We call them pillars: Arts and Culture; Children and Education; Leadership and Public Policy; Health and Wellness; Energy and Environment. In reality, they are but your stories—those of talented artists, innovative medical professionals, environmental pioneers, dedicated public servants, engaged citizens, excited learners, and caring educators. In this report, we invite you to journey with us and discover the many ways that Detroit Public Television (DPTV) is turning everyday stories into thought-provoking content that showcases Detroit to the world and leads to positive outcomes in Southeast Michigan. This is no small feat. Thanks to the engagement of the members of our Board of Trustees whose leadership guides our vision, the trust bestowed upon us by viewers like you, and the commitment of our supporters and our staff, this year more than ever, DPTV has been able to create meaningful programs to serve viewers across all demographics, interests, geographies and platforms. This includes live and online stories dealing with returning veterans and their transition to civilian life, segments about the Great Lakes and Detroit on PBS NewsHour, as well as coverage of the Mackinac Policy Conference and other events, and meaningful health advice in Feel Grand with Jane Seymour. We have also focused our efforts on engaging the next generation of learners through various education initiatives such as Pre-School U and American Graduate, and our arts and cultural viewers through art segments of Detroit Performs shared with PBS stations. Through it all, we are forging new partnerships and collaborating with numerous organizations and stakeholders to engage in real dialogue about critical issues, so that we’re producing more than just great television—we are building pillars of success and making a lasting difference in Detroit and beyond. The Sphinx Organization
History of Detroit TV
Detroit Performs is the heart of DPTV’s commitment to celebrate arts and culture. In the Tuesday night TV series, viewers discover a wide variety of artists and inspiring stories, and the companion website, detroitperforms.org, helps people discover, share and participate in cool events in greater Detroit. Special editions this year included Dance on Detroit: A Maggie Allesee Celebration of Dance, and the Sphinx Stars talent competition.
SphinxCon was a three-day event in February 2014 that brought musicians, impressarios, and thinkers together to explore “empowering ideas for diversity in the arts.” Detroit Public TV provided a gavel-to-gavel live webcast of the conference to connect the event with a worldwide audience. DPTV also broadcast and streamed the 17th annual Sphinx Finals Concert from Detroit’s Orchestra Hall, showcasing young Black and Latino classical string players in concert.
The cast of characters who entered our living rooms through Detroit television is long and colorful. This one-hour documentary, produced in association with Michael Collins, Ed Golick, Bill Kubota and Tim Kiska, uses rare footage to recall Soupy Sales, Rita Bell, Sonny Elliot, Bill Kennedy and many other Detroit TV legends.
Il Volo This year marked the national broadcasts of two DPTV-produced specials with Italian teen tenors Il Volo. We are Love features performances of tracks from their album of the same name and includes the song that launched them to fame worldwide, “O Sole Mio.” In Buon Natale, the trio turns their vocal power to Christmas classics. Both specials were filmed in Miami, Florida, using the DPTV HD production truck.
Detroit Art City: The DIA Story This one-hour documentary from Detroit Public TV takes viewers behind the scenes to see how the DIA enlightened the art world with new thinking about how art is displayed and fought funding challenges with a successful millage campaign. The film is narrated by the late Pulitzer prizewinning writer and Detroit radio host, Angelo Henderson.
Daniel O’Donnell Stand Beside Me In this, the 13th PBS special that DPTV has produced with Daniel O’Donnell, the Irish crooner draws the audience into a celebration of Irish, country, gospel, rock, and movie popular songs. The concert was recorded at The Macomb Center for the Performing Arts. Other DPTV-produced entertainment specials included:
• The Jimmy Dean Show, a nostalgic return to the country singer’s 1960’s variety show. • Irish the Musical, a theatrical concert/musical about a struggling Irish musician. • The Chris Mann Christmas Special, in which the singer/song- writer celebrated the season.

FIRST Robotics
Ready to Learn
In September 2013, DPTV participated in a multi-hour national broadcast, American Graduate Day, that showcased success stories to help keep kids in school. In February 2014, DPTV brought together teachers, parents, and students in a 60-minute special to identify and address some of the problems facing Michigan schools. The town hall followed a series of community conversations on the same topic.
Michigan Governor Rick Snyder called DPTV’s coverage of this high school engineering competition “a rock show.” In April, DPTV provided live all-day webcast coverage of the FIRST in Michigan Robotics State Championship at Eastern Michigan University. Within a week, more than 1,100 people watched either the live stream or portions on demand. The action was edited into a one-hour special broadcast in May.
Building on our growing bank of relationships in the early childhood/ early learning community, DPTV secured a Corporation for Public Broadcasting grant to work with local educators to use technology with parents and students. This program strives to build early math skills, using apps related to the PBS program Peg + Cat.
In partnership with American Documentary POV, DPTV produced a short feature on the Detroit City Chess Club, where young people are building selfesteem and knowledge through the game of chess.
Career Lab In this 30-minute special, five young people show how they took summer jobs to a surprising next level. Host Stephen Henderson also talked with business leaders about how to attract and keep talent in metro Detroit.
You Be the Chemist Twenty-two of Michigan’s brightest middle school chemistry students put their knowledge on the line in the 2014 competition in a 60-minute special hosted by WXYZ meteorologist Chris Edwards. Congratulations to winner Max P., who went on to represent Michigan in the national finals.
Many Rivers to Cross In conjunction with the PBS series, Many Rivers to Cross with Henry Louis Gates, Jr., DPTV hosted a professional development workshop at the Charles H. Wright Museum for 200 educators. They received PBS resources related to the series for classroom use, and DPTV distributed information to connect teachers with Michigan’s African American history.

