Dr. Chris Stout has quite the resume – a clinical psychologist by trade, successful businessman, and the founding director of the Center for Global Initiatives. We’re only really scratching the surface here, as Chris has even found his way onto the World Economic Forum’s list of 100 Global Leaders for Tomorrow in the past. He’s clearly a busy guy with very little time to spare, but that hasn’t stopped him from having some fun.

Being an avid motorcycling enthusiast, he took a Ducati Monster S2R from 2005 and turned it into the beastly cafe racer shown above. The project came together over a five-year period with the help of several craftsmen, and the outcome is absolutely mind-blowing to say the least. Nicknamed the Double Espresso, this bad boy is based on an already-capable platform and improved in countless ways.

Starting with the motorcycle’s L-twin powerplant, the cam timing belts were replaced and encased in some open covers. In addition, the air intake gained

high-grade air filtration technology from K&N, and the standard exhaust system made way for a Termignoni substitute with twin carbon fiber mufflers. The ECU got a Rexxer reflash in order to make the most of these new items.

Chris had the clutch converted to a slipper setup with Barnett plates and hydraulic actuation, then it came time to see what the bike was capable of on the dyno. It made a stout (no pun intended) 83 hp and 57 pound-feet (77 Nm) of torque at the wheel, more than what it was previously able to produce at the crank. On the other hand, the S2R came with excellent brakes and suspension straight out of the box.

These have therefore remained mostly unchanged, but the forks are now hidden behind a pair of beefy covers from Paolo Tex. A fresh LED headlight is placed between them up top, right in front of a thoroughly updated cockpit area featuring a digital LCD display and Vortex clip-ons kitted with adjustable CRG control levers.

Making our way rearward, we’re greeted by a surprising amount of stock equipment, as our protagonist decided to keep the Monster’s factory fuel tank, seat, and tail section. He did employ a rear fender elimination kit from Zenmoto, though, while balancing out the visual mass down low with a rad GSG belly pan. Complementing the Double Espresso’s clip-ons are CNC-machined rearsets from Gotham Cycles.

To finally take his project across the finish line, Dr. Chris Stout had the motorcycle wrapped in a gorgeous livery with Italian flavors. It employs a satin-red base on the belly pan, fuel tank, and tail section, with the latter two also sporting a white stripe that runs from front to back up top. Pinstriping done in the colors of the Italian flag accompany it on the right, and the fork covers wear Stout lettering over a black background.
