uch has been made of the so-called craft beer revolution in recent years, and rightly so. Gone are the days when beer enthusiasts had to search long and hard to find a bar that provided more than just the ubiquitous, massproduced brands, with the rise of speciality beer bars in Edinburgh reflecting the public’s increased appreciation for small-batch, big-story beers. Provenance has been a buzzword attached to beer for some time now, with independent breweries placing special emphasis on a beer’s origin and the story attached to its production. Luckily, Edinburgh’s bartenders have kept apace with changes on the beer landscape, and the good men and women who pour the pints at these listed bars will happily regale the inquisitive customer on just how a certain beer made its way to the venue’s fridges or fonts. The diversity of bars listed here demonstrates the numerous varieties of beer now available in the city, and whether you prefer cask ales or continental lagers, German wheat beers or Belgian Trappist ales, American craft beers or French spirit-lagers, then you’ll be able to find somewhere that caters to your tastes with relative ease. Once you’ve found your beer bar of choice, kick back, raise your glass and say ‘three cheers for beers!’ The Guildford Arms on West Register Street has an excellent selection of real ales and also hosts monthly beer events that highlight local breweries, while The Abbotsford on Rose Street is a traditional bar with a fine selection of ales and whisky. Another great spot for ales in The Cumberland Bar on Cumberland Street, which has eight ale taps and a healthy range of bottled beers too, while Jeremiah’s Taproom on Elm Row has an extensive range of local and worldwide craft beers. The newly opened Usher’s of Edinburgh takes craft beer seriously, with 20 guest taps hosting a frequently rotating selection of guest beers. Clerk’s on South Clerk Street is a modern gastropub that combines great craft beer with home-smoked food, while Montpeliers Bruntsfield is an Edinburgh institution that has recently undergone a massive renovation, including a substantial expansion of its draught beer range. Finally, Indigo Yard in Charlotte Lane has 26 beers and ciders on draught, and has recently won the Molson Coors Champion Beer Pub of Scotland 2014. 4

he Abbotsford is a great traditional bar with an excellent selection of British real ales, and five rotating cask taps. The bar is steeped in tradition, featuring an island bar and Edwardian dĂŠcor, and with a no-music policy and a fantastic whisky selection, The Abbotsford is a great place to visit for a proper Scottish pub experience. The Scottish themed menu in the Above Abbotsford restaurant features Specials such as Puddledub Farm Lamb rump with Patatas A Lo Pobra and a deep red wine jus along with sharing platters and traditional pub favourites.

Clerk’s Bar

lerk’s Bar is unmistakeably a bar for beer lovers, with three cask and three craft beers on tap at all times as well as a broad range of bottled beers that includes craft offerings alongside more familiar lager brands. As for food, the sign above the door reads ‘fresh food cooked slow’, so it should come as no surprise that Clerk’s specialises in home-smoked dishes such as pulled pork and baby back ribs, as well as a good range of burgers, burritos and hot dogs. If you want to sample a few different meats, a combination of platters are available to suit any palate. Clerk’s is also a good destination for watching live sport, with five screens showing three different games at any one time. Big matches from the Scottish and English leagues as well as all other major sporting events are all shown.

The Guildford prides itself on its range of real ales, with 10 taps hosting a range of rotating brews from around the UK. The bottled selection is good too, ranging from established favourites to Belgian fruit beers. The pub also hosts monthly beer events which highlight local breweries and speciality ales, as well as larger events twice a year. The upstairs ‘Gallery’ restaurant specialises in Scottish seafood and beef, freshly prepared on the premises, and is definitely worth a visit.

ince 1996, Indigo Yard has been a go-to destination for those wanting to enjoy the finer things in life in Edinburgh’s West End. The main bar sits in a stunning, rustic, indoor courtyard, where customers can sample the latest addition to Indigo Yard’s extensive drinks menu. The craft beer selection in particular displays an impressive attention to detail, with 26 locally and internationally brewed artisan beers available on draught, as well as numerous bottled options. Every Friday evening the bar hosts a ‘Meet the Makers’ night, offering its regulars the chance to meet local suppliers and sample their wares, another example of Indigo Yard’s passionate and innovative approach to quality produce. The bar has also won the Molson Coors Champion Beer Pub of Scotland at the 2014 DRAM Awards. 9

eremiah’s Taproom at the top of Leith Walk is an ideal location for those seeking quality drinks and homemade food. With over 16 taps the bar showcases an extensive range of both local and worldwide craft beers and lagers, and the selection of bottled beers is pretty impressive too. The food menu includes piled high burgers, spicy hot dogs and pulled pork, alongside classics such as beer battered haddock and macaroni cheese. A large breakfast menu is served until 12 noon daily, and until 3pm at the weekend, and if it’s comfort food you need, the bar’s delicious Sunday Roast is an everpopular hit with the bar’s regulars. Jeremiah’s is family friendly, and you can bring your dog along as well.

