SPRING 2019

Fellow Bulldogs, The 110th Drake Relays will soon be upon us. Whether you have attended Relays every year, or merely smile at the memories from your student days, we hope you will return to campus this spring. It’s a great time to celebrate with friends, share stories, and reconnect with the University. Painting the section of Carpenter Avenue between Cowles Library and Jewett Hall has become a cherished Relays tradition. Those colorful squares reflect the diversity of our student organizations and the vibrancy of our student life. This unifying experience spans generations, leaving a legacy of memories for each incoming class of students to experience. The street-painting tradition will take on special significance this year as the campus continues striving toward a greater sense of equity and inclusion. To learn more about steps the University is taking, visit www.drake.edu/diversity. Of course, street painting is only one Relays tradition. There are many more. Within this issue there are details on a host of events taking place on campus from April 20–27. Visiting alumni can reconnect with classmates from their college or school, take part in annual fraternity and sorority chapter alumni activities, and watch world class athletes compete on the famed Blue Oval. We hope to see you there! If you are unable to travel to Des Moines, you can find the fun online. Follow Drake Alumni’s Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter accounts (@DrakeAlumni) so you don’t miss a moment.
I look forward to seeing you at the All-Alumni Tent Party! Sincerely,
Andy Verlengia, JO’02 Director of Alumni Relations P.S. We always love to hear from you. Send questions and thoughts about the Alumni Insider to insider@drake.edu.

SCHOOL OF EDUCATION Collier-Scripps Hall has become the go-to place for classes, seminars, and special events. The schedule is full a year in advance! In addition, there have been several exciting developments in SOE programs. Drake Head Start received federal funding to move four classrooms from part-time to full-time. Over 975 children and families benefit from this program. Drake’s Continuing Education & Professional Development is adding an online course in suicide prevention. We’ve seen growth throughout the school this year. The Ed.D. and Doctoral Program enrollment has topped 140.
Thanks to an anonymous donor, Aliber Hall’s entrance has an updated look, and students have a new collaborative study space. Additionally, digital signage and a stock ticker now welcomes all visitors. The MBA, MPA, and new Master of Data Analytics Leadership (MDAL) degree programs are now fully available online. Interested parties can contact Dianna Gray at: dianna.gray@drake.edu Our BizTalk@Drake Distinguished Lecture Series featured Mike Draper, founder of RAYGUN; Heather Bruce, BN’12, AS’12, Chief Executive Officer, and Doug Bruce, BN‘72, GR‘89, retired owner of Osmundson Manufacturing Company; Tiffany Tauscheck, JO’01, Chief Strategy Officer of the Greater Des Moines Partnership, and Tanner Krause, President of Kum & Go.
Over 100 faculty and staff studied in international special courses in January, May, and June in Morocco, Spain, Portugal, Ghana, Kosovo, Hawaii, and Ontario. The South Central STEM project provides ten nationallytested programs to over 150 area schools with $500,000 in annual state funding. Finally, we are thrilled with a recent $1 million gift from the late Dorothy Dawson, ED’64, GR’65, allotted to scholarships for sophomores, juniors, or seniors pursuing teaching certificates. Please know that all gifts matter. Special thanks to the 85 people who made donations in December.

COLLEGE OF ARTS & SCIENCES Eight months ago, I started my tenure as the dean of the College of Arts & Sciences. I am thrilled that it has been a successful year for A&S. We started the academic year with a record-breaking first-year class: 420 students across 40 majors. Our new Kinesiology major is thriving, Data Analytics continues to grow exponentially, and Music had one of its largest first-year classes ever. Our faculty have been conducting research, presenting papers, publishing books, and creating music and art. We just received word
that one of our Environmental Science & Sustainability faculty members received a $200,000+ research grant from Polk County! We’ve made curriculum changes to address the evolving needs of our students, prepare them with the skills to succeed in an increasingly global world, and to meet the expectations of employers. A whopping 96.7% of our students held internships and our accomplishment rate is a phenomenal 98.5%. Next fall, we will have a new major in Spanish and our first graduate program with the MS in Applied Behavior Analysis. We are hatching big ideas that will continue to strengthen the College as the foundation for meaningful lives and successful careers. I am humbled and thrilled to be part of the Drake family.

SCHOOL OF JOURNALISM & MASS COMMUNICATION At SJMC, we are celebrating 100 years of journalism education, embracing our legacy of “Empowering Voices Since 1919.” Join the party this April — a special SJMC history exhibit will be open in Cowles Library and we’ll also hold our SJMC Alumni Reception on April 27. Stop by and come see the remodeled electronic media facilities. These upgrades are thanks to the generosity of Al McCoy,
FA’54, longtime voice of the Phoenix Suns, and the late James Feaster, JO’58. If you can’t make it back for Relays, keep an eye out for regional alumni events in fall 2019 and spring 2020. In addition, we’ll hold interactive campus events to inspire brainstorming on the future of journalism and mass communication throughout the year. Stay tuned to the SJMC website at www.drake.edu/sjmc and our Facebook page for details on these and other events. Our centennial is an opportunity to embrace our rich history and wonderful people, including YOU, our alumni and supporters!
We’re excited to announce the new “SJMC Stories.” Alumni will discuss how their SJMC education prepared them for meaningful, exciting, and unexpected careers. If you would like to nominate yourself or a fellow alum, please email me at: kathleen.richardson@drake.edu. 3

