CAREER DEVELOPMENT TEAM

Career and College Success

DPS Mission

Educational equity is our collective responsibility. We prepare students for career, college and life. We create conditions and partnerships where students, families and team members belong and thrive.

CCS Vision

Every student in DPS will receive tangible support, opportunities and resources throughout their time in DPS for individual exploration and discovery, career exploration, and academic and career planning.

From Superintendent - DPS Commitment to Career Development Opportunities

Dear Members of the DPS Community,

It is my pleasure to share with you the 2023-24 Career Development Team Annual Report. Proudly, DPS has the largest known K-12 work-based learning programming across the United States and, last school year, can boast that nearly 15,000 elementary, middle, and high school experiences were completed by our diverse student population, an increase of over 3,000 from the previous year.

We are deeply invested in setting up our students for a successful and fulfilling future. To achieve this, we believe that we must expose our scholars to meaningful career development opportunities throughout their time in DPS. Our full suite of programs helps students explore their career identity, see the relevance of what they’re learning in the classroom, build a professional network, and develop a post-secondary plan that aligns with their passions. Furthermore, our workforce efforts are positively impacting student attendance, graduation rates, and matriculation to college; and are known to be a youth violence prevention strategy .

The Career Development Team is committed to providing equitable programming and prioritizing underserved populations to eliminate persistent educational and economic gaps. We thank you for your continued support and collaboration as we expand our efforts and ensure Every Learner Thrives .

What Our Partners Say

“We love any chance to engage with students about careers. Even though generating excitement in middle school about a future job in water is certainly not the top of their wish list, [raising] awareness is what it’s all about.”

- Spark

“I love working with engaged and curious students! I also liked the idea of having mentoring groups with multiple students and mentors. This is some of the most meaningful volunteering I’ve gotten to do. ”

- Coach

“My favorite part about this event was working with the students and seeing the creative questions they came up with! It’s very fulfilling to be able to interact with the community and our future voters! ”

- Spark

“Working with our interns makes work fun and although it is very hands-on, they remind us of why we do it and how fun our work is.”

- Launch

“The thing I enjoyed most about being a [mentor] was getting to engage with someone on the cusp of getting ready to begin a new life chapter and being a point of reference and assistance as they get ready to transition. ”

- Coach

“10/10! This was an amazing experience and I am humbled to be working with such passionate, talented, creative youth. Being a supervisor taught me a lot about leadership.. and allowed me the opportunity to view my role and the work my company does in a new light.”

- Launch

I enjoyed building a connection with my students and helping them find their own path to success.

Student Stories

Sparking Passion in Our Youngest Students

In 2023-24, students in fourth and fifth grade at Kunsmiller Creative Arts Academy participated in several Spark Elementary experiences. During the series of activities provided by Spark staff, the fifth graders got to explore the flight attendant career. They played a cooperative game called Flight Attendant Frenzy to get a feel for what sorts of problems might arise on a flight and how the flight attendant team can work together to solve them.

A counselor at Kunsmiller had this to say about one of the students who participated in the activity:

Student shows excitement about careers he is discovering through the Spark (Elementary) Program.

"Today I witnessed a student who normally struggles with engagement and focus jump right into an activity with excitement and interest and it completely stopped me in my tracks. His teacher and I were both so excited to see his passion ignite when typically we struggle to get him involved with the class. Today reminded me how important it is to continue to try new things and expose our students to different ways of learning, because we may discover what will pull them in or excite them through the unexpected."

Igniting Career Aspirations

Ivan Hermosillo participated in several Spark Middle School events but the one that really grabbed his attention was the visit to the Denver Police Department which featured the work of the SWAT team. He had this to say about his experience:

“I really liked the training that the SWAT team put us through. I was planning to study computer system analysis, but now that we did the SWAT field trip I might want to study that.”

Ivan also said the Spark Program motivated him to do better in school.

“I used to have a lot of missing assignments, but I’ve been keeping up with my work so that I can go on these field trips. The trips have all been really fun with the activities that they have us do.”

