Whether you are looking for a licensing lawyer, a designer, a product that you would like to stock or you need some ideas on what brands are doing what in the Scottish market, this publication aims to make your life a bit easier. It's not easy keeping abreast of the changes in the trade – and you will see that various brands have jumped ships to new distributors or owners over the last 12 months. Our dial-a-brand section also gives you numbers to call for more information on the brands listed. If you are looking to refurbish or buy new equipment in 2013, change food supplier or source a new wholesaler, you'll find plenty of companies listed here that could help you with your business requirements in 2013. I’m sure you’ll find this years guide an essential tool for your business. You can also find it online at www.dramscotland.co.uk and an added feature this year allows you to click through to company and brand websites.

LICENSING
HOW LICENSEES CAN STAY ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE LAW Licensing has changed quite a bit over the course of the last few years - from the Licensing (Scotland) Act 2005 to the Alcohol etc. (Scotland) Act 2010 and the Criminal Justice and Licensing (Scotland) Act 2010. Here's a quick guide to some things you need to know to stay on the right side of the law. Most important: If in doubt, take advice!
A MISTAKE BY YOUR STAFF COULD COST YOU YOUR LICENCE! Your licence can be revoked or suspended as a result of a mistake made by your staff. If a staff member sells alcohol to someone under 18, you, as licence holder, can be prosecuted as well as your employee. It is not enough that all your staff have 2 hours training, although if they are involved in the service, delivery or sale of alcohol that is a requirement. It is not even enough that they are personal licence holders. The law makes clear that it is your responsibility to make sure that your staff are fully up-to-date and made aware of the changes and their obligations. All of the rules about promotions are conditions of your licence. If they are breached, your licence could be suspended or even revoked. It is recommended to carry out refresher training for staff at least every six months. If something goes wrong, the more information and training records you have the better. You should be able to show that you have a good system in place to prevent a breach of the law. Training is very important and keeping that training refreshed and up to date is just as important. Record all training - internal to the premises and that carried out by external training providers. Keep clear records and make sure these are updated and available for inspection on the premises by police or LSO’s. You are not required to do training all by yourself but make sure if you delegate this to managers that you check it is being regularly updated and that they are recording the training and keeping the records in the premises. Also make sure those doing the training are allowed to under the legislation. For the 2 hours training, the trainer must be a personal licence holder. Even if your staff have been with you a long time and you trust them, always remember as an operator you need to protect your livelihood.
6
AGE RELATED SALES – YOU MUST HAVE A POLICY FOR CHECKING YOUR CUSTOMER IS OVER 18 The minimum legal age of 18 has not changed but under the 2010 Acts premises must have a policy for checking they are not selling alcohol to persons under that age. If anyone serving believes a customer may be less than 25 years old, steps must be taken to verify the customer’s age. It is essential that all staff involved in the sale of alcohol are made aware of this policy. All staff should receive training and regular reminders. Posters and notices in staff areas and in the main shop are useful. Till prompts should be considered. All of this will help if a staff member fails to ask for ID from someone who is clearly under 25 years old and a test purchase failure is brought to the courts or to the licensing board’s attention. Detailed records should be kept of everything and a refusals book should be in place. If a sale is refused, this should be recorded. It is sensible to record as much information as possible, such as where ID is requested and produced. This shows a pattern of requesting ID. While that can be a challenge at a busy bar or till, the more information the better is the general rule. The policy held by each premises must be in writing and it should be checked and updated regularly. Acceptable ID is: passport, EU (photographic) driving licence; photographic ID card approved by the PASS scheme. No other ID is currently acceptable. Make sure staff know what genuine driving licences and ID cards look like – there are many fake and lookalike cards in circulation. Having this policy in place is a mandatory condition of all premises licences and must be adhered to. It is no longer voluntary.

