a ladder–we’ll come take care of it for you as soon as possible. 3. Carefree Gutter Guard is the strongest gutter system on the market…with the industry’s most durable installation! Carefree gutters are solidly installed against the building’s fascia board with patented, industrial strength brackets. This unique mounting procedure ensures that your gutters will never fall off or sag — no matter how bad the weather. Your roof is unaffected, its warranty is fully protected, and your gutters remain nice and straight. 4. Carefree Gutter Guard gutters keep you dry, protecting your building and increasing its lifespan! Few people enjoy getting soaked when entering or leaving their home. And even fewer want to deal with a deteriorating foundation or siding. Carefree’s patented gutters are far less expensive! Tiny ridges on the gutter’s protective hood help to slow rainfall coming off your roof. The water then drains into a front and rear lip, is flushed through the gutter system, and directed away from your home by
carefreegutterguard.com
Carefree’s large downspouts. 5. Carefree Gutter Guard’s patented 5" wide design handles even the most extreme rainfall! Carefree gutters are made to accommodate nature’s harshest weather conditions. Larger than most other gutters, Carefree’s generous 5" seamless design handles nearly a gallon of water per foot and maintains a steady water flow through the system. 6. Carefree Gutter Guard’s widely preferred, two piece design allows you to replace parts…saving you money! Over the years, there’s a good chance that your gutters could be dented by hail, fallen branches, or other hazards. For that reason, Carefree gutters were designed as a two-piece system (a seamless trough and a seamless protective hood) that allows easy replacement of only the damaged sections of your gutter — at a fraction of the cost of molded one-piece units! Carefree’s detachable hood is then firmly fastened with patented brackets, never to be pulled loose by weather or wildlife. 7. Carefree Gutter Guard beautifully trims any building! Carefree gutters are engineered to enhance the look of your home. Their larger size and advanced seamless design add a neatly finished touch to any building. No costly fascia build-out is required, and the system does not change the look of your existing roof. Check out our previous installations and you’ll agree that Carefree Gutters are the perfect complement to any home or business facility! 8.Carefree Gutter Guard is available in a variety of colors or 100% copper! Few other brands have the wide color selection that Carefree offers you. Our professionally trained representatives are happy to help you in choosing the perfect match for your building. And with over 24 colors of super heavy-gauge aluminum and the market’s only 100% copper system, Carefree Gutter Guard guarantees your complete satisfaction!

Historic Garden Week in Virginia
features local tours in Yorktown, Williamsburg and Gloucester April 26-May 3
By Kathy Van Mullekom Special to the Daily Press
Master suite at White Hall, Gloucester
Historic Garden Week in Virginia showcases Virginia at its finest, featuring 250 historic and private gardens and homes on tours over eight consecutive days. This year’s statewide tour April 26 – May 3 holds more promise for beauty in the gardens because it’s being held a week or so later than usual to avoid the Easter holiday, according to Lynn McCashin, executive director of the Garden Club of Virginia, which sponsors the annual event. The planned delay will probably turn out to be a smart move given the unusually harsh winter conditions gardens have endured, especially since weather forecasters are now predicting a slow start to spring.

Since 1929, Garden Week has raised millions for the restoration of public gardens, including Bruton Parish Church in Williamsburg, Bacon’s Castle and St. John’s Mew in Surry and Lee Hall in Newport News, as well as national landmarks Mount Vernon and Monticello.

YORKTOWN TOUR On the Peninsula, the Hampton Roads and Huntington garden clubs host Garden Week on the bluffs in historic Yorktown 10 a.m.-5 p.m. April 30. “As always, our homes and gardens are beautiful, blending the old with the new, and making this tour magically diverse,” says Sarah Huddleston, tour chairman. “We have the Hornsby House, now a beautifully restored bed and breakfast, owned and run by the sons of the matriarch, Marion Hornsby Bowditch, who championed all things Yorktown. She called in friends to float the Waterman’s Museum across the York River, actually getting it stuck on a sand bar before making it to the shore. Her presence resounds through the home.

