Do you know what “Elder Law” means? If the answer is no, you are not alone!

Elder Law deals with specific issues for our aging, elderly and disabled population. People in the U.S. over age 65 is expected to rise 20% by 2050, Elder Law a highly complex area of law.

The average cost per day in a Nursing home is $204. The average family is paying between $5500 up to $8500 per month, and sometimes higher depending on the level of care and facility selected. Has your family planned for this, or will you run out of money? Due to improper, or no planning, statistics say that families run out of money within the first year of care.

be necessary for many seniors. Veterans Benefits

Our nations Hero’s and their families have earned benefits that often go unclaimed. Many eligible veterans have stated they are confused by the process, requirements and paperwork.

Medicaid

The VA Aid and Attendance pension program is available to veterans, or their widowed spouses if the veteran served 90 days or more of active duty, with one day during a period of wartime. This benefit can provide for care, including: home care (even by a child or family spouse), home care by a professional assisted living, nursing care, insurance and medications.

Medicaid is a government program that pays for long term nursing home care. Rising costs of long term care mean seniors may not be able to pay privately for care. As a result, Medicaid planning may

with special needs to depend on public benefits. Public benefits often fail to meet all needs of a disabled individual. The supplemental needs of those individuals (needs not covered by public benefits) can be met by using funds held in a Special Needs Trust (SNT). The SNT will provide for the disabled individuals needs while protecting their public benefits. Elder Abuse There are millions of cases of elder abuse every year. In Virginia, Adult Protective Services receives thousands of reports, and three fourths of these claims are substantiated. Elder Abuse, by family members and strangers, can be physical, emotional or sexual. It could be neglect and abandonment, financial abuse and exploitation, healthcare abuse or fraud. The growing population has made this segment of our population a target for Elder Abuse.

Estate Planning Estate Planning is developing a customized plan for yourself and your family during incapacity and upon your death. A well-crafted estate plan legally arranges for the orderly transfer of everything you have to those you care about, with a minimum of taxes, court costs, legal fees, and stress to your loved ones. Probate Probate is the court-supervised proceeding by which a deceased person’s assets are assembled, debts are paid, and at the completion of the court process, remaining assets are transferred to the identified beneficiaries. This can be a frustrating, public, expensive, and time consuming process. Trust Administration A trust is a client developed rule book for handling assets, and Trust Administration occurs when the rules and wishes of the Trustmaker are put into action.

Diagnosed in 2004, the Hampton resident had suffered from a gradual loss of muscle control along with depression to the point he thought he’d need to move into an assisted-living community. While workouts were difficult at first, he stuck with them. “The biggest surprise was how quickly my strength, flexibility and balance improved,” he said, “and how these physical improvements also improved my confidence, selfimage and attitude.” While many older adults are nervous about starting yoga, the practice’s body postures, breathing control and meditation can offer a wide range of physical and mental benefits, according to a growing number of studies and anecdotal reports.

On that list: increased bone, muscle and joint strength; improved balance and range of motion; reduced stress and anxiety; better sleep, energy levels and mood; and relief from chronic pain, digestive issues or menopausal symptoms. Overall, it can help people maintain their independence, lower their risk of falls, stay at a healthy weight and boost their memory and concentration, instructors say. “Your body listens to what your mind tells it, and with a committed practice you will be able to go through daily activities with a body

that knows it can be healthy, strong and flexible,” said Linda Melochick, an instructor at Zenya Yoga & Massage Studio in Newport News. Melochick, 54, was dealing with muscle aches, joint stiffness, insomnia and irritability when she turned to yoga six years ago. “It has brought me wellness and inner peace,” she said. A low-impact exercise, yoga can be as simple or challenging as a person’s fitness allows. With a doctor’s clearance, people with any number of health concerns — diabetes, arthritis, osteoporosis, bursitis and hypertension, to name a few — are able to safely practice. Since there are many different classes and styles, beginners may need to sample several or try a private session to find the best fit. Missy Kerner, director of education at Body Balance in Williamsburg, often recommends starting with her studio’s “gentle yoga” program, which moves at a slower pace with less advanced poses. “We meet everyone where they are — whatever level they are,” Kerner says. “Just keeping your body active is so important. You may increase your range of motion, or it may be more about maintaining what you have. Either way, it can make people feel more secure in their independence.”