LEADERSHIP AND PUBLIC POLICY At Detroit Public TV, we’re relentless about “understanding the issues.” That’s why we listen to people in our community and use public media to help citizens make informed decisions. The Detroit Regional Chamber Mackinac Policy Conference DPTV produced 16 hours of live broadcast coverage over three days from The Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island, plus six additional hours of live online streaming coverage. The broadcast was carried live on WORLD 56.2, providing a unique look into the issues facing Michigan. Included was a daily half-hour highlight program carried on public television stations across the state. The program was also available for media outlets to use as a live video stream on their websites.
American Black Journal In April 2014, Stephen Henderson was awarded The Pulitzer Prize for his work as Columnist and Editorial Page Editor for the Detroit Free Press. Henderson brings his keen observations and deep ties to Detroit to every interview he conducts as host of American Black Journal, one of America’s longest running locally produced programs from an African American perspective. Watch it Sundays at 12:30 p.m. and Wednesdays at 7:30 p.m.
MiWeek
Saluting Our Veterans
Henderson is back Thursday nights at 7:30 p.m. as he joins Award-winning Journalist Christy McDonald and Detroit News Editorial Page Editor Nolan Finley for a lively review of the week’s events on MiWeek. The show’s focus starts in Detroit but grows to explore what’s happening in – and what the implications of Detroit’s story are for – Lansing and Michigan. McDonald, Finley and Henderson welcome your thoughts on current events. Join the conversation and connect with the MiWeek team on Facebook or Twitter.
DPTV, in partnership with the Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency, is working to support military veterans. In November, we provided a live webcast of Governor Snyder’s Veterans Summit. We also produced short videos with veterans who are working to demonstrate their skills to employers. DPTV was also chosen by The Corporation for Public Broadcasting to receive a “Veterans Coming Home” grant, to connect vets with services in their community.
Detroit Journalism Cooperative In early 2014, The Knight Foundation and Renaissance Journalism, a project of the Ford Foundation, tapped DPTV and four other non-profit media organizations to form the Detroit Journalism Cooperative to engage the public and tell the story of Detroit’s bankruptcy. With partners WDET, Michigan Radio, New Michigan Media, and the Center for Michigan’s Bridge Magazine, DPTV has been providing depth and context to the Detroit story on MiWeek and American Black Journal. Journalist Christy McDonald has also appeared regularly on PBS NewsHour to update the bankruptcy story. Coverage can be tracked on DPTV.org/DJC.

Secrets from The Love Doctor
The Ford Studio in DPTV’s Riley Broadcast Center was alive in June 2014 as in one week, our crew shot 13 half-hour episodes of a new public television series, Feel Grand, with award-winning actress, author, and heart-health activist Jane Seymour. Targeted to viewers aged 50-plus, Seymour and her medical expert guests explore a wide variety of topics to help you feel grand while growing older.
Oakland University Professor of Sociology Dr. Terri Orbuch, Ph.D. has emerged as one of the nation’s most in-demand relationship experts. In this DPTV special, which aired nationally, Dr. Orbuch draws on her years of research to reveal what makes a healthy relationship over time, how to keep it passionate, and why a strong relationship is vital to your physical and emotional growth.
In November 2013, DPTV produced an all-day live webcast for INNO-VENTION 2013: A Medi cal Mai n St r eet Conference, which focused on the interrelationship between medical devices and health IT, including the impact of mobile technology on the future of health care. The event, produced in partnership with Oakland County and organized by the Engineering Society of Detroit, was viewed in 37 states and throughtout Canada.
Heart 411
In the Pipeline
Heart disease is the #1 killer in the United States. In this DPTV national special, two of the nation’s top cardiac doctors, Marc Gillinov, MD, and Steven Nissen, MD, outline keys to preventing heart disease and stroke, and give viewers information they need to ask informed questions, understand treatment options, and make the best decisions for their health.
Watch for these documentaries coming from Detroit Public TV in 2015: Ride the Tiger explores Bipolar Disorder; and When I’m 65 will help folks think differently about retirement.
Vital Signs The second half-hour episode of this occasional series, produced in collaboration with the Detroit Wayne County Health Authority and MSU’s College of Osteopathic Medicine, focuses on attracting people to work in the health care field and demonstrates the career paths open to young people. DPTV also produced a discussion guide for teachers, counselors, and others to accompany the series. On a related topic, DPTV is participating in a “Skilled Trades Task Force” with the Southeast Michigan Council of Governments (SEMCOG) to explore awareness around employment opportunities that require some post-high school education, but not necessarily a four-year college degree.

