LETTER from our EDITOR As we begin the new term with our new board, I am pleased to announce our firstever monthly newsletter. As your Public Relations chair, it is my duty to create a newsletter that will capture the essence of Circle K International. Our monthly newsletter serves as a valuable record for our year of service and provides a framework for every aspect of our club. Here you’ll find details on our service events, meetings, fundraisers, and socials. The concept behind our newsletter is ENVISION; envision a world built on service. We seek to bring out the inner visionary in every member and inspire those to become future leaders. The first step is envisioning; the second step is bringing those ideas to life. Hopefully our newsletter will inspire you to get involved and get engaged with our club. Always pursue your passions and never give up! Peace out.

Love Anthony White

Somethings in life call for brevity, but when it comes to personal descriptions I've always found it difficult to keep things short and sweet. How does one distill the entirety of a person into a few brief sentences, without feeling like you've missed something? I wonder about that sometimes, in my capacity as a writer. I like to write. It's a passion of mine. I'm a Computer Science major and an English minor, what may seem like a weird combination, but it all goes back to writing. I write code and I write words, and through both I have the potential to create worlds. Thanks to Circle K I've had the opportunity to connect my passion for writing to another passion of mine: service, the realization of mankind's potential. I wrote a short story once for kids during one of our service projects. That sense of fulfillment when you can touch the lives of others through something you're truly passionate about; there's nothing quite like it. As your current Technology Chair and a member of your 2015-2016 Appointed Board, I only hope that I can help create a Circle K experience for you that brings out your passions, like it did for me.

I am a 4th year Business Management Major. I’ve been in Circle K for 3.5 years now serving as the past Fundraising Chair and Past President. Yes I’m an oldie, but I believe with age comes wisdom. So if you ever need advice, I’m your guy. I enjoy watching chick flicks, playing basketball and League of Legends. I am excited to serve as your new Spirit/Social Co-Chair. So lets make it a great one!

Hiya! My name is Kristi and I am one of your Social and Spirit Chair alongside the adorable Chai. I am from the Bay Area, a pre-graphic design major and a professional fangirl. I’ve been in Circle K for one semester, and although I was never part of Key Club in High School nor the Kiwanas Family, Circle K has captured my heart through the passion of service. My job is to make everyone feel welcomed and accepted in order to give you a space of total freedom to be yourself, just like how Circle K has done it for me. On top of that I plan socials and promote cheer. FUN FACTS: I love art and rock music, my favorite anime is Bleach, Logan Lerman and Legolas are bae, ice tea is life, Horror movies are funny, I want a panda and my all time dream is to fill my bed with kawaii plushies.

Hey guys! My name is Michelle and I am your PR chair for this term. I am super excited to be back for another term and can’t wait to accomplish amazing things will all of you. I am currently a second year pre-nursing major(>.< the stress) . I love Kpop so if any of you need a person to fangirl with I’m your girl to go to. I am super excited to get to know all of you and I can’t wait to make even more amazing memories this coming year.

Ni Hao. I’m Anthony, you’re ethnically ambiguous public relations chair. I am a graphic design major as well as the designer and editor for this monthly newsletter. I am currently finishing my 3rd year at CSULB. In my free time I enjoy watching anime, dancing, venting my emotions on tumblr, and fantasizing about Zayn Malik. I love sushi, dim sum, and korean barbecue. I am an INFJ personality type. I am compassionate, creative, sassy, and eccentric. I believe that the world is full of possibilities. I look forward to getting to know each and every one of you this year!

HISTORY Circle K is the largest collegiate community service, leadership development, and friendship organization in the world. Circle K clubs are organized and sponsored by a Kiwanis club on a college or university campus. It is a self-governing organization and elects its own officers, conducts its own meetings, and determines its own service activities. Circle K is an international community service organization with over 13,250 members worldwide in 17 nations, including the Bahamas, Barbados, Canada, Jamaica, St. Lucia, Colombia, Philippines, Nigeria, Ecuador, Malaysia, Panama, Dominican Republic, Taiwan, Antigua, Australia, Suriname, and the United States. Circle K blends community service and leadership training with the opportunity to meet many other college students at service projects, conferences, and conventions. CSULB Circle K has had a great tradition of excellence since it was chartered on November 6, 1958. Very rare will you find a CKI club that has maintained its charter for that long. We remain the oldest organization at Long Beach State. We are also the second oldest chartered club in our District of California-Nevada-Hawaii or CNH. Throughout the years the club has produced countless leaders ranging from club officers to even international officers. In addition the club has won countless awards based on the clubs quality of production. Our club has even generously donated the statue of Prospector Pete to the Long Beach Campus.