LICENSING
NEW MANAGER? YOU HAVE JUST SEVEN DAYS TO TELL THE BOARD If the designated premises manager resigns, dies or ceases to act as premises manager for any other reason, the relevant licensing board must be notified within 7 days. That is 7 days – not 7 working days. This is a very tight time scale. If this is missed, premises can be forced to stop trading until an application to change the premises manager is lodged. As long as the 7 day notification time is met, from the date of the change to the premises manager there is a 6 week period available in which to lodge an application with the board to change those details. It does not have to be granted within 6 weeks, just lodged. The 6 week countdown begins on the date the change happens. If the 7 day deadline is missed, the premises would not properly be able to trade until the new manager appointment was lodged. This can be deemed to be granted as soon as it is lodged with the relevant board. If the 6 week deadline is missed, premises would have no designated premises manager on the premises licence until an application to name a new manager is lodged. That may mean the premises have to cease selling alcohol until then. It is important these time scales are met. If there is a change to the name or address of the premises licence holder or premises manager, the relevant licensing board must be notified within 1 month of the change.
DISPLAYING YOUR LICENCE AND KEEPING IT SAFE The licence comes in 2 parts – the summary and the main licence. The summary has to be ‘prominently’ displayed in the premises. This means it should be able to be seen by members of the public who are in the premises at all times. It should NOT be behind a counter or in an office – but should be accessible to the public. It is an offence not to display this properly. The main licence should not be displayed but should be kept in the premises. It is an offence not to be able to produce the licence when asked for it by the LSO or police. To avoid lost licences, a certified copy can be displayed and stored in the premises and the original kept in a safe location. Only the Clerk to a board or a solicitor can certify copy licences at present. DRAM SUPPLIERS GUIDE 2013
If the principal licence is lost stolen, this is serious and you must report that to the police. They will give you a reference number. To get a new principal premises licence certificate, an application must be made to the relevant licensing board. They are likely to ask for a note of the police reference number. Without that reference number, the board may refuse to issue you a new licence
PROMOTIONS : GOOD FOR BUSINESS - BUT YOU HAVE TO STICK TO THESE RULES Promotions were dealt with in the original Licensing (Scotland) Act 2005 but have been changed with the recent legislation. Mandatory conditions have been sent out by licensing boards in Scotland and every licence holder should now be displaying these. Premises can still have drinks promotions but must be careful not to breach these mandatory conditions. Each board area and their respective Licensing Standards Officers can apply slightly different views and interpretations to promotions - so take advice on these before going ahead. A “promotion” can be anything that encourages people to buy alcohol. It does not have to be advertising a specific product or brand. Even a sign saying ‘Cold Beer Sold Here’ would be considered a promotion. Things to think about include discounts and special offers. Alcohol cannot be given away free. Offers such as ‘three for £10’ are no longer acceptable. A single unit cannot be sold for more than a multi-pack price. If three cans of lager or three vodka and cokes are sold, the price for the three must be at least three times the price of the individual drinks. A single vodka and coke is sold at £1 therefore three vodkas and coke must be at least £3. You can no longer offer any of the following buy one, get one free; three for the price of two/five for the price of four and so on; cheapest free; buy six (or another quantity) and get 20% off. Off sale premises can have 2 alcohol display areas – one public area and a secure area (i.e. an area inaccessible to the public). In on sales premises, some boards do not require off sales areas to be shown. If you operate an on sales premises, but your licence allows you to sell alcohol for consumption off the premises, you may have to show your display areas such as behind the bar, wine fridges and similar on your plans. Changes to these areas may need a variation application so be very careful and take advice before going ahead with proposed changes. Alcohol and other goods can be displayed but there are restrictions on mixing displays of alcohol and non-alcoholic 7
DRAM Suppliers Guide 2013 v3_Layout 1 07/12/2012 19:41 Page 8
LICENSING goods. These apply only to the public areas – not the secure areas, which are normally behind a counter or bar. Alcohol, non-alcoholic drinks or anything which is packaged with alcohol can be displayed. Branded, non-alcoholic products in this area may now be displayed in this area, such as a sporting items bearing the logo of a drinks company, or clothing with a drink’s brand name. Newspapers, magazines and other publications can also be displayed. No alcohol can be displayed outwith the alcohol display areas. Any free newspaper, magazine or other publication which contains promotion of alcohol, cannot be displayed in the main store unless the space devoted to alcohol is less than 50% of the total space. The way promotions are advertised is also regulated. This includes not only the wording (and sometimes images) on posters, displays and leaflets but also ‘A boards’ on the street, window graphics and in-store magazines. A window display for an off sale premises which is outwith its alcohol display area, may not be used for alcohol promotions. Drinks promotions cannot be run within 200 metres from the boundary of the premises. The boundary is shown on the layout plan which is attached to the premises licence. Anything distributed within the 200 metre zone must not be a “drinks promotion”. Flyers that contain less than 50% of material promoting alcohol can be distributed.
