This year’s conference will mark the 20th year anniversary of the first Makkah conference. The current Saudi Dental Society (SDS) Board members have decided to make this important conference annually due to the demand from our colleagues. The SDS Board members agreed and gave their support in making this year’s conference a unique experience where we will invite Muslim researchers and scholars to come to Makkah and participate in this scientific meeting. Management of trauma in adult patients

Treatment planning anterior trauma and resorption in adult patients presents a complex restorative challenge. Every effort should be made to try and retain traumatized anterior teeth, in the first instance. This presentation highlights the importance of the multidisciplinary approach, use of cone beam computed tomography and application of MTA in the management of anterior trauma and resorptive cases. Many such cases are frequently referred from primary care to teaching hospitals (secondary/tertiary care centres). Three dimensional images are often used in the diagnosis and management of the more complex cases. The treatment provided ranges from preservation of the traumatized teeth to extraction of the teeth and provision of implants. The work here will highlight the management of anterior trauma and resorption in the adult patient via presentation of several trauma cases referred from primary care to a teaching hospital.

Regenerative Endodontics: A Review of Current and Future Status

Carious process and trauma are the two major reasons for loss of vitality and incomplete root formation in immature permanent teeth. The general consensus for clinical treatment of immature teeth with vital pulps is to preserve remaining normal vital tissue to allow continued physiological development and complete formation of the root endâ&#x20AC;&#x201C;apexogenesis. Whereas for those teeth with nonvital pulps, it is to clean and fill the canals with Ca(OH)2, the most commonly used material, to induce the formation of a calcified barrier at the open apexâ&#x20AC;&#x201C; apexification. Despite the mid-90% success rate for this technique, there are several drawbacks to it, which include multiple appointments over an extended period of time and therefore high needed patient compliance. In addition, there is the increased susceptibility to fracture and coronal microleakage during the long follow-up period. New materials and techniques have been developed to reach this same goal with improved results, to allow any possible apexogenesis to occur.

Applications of Cone-Beam Volumetric Tomography in Endodontics

For many years in dentistry we have been examining areas of interest radiographically in 2 dimensions only. The ability to view and analyze those areas of interest in 3 dimensions can benefit all dental clinicians dramatically. Cone-Beam volumetric tomography (CBVT) has been designed for dental applications. When comparing CBVT to sliced-image data of conventional computed tomography (CT) imaging, CBVT captures a cylindrical volume of data in one acquisition and thus offers distinct advantages over conventional medical CT. These advantages include more accuracy, greater resolution, reduction of scan-time, and reduction of radiation dose. Specific endodontic applications of CBVT are being identified as the technology is being further advanced and becoming more prevalent. CBVT has great potential to become a valuable tool in the modern endodontic practice.

Healing and Repair Potential of Periapical Tissues of Pulpal Origin

Infection is the primary aetiology of pulp and periapical inflammatory disease that has a significant impact on pulp and periapical tissue wound healing. The ultimate goal of wound healing is to restore the original architecture and biological function of the injured tissue. In Endodontics, the main ideal objective of treatment (non-surgical and surgical) of established endodontic diseases (infectious/inflammatory pulpal and periapical disease) is to achieve wound healing by repair or by a combination of repair and regeneration. It requires recruitment and differentiation of progenitor/stem cells into tissue-committed somatic cells, such as fibroblasts, macrophages, cementoblasts and osteoblasts. This presentation will discuss this issue. Different clinical cases will be presented.

In the past century, human life expectancy has almost doubled and major changes in the quality of life have occurred. An increase in people over the age of 65 who retain their teeth also has affected dentistry, with more attention being paid to the complex needs of this older population. All-ceramic restorative systems are rapidly growing in number; advancements in techniques and materials have allowed their use as metal free restorations. Materials fabricated for use in computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) systems have a significant impact in All-Ceramic restorations. Today with the new advancement in CAD/CAM technology, ceramic restorations are even competing with conventional PFM restorations in all aspects of dentistry. Restoration of endodontically treated teeth presents a challenging problem because of the loss of tooth structure by caries, fracture, defective restorations and endodontic cavity preparation. Studies have indicated that posts dose not strengthen or reinforce endodonticaly treated teeth. Post space preparation weakening the remaining tooth structure by Increase risk of preparation errors which may lead to ledge formation, Root perforation, or Root fracture. Fiber reinforced posts are translucent with better light transmission that improves the optical effects of esthetic restorations. However, the post / composite still relatively weak as coupling of epoxy resin based posts to resin composite is hampered by the absence of chemical union between epoxy resinous matrix and methacrylate based resin.