Discovering Future Opportunities

Denver West High School students had the opportunity to visit the Tepeyac Community Health Center as part of the Xplore Program . Students had the chance to learn about this unique health center’s work for the community providing services ranging from physical and behavioral health to dental and pediatric services. Students were invited to ask the nurses, doctors, and staff questions about their career paths and their experiences working in the healthcare field. Students also learned how to take blood pressure and took a tour of the facility. After our visit, many students found themselves excited to pursue a career in the medical field and hoped to work at the health center in the future.

.Mentoring Taken to the Next Level

Aide Ramos, a senior at CEC.. was matched with Coach Mentor Jim Lucchesi, an Information Security Architect in the DPS Department of Technology Services. Together, they delved into Aide’s career and educational interests, focusing on cybersecurity. With Aide’s strong passion for the field, Jim arranged an internship that reinforced her enthusiasm and commitment to a career in cybersecurity. After completing the Coach Program, Aide reported having a clearer understanding of her career goals and opportunities, as well as increased confidence in pursuing a career in cybersecurity and technology.

Growing Our Own: DPS Technology Apprentice

Cruz Rivera, a student from West High School, started as an intern with the DPS Department of Technology Services (DoTS). He participated in the internship several times and then continued with the apprenticeship program when DoTS expanded its engagement in work-based learning to include this opportunity. As he enters his second year as an apprentice, Cruz has taken on a leadership role as a mentor for younger students participating in the internship program. Cruz graduated in May 2024 and received a full-ride scholarship to the University of Denver. He is taking a gap year to complete his apprenticeship and will attend college starting in the fall of 2025 .

Bringing Relevance to Academics

Sirius “Siri” Connally, a 12th grader at Northeast Early College, completed her internship at Hairworks, a long-standing hair salon in the Denver community, where her passion for cosmetology flourished. Having previously styled her own and family members’ hair, Siri chose Hairworks to gain formal training and experience in professional hair care techniques and entrepreneurship .

One of Siri’s greatest areas of learning was working with various hair textures and the products that work best for different hair types and textures. With the guidance of her supervisor and owner of Hairworks, Tracy Moore, she applied mathematical and science skills to innovatively approach this new area and thrived in her role. Siri also excelled in customer service, quickly becoming a favorite among clients who appreciated her bright and youthful energy; returning clients even requested her personally. Her experience at Hairworks inspired her to take a leap of faith in her own entrepreneurial journey and start a side business braiding hair, a passion she plans to continue while pursuing a college degree in psychology with a minor in education.

Innovation & Expansion

Spark Middle School Career Exploration Course

Building on the success of the pilot year, the Spark Career Course was expanded to two middle schools in the 2023-24 school year.

The course, designed to help students explore their strengths and interests while connecting them to real-world careers, was well-received. At one of the participating schools, the course’s impact was so positive that the school is now planning to offer it to all eighth-grade students moving forward, affirming the value it brings to students.

As we look ahead, the Spark team remains committed to expanding the course to a total of three schools in the 2024-25 school year, as initially planned. Additionally, we will continue to refine the course by enhancing its alignment with core academic standards and Career and Technical Education (CTE) standards to further integrate career exploration into students’ educational journeys.

Pathway Schools Initiative

DPS has 17 pathway, or alternative, high schools designed to provide support to students who thrive in smaller learning environments and would benefit from accelerated academics. Oftentimes, extra-curricular activities are limited in these settings; however, in the spring of 2024, the Career Development Team broadened its reach to include these schools in our work-based learning programs. Our efforts resulted in 15 career exploration and guest speaking events, six work readiness workshops and several internship opportunities . This initiative aligns with our ongoing efforts to provide equitable student access to all of our WBL programming and will continue to grow.

Build Your Own (BYO) Internship

While we serve an average of 500 students per year through our Launch Internship Program, it was important to develop an opportunity for more students to benefit from a meaningful, structured internship experience. The Build Your Own (BYO) Internship is a new innovation designed to empower students to take control of their learning and career development by allowing them to create their own internship experiences. By bridging the gap between classroom learning and the real world, BYO equips participants with the skills, knowledge, and confidence needed for a successful transition into the workforce. BYO internships are now an option for students across the district and were completed by 27 students in the pilot year.