Bus stops and passing buses were also a concern – how can premises be held responsible for promotions which are within 200 metres of their premises but are not associated with nor controlled by the premises? New regulations confirmed that operators can only be responsible for promotions which are in connection with the premises and you have some control over them. Even in-store tannoy announcements and radio cannot carry alcohol promotions, unless they are heard only in the alcohol display area. If the store is a dedicated off sales then that may not be an issue . Promotional material from drinks companies linked to alcohol promotions must be displayed in the authorised alcohol areas only. If these items are for sale and do not constitute a drinks promotion, they can be displayed anywhere in the premises. Operators must be careful not to run promotions, such as "five pints and you get a free hat or ball". If there are promotions being run in conjunction with sports events or other events, such as Christmas, St Patrick’s Day and so on, advice should be taken on how to incorporate the promotional goods without breaching the conditions.

LICENSING LAWYERS
FUNERALS - OCCASIONAL LICENCES AND EXTENDED HOURS Previously occasional licenses and extended hours caused problems because they could not be obtained at short notice. This particularly caused problems for funerals andante for public halls and other buildings where a function may have been arranged at less than 4 to 6 weeks notice required by most boards. Now, where the Licensing Board is satisfied that the application requires to be dealt with quickly the occasional licence can be advertised for less than 21 days to any period of not less than 24 hours. It is up to the Board to determine how short a period between 24 hours and 21 days. Extended hours to allow later opening at the start or end of a day are also given the same reduced periods, this time between 24 hours and 10 days.
PERSONAL LICENCE APPLICATIONS Personal licence applications have been made a little more difficult only because the applicant must sign the application and it cannot be signed by a solicitor or agent. On the plus side, this avoids operators or managers signing applications for staff and means all staff are therefore aware of what information has been included in any application for personal licence.
WHAT THE LICENSING STANDARD OFFICER CAN DO NOW... Licensing Standards Officers have more powers introduced by the Criminal Justice and Licensing (Scotland) Act 2010. They now have powers to enter, inspect and seize items. They can take copies of documents or entries in documents found on the premises and can seize and remove any substances, articles or documents found on the premises. They now also have the power to require any document which is stored in electronic form to be produced in a legible format. You are not required to produce a document if you could refuse to produce that document in any proceedings in any court on the grounds of confidentiality of communications. You can also refuse to produce it if to do so would incriminate that person, that person’s spouse or civil partner. Where a LSO seizes any substance, article or document, they must leave a notice on the premises stating what was seized and explaining why it was seized.

ALES BELHAVEN BEST n spite of competition from Caledonia Best, Greene King’s Belhaven Best remains the on-trade’s top-selling ale. The brand has been the official sponsor of the Scottish Golf Union for 13 years, making it the SGU’s longest-serving sponsor. Last year, Belhaven Black Stout was launched across the ontrade, and remains the newest addition to the Belhaven family,
I
alongside Belhaven Golden Ale – a lower strength golden ale with a 2.8% ABV. Now in its second year, the Belhaven Best Spring Cup happens at the Old Course Hotel in St Andrews, in March 2013. Belhaven’s five-year ‘Scotland’s Best’ campaign carried off the Marketing Strategy of the Year prize at the Scottish Business Awards 2012.
