We have expanded into a year-round sports organization with baseball, basketball, dance, Frisbee, and soccer leagues.  I have hired an assistant executive director, and we are planning to expand into another Iowa location next year. - Dylan DeClerck The patent on my lipstick/liner case was published in March, and I ordered the first 2,500 cases. I plan to launch my proprietary line of long-wearing lipsticks and gloss early next year. My make-up service business continues to grow; I have added three independent contractors to meet the demand. Recently, I founded Lipstick with a Voice, a non-profit focused on providing scholarships and support to young women interested in business, entrepreneurship, or stem careers. - Kelsi Ziemann

Fab Lab Project Drake Innovation Week
Professors Snider and Swartwood initiated the first I-Week Challenge in their respective courses in April. Representatives from the Des Moines Register and Central Iowa Shelter Services, Iowa’s largest homeless shelter, submitted challenges for student teams to tackle. At the end of the week, student teams presented their recommendations to each organization.
We continue to explore ways to collaborate with faculty at Tecnológico de Monterrey in Guadalajara. Professor Swartwood returned to Tec in March 2017 to participate in their Global Faculty Workshop. Following that workshop, we hosted participating faculty from the University of Burgundy, Dijon, France during their visit to the United States.
Entrepreneurship faculty and InnovationPITCH Fellows have initiated WORKSHOP collaborations with Des Moines’s first maker-space, Area 515, a PARTICIPANTS non-profit community of makers, artists, and hobbyists. Area 515 members participated in the Innovation Inventory Project and are collaborating to gain a FabLab designation. We conducted a one-day, “Side-Gig” workshop in August for Area 515 members interested in starting a small business or commercializing their creative output. We plan to offer more workshops for makers in the future.

In April, Craig Newmark, founder of craigslist, Skyped into our Profiles in Entrepreneurship class. He shared his story about creating and building craigslist, answered questions and offered advice for young entrepreneurs. He closed by encouraging students to find a way to make an impact while focusing on achieving “enough.”

We also initiated a Monday Morning Mixer for students and local entrepreneurs. Over coffee and breakfast, students enjoyed sharing their ideas for new ventures and hearing about the experiences of Des Moines' entrepreneurs and innovators.

The Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders
Four Fellows Win Grants
In 2017, a total of $375,000 in seed grant funding was given to 35 Mandela Washington Fellows. We were thrilled that four of our own received grants! Recipients were:
In summer 2017, Drake University hosted for a second year the prestigious Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders, the flagship program of President Obama’s Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI). Twenty-five of Africa’s brightest emerging leaders from 18 African nations, between the ages of 25 and 35, spent six weeks during June and July learning from Drake faculty and engaging in the Greater Des Moines community. Entrepreneurship Centers' staff worked closely with Drake’s Pathways to Partnerships institute. Special thanks to Dr. Matthew Mitchell who led personal leadership plan development, and Tom S., Laura, and Tom M. for their countless hours facilitating business plan development.

In collaboration with Drake’s Insurance Center, the Entrepreneurship Center served as the first academic sponsor of The Global Insurance Accelerator (GIA). The GIA is a first-of-its-kind, Des Moines-based mentor-driven business accelerator designed to foster innovation in the insurance industry through startups targeting the global insurance industry. We provided financial support for two internship positions in addition to expert mentoring and consulting by Drake entrepreneurship, marketing, and insurance faculty. We have renewed our commitment for the upcoming cohort which will convene after the first of the year. 2017 was our fourth year of collaboration with the annual Immigrant Entrepreneurs Summit, hosted by Community CPA. Professor Kinnard, Käri Smith, and students interacted with Summit participants and organizers, Amanda Khoo, Dan Kim, and Ying Sa.
We renewed our sponsorship of 1 Million Cups Des Moines, organizers of an innovative networking event that features a new local entrepreneur each week. We advise and consult with many of the presenters, helping them with their business models, go to market strategies, and networking. Each of our Hatchery ventures presented at the end of summer and gained valuable feedback and suggestions. Members and organizers of 1 Million Cups also provide one-on-one mentoring to our students and regularly serve as judges on Hatchery and Pappajohn competition selection panels.
