McEWAN’S It’s been an exciting couple of years for McEwan’s. Following the set-up of a new Edinburgh based team in 2013, and launch of the smooth, refreshing McEwan’s Red, positive news continues to flow from the company. With the growth and increased popularity of cask ale in Scotland, 2014 saw the launch of McEwan’s IPA, Amber and Signature in cask. The positive reaction from the trade and consumers means that we’ll be seeing a lot more of McEwan’s in 2015 and beyond. Get in touch with your usual McEwan’s contact to find out more.
SULWATH From small beginnings in early 1996, Sulwath has firmly put Dumfries & Galloway on the real ale map; with a loyal band of beer fans, numerous awards and plaudits for its brews. SUPPLIERS GUIDE 2015 13
Founded in 1869 by George Lorimer and Robert Clark, the Caledonian Brewery still brews beer by hand in Edinburgh.
We use Maritime Malt from the rich soil of the East Coast, which is recognised as the world’s best brewing barley, and fresh-packed, full-leaf, whole-flowerhops to give fresh, enticing aromas, crisp bitterness and life to the head of the beer.
Harnessing Britain’s last direct open fired coppers provides a natural soft malt caramelisation from the brewing hotspot. The foundation of the honest mellowness of the Caledonian flavour is enhanced with an intricate and exceptional hop character.
As proud custodians of a brewery blessed with Victorian ingenuity we want to share our love of beer.

2014 was a big year for Magners in the on trade. Following the success of its Summer Blippar Rate of Sale Activity, consumers have the chance to win a variety of prizes including Barbour jackets and The North Face gloves as part of Magners’ updated festive promotion. The instant-win promotion allows customers to interact with the fun and spontaneous nature of the Magners brand and will be supported with creative on trade collateral including posters and TV stills. In Summer 2014, Magners launched the new-look Magners Orchard Berries (ABV 4%) to the UK on trade. Retaining the delicious flavour of Magners Berry, the inside remains the same: a mouth-watering pear cider, packed with a juicy blend of ripe strawberries, tangy raspberries and zesty blackcurrants. Available in a 500ml flint bottle, the new format is redesigned to enhance stand out on shelf. 2015 is set to be a bumper year for the brand and as it continues its support for comedy and original talent, the brand will invest heavily in the on trade to support this activity. In addition Magners will continue its sponsorship of Celtic Football Club as well as the ‘Goals for Charity’ initiative.

BULMERS Bulmers launched a new #LiveColourful campaign at the end of November in an effort to persuade consumers to consume cider during the winter. It put apple trees at the heart of digital activity centred on ‘yarn-bombing’ for this new winter campaign. It teamed up with street artist group, Knit the City, to create pieces of knitted decorations for its apple trees based on social media users’ responses. The brand gave Twitter users the chance to have their handle knitted and at the end of the activity, these will be knitted together to create ‘tree cosies’ for the trees. The Bulmers range comprises Original, Pear, Crushed Red Berries, Pressed Red Grape and Bold Black Cherry.
KOPPARBERG Tucked away in the Swedish countryside in the small town of Kopparberg, you’ll find a little brewery with unique tastes. Built back in 1882, the Kopparberg Bryggeri, with its traditional red timber falu walls, remains independent and is today owned by the Bronsman family. The brewery is the home of our uniquely refreshing cider. A Swedish fruit pioneer, Kopparberg is exported to the UK and can be found in pubs and bars across the country.
REKORDERLIG CIDER Beautifully Swedish Rekorderlig Cider was the fastest growing of the top 10 cider brands in 2014, and it continues to go from strength to strength. From Rekorderlig Apple & Guava last summer to the return of its pioneering Winter Cider in October, it has continued to promote cider for all seasons. This year, Rekorderlig’s expanding on-trade presence will continue with a focus on draught and more exciting NPD, which will be accompanied by original and engaging brand activation campaigns. Working with its Global Brand Ambassador Joel Persson, Rekorderlig is also set to increase its cider cocktail offerings. Joel will continue to run masterclasses with account holders to champion the premium, must stock cider and perfect serve recipes.

SUPPLIERS GUIDE 2015 21
Jaw Brew started beer production in Glasgow in the summer of 2014 and quickly established itself as a quality craft beer manufacturer. Launching at the CAMRA festival in Glasgow, which was the first for 19 years, Jaw Brew’s ‘Drop’ was the first cask empty on the opening day. Owner and brewer Mark Hazell remarked ‘We must be doing something right as people wouldn’t be coming back for a second glass for novelty value’. There are three beers on offer from Jaw Brew, all in cask or as bottle conditioned ale in 500ml bottles. The first is Drop which is an enjoyable light, hoppy pale ale coming in at 4.2% abv; this is a good beer for the lover of all things hop. The second beer, Drift, is a golden ale more in the traditional style and has a mellow, easy going flavour with a biscuity malt base being balanced by a gentler hop profile and 4.6% abv. This beer won a Silver Award in the premium bitters category of the SIBA Scotland Beer competition. Fathom, which is Jaw Brew’s newest creation also won Silver at the same competition, in the standard mild category. The depth of taste in this rich dark ale, with treacle and liquorice notes surprises in being only 4.0% abv