page 1 0

Mental benefits are just as meaningful, Kerner adds. Meditation helps with focus and decision-making, while social connections often lead to friendships with people of all ages. Body Balance has classes that draw everyone from teenagers to seniors in their 90s. “You might be in a class with someone who is 20 or 30 years younger than you,” she said. “You’re not going to become isolated.” Research on yoga consistently shows tangible results. For example, its weight-bearing aspects can slow bone thinning and lower the risk of osteoporosis, a common problem for post-menopausal women. Poses and controlled breathing also seem to improve blood pressure and increase levels of a brain chemical that calms nerves and stabilizes mood. For Dianne Beskenis of Hampton, yoga has brought relief from a chronic bladder condition that had bothered her for years. When she’s in pain, Beskenis, 61, begins to breathe slowly and deeply. “Yoga has taught me that my breath alone can have a tremendous impact on reducing my pain,” she said. Just don’t be afraid to dive in, Melochick says: “There is no judging, no competing or no comparing.”

health guide: doctors

a checkup check list advice to note

Learn what the doc thinks is important. The focus should be on a healthy lifestyle, a local PA says. Consider the office’s hours and availability. Is it open during times convenient for you? Can you get an appointment within seven days? The pro should be all ears. Your doctor should be interested in all areas of your life and listen well.

Need a new physician? Here’s what to look for — and avoid By Susan Smigielski Acker

L

ooking for a physician is similar to looking for a mate; it needs to be a long-term relationship. Stephanie Zeiber, a physician’s assistant with Sentara Family Medicine Physicians in Hampton, said an important factor to consider when meeting a new physician for the first time is for him or her to not only check your physical vitals but ask about all your life. “All aspects of the patient’s life need to be considered — that includes their family structure, social life — that all plays a part in a patient’s overall health,” she said. As with many new relationships, first impressions are important. Zeiber said that when meeting a new physician, or a member of the medical team such as a physician’s assistant or nurse practitioner, the visit should be about 30 minutes. “There should be no rush,” she said. Pay close attention to what the medical professional emphasizes. “It should be on maintaining or obtaining a healthy life and preventable care. This is especially true for older adults,” she said. Another important aspect is to make sure the patient is up to date on their immunizations, such as shingles and pneumonia. There should be a bone density check if there has not been one in the past, Zeiber said.

page 1 4

PrimeTime

While a good doctor may be in high demand, it is important that it is relatively easy to get an appointment within seven days if there is something the patient feels needs attention in the near future. “Or at least someone on staff can see them,” she said. “And if they have an acute illness, the practice should have at least one or two openings so if a person is not feeling well and needs to be seen that day,” Zeiber said. Zeiber said there are advantages to seeing various medical practice members and not just the physician. In many cases, practices are using a team approach, which is an advantage for patients because the team can cover each other on a patient’s health. There’s a “two heads are better than one” concept in medicine today, she said. Another aspect to consider is when the office is open, such as if early morning or late afternoon appointments are offered, which could be a consideration for those who need it. The average wait time to be seen for a scheduled appointment is a consideration. “There are exceptions every once in a while, but generally speaking, a patient should be seen within 10 minutes of an appointment time,” she said. Each visit following the first one should last about 15 to 20 minutes. “Overall, the medical practitioner should be a good listener,” she said.

fall fun

feeling fall-ish? Plan your best bets for leaf peeping in Virginia this fall By Alison Johnson

V

irginia isn’t just for lovers — it’s for leaves. Every year, Virginia is a draw for people in search of beautiful fall foliage. While Skyline Drive in Shenandoah National Park and the Blue Ridge Parkway are the most popular destinations, visitors are rarely disappointed no matter where they go, officials from the Virginia Department of Forestry say. “Our state has some of the best colors because of the diversity of its forests,” said Joe Lehnen, a forester based in the Shenandoah Valley. “Skyline Drive is a wonderful experience, but there are certainly a lot of alternatives for people who are looking for less crowded areas.” Predicting the peak time for fall foliage isn’t easy, Lehnen says. That time also can vary by a week or two depending on location, as color generally spreads from west to east.

