FEATURED STORY

Presidential Sized Legacy Legacy – the long lasting impact of events that took place in someone’s life. President Karl Ertle is too humble to dwell on the incredible legacy he has left on Walsh Jesuit High School. However, in his 13 years of leading our institution, the advances achieved, and the lives he has touched as WJ’s 11th President are significant. Nearly $25M raised so prospective families knew an exemplary Walsh Jesuit education was affordable, the brand new 8,000 sf Mary and Edward Klein Fitness Center, improvements to the iconic Dome including the state-of-the-art Romanini Family Court, the creation of the Malley Center for Innovation and Design, revamping scholarship opportunities, facility improvements, and STEM-focused curriculum are just a few of the numerous advances to Walsh Jesuit. “I can’t believe it’s been 13 years and that I made it here each day,” said President Ertle. “I am most proud of the people with whom I minister. We have committed Jesuit educators and really good role models for the students who live out their vocations so well! I am also so proud of the work the Board and donors have done to make a quality Jesuit education affordable.” He also knew before his tenure began that upgrading the campus formed in 1964 was imperative. “Even in my interviews 14 years ago, there was talk about the need to upgrade WJ facilities, especially areas that affected student life directly. We strategically looked at what might have the biggest impact in making sure that our facilities allowed us to be the best school we could be.” It is because of these improvements, our alums, current students and technology advances that President Ertle gets so excited when promoting his beloved Walsh Jesuit to prospective students. “This is a special place of great kids with great families and a caring personality that permeates the campus. The Jesuit mission is truly life changing and that is so evident on Kairos retreats, in the classroom and beyond. The return on investment is manifest in the millions of dollars our seniors get annually, validating the academic programs,” he says proudly.

continue to grow the mission. To see Fr. Chris Fronk, SJ as a presider at Mass is a joy! When he and I first met in the fall of 2020, we were in the middle of Covid and had just lost our VP for Mission, Fr. Tom Doyle, SJ. In our very first discussion, he talked about his care for the students and his desire to teach at least part-time so he could come to know students, the heart of Jesuit education. I call him “Fr. Upgrade” and I know he will do just that for WJ.” President Ertle may see Fr. Fronk as a step up, but his leadership, passion, and commitment to WJ will be missed, and he will miss presiding over his Home on Wyoga Lake. “From the day I was offered the job, the Walsh Jesuit community has embraced my family. Our first WJ event was the farewell for Fr. Mike Marco, SJ and as we entered the Commons doors, the Mothers’ Club volunteers embraced us and it has been like that for 13 years! I will miss the beauty of the campus and the faces that fill it, both young and old. I will miss alums recalling Bill Ricco stories and the great teachers they had here.” So, what would President Ertle want his legacy to be? “That we worked together for the greater glory and helped students and adults value all that Walsh Jesuit is--AMDG! The people I have hired to serve here will be a great legacy and our alumni who light the world on fire make me so proud. I love it when alums come back home to teach and coach---that is proof in the pudding that this formula works.” Thank You President Ertle, your legacy will live on forever in the thousands of lives you have touched for more than a decade as our servant leader at Walsh Jesuit High School.

President Ertle leaves a wonderful foundation for incoming President, Father Chris Fronk, SJ to build upon. “It will be great to have a Jesuit at the helm who can

To me, Karl Ertle is the epitome of a man for and with others. He shows care and concern for students, faculty, administrators, parents, and anyone he meets. In my dealings in Athletics, I am constantly meeting ADs, coaches, and parents of opposing teams who say – “you work with Karl Ertle; what a great guy!” Karl truly never met a man he didn’t like.