JAW BREW
CALEDONIAN BREWERY We at Caledonian Brewery are passionate about beer. As drinkers’ tastes across the world are changing we went looking for inspiration and traditions from other great beer making nations for our first lager. Where else to look but in Europe with its lager traditions in Germany, the Czech Republic and even France. Each offers a distinctive hop ingredient; Hallertau Hersbrucker from Bavaria, Saaz from Bohemia and Strisselspalt from the Alsace. Hop character in lager is delicate and understated, so instead of using one single hop, we chose all three, to brew a brilliant lager, a trinity of Aroma, Flavour and Finish.
THE CLOCK Eden Brewery, Fife’s newest brewery, and the first in the St Andrews area for over 111 years, offers a range of craft beer. It’s best selling beer to date is The Clock – a traditional Scottish style beer with a hint of peppery spicy hoppy flavour which make it great with food. It is a blend which includes local malt from fields to the West of Cupar. It is called after the iconic ‘Clock’ on the wall of the Guardbridge Paper Mill which now houses the Eden Brewery. Since it’s introduction it has been their best selling beer with demand constantly outstripping supply in cask form. It is also available in 330ml bottles.
SPEYSIDE CRAFT BREWERY Our brewery makes great beer and has a strong brand association with Speyside. A team committed to customers has helped put Speyside Craft Brewery on the map. Based in Forres, Moray Speyside, and led by its young MD, Seb Jones, the brewery produces a core range of five beers in bottles and casks, with seasonal specials for draught sales. Since opening for business late 2012 the brewery has scooped many industry awards and supplied its high-quality beer to leading distributors and retailers, establishing a strong following amongst consumers. “We’re making great beer for all tastes,” said Seb, (28). “People expect quality when they see ‘Speyside’ on a label, and I believe our beer delivers in every bottle.”