One highly recommended drive on the DOF site is the Greene County tour in the Charlottesville area. (Photo courtesy of the Virginia Department of Forestry)

fall fun

A common peak range for the Shenandoah Valley is between Oct. 20 and the first week in November, while early November is a better estimate for coastal regions. But a number of factors can lead to variations from yearto-year, including daily temperatures, rainfall and wind. “It’s a moving target,” Lehnen notes. “By about Oct. 15, we may have a good feeling of what days in a given area will be truly great.” The Department of Forestry has a website (www.dof. virginia.gov/fall) and hotline (1-800-424-5683) with regular updates. The website also offers links to recommended activities and alternative drives to Skyline and the Blue Ridge Parkway, which runs between Waynesboro and into North Carolina. Leaves begin to turn as days get shorter and plants slow their production of chlorophyll, the green pigment that absorbs light to make food. That reveals the other pigments — reds, oranges, yellows, golds and browns — hidden year-round in their cells. Some earlier trees to transform, such as black gum, red maple and dogwood, may display a bit of color in early September. Other showcase trees in the state are ash (yellow and maroon), beech (yellow to orange), hickory (golden bronze), oak (red or brown) and poplar (golden yellow). Foliage peaks generally last a week to 10 days in any given spot. In the mountains, higher elevations begin to shed color earlier than more sheltered lower areas. One highly recommended drive on the DOF site is the Greene County tour in the Charlottesville area. Two other drives that Lehman likes are Route 340 between Elkton and Front Royal — which showcases the Blue Ridge Mountains to one side and the Massanutten Mountain range to the other — and Route 10 heading south from Richmond.

Finesse in Plastic Surgery:

The Nasal Tip

Before

The public is more exposed to the big procedures that define plastic surgery rather than the artful, delicate procedures that are performed for less dramatic deformities, done as brief procedures, in my office setting, and often without the need for general anesthetics or even heavy sedation. While the bulk of my nasal surgery is complete rhinoplasty, sometimes people are concerned about a specific part of the nose, such as the nasal “hump”, a dropped tip, a flattening of the columella, wide nostrils, asymmetry of the nasal bones, or one of the nasal tip deformities, such as bulbous tip, a narrow tip, asymmetry of the two sides of the tip, or notching of the nostrils at the tip. While these are but some of the tip deformities that bother people, the most common to present for surgery in my practice is the bulbous tip. The bulbous tip is a trait people are born with but don’t present as deformities until puberty. Once established, they are permanent. Only surgery will correct it. The actual defect is a broadening of the two lower lateral cartilages, often asymmetrically. Very nicely, these two cartilages

After

are easily accessible through the nostrils. An incision made inside each nostril exposes the overly large cartilages. A three millimeter rim of the cartilages is left intact and the bulky part is simply removed. The stitches are inside the nose, so there is no visible scar. Is there a bulky dressing after surgery? No. A small cotton ball is left overnight inside each nostril. There are no bandages. There is no “down time” when it comes to social exposure. Post operatively, few patients have any discomfort at all. From a plastic surgeons perspective, the operation is small in scope but is a finesse operation, that’s enjoyable to perform, with satisfying results for both patient and doctor.

any common nutrition mistakes are universal across all age groups. Yet some have different consequences as people grow older, dietitians say. Good thing is: it’s never too late to change bad habits. “Sometimes you can’t undo damage, but you certainly can head off future damage,” says Jill Weisenberger, a Newport News-based registered dietitiannutritionist and certified diabetes educator. “It’s also not only about disease prevention. What we eat affects us every day – our energy levels, mood and feelings of well being.” Here are five frequent pitfalls:

health guide: nutrition

We should all get back to basics. — Caroline Fornshell, dietitian-nutritionist

1) No steady supply of protein. Protein stimulates muscle growth, which slows with age; without enough, people are at higher risk for falls and loss of independence. Many people eat little to no protein at breakfast, a small amount at lunch and a large serving at dinner. It’s better to aim for a moderate amount – about 25 grams – at each meal. At breakfast, for example, add an egg, cottage cheese, a glass of milk, some unsweetened Greek yogurt or a slice of lean meat such as turkey. 2) Not enough fruits and vegetables. Produce may reduce the risk of several chronic illnesses, including diabetes, stroke, heart disease and certain cancers. Aim to eat one — or both — at every meal and snack, whether fresh, frozen or canned. Combine them with a healthy protein to stay full longer. Some snack ideas: vegetables dipped in hummus or a blend of beans and salsa; cottage cheese mixed with peaches or diced tomatoes; or an apple with a dab of peanut butter or handful of nuts. 3) Too many convenience foods (and trouble with marketing). Many people don’t cook as much after their kids move out. But packaged goods often are high in sugar, fat, salt or calories, while labels such as “all natural” or “glutenfree” can fool buyers into thinking they’re healthy. Stick to whole foods and simple recipes, says Caroline Fornshell, a registered dietitian-nutritionist, certified diabetes educator and co-founder of LWell, a Williamsburg-based wellness company: “We should all get back to basics.” 4) No conversations about changing nutritional needs. Two examples of nutrients that become increasingly important, according to Weisenberger: lutein, a carotenoid, and vitamin B12. Lutein helps protect against age-related vision loss and possibly dementia. B12, which