– Barb Salata, Assistant Athletic Director

Karl has been a wonderful example to me of what it means to be an Ignatian Leader: To find God in all things, to presume the good in everyone, and to lead with love. He is the last to sit down and eat, and the first to lend a hand in cleaning up. WJ is a better school, and I strive to be a better person, because of Karl’s impact on all of us! – Jason Ruegg, VP, Enrollment Management

Karl made me a better principal and better athletic director. He supported me when I needed it and challenged me to look at things from different lenses. – Mark Hassman, Athletic Director

I first came to know Karl when we were both teaching at St. Ignatius High School forty years ago. Through all these years he has consistently been an inspiration and an example of what it means to be a ‘man for others.’ He is a man of faith and of service to others, putting Ignatian Spirituality into action. – Don Petkash, SJ

Karl has been so instrumental in the formation of not only our students, but the entire WJ community including parents, staff and faculty over the 13 years he’s been with us. Not only do I appreciate Karl’s leadership but also his friendship. Karl seems to instantly connect with anyone he meets because he is genuinely interested and compassionate. He sees good in every person and focuses on what makes that person be their best self.

– Christina Lauria, Alumni Parent, ’11 and ‘14

Karl Ertle is the beating heart of the WJ community - a leader who is engaged in as many WJ events as there are minutes in a day. To the Yates family, he has been a supportive and kind soul from the moment we met him at the WJ Open house in 2010, to this very day, long after our daughter graduated in 2014. Karl always takes time for us when we need him most, on both a personal and professional level! We are forever grateful and wish him well in this next chapter. Best to you Karl. – Lisa, Brad and Christina Yates ‘14

“Fall in Love. Stay in Love. And It Will Decide

EVERYTHING.”

Sophia Frammartino ’23 stood before her classmates, family, and friends seated in a packed house at EJ Thomas Hall at Akron University and said “Fall in love. Stay in love. And it will decide everything.” A very familiar phrase to all 256 graduates of the Walsh Jesuit Class of 2023. One of their classmates, Jack Hanchin, enthusiastically said those words at the end of each day’s morning announcements. It is a thoughtful daily examen prayer reflection and was the crux of the Jesuit values instilled in in the Class of 2023.

“We’ve fallen in love with curiosity. We fall in love with ideas that push us out of our comfort zone and help us become increasingly educated as we depart into new environments bound to challenge us. We’ve fallen in love with friendships. Above all else, we have fallen in

and Mr. Jeff Norris ‘96 led the graduates’ Fanfare and Processional into E.J. Thomas, and the Fifty-Fifth Annual Commencement was underway.

love with our faith.”

Sophia elaborated on why this simple phrase meant so much to our graduates. 7

It was the perfect message on a picture-perfect day as our graduates arrived under a 72-degree sunny bright blue sky at E.J. Thomas Performing Arts Hall beginning at 8:00 a.m. There were plenty of hugs, selfies and smiles as each student began to find their friends outside before the doors would open at 9:15. At precisely 10:00, Ms. Mary Kate Glowe WA R R IO R PATH S

Mr. Sean Lynch ‘94, Walsh Jesuit Principal, welcomed the Class of 2023; and the family, friends, staff, and faculty all in attendance to celebrate them. Fr. Ken Styles, SJ followed with a beautiful Invocation before President Ertle took the stage one final time to deliver his beautiful comments honoring our young men and women. Mr. Ertle also announced this

year’s Fr. John McGrail, SJ Award Recipients for 2023. Mr. Joseph Vecchio ’05, Mr. Adam Green ’03 and Mrs. Elisabeth Barker were recognized for their dedication to the Jesuit Mission.

Mr. Lynch then asked the Class of 2023 to please rise and move their cap tassels from the right side to the left side, signifying they are officially graduates, before they all sang the Alma Mater one final time as an entire class.

After Sophia delivered her beautiful speech as the Senior Speaker, it was time for the Conferring of Diplomas, presented by Dean of Students, and 1972 alum Mr. Gerry Rardin. The students were called to the stage by Mr. Lynch and Mrs. Megan Regan, Assistant Principal for Academics. President Ertle handed all 256 students their diplomas, assisted by Mr. Thomas Haag ’81, Board of Directors Chairman, and Mrs. Jane Rafferty, Assistant Principal for Formation.