DCON by Natalie Mann

DCON was an amazing experience. I didn’t realize people could be so kind. ~Paula Le I loved DCON! It melted my heart like cheesy garlic bread. ~Sean Villaverde DCON was the bomb diggity. I’ll never forget all the memories and experiences I gained from this event. ~Sean Nguyen Things might not always turn out as planned, but one thing’s for sure; I got my groove on and looked fierce. ~Julina Chhith Man oh man am I gonna miss DCON! It was exciting, informative, and super fly! ~Natalia Mann We keep it classy and stay fresh. I’m glad I got to represent my club that day. ~Adriana Sanchez I love my home club! Metro pride forever! Over and out. ~Michelle Chung My heart will never be the same. I shed manly man tears of joy and pain. ~Johnny Cao Nguyen

DCON 2015 was a memorable weekend full of tears, bonding, and celebration of past achievements and new beginnings. At DCON, we elected our 2015-2016 District Board and attended various workshops. These workshops focused on the tenants of service, leadership, and fellowship. Many of us came out of these workshops with more knowledge on how to be the best servant leaders that we can be. CSULB accomplished great milestones and took away a Distinguished Club Improvement Award. Our traditional scrapbook also took home first place. It was a surreal moment for everyone. Prior to hearing the results, every member joined hands awaiting to hear whether or not we would place. After third and second place were called, we were discouraged. Once we heard first place, we all jumped and celebrated. Haminton Lam, our scrapbook chair, even broke down into tears. We all joined in a big group hug. This was definitely one of the biggest highlights of the weekend. Aside from the workshops, general session, and election process, we spent a lot of quality time together as a club. We explored the talent show and alternate activities together, had great conversations, and created amazing memories at this District Convention. Ultimately, DCON gives you insight into the massive impact that Cal-Nev-Ha Circle K makes in the world. DCON also reminds us that the difference we make starts with our home clubs and local communities. It is incredible to celebrate the amazing achievements of each club and countless, passionate Circle K members at DCON. I hope that many more members from CSULB Circle K will be able to experience these wonderful moments at DCON 2016.

SHELTER RESOURCE BANK DONATION SORTING by Anthony White The six of us went to the S. Mark Taper Foundation Shelter Resource Bank to help sort women’s clothing for the homeless. The S. Mark Taper Foundation Shelter Resource Bank is a Los Angeles County organization that collects clothing (surplus inventory) from retail outlets, manufacturers, wholesalers, and other organizations. They keep them stored in cardboard boxes before distributing them to homeless agencies. We cut off tags, folded, and then put the clothing into piles of ten before putting them into boxes. Half of us cut off tags while the other half folded. We alternated roles at whim. There were many tshirts with humorous slogans on them, ranging from “it’s not hanging it’s wine flu” to “hands off the bump.” These distribution efforts allow many homeless people to gain access to clothing that would otherwise be unaffordable for them.

KIWANIS ONE DAY by Sean Villaverde, Georgina Corral, and Anthony White There aren’t many things in the world that sleep deprived college students will wake up early for, let alone at five in the morning on a Saturday. Kiwanis One Day is one of those very special events, and to be honest, it was entirely worth it. Once we got passed our initial drowsiness, being up that early was actually kind of nice, especially with the knowledge that we were doing something so worthwhile. When we arrived at Downey High School (the event location), we first assisted with all of the preparations and set up with local Kiwanis. Key Club, and Circle K members to raise awareness and knowledge about our district’s Pediatric Trauma Program. Our dragon mascot helped us attract adults and children alike with its contagious charm. When the event officially began, our Circle K members manned different booths in the event and instructed children on numerous safety issues like bike safety, pool safety, safety at home and on the playground, safety with pets, and more. This event coincided with the City of Downey’s 22nd Annual Street Faire. The bouncy houses from the city fair helped attract families to our free event; the close proximity from the city faire also provided a novelty area for us to take our lunch break.

I Dig Long Beach by Natalie Mann

I Dig Long Beach is a recurring event that aims to plan 6,000 drought-resistant trees in seven years. Organizations in the community like Circle K plant these trees in an effort to reduce the urban heat island effect, to reduce air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions, and to increase the city’s urban forest. Together, we planted one tree and assisted other groups in planting their trees as well. We named our tree MC Hammy after Haminton Lam – the true MVP of planting this tree. Overall, this project will create more friendly pedestrian environments, encourage walking and biking, and help to improve watershed conditions by creating new tree wells in parkways.