CALEDONIA BEST To mark the brand's first birthday, at the tail end of 2012, owners C&C unveiled a mix of projects being backed by its Seed Fund initiative. Its very first consumer ad campaign last year focused on the fact that Caledonia Best uses 100% Scottish barley, and contained the strapline ‘Only the Caledonia Best gets in.’ Perhaps we will see an even bigger push from the brand in 2013.
MCEWAN’S There hasn’t been much in the way of marketing support from Wells and Young’s in Scotland, but according to the brewer, things will be picking up a pace in 2013 through ‘major innovation and marketing support’. In 2012, Wells & Young’s support of the brand and the ale market in the on-trade included the launch of a series of limited edition cask ales. This iconic Scottish brand’s last major advertising outing was the ‘Aye’ campaign that ran on TV in late 2010.
JOHN SMITH’S John Smith’s is owned by Heineken UK, and maintains its position as the UK's number one selling ale. It is most readily associated with the world of horseracing and its nineyear sponsorship deal with the Grand National comes to an end in 2013, after the last race in April. The brand will continue to be involved with the sport at other events, including sponsorship of the John Smith’s Cup at York Races and the Northumberland Plate. This may mean more of a marketing push in the on-trade in the future. DRAM SUPPLIERS GUIDE 2013

Now in its seventh year in the UK market, Kopparberg is the Number 1 Packaged Cider brand in the Scottish On-Trade and continues to pioneer the development of the fruit cider category.

CHANGE YOUR PERSPECTIVE
GILT GIN WWW.GILTGIN.COM
DRAM Suppliers Guide 2013 v3_Layout 1 07/12/2012 19:44 Page 27
GIN GILT ilt is a new Scottish gin that takes the art of distillation to a new level. It is distilled in a unique copper pot still, designed to achieve an exacting standard. Only 100% malted barley is combined with the pure water of the mighty river Spey and a secret charcoal and chill filtration process perfects and finishes
G
the fifteen bubble plate distillation. Gilt’s signature is the light citrus botanicals which enhance its pedigree. It has the balance and fine flavour that meets the standards of the most discerning taste. Gilt is a supreme tribute to the Scottish pathfinders of generations past. Discover and enjoy this “single malt gin”.
GORDON'S Gordon’s remains the official gin of the Edinburgh Festival and it is the world's best selling London gin. First established in 1769 Gordon's gin is the main ingredient in the Vesper cocktail, as featured in the Casino Royale Bond movie. It's current advertising is made up of two ads... a dinner and party and a garden party starring Phil Glenister and Emilia Fox. Gordon's is very much a driver of the category which recent figures show is suffering a bit. CGA report a decline of 2%.
NO.3 LONDON DRY GIN This brand is a relative newcomer. Launched by Berry Bros and distributed by Maxxium, No. 3 definitely has standout on the back bar. The unusual green bottle, complete with metal key set into its glass, is undoubtedly a talking point among customers. The inspiration for the key comes from that used to open the door of ‘The Parlour’ – one of the oldest rooms in the Berry Brothers’ shop, which has stood in St. James’ since 1698 - the name No.3 also refers to the St James’s Street address. The company say that No.3 was created to be the last word in gin for a Dry Martini.
THE BOTANIST The Bruichladdich Distillery on Islay launched the island’s first gin, The Botanist. And as usual Bruichladdich didn't do anything by halves – this gin uses 31 botanticals of which 22 are native to the island. The Botanist stands out as the one to watch, as a lot of peat malt whisky drinkers are tempted to try this because it originates from Islay. They include Bog Myrtle leaves, Creeping Thistle flowers and Heather flowers... they are placed in a low, pressure lomond pot-still, called 'Ugly Betty' and then distilled. Plans for the brand seem to be in flux at the moment as the distillery was bought by Pernod Ricard last year. DRAM SUPPLIERS GUIDE 2013

Hold the bottle up to the light and you'll see it's full of real ginger pieces, brewed to a genuine old recipe to release the natural flavours of ginger. Bundaberg Ginger Beer contains no artificial colours or flavours delivering a superior taste in every bottle. There's even a diet variety!