Denver Youth Employment Program (DYEP)

In July 2024, DYEP joined the Career Development Team to round out our suite of services to DPS youth . In partnership with the City of Denver, DYEP offers 14 to 21-year-olds access to workforce development, career exposure, and opportunities to further their individual passions and goals through foundational work experience opportunities with local organizations, businesses and other high-growth industries. Program staff offer wrap-around services including financial literacy, job readiness training, and independent banking skills. As this important partnership continues in the years to come, we anticipate serving more Denver youth and engaging with new City agencies to enhance youth opportunities.

Two DYEP interns proudly represent the 20th Street Recreation Center.

Career Pathways Innovation (CPI) Grant

Through the support of a private, local funder, we are thrilled to announce that we have received a three-year, $1.9 million grant to enhance and expand our work-based learning programs, especially for underserved populations. Our goal is to create a more tightly integrated sequence of K-12 workbased learning experiences that build upon one another and provide students with meaningful opportunities across the age continuum that propel them toward a range of highopportunity careers that are aligned with their interests and strengths. A particular highlight is that this funding will support new staff and resources for our Spark Elementary Program enabling us to start career development work earlier with students across the district.

The Mentor Collaborative

In an effort to extend our reach to more youth beyond the direct services provided through the Coach Mentoring Program, we designed the Mentor Collaborative to partner with existing mentoring organizations that are currently serving DPS students. We partner with them to support the integration of career exploration and college and career planning within their existing services. In 2023-24, we entered our first year of partnership with Heart and Hand, a local, community-based organization focused on creating a nurturing environment and supporting career and college readiness for high school students. The success of this partnership demonstrated how collaboration between DPS and the community can create a more meaningful and impactful experience for students. We look forward to partnering with more organizations and serving more youth with career mentorship in the years to come.

Multi-Year & Significant Contributors

Our Multi-Year and Significant Contributors

Without the $532,000 in contributions from our partners, the quality and breadth of programming offered to students by the Career Development Team would not be possible. Several companies supported various WBL programs through their generous contributions or grants. In addition, 29 industry partners contributed nearly $80,000 to offset the cost of student fellowship awards.

Optimistic Closure

Mutual Admiration

Following an Xplore event at Automotive Evolution, one of the students remarked, “I’m looking into the NAPA Auto apprenticeship [they spoke about during today’s event]. Do you know today was the first time my dad told me he was proud of me? Because I finally feel like I have a plan and purpose . ”

Our Automotive Evolution partner, Dustin Olde, remarked, “I spent many years prior to my automotive career teaching what we called, at the time, ‘at-risk youth’. Those jobs were the toughest I ever did and I have nothing but admiration for all of you who are helping these young people find a path to success. You truly exemplify the strength we need in our communities and schools.”

Our Work In Real Time

As a North High School senior, Aden juggles a busy scheduleworking about 20 hours a week, managing school responsibilities, and preparing for college applications. Aden appreciates the flexibility DPS offers and the supportive nature of the team.

“One reason I love working at DPS is the understanding and community that goes into the team,” said Aden.

Aden first learned about the program through his graphic design teacher and followed up with a counselor for more information. After applying through CareerWise and interviewing for the DPS Graphic Design Apprentice position, Aden joined the team. During Aden’s time at DPS, he has worked on various projects, from designing logos to contributing to district reports. One of his favorite projects has been working on projects for the Sustainability team, showcasing his growth in skills and knowledge within graphic design. His work is inspired by his passion for graphic design and a clear vision for his future.

of Aden Trujillo, DPS Communications Apprentice

“I plan to go to college and major in Graphic Design and minor in Video Design/Editing, then after college I really want to get a job as a graphic designer with a well-known company. The apprenticeship program has really helped me to get the knowledge I need to become a graphic designer,” he said.
