Aged care homes

If you are unable to continue living independently at home, you may choose to move into an aged care home.

The Australian Government regulates and funds the provision of much of the aged care in Australia. ‘Aged care home’ is the term most commonly used, but you may also find this type of accommodation referred to as nursing home, aged care facility, residential aged care, or high and low care facility. All of these terms can be used interchangeably to describe the same type of living arrangement. Entry into a Government funded aged care home requires approval by an Aged Care Assessment Team (ACAT). There are also non Government funded aged care homes which are called supported or assisted living complexes. These do not require ACAT or Government approval. Where do I start? If you, or someone close to you, feel you are in need of some form of residential care, you can speak with your doctor, who can make initial contact with My Aged Care. You can also contact My Aged Care direct or a representative, like a family member or friend, can do this on your behalf. Call 1800 200 422 to organise an ACAT assessment.