Pancake Breakfast by Natalie Mann

Early Friday morning, Janet and I set out on an adventure to help the Kiwanis Club of Cypress with their “Breakfast with MOM” event. The event focused on serving pancake breakfasts to countless families. We joined forces with CSUF Circle K, UCI Circle K, and Saddleback College Circle K to help the Kiwanis Club of Cypress prepare and execute the pancake breakfast. To help set up, we helped make and taste test hot chocolate that would be served at the drink station. We also rolled silverware to hand out to individuals when they received their plates. Prior to the start of the event, the Kiwanians made sure to feed all of the volunteers. It gave us time to eat and to bond with other Circle K members. Once we finished eating, we helped make sure that the event was running smoothly. Janet and I handed out syrup to people who wanted it for their pancakes. We had the opportunity to interact with many of the

PET LITERACY by Janet Haro

Many animals need homes and come in fearful of the world. One way we can help them feel a bit more secure and safe in their environment is through comforting them by reading. The process of reading requires a commitment to the animal itself. When they hear a soothing voice it reminds them that there are still loving people in the world, in contrast with those who beat up animals and use them as bait. This event really opened my eyes to the hardships that animals go through. There was even a dog with its face chewed up. The poor creature looked sad and honestly done with life. Going to these events is a meaningful experience and allows us to gain a new perspective and have a different outlook on life. Even the smallest things you do can have a huge impact.

Bolsa CHica Wetlands Resotration by RIchelle Son An event hosted by the Bolsa Chica Conservancy in Huntington Beach, Bolsa Chica Wetlands Restoration is aimed to restore and preserve the wetlands for years to come. This event starts at 9:30am and tentatively ends around noon time. Volunteers, young and old, adorn bright orange vests and gardening gloves while hiking down the paths of the wetlands to remove invasive species, such as sea rockets and ice plants. These invasive species are detrimental to the growth of California-native plants which are supposed to thrive in the wetlands ecosystem. Throughout the event, CKI volunteers venture up and down the banks of the wetlands, removing these invasive plants as well as picking up trash left on the side of the highway. Volunteers collected these plants in trash bags and loaded the materials on to a truck bed upon completion and rewarded themselves with a relaxing stroll back to the conservancy where they removed their gloves and vests.

MEALS ON WHEELS by Sean Villaverde Not everyone has the benefit of being able to purchase their own meals. The sick, the elderly, the disabled; these are all examples of individuals who are physically incapable of doing so. One of Circle K's prerogatives as a service organization is to serve those who cannot serve themselves for whatever reason, and to provide for those less fortunate than one should ever be in an ideal world. For this reason, one of our few continuing service projects is Meals on Wheels, where we volunteer with the titular organization which delivers meals to those who need them most. This particular service project occurs every other Friday around 7:30 in the morning. While the earliness may seem daunting, it truly is worth it. Just the knowledge alone that you're helping the helpless get the meals they need is worth all of the early mornings in the world, but if you like you can even sign up to be a friendly visitor and see the smiling faces of the people who use Meals on Wheels, smiles you helped deliver.

RIBBON MAKING

GREAT TEX MEX GRILL FUNDRAISER

by Natalie Mann

by Nich Dinh

To help fundraise for Relay for Life, many of us got together in the library basement to make bows to sell. Although it was a learning process, Nich tried to teach us how to make the bows based on the time he spent with Kat – a true bow master. We each had our own strengths, and some of us spent time cutting fabric while others asse

Our first fundraiser to start off the 2015 - 2016 term! We planned for a month with the restaurant owners to make sure we had a great turn out on April 13th. With flyers made by the club, we reached out to the Long Beach community and to our fellow CKI clubs like CSUDH and ECC. Although the Great Mex Grill in Long Beach is a little food joint it has BETTER food than your Baja Fresh's and Rubio's COMBINED. CSULB CKI packed the establishment with customers and everyone was content with their food and service. CSULB CKI received 20% of each purchase.

UNFORGETTABLE MEMORIES

Relay For Life by Natalie Man Relay for Life was definitely an event full of learning moments. Initially, it took many of us to bring together various items to set up. A lot of other organizations had very organized, interesting booths. Many of us were not familiar with how to prepare for Relay for Life, but we tried to make the most of what we had. Axl came to the rescue by helping us get a table, chairs, and tent together at our station. We had our Circle K banner and made impromptu signs for our otter pops, bows, and bracelets. Even though not everything went perfectly, we learned so much to help us better prepare for next year’s Relay for Life. Throughout the day, we were able to sell quite a few items to contribute to our donations to the American Cancer Society. Although many of us came and went throughout the day, a lot of us were able to walk the course together or to spend time at our booth. We definitely bonded and had deep conversations. We were even joined by our Past Lt. Governor, Brandon Baello. We also had people walk by who were interested in potentially joining Circle K, which was super exciting for us! Relay for Life was a fun event for a great cause, and it was definitely nice to participate in the event with other organizations that care about making a difference.