health guide: nutrition keeps nerve and blood cells healthy, is less readily absorbed after age 50. Lutein sources include leafy greens, peas, corn, pistachios and egg whites; fortified cereals and multivitamins can boost B12 levels. In addition, omega-3 fatty acids, found in fish such as salmon and tuna, can help ward off heart disease. Talk to a doctor or nutritionist about individual needs. 5) Too little fiber. Older adults may suffer more from constipation, and fiber promotes regularity and also lowers cholesterol. Beans and lentils are great choices – blend them into salads, soups and pasta sauces – as are wholewheat breads, baked potato skins, berries, vegetables, oatmeal and cereals with 5 or more grams of fiber.

Ava Marie Mooney has calculated that the meals, prepared by the Newport News-based company MOMO on the Go, cost less than what the couple would pay to eat out several times a week.

Drug Muggers Many medications both prescription and over the counter (OTC) can deplete our bodies of vital vitamins and minerals. The term “drug muggers” coined by author/pharmacist Suzy Cohen embodies this premise. While we take medications prescribed by our physicians to make us feel better, sometimes these same medications are steadily “robbing” our bodies. As a result, we are losing essential building blocks to help us build energy, fight off infections and keep us healthy. This reduction of vital nutrients in time may also lead to additional health consequences.

to help your loved one as they transition and to give you peace of mind –

that’s what I do.

“Many people are tr ying to steer away from processed foods and fast food, but they don’t have a lot of time. I think people also have become less afraid to admit that they can’t do ever ything on their own. — Chef Martha Bennett, of Newport News-based MOMO on the Go

Chef Martha Bennett customizes menus based on their tastes and Ava Marie Mooney’s dairy-free diet while using fresh, in-season ingredients. Free from grocery shopping and cooking, Ava Marie Mooney, 65, has more time to spend with her grandchildren and as a caregiver for her father. “I’m a very health-conscious person, and we prefer to eat at home most nights,” she said. “I was at a point where I was so busy in my life that this was a perfect fit.” Personal chefs are no longer just for the superrich or big-city dwellers. Locals from many walks of life – from bachelors and working parents to retired residents and adult children paying for elderly parents to get regular meals – use MOMO, says Bennett, an experienced restaurant chef who also owns a café in Newport News (“MOMO” stands for Mom Off, Meal On). “Many people are trying to steer away from processed foods and fast food, but they don’t have a lot of time,” she said. “I think people also have become less afraid to admit that they can’t do everything on their own.”

Let me help YOU help YOUR family to facilitate all facets of senior transitioning.

Each personal chef has different operating rules. Many prepare, package and store meals in a customer’s kitchen, bringing their own equipment and cleaning up afterward. Others schedule deliveries on certain days of the week. Some provide ingredients, perhaps with a shopping fee; others give customers the option of buying groceries themselves. Clients can select how many meals they want weekly. Personal chefs offer a wide choice of entrees, sides and desserts: low-carbohydrate, gluten-free, vegetarian, vegan and more. “It’s common for us to work with people with diabetes, celiac disease, high cholesterol, allergies or other issues,” says Ryan Minner, owner of Salted Chef, a company that serves a roughly 40-mile radius around Williamsburg. “Special diets are a big part of our business.” For older adults, especially those with greater financial flexibility, personal chefs can be a perfect way to enjoy retirement and empty nest life. Costs vary widely based on needs; MOMO customers, for example, pay anywhere from $9 to $15 per person per meal. Salted Chef generally charges $55 to $65 for meals but can include one to eight servings with each. Bennett, who started MOMO on the Go in 2008, predicts personal chefs will grow more popular as the population ages. One good sign: Ava Marie Mooney, who happily feasts on fish, chicken, beef, rice, sweet potatoes, homemade salad dressing, fresh fruit and much more, can’t pick a favorite item. “All of it,” she said, “is just delicious.”

Are Reverse Mortgages Ever A Good Deal? Written by: Walt Zaremba

Homeowners 62 and older may be tempted by the offers for reverse mortgages as a solution to their financial stresses. The celebrity spokespeople seem so warm and caring and it seems like a simple solution to an overwhelming problem. While a reverse mortgage might be a reasonable solution for some seniors, for many it is a bad financial decision for a number of reasons.

these, they will be in default and the lender can foreclose.