ENERGY AND ENVIRONMENT From protecting the Great Lakes and natural resources to understanding our options for electricity, transportation and the essentials of life, Detroit Public TV is connecting people to information and ideas to help shape the future. Great Lakes Water Conferences In September 2013, DPTV produced four days of live coverage of three Great Lakes Water Conferences from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to explore the latest science and policy considerations for the Great Lakes. Topics included the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement, as well as concerns about invasive species, algae, chemical runoffs and urban farming. The webcasts and 30-minute nightly recap programs were made freely available to media outlets and public interest groups and were once again aired throughout the Great Lakes Basin on PBS stations and TV Ontario in Canada. Major funding was provided by the Erb Family Foundation.
Great Lakes Now DPTV continues to produce a number of solution-oriented specials to support our region’s most valuable resources. Topics in FY14 included: Investing in Nature; Freshwater and Farming; Northern Forests; Migratory Birds; and Summer Recreation. The entire series of videos is available on demand at video.dptv.org on the Energy and Environment channel. Among the primary partners in our ongoing Great Lake Now coverage is The Nature Conservancy.
Great Lakes Now Update
Beyond The Light Switch
In summer 2014, an algae crisis in Lake Erie disrupted the water supply for thousands of people in Ohio and Southeast Michigan. DPTV quickly went into production and produced a half-hour special to provide critical information about the algae bloom event and what could be done to prevent harmful effects and future outbreaks. Much of DPTV’s reportage was carried on PBS NewsHour. Detroit Public TV has also been producing a weekly series of oneminute spots, distributed throughout Michigan, that help educate the public about The Great Lakes.
Winner of the duPont-Columbia University award for journalistic excellence, the first installments of Beyond the Light Switch explored the future of electricity. In a new episode in 2015, series host, Scientific American’s David Biello, journeys through the Middle East and across the United States to examine America’s switch to electrification – especially in transportation to move people and goods – as a key strategy in reducing our foreign oil dependence while achieving our economic, environmental and energy security goals.
Energy 2030 In March 2013, DPTV produced live streaming coverage of the Alliance to Save Energy’s Energy 2030 strategic meeting at the Erb Institute at the University of Michigan Ross School of Business. DPTV’s Georgeann Herbert has also been working with the Michigan Economic Center, as part of a Blue Economy task force, helping to chart the course of Michigan’s economic development future in water.

Awarded “Best Playlist” by Hour Detroit, WRCJ 90.9 FM is Detroit’s “classical days and jazzy nights” public radio station with a mission to create musical experiences for everyone. Highlights this year included live concerts by the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Ann Arbor Symphony and Michigan Opera Theatre. Kickstart Your Summer in May 2014 was an all-day live event and broadcast at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History featuring more than 30 Detroit area cultural groups to showcase summer learning opportunities in the arts for young people. Students for licensee Detroit Public Schools produce a number of programs and WRCJ also provides airtime to many non-profit arts and cultural organizations. Discover playlists and more at wrcjfm.org.
Once again, the saga of the Crawley family held viewers in its grip as Downton Abbey kicked off Season 4 in January and continued its run as PBS’ most popular series. Evidence of the series’ popularity was seen in two DPTV-hosted kickoff screening events: one at The Maple Theater in Bloomfield drawing 300 DPTV friends and the other at Ann Arbor’s Michigan Theater with a packed house of 1,700, many wearing their Victorian finest and channeling their favorite Downton character.
DPTV’s Society for Excellence and WRCJ’s Kresge Society recognize individuals who contribute $1,000 or more to support public TV programs or classical and jazz music on the radio. Membership includes invitations to a variety of special events, where like-minded folks share their love for public broadcasting.
DPTV Kids Club Learning is fun. Just ask the thousands of children who attend Kids Club Live every summer in Royal Oak, where they enjoy a show by Barney the Dinosaur, meet PBS KIDS characters and engage in fun activities. The same is true at DPTV’s Fall Festival in Wixom and at Sesame Street Live at Detroit’s Fox Theatre in January. For many it’s their first exposure to a live theatrical performance.
Genealogy Roadshow In July, PBS traveled to Detroit’s Indian Village to tape an episode of this series exploring ancestral mysteries. Viewers nationwide watched as Ford Motor Company’s first female design engineer learned details of her parents’ secret World War II activities, a Mexican-American woman discovered the truth about her family’s origins in Michigan, and a husband’s amateur sleuthing confirmed his wife’s connection to a legendary explorer.