All natural ginger beer ran activity at the tail-end of last year to spiceup the 31st of October with a “Happy Hollow’een” promotion to encourage new drinkers. Campaign point of sale included Happy Hollow’een shelf strips, ‘Not a Genuine Ginger?’ beer mats and ‘Super Natural All Natural’ posters.
STONE’S GINGER JOE Stone’s Ginger Joe is the alcoholic ginger beer from the Stone’s portfolio. Launched in February 2011, Stone’s Ginger Joe’s identity is inspired by ‘Ginger’ Joseph Stone, a moustachioed London greengrocer and the brand’s illustrious founder. Accolade Wines will continue to drive its “refreshingly-feisty” alcoholic ginger beer forward in the on-trade after landing listings with one of the UK’s biggest pub and bar groups, Yates in April of last year. Added to this, Ginger Joe became listed in one of the UK’s key on-trade wholesalers, Carlsberg UK and this considerably increased Ginger Joe’s presence in on-trade. DRAM SUPPLIERS GUIDE 2013

LAGER - DRAUGHT TENNENT’S ennent’s still holds its position as Scotland’s top-selling lager brand, and with sales in the on-trade growing to £335.6m (CGA, June 2012), and the stage is set for a healthy 2013, under the stewardship of MD John Gilligan. The launch late last year of the new Tennent’s glassware saw the brand hand the design reins over to consumers, asking them what
T
made them smile most about Scotland. The resulting glass design contained a mixture of the aspects that people love about their home country - from the ‘The Big Yin’, the ‘squadrons of midges’ and the ‘Tartan Army’ and the ‘Hampden Roar’. As well T in the Park of course, which last year attracted 85,000 people, the brand continues its sponsorship of the Old Firm.
STELLA ARTOIS The AB InBev-owned brand has gained an increased foothold in Scotland's on-trade. The latest CGA figures report that Stella is now Scotland's second-best selling draught, toppling Fosters, which is now in third place. It continues its sponsorship of horseracing and tennis, but both are confined to south of the border. At the time we went to press, there was no activity in the pipeline that directly targeted Scotland in 2013.
FOSTER’S Fosters, owned by Heineken, is now Scotland's third biggest draught (CGA) and continues to sponsor the Scottish Amateur Football Association in 2013. It also aligns itself with comedy, putting its weight behind The British Comedy Awards in December 2012, for the third consecutive year. It has sponsored the Edinburgh Comedy Festival for the last three years, as well as the Edinburgh Comedy Awards. Heineken has been appointed as the official supplier of beer to The Hydro – Scotland’s new home of live entertainment opening September 2013 at SECC in Glasgow, which will of course include Fosters. Its comedy association extends to its TV advertising and the 'Good Call' ads, featuring Brad and Dan.
CARLING Carling's affiliation with all things sport in Scotland is as strong as ever. This is set to continue in 2013 with the Molson Coors' owned brand throwing its weight not only behind the Scottish National Football team, but also the Scottish Cup, Scottish Rugby and is official beer at the national stadium, Hampden Park. In 2012 it increased marketing spend on the brand by a significant amount.

LIQUEURS
TEICHENNÉ SCHNAPPS lobal brands distribute this range of sweet Spanish fruit schnapps, the market leader in its home country since the late 80s. Flavour variants include Peach, Apple, Butterscotch and Chocolate. The Teichenné story began in 1956,
G
when Juan Teichenné Senaux began hand-making liqueurs in the small town of L'Arbo. The focus for 2013, say Global Brands, will be presenting the pitcher serve to the on-trade, as well as building the brand’s association with cocktail culture.
APEROL SPRITZ Aperol Spritz made a splash at the last Edinburgh Fringe Festival with its pop-up Speigeltent bar called The Aperol Garden. During its two-week festival stint, 30,000 Aperol shots were served, and the brand says that they are hoping to replicate the same success in 2013. All the signs are that the Aperol Garden will go ahead this year, and at the time we went to press owner Campari was just waiting on confirmation from the venue.
