As a result of the study of the necessity and the current situation of the Olympic swimming pools in Romania, I propose the creation of an Olympic swimming pool in Botosani, a city with 100,000 inhabitants, which does not have a functional swimming pool.
Como resultado del estudio de la necesidad y la situación actual de las piscinas olímpicas en Rumania, propongo la creación de una piscina olímpica en Botosani, una ciudad con 100.000 habitantes, que no tiene una piscina funcional.
“There are a few private pools in the city, but no Olympic pool. For the latter, a suitable location has already been identified near Mihai Eminescu Park.“
“Hay algunas piscinas en la ciudad, pero ninguna olímpica. Por esta razón, una ubicación adecuada ya se ha encontrado cerca del Parque Mihai Eminescu.“
The “Mihai Eminescu” Central Park attracts a special interest in the central area of the city, being of maximum interest, and it is located on an axis linking the Primăverii housing estate (where 50,000 inhabitants live) with the Central Area (The old historical center of the city). This axis attaches great importance to the park and benefits from the location of sports facilities within the recreational area and within the city.
El Parque Central “Mihai Eminescu” atrae un interés especial en el área central de la ciudad, siendo de máximo interés, y está ubicado en un eje que une la urbanización Primăverii (donde viven 50,000 habitantes) con el Área Central (El antiguo centro histórico de la ciudad). Este eje concede gran importancia al parque y se beneficia de la ubicación de las instalaciones deportivas dentro del área recreativa y dentro de la ciudad.
Creating an Olympic Basin on this site aims to revitalize the area. The attitude adopted in the study considers both the integration of the past and the present, but also the need to extend green spaces within the city, the construction of the Olympic Basin wishing to be in close connection with the context. This also includes the possibility of extending the green space and integrating the park into the project.
La creación de una piscina olímpica en este sitio tiene como objetivo revitalizar el área. La actitud adoptada en el estudio toma en consideración tanto la integración del pasado como del presente, pero también la necesidad de extender los espacios verdes dentro de la ciudad, la construcción de la Piscina Olímpica estando en fuerte relación con el contexto. Esto también incluye la posibilidad de ampliar el espacio verde e integrar el parque en el proyecto.
The most important thing about building a sports program is to create a flow of people in the area, acting as an urban catalyst and away from hosted sports. The ensemble, in addition to the main basin function, will include various adjacent spaces that will ensure the continuous operation of the spaces.
Lo más importante sobre la construcción de un programa deportivo es crear un flujo de personas en el área, actuando como un catalizador urbano y lejos de los deportes alojados. El conjunto, además de la función principal de la piscina, incluirá varios espacios adyacentes que garantizarán el funcionamiento continuo de los espacios.

The diving tower has five platforms at heights of 5 m, 7.5 m, 10 m and 27 m. The dimensions, heights and distances between the platforms are regulated by the International Swimming Federation (FINA), according to FINA FACILITIES RULES 2015-2017, FR14.
La torre de salto de agua tiene cinco plataformas a alturas de 5 m, 7,5 m, 10 my 27 m. Las dimensiones, alturas y distancias entre las plataformas están reguladas por la Federación Internacional de Natación (FINA), de acuerdo con FINA FACILITIES RULES 2015-2017, FR14.
The concept of the project starts from the image of an obelisk. The structure is obtained according to the principle of the trilithic system and is achieved using only one type of stone material for both vertical and horizontal elements.
El concepto del proyecto parte de la imagen de un obelisco. La estructura se obtiene según el principio del sistema trilítico y se logra utilizando sólo un tipo de material de piedra tanto para elementos verticales como para los horizontales.