After Anna Zografakis was called to the stage as the final graduate, a loud and proud standing ovation ensued as the Class of 2023 was now officially 256 of the 10,539 alumni who call Walsh Jesuit their home. Once seated, the newest alums watched the Senior Class Video produced by Mr. Andrew and Mrs. Christine Marquard, highlighting their four years at WJ, and what emoji they would select for their class, the selections were very amusing.

As they all recessed out of E.J Thomas to be greeted by their adoring family and friends, it was easy to see why the Class of 2023, stemming from the reality of pre- and post-pandemic formation, expressed and lived its gratitude for being together probably more than any other class in school history. At the end of her speech Sophia challenged her classmates to “stay in love”, set the world on fire, and live out the theme for the 2022-23 school year, “To Praise, Reverence, and Serve God.” We have no doubts that a class that earned over $38M to 72 different colleges and universities in 20 states and the UK will do just that! Just know that no matter how far and wide your journeys may take you, Warrior Nation is always eager to welcome you back home.

30 years ago this August, we celebrate the first girls to grace our campus in the then almost 30-year history of the school. That first day was a bit of a circus, as photographers, cameras, and reporters from all the local media outlets were on hand to document the historic day. It had some bumps in the road initially, however; the WJ community became a much better institution very rapidly, and it continues to evolve and grow to this day. We caught up with a few of those students to gather their thoughts on what it was like being part of that momentous occasion. Angela (Zingale) Rodenhauser ’96 knew immediately she was going to be a Warrior. “After my first meeting with Mr. Ricco, I knew WJ was a special place and I wanted to be there.” For Bridget (Grady) Rottinghaus ’96, it was the same feeling. “My older brother Paul ’91 had gone to Walsh Jesuit and there was a feeling every time I went to one of his football games or events that this was something I wanted to be a part of.” Gina (DiDonato) Kubec ’96 doesn’t remember that first day but is very fond of the reception she received. “For all of the media coverage in the

months preceding our admission, I was ready for a less than ideal reception to girls coming to WJ. But honestly? Everyone was extremely welcoming!” However, for Missy (Mittiga) Namay ’96, the first day stands out vividly in her mind. “I was nervous and excited to be a part of something new,” she said. “I never felt uncomfortable or out of place. Right from the beginning it was easy to make friends.” Ironically, as you see from the photos, these four members of that great 1996 class are still very close friends to this day! “I made lifelong friendships during my time at WJ and am so blessed to have had that opportunity,” said Rodenhauser.

“When I entered surgical residency 20 years ago it was a very male dominant field,” said Melissa (Hulvat) Kaptanian ’95. “I truly believe that my experience thriving as one of only a few women at Walsh Jesuit gave me the confidence to take on a traditionally male dominated profession.” Jillian (Joseph) Pelland ’97 added,

For our first female alums, it is a source of pride to have been such a significant part of the legacy of WJ. “Not only am I proud that I was able to attend WJ, but the fact I was able to enter as a freshman and attend for all four years makes it even better. Now I’m the proud mother of the first legacy of a female alum and the first legacy of two alums!” (her husband Dave is a graduate of 1996) Now after three decades, it seems hard to imagine Walsh Jesuit as anything other than a home for both men and women. Would these “pioneers” do it all over again? Everyone said, “100 Percent!” “It’s always a fun family dinner when we can sit and share Doc Worthington stories,” said Pelland. “I am so proud of the strong females that have filled the halls since the fall of ’93,” said Kubec. Angela Rodenhauser '96 with her daughter Gianna '26.