JÄGERMEISTER The German herbal liqueur is distributed by Cellar Trends and its popularity with Scotland's coveted youth market can't be underestimated. No surprise, then, that it has a mammoth presence on social networking sites like Facebook – with 620k Likes on its page. Jägermeister continues to show significant growth and is outperforming the overall spirits market in the UK, say Cellar Trends, compared to an deflated category overall.
BAILEYS Baileys underwent a massive brand re-launch at the tail end of last year, supported by a global advertising campaign called 'Cream with Spirit'. The ads are aimed squarely at the female market, and are designed to 'celebrate the spirit of modern womanhood' and will run, say owner Diageo, throughout 2013. It also promises other activity throughout the year stemming from the campaign, but no mention of any Scotland-specific events.

PPL
TSINGTAO hinese New Year is regarded as the most important Chinese holiday and the 10th February 2013 heralds in the Year of the Snake, so Tsingtao plan to support many celebratory events across the UK. Details will be published to the website. Legacy of Taste 2012
C
invited the brand’s Facebook and Twitter followers to recommend the best Chinese food the UK had to offer, with Chop Chop in Edinburgh making it to the final stages. The annual Dragon Masters ping pong tournament also happened in 2012, across UK pubs.
MILLER MGD remains the number one PPL in Scotland’s on-trade. In 2012, it benefited from a heavyweight advertising campaign called ‘Tonight, it’s Miller Time’, which also included a sponsorship of MTV. Let’s hope the brand doesn’t take its eye off the ball in Scotland in 2013.
CARLING ZEST Molson Coors ran a £2m campaign highlighting its seasonal beer, Carling Zest, in the summer of last year, after its launch across the on-trade in May 2012. Then came a £1.8m campaign to promote its winter variant – a follow up to summer Zest, which saw the beer blended with a hint of Spiced Orange, especially for the winter months and called ‘Get a zest for winter’. The beer is inviting users of its website to submit pictures proving they have a zest for winter in exchange for prizes throughout the coldest season.
BIRRA MORETTI Last year, Heineken launched its most extensive marketing campaigns to date for its Birra Moretti, as part of a wider strategy to globalise its premium world beer brands. The brewer rolled out a multimillion pound campaign to support it in the UK, featuring Facebook activity, sponsorship tie-ups, experiential events and sales promotions as well as print adverts. The beer was also the official beer sponsor of Jamie Oliver’s The Big Festival in September. Heineken say the Birra Moretti brand is its fastest growing beer in the UK, with sales rising by 34% during the first quarter of 2012. DRAM SUPPLIERS GUIDE 2013

RUM CAPTAIN MORGAN’S SPICED aptain Morgan’s Spiced, from Diageo, is worth £67m in the UK ontrade, where it is growing at +8% year on year.* In 2012, Diageo invested in the brand’s biggest ever marketing spend. The £5m campaigns ran through-the-line and included its first ever TV advertisement in Great Britain, as well as in-outlet activity. The ‘Got A Little Captain In You?’ creative asked consumers whether they embodied the spirit of the Captain through a range of humorous TV spots. The campaign was supported within the ontrade with the launch of the tankard serve,
C
which injected excitement and delivered an added value drinking experience for consumers. In addition, selected outlets received a visit from The Captain and his ‘Morganettes’, who kick-started the party with free samples and prizes. With 62% of the brand’s total on-trade volume share coming from Scottish ontrade sales, it is no surprise that Scotland is an important market. As a result, a significant proportion of the brand’s marketing spend is focused on Scotland and this will continue in 2013. * 1 Nielsen GB On Trade MAT to 06/10/12 (value sales)
THE KRAKEN Launching a new brand into a crowded market is a toughie, but The Kraken Black Spiced rum has been a breath of fresh air. Distributed by Marblehead, last year it ran some stylish monochrome ads around the theme of its mythical sea beast namesake. It has been hailed as one of the new generations of rums, which are being consumed by cool, young urbanites.
