Note: Name can be Al-Houssan, Al-houssan, or Alhoussan Dr. Ammr Al-Houssan is a Canadian international medical graduate who studied abroad at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland in a direct entry medicine program. This allowed him to pursue medicine at a young and passionate age, as well as expand his global footprint. He achieved his MB BCh BAO degree with Honours in 2019. He is an aspiring general surgeon with commitment to making a difference in healthcare and the younger generation to come.

Ammr Al-Houssan aspires to complete his surgical residency training at the University of Connecticut and hopes to pursue fellowship training and establish his practice to play a positive and transformative role in the lives of his patients. Al-Houssan came of age in the National Capital Region of Canada. An assiduous student with a strong interest in science, he earned his Ontario Secondary School Diploma from the Earl of March Secondary School in the Ottawa suburb of Kanata in 2013. Rather than pursue a premedical baccalaureate track at a North American university, Al-Houssan successfully secured admission into RCSI's direct entry medical program in Dublin, Ireland. A Commitment to Medical Education and Research While attending RCSI, Al-Houssan excelled in his studies. He was involved in a number of leadership roles. He served as a Class Representative in his last 3 years. He held office as a committee member of the Emergency Society for 2 years, as well as a Surgical Skills Tutor for the Surgical Society where he taught students the fundamentals of suturing and laparoscopic skills. During his time at RCSI, Al-Houssan also participated in substantial research that allowed him to become a co-author and contributor for peer-reviewed, scholarly studies. For almost 3 years, he participated in research involving cat allergy testing. He worked with Red Maple Trials in Ottawa, Canada to validate the first naturalistic cat allergy exposure chamber in the city. The research appeared in the European Respiratory Journal as well as the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology. At the age of 24, Al-Houssan completed his medical education at RCSI in 2019. His scores, grades, and examinations placed him in the top 15% of his class. Upon graduation, he took possession of his Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery, and Bachelor of Obstetrics (MB, BCh, BAO) with Honours distinction. While excelling in his program, Al-Houssan also completed multiple medical licensing examinations outside of his standard curriculum for both Canada and the United States, scoring all above national average. Notably, he performed in the 99th percentile on the National Assessment Collaboration examination of Objective Structured Clinical Examination (NAC OSCE) of Canada, which evaluated the fitness of graduates from non-Canadian medical schools.


A Focus on Patient Care Upon graduating and receiving his medical qualification, Al-Houssan put his training into practice immediately during a two-year general surgery residency at the University of Connecticut as a preliminary resident. There, he worked full-time rotating through multiple hospitals in Hartford and Farmington, Connecticut including the only two level 1 trauma centers in the region. While working as a general surgery resident, Al-Houssan gained extensive experience working in many facets of patient care. His successful experience there allowed him to be accepted as a categorical resident at UConn, allowing him to complete his 5-year surgical residency training. Hobbies and Personal Interests Away from the medical profession, Ammr Al-Houssan enjoys participating in various health and fitness activities. Sports interests include ice hockey, snowboarding, and soccer, for which he has participated in for more than 15 years. He also has a keen interest in the study of wristwatches (horology). He finds it fascinating to wear, admire, trade, and collect watches that have various sentimental value. Al-Houssan has a strong interest in automobiles, metal manufacturing, and welding. He attended workshop classes throughout his 4 years of highschool and earned the highest mark in the metal manufacturing course he took while in twelfth grade at Earl of March Secondary School.