aving occupied the same spot on Bruntsfield Place for over 20 years and counting, the key to Montpeliersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; longevity has been its focus on the fundamentals; stylish surroundings, classic drinks and good quality dining. Having recently undergone a major refurbishment, Montpeliers has also greatly expanded its beer selection, with over 20 on draught ranging from world lagers to local craft beers, and an even larger bottled selection. The overhanging canopies covering the outdoor seating area lend Montpeliers the air of a Parisian brasserie, and this theme is continued in the expansive drinks menu which features an abundance of wines by the glass. Usher’s of Edinburgh

sher’s of Edinburgh, a basement bar specialising in craft beers, is named after the family who founded Usher’s Brewery and is situated in the cellar of the former family home. With 15 draught taps and five cask pumps Usher’s only stock guest beers, leaving the selection in a regular state of rotation. Tap takeovers should also feature regularly, with brewers from across the UK exclusively showcasing their range over a number of days. The food menu is a cut above regular pub-grub, with dishes such as curried lamb neck and pot roasted pollock proving popular with the bar’s everincreasing band of regulars. Through the wonders of technology Usher’s customers can now share their thoughts on the beers of the moment by using Untappd, an online beer rating site that connects directly to Usher’s current guest list.

here are few drinks more satisfying than a good cocktail made well, and Edinburgh is undoubtedly the cocktail capital of Scotland, with the country’s very best mixologists working in the city. You can now find all manner of weird and wonderful ingredients on the city’s back-bars, with super premium spirits imported from around the globe to blend together in search of the perfect libation. Yet as strange as it may sound, there’s more to a good cocktail than mixed spirits. The bartender is an indispensable component of what makes a great cocktail, not only for his or her mixing ability and knowledge but also for their personality; a little banter at the bar goes a long way towards a memorable night out. The featured cocktail bars are modern, stylish, and most importantly, fun; the cartoon snobbery attached to cocktail bars in the not too distant past has gone the way of sparklers in your drink, and the city’s most talented bartenders are only too happy to mix up a concoction styled exactly to your needs. Amicus Apple on Frederick Street is a down to earth cocktail bar that has a permanent party vibe seven days a week, while Rick’s on the same street is home to a team of dedicated and talented mixologists using their own in-house syrups, bitters and home-grown herbs. Element on Rose Street is an ever-popular destination for those looking to eat, drink and relax, as is Monboddo in the Grassmarket, a versatile bar that attracts everyone from office workers to pre-club drinkers. George Street is home to both Le Monde and Tigerlily, two of Edinburgh’s best known bars that are renowned for their style, glamour and exceptional cocktails, and Angels Share on Hope Street is an opulent upmarket venue with the feel of a New York style bar. The recently opened Panda & Sons on Queen Street is an easy to miss speakeasy that is owned by one of the city’s most decorated mixologists, and Sygn on Charlotte Lane is an award-winning bar that mixes a mean cocktail. t’s quite fitting that Amicus Apple’s cocktail list shares many of the features of the bar itself, being stylish, contemporary and clearly not taking itself too seriously. This isn’t intended as a slight; Amicus Apple is about as down to earth as a city centre cocktail bar can be, contributing greatly to its laid-back, homely atmosphere. Famous for its cocktails, each lovingly prepared and expertly presented, the bar staff are always more than happy to mix your favourite tipple should it not be on their list. The bar has a permanent Friday night feel about it regardless of the day of the week, with the mood lighting and funky music all adding the vivacious vibe.

t would be extremely easy to miss Panda & Sons if you weren’t in the know. Sandwiched between a newsagent and an estate agent, the bar’s frontage echoes that of a traditional barbershop and there’s no obvious signs that the venue houses one of the city’s best cocktail bars. Owned by Iain McPherson, one of Edinburgh’s most decorated mixologists, Panda & Sons is a high-end, speakeasy bar that succeeds in accommodating all ages and tastes. The cocktail menu is the real attraction of course, with appropriately named house favourites Red Panda and Bamboo Cocktail headlining an inimitable, superlative list.