The fortress located on the island of Giurgiu is one of the few constructions of medieval military architecture in Wallachia. The valorization of the site of the fortress encourages the cultural tourism in Romania and at the same time protects archaeological discoveries.
La fortaleza ubicada en la isla de Giurgiu es una de las pocas construcciones de la arquitectura militar medieval en Valaquia. La valorización del sitio de la fortaleza alienta el turismo cultural en Rumania y al mismo tiempo protege los descubrimientos arqueológicos.
The project proposes interventions that do not subordinate the monument and does not affect the possibility of new archaeological investigations.
El proyecto propone intervenciones que no subordinan el monumento y no afecta la posibilidad de nuevas investigaciones arqueológicas.
The first studies on the archaeological site were related to its delimitation: to the north it is bordered by a railway; to the east is the port road, and to the south and west, the site is flanked by the protective dam that separates the land from the fortress of the Channel of Plants. These elements have a rigid character and also obstruct the access to the site. Another aspect is that the fortress is at a lower level, about 4 meters below the port road level. From these observations, the basic idea of the project is to create a public access from the Alei Park to the archaeological site, through an underground passage below the port road. At the same time, from the functional point of view, there are exhibition spaces and routes to visit the ruins subordinated to the archaeological site and the landscape. In this direction, the park, the catalyst element, becomes the “door” of the city.
Los primeros estudios sobre el sitio arqueológico estuvieron relacionados con su delimitación: al norte está bordeado por un ferrocarril; al este se encuentra la carretera del puerto, y al sur y al oeste, el sitio está flanqueado por el dique protector que separa la tierra de la fortaleza del canal de las Plantas. Estos elementos tienen un carácter rígido y también obstruyen el acceso al sitio. Otro aspecto es que la fortaleza está a un nivel más bajo, a unos 4 metros con respeto a la carretera del puerto. A partir de estas observaciones, la idea básica del proyecto consiste en crear un acceso público desde el Parque Alei al sitio arqueológico, a través de un pasaje subterráneo por debajo de la carretera del puerto. Al mismo tiempo, desde el punto de vista funcional, existen espacios de exposición y rutas para visitar las ruinas subordinadas al sitio arqueológico y al paisaje. En esta dirección, el parque, el elemento catalizador, se convierte en la “puerta” de la ciudad.

04 CONVERSION OF MALAXA FACTORY, BUCHAREST, ROMANIA [2016] CONVERSIÓN DE LA FÁBRICA MALAXA, BUCAREST, RUMANIA [2016]
Masterplan: A key element in our project was to mediate the east traditional ‘low-rise, high-density’ environment with the taller communist-era buildings to the west. Our proposal of two open green spaces, separate administrative and cultural areas that function around the original hall and a main north-south carriageway surrounded by green space present key advantages for property investment. Keeping in mind the buildings heritage, the technological university works alongside research centres and start-up offices within the complex. Conversion of the Malaxa hall: The plan includes two containments with separate functions within the same building. Through a major investment which this project requires, we decided to create two “worlds”; namely one commercial and cultural world inside the original hall, and another world above it, including office and residencial spaces resulting in a long-term economically viable investment. On the ground level we proposed to maintain the building’s original façade, metallic structure and roof. The central zone contains shops and restaurants facing green open spaces in line with the open areas above. Skylights face through pathways, and the open piazza-style spaces in between, serve cultural functions: a museum, a gallery and a library. The horizontal mass constructed above the hall contains four floors, the height of which was determined through a study of perspective from eye level. This was in order to not distract from perception of the original hall. The transition from public space to private is vertically upwards; offices are on the first floor whilst duplex apartments cover the third and fourth floors. The second floor is an open level, featuring green space offering impressive views of the surrounding area, as well as of the halls interior; this made possible through the hall having uncovered parts directly in line with the green spaces at ground level.
El plan maestro: Un elemento clave en nuestro proyecto fue mediar en el entorno tradicional de “baja altura y alta densidad” del este con los edificios más altos de la era comunista al oeste. Nuestra propuesta de dos espacios verdes abiertos, áreas administrativas y culturales separadas que funcionen alrededor de la sala original y una calzada principal norte-sur rodeada de espacio verde presentan ventajas clave para la inversión inmobiliaria. Teniendo en cuenta el patrimonio de los edificios, la universidad tecnológica trabaja junto con los centros de investigación y las oficinas de puesta en marcha dentro del complejo. Conversión de la sala Malaxa: El plan incluye dos contenciones con funciones separadas dentro del mismo edificio. A través de una importante inversión que requiere este proyecto, decidimos crear dos “mundos”; un mundo comercial y cultural dentro de la sala original, y otro mundo por encima de él, incluiendo espacios de oficinas y residenciales, lo que resulta en una inversión a largo plazo económicamente viable. En la planta baja, propusimos mantener la fachada original, la estructura metálica y la cubierta del edificio. La zona central contiene tiendas y restaurantes frente a espacios verdes abiertos alineados con las áreas abiertas de arriba. Los espacios abiertos estilo piazza sirven para funciones culturales: un museo, una galería y una biblioteca. La masa horizontal construida sobre la sala contiene cuatro plantas, cuya altura se determinó a través de un estudio de la perspectiva desde el nivel de los ojos. Esto fue para no distraer la percepción de la sala original. La transición del espacio público al privado es verticalmente hacia arriba; las oficinas están en la primera planta, mientras que los apartamentos dúplex cubren las plantas tercera y cuarta. La segunda planta es un nivel abierto, con espacio verde que ofrece impresionantes vistas de los alrededores, así como del interior del pasillo; esto fue posible a través de la sala que tiene partes descubiertas directamente alineados con los espacios verdes en la planta baja.