Every year, the Better Business Bureau says it receives complaints about reverse mortgages. These complaints show that there are many problems with reverse mortgages. And the complaints also confirm that many seniors who turn to reverse mortgages as a solution do not actually understand the process or the long-term results.

You should talk with an experienced elder law attorney before signing anything. Our clients turn to us for advice and solutions knowing that they won’t be charged for telephone calls or consultations. We see our role as your adviser as an important part of serving our clients overall estate planning goals.

Some consumers are unaware that a reverse mortgage is actually a loan that leverages their home’s equity. It’s one of the most expensive forms of credit a person can get, with high origination fees, high interest charges and insurance premiums topping those of most other types of loans. Typically, a reverse mortgage origination fee can be up to $6,000 and the initial premium for federal insurance is set at 2 percent of the home’s value.

Lastly, watch out for scammers trying to take advantage. This type of mortgage is designed for seniors and unfortunately that makes this kind of transaction rife for abuse by those trying to make the fast buck. As always, if it’s too good to be true, it is probably a scam. If you are not sure if the mortgage is a good idea giving your unique set of circumstances, talk with a qualified elder law attorney; the home you save may be your own.

Most people realize that repayment of a reverse mortgage loan isn’t required until the borrower dies but few have thought through the prospect of what would happen if the borrower needs to move into a nursing home or assisted living facility. Any non-borrower residing in the home, including a spouse, would be required to vacate as well. Likely this is not what you had in mind.

Remember, proper estate planning is not a do-it-yourself project. Call us for a complimentary consultation and register online for our complimentary seminars..

Senior citizens who apply for a reverse mortgage because they are having difficulty meeting property taxes or insurance payment obligations need to know that with these loans, property taxes, insurance, upkeep and maintenance are still the borrower’s responsibility. If the borrower fails to do any of

So, when is a reverse mortgage a good idea? One benefit of a reverse mortgage is that seniors can remain in their homes while receiving a steady cash flow. The best reverse mortgage candidate is an individual age 62 or older who: 1) lives alone; 2) has significant equity in the home; 3) plans to stay in their home; 4) has no desire to leave it to heirs; and, 5) is healthy.

Call us to schedule your complimentary consultation at 757-259-0707 or complete a request for your complimentary consultation online at http://events.zarembalaw.com/. Reference: The (Appleton WI) Post Crescent (June 20, 2015) “Be cautious before taking on reverse mortgage.”

ome small local businesses survive economic ups and downs, some thrive. Dixie RV has done both and is driving forward with the next generation. The Newport News recreational vehicle dealership is now old enough to qualify for AARP membership. Dixie RV was started by Poquoson native, Crosby Forrest, 50 years ago when he sold truck covers. He is now semi-retired. He expanded his inventory after attending the Pennsylvania RV and Camping Show where he purchased a Silver Eagle travel trailer and TeePee popup. By 1972, Forrest and his part-time salesman sold 600 travel trailers and popups. The price was the price and it was easy, according to Forrest. One year later Forrest opened up a full dealership adding motorized RVs. It was exciting times he remembers. A few years later, the gas shortage hit knocking many RV dealerships down. Forrest said a local banker, whose wife worked at the dealership, helped keep the business afloat. However, the worst time was when

interest rates were more than 20 percent in 1979 and 1980. The business survived in selling parts and doing repairs. As the economy took a better turn, so did Dixie RV. The RV Business Top 50 Dealer, expanded twice on adjacent property over the past 20 years. During that time, Forrest sought to improve the rough relationships between dealers and manufacturers. That effort got him inducted to the RV/MH (manufactured home) Hall of Fame in Elkhart, Ind., in 2006. Now, his son-in-law, Dennis Dalheim, daughter Lynne Dalheim and son Layne Forest, run the operation. Dennis said the main reason they have survived and thrived for so long is the due to the overall approach to managing the company’s money. “We’ve always been smart with the money. Our success is being frugal and not to spend in excess. Every decision (in spending) is a slow process. We’ve always paid for with what we have,” he said. That thinking carried them through another tough time, the most recent United States recession, he said.