CSULB CIRCLE K BANQUET by Natalie Mann

Banquet was a night full of mixed emotions. Initially, it felt stressful and hectic since it started quite late. However, everything got better as the night progressed. We had many special guests. We were joined by our Kiwanis Advisor, Manuel Campos, and our Region Advisor, Armando Velazquez. In addition, we were joined by our immediate past and present Metro Lt. Governors, Brandon Baello and Josef Madrigal, along with other wonderful Circle K members from CSUDH, CSUN, ECC, and UCLA. Banquet consisted of tons of reflection on the 2014-2015 term. Tears were shed and amazing individuals were recognized with awards for their achievements. Brandon retired the 20142015 board and Josef installed the 2015-2016 board. Banquet signified closure for the 2014-2015 term and the official start to the 2015-2016 term. The night was also full of great performances. Kat and Julina did a KPOP dance together, Sean Villaverde and Julina collaborated for an amazing drum performance, and Johnny and Bryan made people swoon with their beautiful voices. The lip sync battle between the old and new executive boards ushered in many epic emotions and lots of laughter. As we were going through our songs, Axl surprised Janet by lip syncing and serenading Janet to Sam Smith’s “Lay Me Down.” It was the sweetest thing, and the entire room was just in awe. Every single person brought it - whether it was Eddie’s great dance moves, Johnny’s incredible take on “Lips are Movin’,” RIchelle’s piano playing to “A Thousand Miles,” or Hannah’s improv on “My Heart Will Go On” – everything turned out to be pretty entertaining. By the end, we all sang the lyrics to “I Want It That Way” together. It was definitely the most beautiful thing to hear everyone sing along to the words of the best pop song in history. We also auctioned off dates and favors from the new executive board. Although we were all sold, Nich was still quite bitter about only selling for $20. By the end of the night, we were all exhausted but all smiles because of how much fun we had. Many of us took lots of pictures and all of the couples even came together for a prom-like photo! Clearly, banquet was a memorable night for us and it would not have been possible without all of the hard work of our 2014-2015 executive board.

SPRING DCM by Natalie Mann The first DCM of the 2015-2016 term took place at the Bellflower Kiwanis Hall on April 12th. It was Easter-themed and we started the DCM with an Easter Egg Hunt activity. Members were split up into groups with people from different schools. Each group was assigned a certain color egg to look for throughout the Kiwanis Hall. In each egg, there were pairs of certain colored Starbursts. The colors of the Starbursts corresponded to certain icebreaker questions that groups had to answer together. It was a great way for members to get to know fun facts about one another.

Aside from international, district, and club business, LTG Josef also revealed that the divisional theme was Greek mythology and that our tagline is “Metro: Where Service is Legendary.” We also got to bond with encouragement cards that members were able to write to one another. In addition to the business and bonding of the DCM, we had a small table top service project in which we wrote encouragement letters to participants of this summer’s Special Olympics. Overall, this event truly embodied Circle K’s tenants of service, leadership, and fellowship.

Compton Initiative by Kristi Parada Compton Initiative is a 40 year commitment to restore the Compton community. They do so by painting murals, cleaning and painting schools and houses as well as building gardens. Before we began our task, we were given a delightful breakfast, the best breakfast given so far at any early service event. They had a variety of bagels, muffins, yogurt, fruit such as bananas and oranges, coffee and orange juice. It was truly exquisite. A speech was then given to commemorate the event and the volunteers who showed to help renovate Compton. Our task was to clean a backyard of a house that was filled with scraps of wood, metal, rocks and even dead animals. The biggest accomplishment was moving a large pile of said things to the garbage truck. It took countless routes and teamwork to do so. Many different kinds of people where at this event, from middle school children to other CKI families such as UCLA and ECC. Not only did we strengthen our CSULB CKI bond, but we strengthen our ties with our CKI families. It was an event I would never forget and I can’t wait to attend the next Compton Initiative event.

JULINA CHHITH

FEATURED March was the last month for our previous president Julina. In spite of all the adversity she has faced, she has always found a way to overcome it. She is a KPOP lover, introvert, and selfproclaied kawaii princess. A graphic design major, she’s been in Circle K since her freshman year and will be starting her 5th year at CSU Long Beach next semester. She was often seen interacting with general members and making them feel welcomed and at home. In additional to these facts, she is also very fashionable. Known for her dark, monochromatic sense of fashion, she creates a presence that is both mysterious yet approachable. She has a feverish hatred of crocs, shoes which go against everything that she stands for. Every now and then she’ll dye her hair a new color, shedding off a previous layer and taking on a new one. Her compassion is contagious. She enjoys hand-crafting items such as bows and dolls. As her term ran up, she passed on the mantle to Natalie Mann, who now assumes the role of president. You can still find Julina at general meetings and service events because service never sleeps! And neither does Julina hehe.
