PARK SPOTLIGHT

Durham Parks and Recreation has responded to the public’s request to better maintain City parks and trails. Money from the ½ penny for park and trail deferred maintenance, Durham Parks Foundation, as well as money from the capital project planning, have gone into repairs.

Rock (the) Quarry Park Festival Site

Festivals bring the community together in a celebration of our culture and help us re-imagine our City at its most spectacular. Most importantly, Durham needs a place to be loud and to dance. Durham Parks and Recreation (DPR) produces festivals that are free and open to all, and has been the home to the Bimbé Cultural Arts Festival for the past five years.

Despite this park hosting great festivals, the two old baseball fields weren't designed to accommodate 20,000 revelers. Festival and park planners know that serious work is needed to make this park a true festival home. A plan has been developed for a stage area, water hookups for misting tents, and electricity. It also includes an accessible pedestrian loop with a new bridge between the restored Vietnam Veterans Trail and Ellerbe Creek Trail. A new dog park and sound play garden will also be built.

Park construction is expected to begin this Fall and be completed by March 2021. Park planners and the Durham Parks Foundation (DPF) have developed a wish list to include festival shade structures, art, and lighting displays to further enhance the park. If you’d like to help with these wish list items, please connect with the Durham Parks Foundation.