In addition, she says: • T he Hodson home, a two-year-old Craftsman’s bungalow, at 207 Nelson St. takes “chic’ to a whole new level. The soothing, soft palette of light blue, taupe and white lets the home’s treasures — vintage mirrors and art by the owners’ son — stand out. • T he Purkey home at 226 Nelson St. is a renovation that has taken six years to perfect. Using books from Lowe’s, the self-taught owner created a masterpiece with every detail beautifully crafted. • T he Moss home at 224 Nelson St., formally a guest cottage, is a charming little gem with a beautiful garden that’s a wonderful blend of indoor-outdoor living. • T he Brock-Weekley home at 220 Bacon St. is a colonial style home that houses collections – antiques, ceramics, paintings, brass and silverware of English and American origin. The home features a mural going down the steps, painted by the owners, that tells their Yorktown story. IMMEDIATE RIGHT Moss home BELOW Brock-Weekley home

williamsburg TOUR The Williamsburg Garden Week tour encompasses homes along Conservancy Road, adjacent to the Williamsburg Winery, 10 a.m.-5:30 p.m. April 29. “If there is a ‘garden theme’ in the Conservancy neighborhood, it is that all of the neighbors have a great love of art and all of them enhance and punctuate their gardens, woodlands and waterfront settings with sculpture and artwork,” says Terry Buntrock, a member of the Williamsburg Garden Club, which organizes the tour. above Thaler home RIGHT Matty’s Garden at Matthew Whaley Elementary School
“The properties sit on a bluff that overlooks the confluence of College and Half-way creeks. Waterfowl have a haven here and eagle sightings are common.” In addition, she says: • T he Thaler home is a collection of four cottages that are joined by glass galleries. The riverside garden is a sculpture garden. The homeowners particularly love a bronze piece that depicts a little girl chasing butterflies. The late Warrenton, Va., landscape expert, Meade Palmer assisted in editing the property’s woodland setting. Open vistas are punctuated by specimen trees.
• T he Munzel residence, built by a couple who grew up in Chicago, shows the work of an architect who captured their mid-western roots in a Prairie-style home that is an adaptation of Frank Lloyd Wright’s “Robie House.” The swimming pool anchors the back living area. The family loves Hawaii, so the pool house and guest cottage is decorated with Hawaiian artwork. A wall with gate gives privacy and quiet to the Japanese stone garden. • T he Pritchard home has a stone tower that’s intended to evoke garden follies of the British Georgian period. The homeowner built a fountain grotto from more than 10,000 seashells that she collected. Open areas and woods are perfect places for this family’s dogs to roam. • T he Robinson home sets on 22 acres of marsh, woodlands and gardens. The homeowner is a master gardener, and her English glass house and potting cottage are sights to see. An enclosed back porch overlooks dozens of hydrangea bushes and the marsh. There is a small swimming pool just outside the private living areas. • T he Beck garden is reached by a curving driveway that’s bordered by flower beds and specimen trees. A central flower bed in the front yard features a pair of bronze whitetail deer by Virginia artist Robert H. Turner. Water splashes to a koi pond after making its route through the rock garden and past a bronze art sculpture of a little girl. above RIGHT Robinson home ABOVE Beck garden

“Gloucester: Land of Rivers and Streams” is the theme for the Gloucester Garden Week 10 a.m.-5 p.m. May 3. “The waterways of Gloucester County have been witness to the lives of the Powhatan Indians and Capt. John Smith, to revolutionary battles, to visits by Thomas Jefferson, to historic mansions and waterman’s cottages, to the cultivation and proliferation of the daffodil and to the contemplations of Martin Luther King, Jr.,” says Letitia Grant, a member of the Garden Club of Gloucester, which sponsors the event.