Through our proposal, the front yard and the patio were taken into consideration as two areas which are clearly separated by a mass which assigns this spaces a ,,back” and ,,front” view of the site.
A través de nuestra propuesta, se tomaron en consideración el jardín delantero y el patio como dos áreas claramente separadas por una masa que asigna a este espacio una vista “hacia atrás” y “hacia adelante” del sitio.
In this case, they are disconnected by a horizontal mass laying on a base which resembles its context regarding height and texture.
En este caso, están desconectados por una masa horizontal que se apoya en una base que se asemeja a su contexto con respecto a la altura y la textura.
The bond between the building and the green space is evolving from a horizontal one to a vertical one. Hence, even though there is not a direct connection with Victoriei street, the terrace itself is recreated as a large space, a covered public square, considered an open space which can host different kinds of events. The garden, the horizontal element of the project, is rising above with 41 meters, therefore being detached from the public square. It becomes an introverted space due to the position and to the marginal wall plated with steel which reflects the vegetation and the sky, creating and infinite image, thereby seeming a much broader park, but isolated from the restlessness of the city. Only by walking by the marginal wall, you can find some voids where you can see the city. In a nutshell, the public square at the ground floor can host big events and can operate as an interest point, while the garden at the upper level includes an open-air restaurant which loses itself in the vegetation. The building’s function is mainly rental office spaces, except from the first and the second floor (split level) which host coffeeshops, bookshops, exhibitions with reference to the building’s past function.
El vínculo entre el edificio y el espacio verde está evolucionando de uno horizontal a uno vertical. Por lo tanto, a pesar de que no existe una conexión directa con la calle Victoriei, la terraza se recrea como un gran espacio, una plaza pública cubierta, considerada un espacio abierto que puede albergar diferentes tipos de eventos. El jardín, el elemento horizontal del proyecto, se eleva por encima con 41 metros, separandose de la plaza pública. Se convierte en un espacio introvertido debido a la posición y a la pared marginal de chapa de acero que refleja la vegetación y el cielo, creando una imagen infinita, aparentando así un parque mucho más amplio, pero aislado de la inquietud de la ciudad. Solo caminando por al lado de la pared marginal, se pueden encontrar vacíos donde se puede ver la ciudad. En pocas palabras, la plaza pública en la planta baja puede albergar grandes eventos y puede funcionar como un punto de interés, mientras que el jardín en el nivel superior incluye un restaurante al aire libre que se pierde en la vegetación. La función del edificio es principalmente espacios de oficinas de alquiler, excepto las del primer y el segundo piso (nivel dividido) que albergan coffeeshops, librerías, exposiciones con referencia a la función anterior del edificio.