COLLEGE OF PHARMACY & HEALTH SCIENCES The College of Pharmacy & Health Sciences continues to thrive as more programs gain accreditation, more students earn accolades, and we increase in standings compared to our peer institutions.
And Lauren Blum, P4, received the College’s inaugural Granberg Student Excellence Award.
The Occupational Therapy Doctorate (OTD) program received full accreditation from the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE) for seven years—the maximum for initial accreditation.
The PharmD Class of 2018 was second in the nation in the American Society of Health Systems Pharmacy (ASHP) PharmD Residency Phase I Match. The 2017 PharmD Class exceeded national average board pass rates by ten percent which was tenth in the nation.
Lauren Blum, P4, and Kaitlin Crane, O3, partnered with two Des Moines University medical students and won the CLARION National Case Competition. Matt Glasow, P4, won the Next-Generation Future Pharmacist, sponsored by Parata and Pharmacy Times. Kelli Jo Welter, P3, was elected national president-elect of the American Pharmacists Association-Academy of Student Pharmacists (APhA-ASP).
Jerry Anderson LAW SCHOOL
The American Bar Association introduced its first national competitions championship and Drake Law School ranked third out of 156 law schools. We are also one of only three schools to receive an A+ for family law by PreLaw Magazine. PreLaw noted that the Joan and Lyle Middleton Center for Children’s Rights helps our program stand out. Our faculty has been rightfully recognized as well. The American Law Institute elected Professor Anthony Gaughan to membership.
As a result of the work of our faculty, staff, preceptors, alumni, and students, CPHS continues to be recognized nationally. To all of our alumni who assist us in these endeavors, thank you!
He joins Drake Law professors Allan Vestal, David McCord, and the Honorable Mark Bennett in this distinction. There are fewer than 3,000 members nationwide. With your support, we’ve been able to kickstart initiatives such as our Rural Access to Justice Initiative, which started in September with two placements. The initiative offers recent graduates a pathway to solo or small firm practice in rural Iowa, in turn, addressing the need for legal services in those communities. In addition, the Institute for Justice Reform and Innovation launched this fall, led by the Honorable Mark Bennett. The Institute is dedicated to improving the fairness and efficiency of the justice system. I look forward to what other great things we can achieve together as the Drake Law School community this year.

ALUMNI PROFILE: LEGACY FAMILY Raising strong-willed and independent daughters, Jill and John Farmer knew their girls would want to chart their own course when it came to choosing a college, though they certainly thought Drake should be on the list.

After all, Drake University is where Jill and John’s story together began. Jill (Lingwall) Farmer, JO’91, first noticed John, AS’92, as the emcee for Bulldog Tales, an annual campus variety show. However, it wasn’t until the next fall when they worked together in the Admissions office that they decided to go on their first date. Twenty-six years of marriage later, and the rest is history. But their Drake story didn’t end when they graduated. As a member of the National Alumni Board, John stays connected with alums across the country. Both John and Jill help Drake graduates network with successful St. Louis alumni. Given their ongoing involvement, Drake was an obvious choice for their daughters, but they didn’t push it. “Our oldest, Peyton, made it very clear she wanted to go her own way,” notes Jill. But then something happened during the college search process. “We were in Des Moines visiting family and she begrudgingly let us show her campus. Turns out, she really liked it and that began to turn the tide.” Next it was time for their daughter, Jane, to make her decision. “After Peyton enrolled, I think that only strengthened her younger sister’s resolve to go some place even farther away,” jokes John.
In the end, Jane was likewise drawn in by the people and opportunities at Drake. Both have continued the Farmer family Drake story. Peyton will graduate this spring after spending a semester in Barcelona and a J-Term in Africa. Jane, a first-year, also looks forward to blending global learning into her Drake experience. “Although we never pushed it, I must admit it’s been pretty exciting having our girls at Drake,” says John. “We get to share our old traditions and watch from a distance as they make their own Drake memories. It’s been more fun than I ever imagined.”

LEGENDS
WEEKEND It was a year Drake will never forget. The 1969 Drake men’s basketball team shot past its competitors to make it into the NCAA Final Four game against UCLA. The team included Dolph Pulliam, FA’69; Willie Wise, ED’69; Willie McCarter, ED’69; and Rick Wanamaker, JO’70, among other all-stars. Coached by Maury John in his 11th year, the Bulldogs were one of the greatest comeback teams in college basketball history. While the team finished last in the 1967 Missouri Valley Conference, they returned only two years later to place third in the national rankings. In February 2009, Drake officially retired the jerseys of Pulliam, Wise, and McCarter. In honor of the 50th anniversary, the Drake men’s basketball team sported retro jerseys during the Feb. 9, 2019, game. Get your commemorative legends shirt at the bookstore (in store and on their website, bkstr.com/ drakeuniversitystore). Stay up-to-date