“And it is all about teamwork,” Dalheim added, speaking of several long-time employees. For instance, Jerry Morewitz is a 27year sales member, Leigh Kirz has been comptroller for 18 years while Peggy Butler has worked in parts for 15 years. Dalheim also points the dedication of his wife, who has been with the company for 33 years. Because of excellent customer service, there are repeat customers and even customers whose parents bought from Dixie RV many years ago, he said. The typical RV customer who easily sees the advantage of traveling with a home, Dalheim said. “It is a relaxed lifestyle with being able to decide if you like an area you are traveling in and want to stay awhile. On the flip side, you are in an area you don’t much care for, then you can move on, ” he said. The majority of RV owners are around 60 years old. However, Dalheim said a big market is young families. “There are also families with several generations who own an RV. They will have trips together,” he said.

are always looking for new ways to feel, look and live better. And our approach to fitness has evolved along with our culture, from the charmingly simple Hula-Hoop of the 1950s to the fuzzy leg warmers of the 1980s to today’s datacentric activity trackers. Here are some of the popular fitness trends that have caught on (and, in some cases, held on) over the years.

Days” era of the 1950s, when front lawns across America were dotted with fresh-faced tweens swiveling colorful plastic rings around their hips, legs and arms. Reconnecting with your inner child comes with benefits: Just 30 minutes of hip-swiveling action burns about 165 calories for a woman and about 200 calories for a man, according to the Mayo Clinic. Vibrating belt These early exercise machines featured a broad strap meant to be looped around the waist (or rear, or thighs, or any part of your body that “embarrasses you most,” as one ad helpfully noted). And then? Turn the machine on, and it vibrated your fat away. Except the magic didn’t actually work. Ads in the 1950s and ‘60s pledged that the machine’s vibrations would break down fat so that the body could simply flush it away. Unfortunately, scientists report that this is not at all how bodies work.

Gym culture When fitness master Jack LaLanne opened what he claimed was the first modern gym — the Jack LaLanne Physical Culture Studio — in the mid-1930s, people were aghast: He was charging people just to exercise? It was the beginning of a trend that wouldn’t catch on in earnest for several decades. Jazzercise In 1969, as people searched for a way to disguise the tedium of exercise in a fun package, a perky dance instructor named Judi Sheppard Missett offered a solution: Jazzercise, a high-octane mashup of jazz dance, kickboxing, ballet, Pilates and yoga. It was the dawn of choreographed exercise set to music, and (mostly female) fitness aficionados were psyched. They bought the tapes, took the classes and rocked out to Wham! and Cyndi Lauper in headbands and brightly colored tights. It’s no longer the No. 1 exercise du jour, but Jazzercise is still alive

and well with more than 8,300 franchises worldwide. Aerobics You know Jane Fonda. You know Richard Simmons. But what about Kenneth Cooper? In the late 1960s, the military physician coined the term “aerobics” to describe a regimen he created to prevent coronary artery disease. After Cooper published a book on the subject, the idea took off in gyms and on VCRs across the country: dance aerobics, step aerobics, sport aerobics, even water aerobics. Numerous fitness personalities seized on the trend, but the king and queen of aerobics were undoubtedly Simmons, the oft-parodied fitness guru who helped people “party off the pounds,” and Fonda, the actressturned-exercise-maven who sold more than 17 million copies of workout tapes. was Suzanne Somers cheerily touting her Thighmaster. There was the taut, muscled Bowflex man. These attractive bodies could be yours, the infomercials said, if you bought this equipment, put it in your home and actually used it for exercise. Tae Bo Charismatic karate champ Billy Blanks created his fast-paced cardio workout by combining a little of everything: martial arts, boxing, dance moves and pulsating hip-hop beats. He taught his first classes in his Los Angeles garage in the ’80s, and from there, the workout took off fast: Blanks opened a popular studio, taught Paula Abdul how to keep her abs tight and suddenly, everyone you knew was talking about Tae Bo. The company sold more than 500 million videos, created a high-intensity workout empire. Spinning Looking for a way to train for long-distance cycling races even in bad weather (and to stay home while his wife was pregnant), South African cyclist Johnny Goldberg made his first stationary bike by hand in 1989. After he started teaching classes for handfuls of friends, the phenomenon began to spread, and Goldberg opened the first Spin Centre in Santa Monica in 1990. By the mid-’90s, he’d trademarked the name: spinning. CrossFit This isn’t your typical workout. It’s both competitive and communal, and it’s intense. The regimen emphasizes whole-body fitness and general preparedness rather than specializing in one particular discipline. To accomplish this, the CrossFit method involves a mix of gymnastics, weight lifting, pull-ups and calisthenics. Also, loud grunting.
