Calling her shot The COVID-19 pandemic swept the world in Isabelle Tharp’s third year of the pharmacy program at the Drake College of Pharmacy & Health Sciences. Tharp, who calls herself a planner by nature, discovered what planning is like in a crisis. She helped Drake faculty organize vaccination clinics without knowing how many doses of the vaccines they were receiving or when they would be arriving. For the first clinic, in January, Tharp volunteered to package and sort vaccines so they could be administered quickly and correctly. She used her position as president of the Drake chapter of the American Pharmacists Association Academy of Student Pharmacies to help organize student volunteers. With the additional hands, Tharp and the Drake College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences were able to vaccinate hundreds of teachers and other frontline workers in central Iowa. “The opportunity we had to take action was unbelievable,” Tharp said. “Science created something to help our community, and people came together and got everything done so quickly.” Tharp said the emotional reactions from the patients were unlike anything she’s ever seen in her previous experience administering routine influenza and tetanus vaccines. “One patient was talking to me with tears in their eyes,” Tharp said. “It was a really cool thing to have the opportunity to do.”
“
I knew this was something that was going to positively impact society. That’s something that I wanted to be a part of.
”
— Isabelle Tharp, Class of 2022

UNAPOLOGETICALLY ACADEMIC Drake offers everything you’d expect to find at a university— sports and the associated swag, student organizations and other extra-curriculars, social opportunities, food and fun around campus and Des Moines, and more. But from your first day on campus, you’ll understand Drake’s priority: academics and other educational opportunities that help you grow professionally and personally. Everything else comes second.
Sydnei Washington, elementary education major/sociology minor; Frankfort, Ill.; Class of 2022 “I strive to make a positive impact on the communities that have helped me. I do this by giving back through several organizations on campus. Drake University has provided me with tools and opportunities to make my goal a reality.”
Kaili Miller, magazine media/graphic design; Kansas City, Mo.; Class of 2022
MIX & MATCH MAJORS Chemistry and fine art? Pre-law and music?
“At Drake, I’ve been able to find my place through being an assistant editor for Drake Magazine and member of the Gamma Omicron chapter of Alpha Phi. Both of these organizations push me to pursue my passions for journalism and sisterhood because I’m surrounded by people who inspire me to dream big.”
Astronomy and public relations? Why not? We take “nobody’s ever done that before” as a challenge. Drake students blaze their own educational trails to earn degrees that will last a lifetime. You’ll start work in your major from day one, and interdisciplinary classes and skilled advising make it all very doable in four years.
Alex Maciejewski, PharmD student Schaumburg, Ill.; Class of 2022 “Through networking and many other invaluable experiences, I was hired as a pharmacy intern at a local community pharmacy. I’ve been able to learn so much—not just by training, but through patient consulting and immersing myself into the field of pharmacy. I recently completed a job shadow at the Mercy Medical Center oncology department, which captivated my interest in clinical and hospital pharmacy.”

Research isn’t just for grad students. (Thank goodness.) Klaus Bartschat, award-winning physicist and Drake professor, is a prolific researcher who has spoken at dozens of international conferences.
Take a closer look. Test the norm. Go on a binge of saying “what if” to everything from algorithms to anthropology. You’ll learn from brilliant professors with advanced degrees, not teaching assistants, and have opportunities to do real research, even as a first-year student. You’ll also get hands-on experience with the latest scientific technologies and facilities through our STEM@DRAKE complex. If you’re into science, ask to meet with a professor in your interest area and get a tour of our facilities and equipment.

Let loose ! Even though Drake is unapologetically academic, that doesn’t mean you won’t have fun. All books with no breaks makes even the most cheerful Bulldog moody. The total college experience includes the special events, famous visitors, blue face paint, Bulldog fan moments, socials, concerts, clubs, and bizarre world record attempts Drake is known for. Relax in a lazy hammock on Helmick Commons, grab late-night snacks in your pajamas, spend all night debating your favorite theory/cause/fandom, and so much more. Ask your campus student guide for the real beyond-the-books story. You’ll quickly understand that Bulldogs know how to have fun.

LIKES: Snuggling, snacks, giving hugs, chew toys, tussling with Griff I (also known as Original Griff or OG), and following his family everywhere. DISLIKES: He literally loves everything.
MEET THE CAMPUS ROCK STAR His name is Griff II and he’s Drake’s live bulldog mascot. You will spot him at campus visit days, at sporting events, in the campus Starbucks, at celebrations, making the rounds in the community, taking walks across campus, and during study breaks. He’s a certified therapy dog who has found his life’s calling being the walking, wiggling embodiment of smart, dedicated, fun-loving, enthusiastic, big-hearted, loyal Drake Bulldogs everywhere. YOU MAY SEE GRIFF DURING YOUR VISIT Griff II is a busy guy, but he loves meeting future Bulldogs. If you see him, snap a selfie and give him some scratches behind the ears. You know you want to. Griff II loves it and he’ll love you. Sign up for an opportunity to meet him at drake.edu/visit.
Griff I spent nearly a year training Griff II on the duties of a live mascot before passing on the harness to his successor in July 2020.

FAVORITE FOODS: Griffuccinos from the Olmsted Starbucks, cheese, and bananas. CAUSES: Griff Gives Back, his annual pet food drive to benefit The Pet Project Midwest, a local pet food pantry that helps pets in need. This effort was started by his predecessor, Griff I, and has resulted in the donation of 35 tons of food over the course of its six years for area pets. Griff II proudly carries the torch and nearly doubled the previous record in his first year in charge. LOOKING FORWARD TO: Continuing to carve his own path as the official live mascot for Drake while continuing and building on the legacy of the OG. @DrakeUGriff
An annual street painting party—where you’ll probably wear almost as much paint as the street—is just one of many traditions and celebrations surrounding the world-famous Drake Relays in late April. We could go on, but you get the idea.