The integration of the volume starts from the master plan found in Project 196, proposed during the “Bucharest 2000” contest.
La integración del volumen comienza desde el plan maestro que se encuentra en el Proyecto 196, propuesto durante el concurso “Bucarest 2000”.
The project aims to study new insertions in one of the unstructured areas that are observed between the buildings of the 1980s and the old urban tissue. The contrast between the buildings of the 1980s and the pre-existing tissue highlights the union of apparently irreconcilable hypostases.
El proyecto tiene como objetivo estudiar nuevas inserciones en una de las áreas no estructuradas que se observan entre los edificios la década de 1980 y el tejido viejo. El contraste entre los edificios de los años ´80 y el tejido preexistente resalta la unión de unas hipóstasis aparentemente irreconciliables.
The deconstructive sites that are behind these buildings are a good field of research for the “between” situation, for the contrast of scale, style and time. On this way, the project proposes the mediation between these two contrasting typologies: individual and collective low-rise housing and public institutions that dominate by size.
Los sitios deconstructivos que están detrás de estos edificios son un buen campo de investigación para la situación “entre”, para el contraste de escala, estilo y tiempo. En este sentido, el proyecto propone la mediación entre estas dos tipologías contrastantes: viviendas individuales y colectivas de baja altura e instituciones públicas que dominan por tamaño.
Therefore, the proposal consists of generating three volumes of big height connected through a building adapted to the scale of the adjacent housing tissue.
Por lo tanto, la propuesta consiste en generar tres volúmenes de gran altura conectados a través de un cuerpo adaptado a la escala del tejido de viviendas adyacente.

The project is located on the Technical University of Civil Engineering site, in a central area of Bucharest. The theme proposes the creation of a university campus with the main function of researching, but also includes other related functions.
El proyecto está ubicado en el sitio de la Universidad Técnica de Ingeniería Civil, en una zona central de Bucarest. El tema propone la creación de un campus universitario con la función principal de investigación, pero también incluye otras funciones relacionadas.
The 4 volumes are the result of a series of urban analysis of the context and the site, but also represent the four functions (faculty, research center, offices and co-working, residences and hotel) required for a sustainable and autonomous scenario with strong connections with the city.
Los 4 volúmenes son el resultado de una serie de análisis urbanísticos del contexto y del sitio, pero también representan las cuatro funciones (facultad, centro de investigación, oficinas y co-working, residencias y hotel) requeridas para un escenario sostenible y autónomo con fuertes conexiones con la ciudad.
Following the proposed master plan, I have detailed the volume corresponding to the faculty. The specific spaces for the faculty are organized around a central courtyard, this building working together with the other three volumes in order to generate the mechanism to which they belong.
Siguiendo el plan maestro propuesto, he detallado el volumen correspondiente a la facultad. Los espacios específicos para la facultad se organizan alrededor de un patio central, este cuerpo trabajando junto con los otros tres volúmenes para generar el mecanismo al que pertenecen.

The proposal for the educational center intents to be integrated into the existing context and reintegrated within the community. The location is chosen taking into account the proximity to the community and the avoidance of heavy traffic.
La propuesta para el centro educativo busca la integración el contexto existente y la reintegración dentro de la comunidad. La ubicación se elige teniendo en cuenta la proximidad a la comunidad y la evitación del tráfico intenso.
The concept focuses on the idea of continuity both through volume and through language, considering the observation of a constant alignment and a height regime that decreases in Haiducului Street.
El concepto se centra en la idea de continuidad tanto a través del volumen, como a través del lenguaje, considerando la observación de un alineamiento constante y un régimen de altura que disminuye en la calle Haiducului.
The unbuilt space is divided into three main areas: a reception patio, a service patio and another in strong relation with the area of housing and recreation. The reception patio has as its center of interest a pavilion of exhibitions, which mediates the relationship between the public and the private.
El espacio no construido se divide en tres áreas principales: un patio de recepción, uno de servicio y otro en fuerte relación con el área de la vivienda y recreación. El patio de recepción tiene como centro de interés un pabellón de exposiciones, que media la relación entre lo público y lo privado.
The separation of the project into some independent functional areas creates a less monotonous path, a route that remember the daily routine. The communication between interior and exterior spaces, the great accessibility to spaces for outdoor activities contribute to reducing the feeling of isolation.
La separación del conjunto en áreas funcionales independientes crea un camino menos monótono, una ruta que recuerda la rutina diaria. La comunicación entre espacios interiores y exteriores, la gran accesibilidad hacia los espacios destinados a actividades al aire libre contribuyen a reducir la sensación de aislamiento.
Through the low-rise housing area and the adjacent green space, a familiar space is created, which they acquire. The modular organization of housing provides a better supervision, a better interaction in more restricted groups.
A través de la zona de vivienda de baja altura y el espacio verde adyacente se crea un espacio familiar, que ellos adquieren. La organización de manera modular de la vivienda proporciona una mejor supervisión, una mejor interacción en grupos más restringidos.