HAVANA CLUB Havana club may have climbed to the top spot on the International Wine and Spirits Research Elite Brand List 2012, but marketing and promotion in Scotland have been pretty thin on the ground, aside from the Havana Club Mojito Embassy. The ‘hands-on’ Mojito pop up bar pitched up at last year’s Edinburgh Festival, to teach consumers how to make an authentic Cuban Mojito using Havana Club 3 Year Old. It will be travelling the world throughout 2013.
OVD OVD is owned by William Grant & Sons, and is Scotland's number one dark rum. It also remains the best-selling Demerara rum in the world. Its ‘Every Man’s got a Sweet Spot’ campaign ran in the summer of 2012, with a strong on-trade focus, which will hopefully be replicated in 2013.

TEQUILA JOSE CUERVO ose Cuervo is the original tequila from tequila! Over 200 years ago Jose Antonio de Cuervo acquired land in the rich lava fields of the tequila volcano – his purpose was to create a fine, unique spirit from the indigenous blue agave: Tequila Cuervo. Today, at the same distillery, Cuervo family continues to produce its unique range of tequilas enjoyed the world over. Cuervo remains the number 1 tequila in Scotland with over 67% of the share (ref CGA ontrade to 01/09/2012). The priority for Cuervo in 2013 is to gain a
J
bigger share of the shot market. With a planned investment of ÂŁ1.5 million through experiential sampling and a highly successful floor selling campaign, Cuervo will continue the message of ICE COLD serves in the OnTrade. To deliver the ICE COLD message, Cuervo have invested in bespoke freezers, glassware and POS material. Cuervo Especial Reposado, aged in oak barrels, contains all the magic of the Blue Agave. Cuervo Especial Silver has a lighter, crisper taste. Both are best enjoyed ICE COLD.
PATRON The Cellar Trends distributed ultra-premium tequila brand has a strong online presence in the form of its Patron Social Club that allows tequila enthusiasts to keep track of the brand's most up-to-date news. Patron's promotional activity hinges very much on high profile music and fashion events, but Scotland doesn't really figure very highly at all. There were no events listed for 2013, at the time we went to press.
OLMECA Olmeca continues to build its association with the international dance music scene, using its social media presence to engage future DJs. It is currently inviting consumers to 'Be the DJ' where the they can remix a track by DJ Steve Aoki, with the winning entry getting the chance to open for the DJ ahead of one of his sets, as well as becoming a Mixmag resident DJ in Ibiza. This is a global marketing campaign and there's no UK-specific activity planned for 2013.
SAUZA Sauza is distributed by Maxxium UK and, much like last year, there doesn't look to be any planned marketing activity to engage its UK consumers in 2013. The brand did launch a series of tongue-in-cheek ads in the US last year, encouraging women to 'make it with a fireman' centering on making margaritas using Sauza Blue tequila, but they didn't make it across the pond.

WHISKY - BLENDED
WHYTE & MACKAY he biggest news for the brand is the finalising of the deal between Whyte & Mackay owners, United Spirits Limited, and Diageo, that will see the latter acquire a 27.4% stake in USL. Scots Formula 1 driver Paul Di Resta is the global ambassador for Whyte &
T
Mackay, which continues to be the Scottish on-trade’s second biggest selling blended whisky after The Famous Grouse. Master Blender Richard Paterson has also been fairly active on social media sites such as Twitter, banging the drum for the brand.
ISLE OF SKYE Owner Ian Macleod Distillers unveiled a brand new look for its entire Isle of Skye blended range that’s designed to reflect the Red and Black Hills of the Cuillin Mountains. The new label also introduces a watercolour sunset over the Isle of Skye, and signature of the company's founder, Ian Macleod, appears on the label and bottle top. The brand was the official sponsor of the Isle of Skye Highland Games 2012.
BELLS Bell’s partnered with British Forces charity, Help for Heroes, in November 2012 to launch a Limited Edition ‘Bell’s Help for Heroes’ bottle, as part of its mission to raise £1 million for the charity by organising the world’s biggest pub quiz. Lots of pubs in Scotland took part in the fundraising.