“We have made the classroom, the school, and the community better in many ways.” Rodenhauser added, “While I don’t think I fully appreciated it in the moment, my Jesuit education and the teachings of Ignatian spirituality and cura personalis truly has had a lasting impact on my life.” It didn’t take long, but as the Akron Beacon Journal pointed out 30 years ago;

“In the end, Walsh became unified. When the girls played volleyball, the boys cheered, pounded on a table, and did the wave. The players on the court weren’t girls, they were Warriors.” We are happy to report that the Akron Beacon Journal was right then and now. “Admitting females to an all-male school was certainly a difficult decision that was undertaken prayerfully by the leadership at that time,” said Kaptanian. “30 years later, I hope that this is universally recognized as the right decision. Over three decades I have watched the Walsh Jesuit student body become even more diverse. It is these differences united under the same common goal of the academic formation of men and women for others that we will make Walsh Jesuit strong, vital, and relevant for the next 30 years.” 13

We Are Warriors On April 21, 2023, a new era of the Walsh Warrior was introduced to the public with the video premier of “What It Means to be a Warrior.” Current students, staff members, and alums from all over read about being defenders of peace and justice, who serve our communities with love and cultural humility before revealing the new look Warrior. The new imagery has been very well received as students are already wearing it around the region, and designing future Warrior athletics uniforms. The process took several years and included a contest for artwork from members of our community. Our marketing committee explored the many options over several years before determining this new Warrior icon. The recent icon, along with other contenders, were vetted with hundreds of our current students, alumni, and other community members.

DANCE SCHOOL NEWS

the Nights Away If you have ever attended a Warrior athletic event or the Warrior Gala, the always smiling face that you will see is BreeOnna Springer. Bree not only does an incredible job with Walsh Jesuit events as the school’s Special Events Manager, but she is also the Warriors Dance Team Coach who started the squad from scratch. “I’m not going to lie, I was nervous about starting the team because I didn’t know if there would be interest or what their abilities would be, but they have met me where I am at and truly make me a better person. I love coaching this team,” said Springer. “We have 18 dancers in our second season! The interest is so encouraging, and the talent inspires me. These dancers are amazing people.” Now what you may not know about Coach Bree, she is a member of the Cavs PowerHouse Dance Team since its inception in 2019! On game nights you’ll see her with her teammates up in the concourse greeting fans as they arrive, and performing throughout the game, both on the court and throughout Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse. audition, and the process of making the team is long and grueling, challenging the dancer’s body and mind, but is well worth the time and effort. “To be able to dance professionally in front of an arena and on national television on any given night still gives me chills,” said Springer. “The feeling I get anytime I walk out is indescribable and a dream come true.” 15

so many life skills that I will forever be grateful for! As a little kid, I used to make my family sit in the living room so I could put a performance on for them.” “Bree has been a positive light on the team for years,” says Cavs PowerHouse Dance Team Coach Katie Gibbons.

“She is very

talented and a great performer, but off the court she is just as exceptional. Working on a team with a bunch of different personalities is challenging. Bree is always there to provide a helping hand, be there for a teammate, and positively impact those around her. Her professionalism and attitude are things I truly appreciate!” In Coach Bree’s mind, her involvement with the Cavs PowerHouse Dance Team has made her a better coach for the Warriors’ Dance Team. “I model the WJ Dance Team from the Cavs. The difference is I have a practice team and a performance team. I want there to be opportunity for the dancers on the practice

“To be a successful coach, your heart must be in the right place. You must genuinely want to help people and build up your team. This is where Bree excels. Not only does she have the dance and performance experience, but the people skills and heart to successfully do the job.” For Coach Bree, this is just the beginning of even greater things to come for her WJ Dance Team with the ultimate goal of becoming a competition team in the future. Who knows, maybe some of our Warriors will have the same opportunities the Cavs have provided their coach. “I was able to dance with LL Cool J at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction and with DJ Khalid, Lil Baby, Migos, Lil Wayne, Ludacris, and Mary J Blige during All Star weekend. I am beyond thankful for all the blessings in my life, but I truly wouldn’t be able to do any of this without my wonderful support system and family who has been behind me since day one.”

Meet Mr. Burnside & the Brand-New

WJ Center for Design & Innovation This year, Walsh Jesuit launched a state-ofthe-art new STEM lab for our students, the ‘Malley's Center for Design and Innovation’.

Mr. Burnside, can you share with us the motivation and inspiration behind creating this space? Where did this idea come from? The concept of a STEM center was first born out of the school’s strategic plan.