The building is created by a dialogue with the garden, which is conceived as a “room” of the main building. It is discovered gradually, similar to discovering a poem, line by line. The visitors arrive in the building by passing through the garden – an urban sanctuary which mediates the space between the street as a public space, and the literary foundation, as a private space. Functionally, the building is designed in a strong relationship with the outer space, creating different perspectives to the central garden.
El edificio se genera a partir de un diálogo con el jardín, que se concibe como una “habitación” del edificio principal. Se descubre gradualmente, parecido al descubrimiento de un poema, línea por línea. Los visitantes llegan al edificio pasando por el jardín, un santuario urbano que media el espacio entre la calle como espacio público y la fundación literaria como espacio privado. Funcionalmente, el edificio está diseñado en una fuerte relación con el espacio exterior, creando diferentes perspectivas hacia el jardín central.
Moreover, it is built from a multitude of materials, like zinc, glass, wood, which amplify visitor’s experience while he is staying in the garden. The building is flooded with natural light through the curtain wall’s wide openings. Looking from inside out, every view angle highlights unique perspectives. Also, during the night, the literary foundation becomes a light spectacle.
Por otra parte, está construido a partir de una multitud de materiales, como zinc, vidrio, madera, que amplifican la experiencia del visitante durante su estancia en el jardín. El edificio está inundado de luz natural a través de las amplias aberturas del muro cortina. Mirando desde dentro hacia afuera, cada ángulo de visión resalta perspectivas únicas. Además, durante la noche, la fundación literaria se convierte en un espectáculo de luz.

The new Contemporary Art Museum is located on a site surrounded by some of Bucharest’s most representative buildings.
El nuevo Museo de Arte Contemporáneo está ubicado en un sitio rodeado por algunos de los edificios más representativos de Bucarest.
The museum consists of three volumes which host expositional spaces. The main volume, located at the intersection of Tudor Arghezi street and Batistei street, dominates the composition by its height. This is a result of the skylights which creates inside the building a dynamic light spectacle that modifies throughout the day depending on the sun position. The cascade structure of the floors grants the light permission to enter and cross the building, reaching the reception at the ground floor, and even going further, to the basement, slipping through the stairs. This part of the museum hosts sculptures and other tridimensional objects, as a result of better and more advantageous lighting.
El museo consta de tres volúmenes que albergan espacios expositivos. El volumen principal, ubicado en la intersección de las calles Tudor Arghezi y Batistei, domina la composición por su altura. Esto es el resultado de las claraboyas que crean dentro del edificio un espectáculo dinámico de luz que se modifica a lo largo del día dependiendo de la posición del sol. La estructura en cascada de los pisos permite a la luz entrar y cruzar el edificio, llegando hasta la recepción ubicada en la planta baja, e incluso más allá, al sótano, deslizándose a través de las escaleras. Esta parte del museo alberga esculturas y otros objetos tridimensionales, como resultado de una iluminación mejor y más ventajosa.
The other two volumes are perpendicular to the main one, and create a connection with the nearby Arcub. They are expositional spaces, but this time for two-dimensional art, as paintings, photography, and so on. Because of the demands regarding lighting in museums, the expositional spaces are illuminated by natural light only through the main interior court.
Los otros dos volúmenes son perpendiculares al principal, y crean una conexión con el Arcub de al lado. Son espacios expositivos, pero esta vez para arte bidimensional, como pinturas, fotografía, etc. Debido a las demandas con respecto a la iluminación en los museos, los espacios expositivos están iluminados con luz natural solo a través del patio interior principal.