Spring scenes
Outdoors. Pick up ready-made or plant your own “simply salad bowls for fast and easy greens. Simply clip the outside edges to enjoy fresh salads for several weeks. As you clip the outside edges, the inside continues to grow. Look for two different mixes: Alfresco with red and green leaf lettuces with arugula, endive and radicchio for a Mediterranean flavor and look; and City Garden for a traditional mix of red and green lettuces that are easy on the palate.
Indoors. Tuck several citrus plants around your home to enjoy their sweet flowering fragrances and delicious fruits. Potted citrus plants are grafted and are perfectly happy to live out their lives in containers you keep indoors during winter and place outdoors in warmer times. Carefree, tasty citrus to enjoy include: kumquat with small-sized fruits that can be eaten skin and all; calamondin which resemble a miniature orange tree Ideas and photos courtesy of and can be used in homemade marmalades; and satsuma with McDonald Garden Center 1139 W. Pembroke Ave., Hampton 722-7463 or mcdonaldgardencenter.com thin-skinned, bright orange and ever-so-sweet fruits. 30 | Home and Leisure | A Supplement to The Virginia Gazette, Daily Press and Tidewater Review | April 9, 2014
Indoor & outdoor gardening ideas to get you growing through the year By Kathy Van Mullekom Special to the Daily Press
A
fter a very long cold winter, the longer daylight hours of spring are noticeable and the sound of the birds on sunny days is enough to bring a spark of excitement to the housebound gardener, says Jeffrey Williamson, nursery manager at Smithfield Gardens Suffolk. “Venture outside and begin to enjoy the beauty of spring,” he says. To get you growing all year long, we invited four local garden centers to inspire you with indoor and outdoor gardening ideas. Here’s what they suggest for the seasons.
Indoors. If you love the taste of fresh herbs in recipes, try an indoor herb garden. All you need is a sunny window or countertop, pots at least 4 inches deep, organic potting mix and seeds or plants. Good indoor herb choices are rosemary, oregano, thyme, sage and parsley. Pinch regularly to encourage a dense, bushy plant. If you find you have more than you need just wash, chop, place in an ice cube tray with water and freeze. Then for a quick addition to your recipe, defrost a cube or two and you will have herbs “almost” as fresh as the day they were picked.
Summer styles
Outdoors. Plant a perennial garden to watch butterflies flutter from flower to flower. You need food sources that are nectar plants for the adults and host plants for young larvae. Different species of butterflies have specific perennial choices so stagger several different types. Popular nectar plants are: buddleias, agastaches, monardas, rudbeckias, asclepias, hibiscus and salvias. Popular host plants are: asters, rudbeckias, sedum, salvia officinalis and asclepias incanarta. Add annual herbs parsley, dill and fennel for additional food sources for larvae. A great new introduction of buddleias (butterfly bushes) is a smaller variety that grows 3-5 feet tall -- appropriately it is the “Buzz” buddleia series.

Fall flourishes Outdoors. In autumn, flowers come and go, but foliage, bark, berries, seeds and cones are reliable showstoppers in the landscape. Creating that perfect fall harvest look requires only the simple addition of a pumpkin and a colorful container of grass and snapdragons with trailing pansies spilling over the edge. Some amazing fall-interest plants include blueberries with their long season of red foliage color, fall blooming camellias that present a multitude of flower varieties and a plethora of striking ornamental grasses. Certain trees really steal the show in fall with a magnificent display of foliage and form, including native Nyssa sylvatica (black gum), with leaves turning a brilliant shade of red in October and Ginkgo biloba, which transforms into the most golden leaved tree in the landscape.
Indoors. Fairy gardens and terrariums require minimum work and maximum enjoyment, especially as the days of outdoor gardening fade away. Creating a miniature garden on a tabletop requires only a container, potting soil, a few pebbles and your imagination. Spread pebbles along the bottom of the container for drainage, add a two-inch layer of potting soil and then tuck in the several plants you select from a greenhouse. Lightly water, add a few special accents like a mini fairy, bench or arbor and place in indirect light. Ideas and photo courtesy of Anderson’s Home & Garden Showplace 11250 Jefferson Ave., Newport News 599-3510 or http://andersonshgs.com
Winter wonders Outdoors. Plant outdoor container combinations for the cooler months, using evergreen shrubs as main components. They add structure and texture, as well as interesting color contrasts to seasonal staples like pansies. For instance, the bronze winter color of the needled Black Dragon Japanese cedar is brightened by the golden euonymus and the golden-lime color is repeated in the grass-like Acorus gramineus called Ogon’ and trailing Sedum rupestre called Angelina. Add some trailing sedum around the edges and a pop of color with Delta True Blue pansies. Sun keeps the colors bright and healthy.
Indoors.Winter is a great time to focus on interior gardening, especially houseplants that “tide you over” until you can get back out into the garden. For a dish garden, turn a simple glass container into a decorative accent with the addition of two types of stones and a small succulent garden in a shallow drip pan that sits on top of the stones. Fort Monroe’s history is interpreted for visitors at the Casemate Museum located at 20 Bernard Road. Self guided walking tours of the fort are available as well as the Fort Monroe Junior Ranger Program Guide presented by the National Park Service. The Casemate Museum is open Tuesday through Sunday from 10:30 am – 4:30 pm.