Tooth discoloration is an increasingly common problem, particularly as people are keeping their teeth for longer. As well as external staining from foods and beverages, intrinsic staining also leads to tooth discoloration. Loss of tooth vitality, trauma and endodontic treatment are all causes of intrinsic discoloration. Bleaching is a conservative treatment modality in the management of tooth discoloration. The mechanism of bleaching, bleaching techniques (vital and non vital) and indications/contraindications of bleaching will be presented. Systematic approach in evaluating and treating esthetic cases

In full mouth reconstruction cases with a high demand for esthetic result, Patient aesthetic expectations and smile enhancement can be achieved through the use of facial and dentolabial analysis. Treatment planning according to facial architecture and dental configuration allows function and harmonious aesthetics to be improved. This result can be examined by using provisional restorations which it provide more than an intermediate functional and protective covering of teeth that have been prepared for indirect restorations. They provide the opportunity to build a relationship with the patient, to more clearly achieve the patientâ&#x20AC;şs aesthetic expectations, to build patient hygiene skills and habits, and to learn what is ideal for patients occlusally, phonetically, and aesthetically. Maxillary sinus augmentation: techniques and complications

To be a candidate for the dental implant procedure, a patient must have sufficient bone in the maxillary and mandibular ridge to support these implants. Anatomic limitations often associated with the posterior maxilla are flat palatal vault, deficient alveolar height, increased pneumatization of the maxillary sinus, and close approximation of the sinus to crestal bone. With all these, maxillary posterior edentulous region presents with unique and challenging conditions in implant dentistry. It is well-‐accepted technique to treat the loss of vertical bone height in the posterior maxilla performed in two ways: A lateral window technique and an osteotome sinus floor elevation technique and placing bone-‐graft material in the maxillary sinus to increase the heightand width of the available bone.

Guided Bone Regeneration (GBR)-‐ Indications, materials & techniques for success

Guided bone regeneration is a widely used technique to augment alveolar ridge defects to allow implant placement and improve the final esthetic outcomes of implant--‐supportedrestorations.It is a surgical procedure that consists of the placement of cell--‐occlusive physical barrier between the connective tissue and the alveolar bone defect and creates protected space in which the bloodclot and the graft are stabilized. Since the introduction of guided bone regeneration, which is based on the theory of guided tissue regeneration, scientific evidence has demonstrated its effectiveness in regeneratinglostbone.A biologically based technique must be used for clinical success and to avoid the occurrence of treatment complications that could be patient--‐, material--‐ or technique--‐related. Should complications associated with guided bone regeneration occur, these must be treated as soon as possible.

Validity of Growth hormone and Melatonin mixture locally applied around immediate implants

There is no uniform strategy about the optimal implant yet. The foundation of implant success is osseointegration, the quality, quantity and rate of which is of importance. The aim of the study is to evaluate the effect of growth hormone and melatonin mixture on osseointegration around immediate implants after 3, 6 and 9 months in human. Results as regard bone density were statistically non significant in all test periods, while the transition period 36months was statistically significant in test and control. In conclusion, Growth hormone and melatonin mixture in a single large dose at time of surgery did not affect bone density of the new bone formed around an immediate implant.

