Iwouldmuchhavepreferredtowriteanarticle,dotheresearch,ordo theworkbehindsomething,butinitially,thethoughtofpresentingor goinginfrontofanaudiencewasterrifying.Andthatbuiltuponitself andbecamemoreandmorecomfortable.Andthen,whenyoudothatin theauspicesofstartingtomakethingslikeanon-profitorabusinessor astartuporadepartment,thosekindsofleadershipskillsbegintoget honedalittlebitmore.

At what age did you notice or have an inclination that you had a leadership skill? And did you think you'd end up leading within social responsibility?

Itwasprobablyundergraduate.Igotinvolvedinaservicefraternity, andpartofitsobligationwastodoservice-orientedthings.AndIfound thatitwasjustdelightful.Iwasalwaysprettyquietandbookishinhigh schoolanddidstuff,butitwasalwaysbehindthescenes,andIthink thathelpedgetmeoutofmyshyness.

Ijokeaboutthis,I'vewrittenaboutthis,andIrefertomyselfasan accidentalhumanitarian.IverymuchwishIcouldtellpeoplethatthis issomethingthatwasapassionofmineforever,springingfromthe wombandthenwantingtodoallthiswork,whichwasnotthecase.I hadverydifferentkindsofcareeraspirationsthatevolvedandchanged overtime,thankgoodness. Andthen,byastorythat'stoolongforthisconversation,Ihadan experiencethatchangedme,turnedalightbulbon,andsortofhelped metakethefootoffacertainkindofdirectionofthegaspedalofmy career.Andthenshiftingintomaybeamorescenicroute,sotospeak, tokeepmycarmetaphorgoingoffindingthattherewasgreatjoyand pleasureinhelpingothersinawaythatwasn'tjust,youknow,Iwas trainedasaclinicalpsychologistandworkedinpracticeanddidalotof things.Itwasobviouslyinthehealthcare-and-helping-orientedsphere. ButIfoundthattobeverydifferent. Youdiditasyourjob,yourcareer,whichisexcellentandacceptable forpeople,butyoustillneededtohaveanincomewiththatandafeefor-servicekindofcircumstance.Thehumanitarianworkpulledme awayfromthat,andIfeltthattheleadershipaspectsofhowIdidthat andthentryingto,we'reanall-volunteerorganization;noneofusare Home My Network Jobs

Youcan'tbeliketheWizardofOz,managingthingsfrombehindthe curtain.Youhavetobeoutthereandoutfrontandkindofacovian perspectiveofstewardleadershipofbeingouttheretoserveothersand dothatnotjustintheworkyoudo,butalsowiththestaffyouhave.

IjokewithsomeofmyfoundersthatIprobablywouldn'thavedoneit ifIhadknownhowhardthiswouldhavebeen.SoIfeellikemany thingsthatI'vebeenverynaiveabouthaverearedtheirheadsinfor profitstartupbusinessesthatI'vebeenapartof,aswellasinthenotfor-profithumanitarianspace.SojustreallybeingsortoflikeaMr. MagooandnotknowingwhatI'mgettingmyselfinto,butgenerally,I hope51%ofthetime,havingagoodoutcome.

You founded the Center for Global Initiatives, which is a top-rated non-profit. Congratulations! Was that something that you longed to do, or that you fell into? Also, share a little about the change you imparted to the children in Tanzania. IhaddonealotofworkwiththeWorldEconomicForumsomeyears back,andearlier,youandIweretalkingaboutDr.Oz,andthat's actuallyhowheandIfirstgottogether,andwe'vedoneacoupleof projectstogether.They'reparalleltracks,withmultiplethingsgoingon simultaneouslythatcametogethertodotheworkinTanzaniaand createtheCenter. Thespecificsofthatisthat,backtobeingnaive,Ihadnoideahowto puttogetheranon-profit.Ihadnoideawhata501(c)(3)wasinthe UnitedStates.Ihadnoideaofconstructingaboardoranyotherkindof nutsandboltsthatgointothat.

IwasfortunatetohaveamentorwhoI'mstillsoclosewithandso appreciativeof,whoisanattorney,asharpHarvardLawguy,andhe said,youknow,you'refundingalltheworkthatyou'redoing,you're supportingthisprojectinTanzaniathatyoureferenced.Andhesaid youcouldn'tsustainthatunlessyouhaveanoilwellinthebackyard,a trustfund,orsomethingIdidn'tknowabout.Youcan'tjustkeepdoing thisyourselfallthetime. Hewasright,andIsaidyeah,absolutely,sowhatdoIdo?Hesaidto contacthiswife,alsoasharpattorney,andshesaidshe'llhelphimput togetherallthedocumentation,theincorporation,andthesubmission forthe501(c)(3).Sothemechanicsofthatgotstarted.

TothepartofputtingtogetheraboardandtheworkinTanzania,Imet afellowsomeyearsbackwhenIwasonaclimbdoingKilimanjaro.He andIkeptintouchovertheyears.Periodically,there'dbedifferent kindsofproblems.Wewerepre-internetandemailandallthat.We wouldsendeducationalmaterialstochildren,whichbecametoo expensiveandproblematic.Thenwestartedcreatinganaccountand sendingoverfundssotheycoulddowhattheyneeded.Healsobecame achaplainattwohospitals,sowehelpedsupportsomeoftheir medicationandnurses'training. Andthenwealsohadanorphanagewhereheworked.Again,backto Mr.Magoo,Ihadnoideawhathedid.Ihadnoideaaboutthenutsand boltsofwhattheorphanageneeded.Thatwasnotmyjob.Hewould explainwhatwaswhat,andmyjobbecame,howcanwesupportthis? SoIwenttomycollaborators,whowereprincipalsatschools,early childhooddevelopmentspecialists,teachers,andeducators,andsaid, here'sourproject.Weneedtoputtogetheraschool,akindergartenfor children.Andweputtogetherapacketandsentitover,andhethen tookittotheMinistryofEducation.Theyacceptedit,andwecould formakindergartenandbuilditphysicallywithbrickandmortar,staff itwithfacultyandteachers,andthenequipitwithmaterialsanddesks andthingslikethat.Andthat'sbeenoursweetspotofsupport:thatand thetwohospitals,forthelast17years. Weresourcetohelpmakethoseconnectionsandprovidethetoolsto makehumanitarianworklesscomplicated.IfyoulookattheIRSrules tobecomea501(c)(3),they'realittledauntingandarenoteasytodo. Ohmygoodness,yeah!Itendtohaveprobablytoomanyinterestsand things,andalotoftimeswhenI'minmyfor-profitsideworkingwith startups,Igetsobroadbase,andit'ssortoflike,hey,wecandothis, andhey,wecandothis,andhey,let'sstartabandandhey,let'sdoall thesekindsofthings.It'sjustallsoexciting.Andyouknow,thebright sparklysomethingcatchesmyattention.

ThereareavarietyofthingsthatIhavelittleexperiencewithand minimalskillsetsin,butthosearemygoals.Ihaveacuriosityabout certainthingsthatgetputonalistandmaybenotfortomorrowornext year,butatsomepointinthefuture,thatmightbesomethingthatthey canlearnalittlebitmoreabout.I'malwaysinterestedinlearningmore andseeinghowthingsthatseemalittletangentialandobliquetowhat I'mdoingorperhapswillnotbeadditivetoday.Still,theymightbe additiveinthefutureandsomenewapproachorskillsetornew technologytobeabletouse.