The proposal of the project is situated at the intersection of two very different urban textures which have different heights (tall housing buildings on Giurgiului street and low individual housing on the other side).
La propuesta del proyecto se sitúa en la intersección de dos texturas urbanas muy diferentes que tienen diferentes alturas (edificios altos de viviendas en la calle Giurgiului y viviendas individuales bajas en el otro lado).
Tacking into consideration these facts, the proposal is four stories high, to merge with the existing texture and grows towards Giurgiului street to a 15 stories tower. This tower is the dominant of the group of buildings and, at the same time, a limit for the urban square formed between Toporasi and Giurgiului streets. The building is placed on this manner to form a continuous front to the street. The courtyard inside is only accessible to the dwellers of the proposal.
Teniendo en cuenta estos consideraciones, la propuesta tiene cuatro plantas de altura, para fusionarse con la textura existente y crece hacia la calle Giurgiului a través de una torre de 15 plantas de altura. Esta torre es la dominante del grupo de edificios y, al mismo tiempo, un hito para la plaza urbana formada entre las calles Toporasi y Giurgiului. El edificio se coloca de esta manera para formar un frente continuo a la calle. El patio interior es accesible sólo para los habitantes de la propuesta.

In plan, the shape of the houses and the green space relies on a simple geometry, determined by the site. The project´s shape is generated by drawing perpendicular lines on the site’s opposite sides. Due to this fact, results a multitude of individual lots, every single lot being split in two parts, one half containing the house, and the other one the private garden.
En planta, la forma de las casas y el espacio verde se generan a través de una geometría simple determinada por el sitio. La forma del proyecto se genera dibujando líneas perpendiculares en los lados opuestos del sitio. De esta manera, resulta una multitud de lotes individuales, cada lote dividiendose en dos partes, una mitad conteniendo la casa, y la otra el jardín privado.
The street facade is two storeys high, and wider than the opposite facade, which means that the street facade behaves as a visual and phonic barrier.
La fachada que da a la calle tiene dos plantas de altura y es más ancha que la fachada opuesta, lo que significa que la fachada de la calle se comporta como una barrera visual y fónica.
The house complex creates a connection between public and private space through a route that crosses the entire lot, resulting that the house is in the middle of two green spaces, between the park and the semi public garden.
El conjunto de la casa crea una conexión entre el espacio público y el privado a través de una ruta que cruza todo el lote, lo que resulta en que la casa está en el medio de dos espacios verdes, entre el parque y el jardín semi público.

Our intention was that of creating a monument that would not only serve a purpose of signal and a beacon of hope, but also an invitation to a journey to rediscover faith in a digital area. This way we came up with the idea for a maze of prayers that leads to the enlightened path toward God, the journey of each individual being the true test of faith. Each user experience is unique, and differs from other experiences because each person picks it’s own path, and each journey takes unexpected turns, but the ending is always the same: rediscovering God through His work that is reflected in the walls of prayers that line the path. The proposal centers around the idea of a city built upon faith, with each answered prayer manifested as a brick added to the wall that keeps the people inside it under the protection of God. At the end of their personal journey, after a moment of reflection, visitors can climb the tower, and upon reaching the top, they will notice the entire maze of walls, observing how the height decreases progressively as it gets closer to the center, to thetower, to accentuate the divine message.

Nuestra intención fue la de crear un monumento que no solo sirviera como señal y como un rayo de esperanza, sino que sea también una invitación a un viaje para redescubrir la fe en un área digital. De esta forma, se nos ocurrió la idea de un laberinto de oraciones que conduzca al camino iluminado hacia Dios, el viaje de cada individuo siendo la verdadera prueba de fe. La experiencia de cada usuario es única, y difiere de otras experiencias porque cada persona elige su propio camino, y cada viaje tiene giros inesperados, pero el final es siempre el mismo: redescubrir a Dios a través de su obra que se refleja en las paredes de oraciones que aparecen a lo largo del camino. La propuesta se centra entorno a la idea de una ciudad construida sobre la fe, con cada oración contestada, manifestada como un ladrillo añadido a la pared que mantiene a las personas dentro de ella bajo la protección de Dios. Al final de su viaje personal, después de un momento de reflexión, los visitantes pueden subir a la torre, y al llegar a la cima, notarán todo el laberinto de paredes, observando cómo la altura disminuye progresivamente a medida que se acerca al centro, a la torre, para acentuar el mensaje divino. La flexibilidad y el simbolismo del conjunto le permiten adaptarse al mundo siempre cambiante en el que vivimos, conservando a la vez el mensaje de la estructura y enviandolo a lo largo del tiempo.