The presentation, based on current research findings, will aim to demonstrate and highlight the important surgical and restorative dimensions for predictably achieving and maintaining aesthetically optimised implant restorations. Dental implants have become the ideal remedy for fixed prosthetic restoration of edentulous spaces in the dental arch and one of the most acceptable and esthetic solutions of modern dentistry. The ever evolving field is reaching dizzy heights with more and more bio-esthetically-compatible materials used both for the supra and subperiosteal components. This presentation is directed towards the conditions or situations with regards to oral pathologic perspective that can seriously compromise the longevity and success of the dental implant. Behavior Guidance: Critical Moments of a Pediatric Dental

General dental practitioners often do not feel comfortable treating young children due to fear of behavioral challenge that these children pose to them. However, in reality majority of the children are well behaved and compliant dental patients, and can be managed in dental clinic if appropriate behavioral guidance is provided to them. It is very important that these young patients are handled appropriately to maintain their cooperation. A dentist who wishes to perform dentistry in children needs to have knowledge and ability in how to guide these good children especially during the critical stages of a dental appointment. The objective of the presentation is to discuss simple strategies that will help dental practitioners to manage a child successfully through various critical moments of a dental appointment; such as possible separation of the child from parents, getting into dental chair, the injection, dental procedure, end of the appointment and returning to the parents.

Oral Midazolam: A Valuable Option in Pediatric Dental Sedation

Midazolam, an increasingly popular oral sedation agent in children, has several characteristics such as safety of use (high therapeutic index and availability of antagonistic agent), rapid onset and some degree of anterograde amnesia that makes it a desirable sedation agent in children. This presentation discusses various aspects of oral midazolam sedation including; oral route of sedation, indications & pharmacokinetics of midazolam, range of oral dose, midazolam antagonist, and complete clinical procedure. The presentation also includes general guidelines for oral sedation. The need for appropriate training (for personnel) in sedation, provision of appropriate equipment/monitoring devices and presence of rescue mechanisms is also emphasized

Screening Patients for Orthodontic Diagnosis

Early orthodontic intervention is appropriate in patients exhibiting certain occlusal problems that could continue to worsen while also becoming more difficult to treat at a later stage of dental and skeletal development. Problems not diagnosed and treated early enough can hinder the normal craniofacial development of the respective child. This program will provide the participants with an overview of early interceptive orthodontic treatment cases with a special focus on the anterior cross biteâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s etiology, diagnosis and treatment options. A case report of successful treatment will be presented demonstrating how early diagnosis and treatment improves oral function and social interactions.

Titanium Miniplate in growth modification of Class III malocclusion. What do we know?

A number of treatment options for Class III malocclusion have been reported. Early intervention incorporating growth modification allows the clinician to attempt mandibular growth restrain and promote the forward growth of the maxilla. Recent research has shown interesting and promising results in class III malocclusion growth modification with the use of class III elastics between miniplate skeletal anchorage in the upper and lower jaw. During this lecture I will give an overview of this treatment modality and the research involved.

The Holistic Approach In Special Care Dentistry

The WHO estimates that there are over a billion people with disabilities worldwide. In KSA the people with disabilities are underreported. General dentists often find this population too challenging to treat due to several factors such as their complex level of needs and difficulties in communication, creating great barriers to access mainstream dentistry by this population. It has been estimated that 90% of people requiring SCD can receive treatment in a local, primary care centre; however the provision of optimal SCD in a primary care setting depends upon adequate education and training for the whole dental team. This lecture is an overview that aims to increase the knowledge about Special Care Dentistry (SCD), raise awareness toward developing SCD holistic approach and encourages education, team working and positive attitudes towards disability within the whole dental team.

The Role of Honey in Oral and Teeth Health

Manuka is a unique honey that possesses strong â&#x20AC;&#x201C;both in vivo and in vitro- antimicrobial and antibiofilm activities thereby its ability to eradicate and hinder adherence of bacterial cells that are involved in dental caries, canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be ignored. The potential therapeutic role of Manuka honey most probably refer to its components of usual peroxide and unusual non-peroxide active â&#x20AC;&#x201C;NPA factors or unique Manuka Factor-UMF that are responsible for its valuable antimicrobial and anti bioadherence activities. The efficacy of Manuka honey in treatment of medical levels gingivitis and gingival bleeding also has been reported. In conclusion, although these amazing evidences require more patients and volunteers, the use of natural alternative agents such as Manuka honey has increased in last few years in developed countries nevertheless it has less attention in our countries and region.