DEWARS Owner Bacardi last year installed a brand new Dewar's Global Brand Ambassador in the form of Andy Gemmell. He will take care of Dewar’s Whisky and its single malts, and his role will involve trade advocacy, strategy and new product development. Although Scotland hasn’t been earmarked for any advertising or marketing in 2013 as such, Bacardi has confirmed that this year Andy will be working closely with key bars in Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen. Filmhouse Cinema to bring a Taste of the Extraordinary to cinema-goers in the capital, sponsoring a series of film showings, and serving Drambuie cocktails that will continue well into 2013. A new and surreal TV and film advert was added to the Taste of the Extraordinary campaign last year.
RED STAG Jim Beam cherry flavoured whisky Red Stag is distributed by Maxxium UK which launched in the UK in 2012. Last year, it ran a campaign called Fresh Tracks, through its association with The Academy Music Group. Red Stag ran activity in 14 major music venues in 11 cities across the UK, including Glasgow. Nothing had been signed off for the brand's 2013 plans at the time we went to press.
JACK DANIELS HONEY This is Jack Daniel's first flavoured whisky and the Tennessee whisky maker calls it 'a little bit of honey and a whole lotta Jack' and it has been designed to be consumed as a chilled shot. It was launched into the UK in July 2012 by Bacardi Brown-Forman Brands - the first major product innovation for the last 14 years. At launch the Mark Davis, Jack Daniel's area marketing manager for UK and Ireland, said total investment in the brand in the first year would exceed £2m.
EVAN WILLIAMS FLAVOURED RESERVE KENTUCKY BOURBON LIQUEUR This is a new kid on the block in Scotland, and Evan Williams Flavoured Reserves have three flavour variants - honey, cherry and cinnamon. The labelling is quite vivid, for instance, Cherry Reserve has a clear label with bright red cherries. The Cinnamon Reserve features similar packaging, but with cinnamon sticks. GLENGOYNE t’s almost 10 years since Ian Macleod Distillers acquired Glengoyne, and in that time, say the company, global sales volumes have increased by 250%. As well as a new strap line, ‘Worth the Wait’, the whisky was also treated to new packaging last year. The new packaging promotes the brand’s
I
provenance, highlighting its unhurried distillation process reportedly the slowest of all – and the goose connection. Glengoyne means ‘glen of the wild geese’ in Gaelic, and Mr & Mrs Goose who feature on the label, also appear to be kissing if you study the labels long enough, apparently.
BOWMORE Last year, distiller Morrison Bowmore updated the bottle design and cemented its position as the single malt specialist by being voted Whisky Distiller of the year at the 2013 Icons of Whisky Awards Scotland. Bowmore teamed up with foraging expert, John Wright, and chef Gill Meller, both from Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall’s River Cottage TV series, to launch a series of seafood and dessert recipes to match perfectly with Bowmore Single Malt.
BENROMACH It was all go for Benromach last year. It launched a brand new website and also sponsored the Arts and Business Awards 2012. For the last two years, Benromach, in partnership with the National Theatre of Scotland, has sponsored The Strange Undoing of Prudencia Hart which last year completed a UK tour taking theatre into pubs. It then went on to tour North America. The Benromach also scooped a top award at the Cathay Pacific Hong Kong International Wine & Spirit Competition for its flagship Single Malt Scotch Whisky, Benromach 10 Year Old.
THE GLENROTHES Berry Bros & Rudd Spirits, owners of The Glenrothes, last year launched the first in a new series of single-cask bottlings from the 60s and 70s, called The Extraordinary Cask, beginning with The Glenrothers 1970 Extraordinary Cask 10573. Further releases have been earmarked for 2013. Since 1994, The Glenrothes has released less than one single cask a year, however this latest cache of casks came to the attention of Ronnie Cox, Brands Heritage Director, and after a lengthy process of assessment, a small number of them were selected as being worthy of being bottled as The Glenrothes.