To help us celebrate the launch of this new lab space, we asked Mr. David Burnside, who was the driving force behind the design and creation of this lab, to tell us a little bit about this new facility and why it is such a key component in the growing Computer Science curriculum at Walsh Jesuit!

Since I also served on the

committee that took on a similar effort at Bedford High School, Sean Lynch '94, our Principal, approached me in the fall of 2020 with the request of heading up the effort to create this space here at WJ. To begin the initiative, we reached out for advice from our partner Jesuit high schools around the country, many of whom already had effective spaces in place. The goal was to create the curriculum first and let that be the guiding force for how the lab would be built. After much discussion about what we wanted from a curricular standpoint, we then put together a team of teachers to go out and visit “makerspaces” for ideas. Our current space pulls those components from what we all liked from each of those spaces. With that idea in place, we started our search for a suitable location in the building.

ATHLETIC S

A Family Affair For many years, throughout each Warrior athletic season, Fall, Winter and Spring, you’ll find a Bowers family member on the sidelines. It all began in the late 90’s when John Bowers was the Freshman baseball coach at WJ, followed by his wife Joyce, who joined the Warriors program as the Volleyball coach, and then was asked to coach Freshman basketball. The timing was perfect as the Bowers’ daughter, Kelli, was now a Freshman on our campus. Kelli ‘02 was a good athlete herself, wearing the Maroon and Gold for both the basketball and softball programs, helping the Warriors win a softball state title in 2002. She was followed by Joe ‘08, a 3-sport athlete in football, basketball, and baseball, who also won a state championship in his senior campaign for the baseball Warriors. Both Bowers children were very accomplished athletes, but their ties to the Warriors wouldn’t end upon graduation. It turns out Joyce was instrumental in bringing Kelli back to her alma mater. “When I graduated from Walsh University, I coached Freshman basketball with my mom, and the JV softball team,” said Kelli. For Joe, it was a former coach who knew Joe had the gifts to be a great leader, “I was in my last semester studying Physical Education at Mount Union, and Coach John Norris '96 gave me a call and asked if I was interested in coaching the freshman basketball team,” said Joe. “So I can’t thank Coach Norris enough for opening doors for me that basically shaped where I am at now.” Joe would also coach football for multiple years and be brought on as pitching coach by legendary baseball coach Chris Kaczmar '88. He now inherits a program many consider to be the best in all of Ohio. “I am following two coaching legends. Coach Kaczmar and Coach Steve Grescovich '74 are both Hall of Fame coaches, who have built an unbelievable program here at WJ, and I’m thankful that I get a chance to steward the WJ baseball tradition for them.”

21

WA R R IO R PATH S

Currently, Joyce is the head coach for the Freshman Volleyball team, Kelli leads the JV Warriors basketball squad, while Joe is the head man for baseball and JV basketball. The three of them all coaching at a school they love means a lot to the Bowers family. “I think it is awesome for all of us to coach,” said Joyce. “We all share a passion for sports. You don't coach high school sports for the money. It is for the passion and love for the game and be able to teach and share that love with the kids.”

Kelli echoes the same sentiments, “I feel privileged to be a small part of what my mom and Joe have created at Walsh Jesuit. Not only are they wellrespected coaches but good, quality people who love what they do and give so much of their time and dedication to making kids better athletes.” When the family gets together, you can imagine what the topic is. “Some families talk about how your day at work was, or politics, the Bowers family usually is questioning one another on why you’re running a zone defense, or why did you take that pitcher out of the game,” said Joe. All three have fond memories of their time coaching at WJ, whether it be winning a state title, a performance that stands out, or just being around the kids. “I absolutely love the conversations the players have with us,” said Joe. “In a 5-minute span, the Walsh Jesuit Baseball team will go from talking about Shakespeare to arguing if Lil Baby is a top 5 rapper, and those are really the most memorable moments, because you actually get to know more about the person, and not just the player.” Just like those conversations, we now know more about a family and their unwavering commitment to the Warriors athletic programs for over a quarter century.