Over half a million people in the center of it all Greater Des Moines is a thriving, eclectic, diverse city that’s equally proud of its agrarian roots and its cosmopolitan flair. Drake is in the center of Des Moines, which is a center for businesses ranging from agriculture to healthcare. Plus, every four years the presidential candidates come to town. It’s an amazing place to experience great food, great music, and great times, and is full of businesses hungry for new professional talent. Most people who visit greater Des Moines for the first time react with some version of “Wow, I had no idea.” Come experience your own wow moment. Who knows, you may be visiting your new home.

Going to college in Des Moines means traveling city blocks, not highway miles, to hear from (and meet with!) national and international luminaries. You’ll also be at ground zero for the first-in-the-nation presidential caucuses—and televised presidential debates, candidate visits, and swarming press—which means a ringside seat to the action and the internship of a lifetime. guests—including television style-maker Tim Gunn, renowned scientist/TV personality Bill Nye, and superstar athlete and World Cup winner Megan Rapinoe— who often spend the day with students. All of that, plus the many personal, social, musical, entertaining, and professional experiences metro Des Moines offers, puts you in the center of it all.
There’s nothing to do in Des Moines … said nobody who has spent any time here. On January 14, 2020, the political universe descended once again on Drake University as the 7th Democratic presidential debate was broadcast nationally from Drake’s campus.

THE DAILY HUSTLE
Political events during the last caucus season hired over 75 Drake students as interns.
What is a typical student day like? Here’s a brief look at the schedule of Drake student Kyle Tekautz. Kyle Tekautz, public relations and strategic political communications; Fargo, N.D.; Class of 2022 BEST THINGS ABOUT DRAKE: The community, opportunities for professional and personal growth, the traditions, and of course Griff! 7:15 a.m. Wake up in a panic and realize I forgot to set an alarm. Luckily, I still wake up in time for my class. I get ready, throw on some Griff socks, and head out the door. 8 a.m. Start off my day with one of my favorite professors, Jennifer Konfrst! We have a class discussion analyzing public relations cases and discuss ethical practices in the profession. 10:15 a.m. Class got out early, so I go to my favorite spot on Drake’s campus, the Olmsted Starbucks. 11 a.m. Head back to Meredith Hall for my digital media strategies class, where we are learning about all the trends occurring in social and digital marketing. Today we are discussing the rise of TikTok. 12:15 p.m. Lunchtime at Hubbell! It’s ravioli day, one of my favorite days of the week. 1 p.m. I head to Cowles Library to study
and catch up on emails—definitely a perk of a spaced out schedule. 2 p.m. Time for Advertising principles— we talk about our final project for the semester, which is creating our very own advertising campaign for a brand. 4 p.m. Head to Olmsted and attend my weekly session of the Donald V. Adams Leadership Institute, where I am able to learn more about myself and how to be a better leader. 6 p.m. Dinner time with friends at Hubbell. I really enjoy being able to sit down and catch up with friends and make plans for the upcoming weekend. 7 p.m. The Student Alumni Association is my favorite organization on Drake’s campus. Tonight’s meeting is full of brainstorming how we can promote student engagement. 9 p.m. I head on over to FAC (Fine Arts Center) for rehearsal for my co-ed acapella group, Fermata the Blue. Being a busy student, I enjoy being able to unwind by singing and creating music with others. 11 p.m. I finally get back home to GK (Goodwin-Kirk Residence Hall), and hang out in the lobby with friends and work on homework. With a few too many social media breaks, I finally accomplish everything and head up to my room for bed. It was a terr-GRIFF-ic day to be a Bulldog! 23

When “Learn by doing” is a thing here. Professors are eager to help connect you to opportunities around the nation and world. The Iowa Capitol and Downtown Des Moines are just a few minutes away, so you don’t need to wait for summer to have an amazing internship.
“Drake is the best place to be if you’re looking for political opportunities. Every four years, the eyes of the world are on Iowa and Des Moines. I loved getting to work for a presidential campaign leading up to caucus—it was hands-down the most rewarding experience of my life. In addition to the opportunities the caucuses bring, the capitol is just down the road and holds a lot of internship opportunities; I was able to intern there my sophomore year. And between it all, the professors at Drake are incredibly plugged into opportunities, so there is always someone who can help steer you in the direction you want to go.” — Emilyn Crabbe, strategic political communications and anthropology sociology; St. Louis, Mo.; Class of 2021, Pete Buttigieg Campaign, Drake Campus Coordinator

The world is your classroom
Drake’s January Term gets you out of the classroom—and maybe out of the state, country, or hemisphere. It’s really up to you. J-Term allows you to dive into subjects like letterpress or robot programming or do some traveling while learning in places like Washington, D.C., Europe, Chile, the Galapagos Islands, and the Bahamas. No extra tuition needed. If a month just isn’t enough, you can take your exploration to the next level—a study abroad experience. Drake offers a broad range of locations (more than 70 countries), lengths of stay, language involvement, and areas of study.
“Studying abroad gave me a whole new perspective on life. Regarding my major, it gave me more of a sense of connecting with people as people, rather than clients, when I enter the workforce—and to be more open to cultural differences and how I can implement them into cultural representation in my field. Also, studying abroad opened me up to a whole new plethora of majors I may be interested in.” — Maya Jade Alexander, marketing and advertising; Overland Park, Kan.; Class of 2022