igerlily is a bar well-befitting Edinburgh’s famous and fashionable George Street, having built its reputation on exceptional service and an exhaustive and alluring list of cocktails. You can’t describe the bar without mentioning the stunning décor, featuring beaded curtains and mirrored mosaics. Yet this isn’t an example of style over substance, and the fact that Tigerlily remains as consistently busy as when it first opened speaks volumes of the quality of food and drink on offer. The flair and passion displayed by the bar’s expert mixologists keeps Tigerlily a vibrant, must-visit venue, with their trend-setting cocktails often imitated but never duplicated across Scotland.

s the capital city it’s only to be expected that Edinburgh would be home to a multitude of bars specialising in Scotland’s favourite export – uisge beatha, the water of life, or as it’s more simply known, whisky. The proliferation of whisky bars dotted around the city is perhaps an inevitability given the number of tourists that visit each year, eager to try out the very best of our national spirit, but this in no way detracts from the quality of specialist whisky bars to choose from. The bars selected for this guide go above and beyond simply stocking a few, well-known labels, catering for whisky devotees as well as inquisitive novices. Here you’ll find independent bottlings, single cask malts and drams from silent distilleries. Tasting flights, in which a customer can try a selection of small whiskies, are becoming increasingly popular, and many venues also offer private whisky tastings on site. The Bow Bar near the Grassmarket recently won the Wee Dram Whisky Bar of the Year award, and its knowledgable staff will be only too happy to guide you through the pub’s diverse range of whiskies. Up on The Royal Mile, the Scotch Whisky Experience one of Scotland’s top attractions for whisky tourists, with expert tour guides taking guests through every sip of the way. The venue is also home to Whisky Bar at The Amber Restaurant, which can boast over 360 whiskies on its shelves. The nearby Whiski Bar on High Street is one of the country’s premiere whisky venues, with rare and and vintage malts available, while its sister venue Whiski Rooms on North Bank Street has a specialist whisky shop and tasting rooms alongside the excellent bar. Wildest Drams on High Street is an independent restaurant and bar that specialises in whiskies from off the beaten track, and over in the New Town the Queens Arms on Frederick Street also trades in rare and unusual expressions. Scotch at the Balmoral on Princes Street is one of Edinburgh’s most famous whisky bars and is home to one of its largest collections too, with over 400 whiskies on offer. On William Street Teuchters Bar is one of Scotland’s Scotch Whisky Embassies and The Athletic Arms, or Diggers as it’s more commonly known, has a collection of over 250 malts and blends. 24

his pub is better known to the good folk of Edinburgh as ‘Diggers’. It has been given this nickname for generations, due to the fact that the pub is located between two graveyards and was frequented by the grave diggers quenching their thirst after a long day burying the dead. Nowadays, the bar has amassed a collection of over 250 single malts and goes a long way to prove that great real ale bars are also often great whisky bars too. It has been modernised over the years, but still boasts a real wooden floor, impressive gantry and eight tall beer founts. The whiskies on offer are served in a satisfying quarter gill measure, and in Glencairn glasses. The whisky also happens to be very reasonably priced, currently having a whisky festival with over 40 malts priced at £2.50, which is just one of the reasons that the pub is so popular.

he Bow Bar is a traditional Scottish bar and one of Edinburgh’s premier destinations for fans of Scotch whisky; indeed, the bar was recently awarded the Wee Dram Whisky Pub of the Year at the 2014 DRAM Awards. The reason for Bow Bar’s success lies not only in its extensive whisky selection but also the expertise and friendliness of the staff behind the bar, who are always happy to talk guests through the range and offer suggestions. With more than 280 malts on the mahogany gantry there is always a core of popular and familiar names, but the pub’s philosophy is experimental, featuring single casks, various finishes, new releases, requests, recommendations, whims and fancies. his Leith bar and restaurant was formerly the waiting room for the steam ferry from Leith to Aberdeen, and it really is a great wee find. It’s a bit like the tardis – from the outside it looks quite small, but once you’re through the door it seems to take on different dimensions, with a traditional wood panelled bar area complete with a large range of whiskies and cask ales. Further through there is a small snug area which is perfect for watching sport, and the venue also houses a dining area overlooking its outside area – a large floating pontoon. If it is too cold to eat and drink al fresco, there is an inviting stove in the bar area to warm the cockles. The bar menu offers Scottish staples such as fresh seafood and haggis, as well as a quirky ‘mug menu’, which sees food served from mugs, obviously.