Dunnet Bay Distillers are located in the spectacular bay of Dunnet, where the freshest of air and the finest of water are in abundance. Their goal is to create spirits which reflect the Caithness way and hand distil slowly, thoughtfully and passionately to create an exceptional product. Rock Rose Gin gets its name from the botanical forage which grows along the cliffs of the Pentland Firth, where Rhodiola rosea grows in abundance. A rose in the rocks! Over a thousand years ago, the Vikings would harvest wild exposed cliffs like these to gather Rhodiola rosea. This was thought to give them the extra strength on their long, arduous journeys. Rock Rose gin uses this botanical and a selection of local as well as traditional botanicals to create a unique taste from the Highlands of Scotland. They sustainably forage the Caithness countryside to hand select the very best, including the rose in the rocks, sea buckthorn, rowan berries and one special but unrevealed botanical! Each year will herald a new vintage. Like a fine wine. Working with the oldest still makers in the world its bespoke pot still, Elizabeth, is a traditional handmade copper head along with botanical vapour basket. It distils in small batches of 500 litres. This ensures tremendous care can be applied to achieve best results. Each bottle is hand waxed and signed too.
GIN
ROCK ROSE GIN
CAORUNN Caorunn is an artisanal gin from start to finish, using 5 wild, foraged botanicals from the hills surrounding Balmenach Distillery on Speyside and an intriguing handcrafted, small batch production process. Caorunn encapsulates the ruggedness, passion and charm of the Scottish Highlands and the urban sophistication of its cities. Caorunn is recognised and respected by leading gin experts and cocktail makers globally, it is extremely mixable, its versatile taste works perfectly in any classic and modern cocktail. A Modern London Dry Gin with uniquely aromatic taste, fruity, floral notes. Juniper is not overpowering, which attracts a broader audience, the new generation of gin drinkers.
EDEN.GIN The team at Eden.Mill, located in St Andrews, source their botanicals from their very own, verdant garden on the edge of the Eden estuary. It offers small batch and extremely limited edition gins, which say the company “encapsulate the very essence of St Andrew’s summers, winters, autumns and springs.” Eden.Mill craft their gins by hand from picking the berries to mashing them, before utilising infusion sacks and then boiling. The gin is then distilled and bottled and hand labelled.
MAKAR GLASGOW GIN Originally established in 1770, The Glasgow Distillery Company has drawn on the pioneering spirit of Scotland’s first licensed distilleries and is bringing back to life the tradition of metropolitan small-batch craft distillation with the launch of the first Glasgow-born gin: Makar Glasgow Gin. The enlivening power of the finest juniper berries form the heart and soul of Makar, which are complemented by seven harmonising botanicals shipped to Glasgow from around the world. Pure, vibrant and well-balanced, seven-time-distilled Makar is perfect for gin-led cocktails and invigorating with tonic. For more information visit www.glasgowdistillery.com. SUPPLIERS GUIDE 2015 29
2014 was a year of change in many respects for Tennent’s Lager. 2013’s successful partnership with Wallaces Express was taken to the next stage with the formation of Wallaces TCB, a hugely positive step for the business. T in the Park celebrated its 21st birthday and also waved goodbye to the Balado site it has called home for 17 amazing years. The 2015 festival will be staged at Strathallan Castle, an impressive 19th century castle set in 100 acres of gorgeous woodlands providing a stunning backdrop to the music. The T family welcomed three new members this year: Lemon T - a light lager with a refreshing Lemon Taste, Black T – a bit of a dark horse and Hee Haw! - an alcohol-free addition to the portfolio. An online store was also launched allowing consumers to pick up a variety of Tennent’s memorabilia including phone covers, t-shirts and the highly collectable ‘city’ pint glasses. An exciting year for Scotland’s favourite pint!
LAGER - DRAUGHT
TENNENT’S
CARLING Carling moved into No 2 position behind Tennent’s at the tail-end of 2014. Last year Carling’s market share grew from 6.6% to 8.8% - a 29% growth year on year. Figures from CGA revealed that it is now the second largest brewer in the Scottish on-trade with sales up 14.5% over the year. Initiatives which the brand owners believe have helped drive sales have included its tie-up with Sky whereby they offer up to a 30% discount on packages, and last March, distributor Matthew Clark, froze the price of Carling draught. in 2015, Carling will be helping football fans get excited for the season ahead offering them money off their new football kit on purchase of Carling in pubs across Scotland.
CARLSBERG Carlsberg Lager is languishing in sixth spot in the Scottish popularity stakes according to CGA data. Last year it launched its ‘Born To Be Chilled’, campaign - cross-portfolio ads inspired by the notion that any drink served warm is sacrilege. It also partnered with training provider CPL to create a bespoke social media training package available exclusively to its free-trade customers. The ‘Essential Guide to Social Media’ is available at a nominal fee, aims provide licensees with information, advice, hints and tips on how to get started with social media. Here’s hoping activity next year will help it increase sales in Scotland.
HEINEKEN What a year Heineken had in 2014. It’s sponsorship of the SSE Hydro was cemented, and the brand also got firmly behind the Glasgow Commonwealth Games and the MTV Awards. Next year will see the brand back the new European Rugby Champions Cup. The company also recently was named 2015 Creative Marketer of the Year. The accolade recognises companies who have distinguished themselves by inspiring innovative, global marketing of their products and who embrace and encourage creativity in their brand communications. Heineken is the highest rated beer brand equity in the world, showing 5.3% YTD growth at Q3 2014, with strong a performance across all regions.

LICENSING
HOW LICENSEES CAN STAY ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE LAW Licensing has changed quite a bit over the course of the last few years - from the Licensing (Scotland) Act 2005 to the Alcohol etc. (Scotland) Act 2010 and the Criminal Justice and Licensing (Scotland) Act 2010. There will be further changes to come with yet another Licensing Bill to be laid before Parliament before summer 2014. Here’s a quick guide to some things you need to know to stay on the right side of the law. Most important: If in doubt, take advice! Thanks to Janet Hood of Janet Hood Consulting. A MISTAKE BY YOUR STAFF COULD COST YOU YOUR LICENCE! Your licence can be revoked or suspended as a result of a mistake made by your staff. If a staff member sells alcohol to someone under 18, you, as licence holder, can be prosecuted as well as your employee. It is not enough that all your staff have 2 hours training, although if they are involved in the service, delivery or sale of alcohol that is a requirement. It is not even enough that they are personal licence holders. The law makes clear that it is your responsibility to make sure that your staff are fully up-to-date and made aware of the changes and their obligations. All of the rules about promotions are conditions of your licence. If they are breached, your licence could be suspended or even revoked. It is recommended to carry out refresher training for staff at least every six months and to remind staff at the start of each shift at least the following • Challenge 25 • Don’t serve drunks • Closing time is… and record the fact this is done. Names, dates and signatures will be sufficient. If something goes wrong, the more information and training records you have the better. You should be able to show that you have a good system in place to prevent a breach of the law. Training is very important and keeping that training refreshed and up to date is just as
32
SUPPLIERS GUIDE 2015
important. Record all training - internal to the premises and that carried out by external training providers. Keep clear records and make sure these are updated and available for inspection on the premises by police or LSO’s. You are not required to do training all by yourself but make sure if you delegate this to managers that you check it is being regularly updated and that they are recording the training and keeping the records in the premises. Also make sure those doing the training are allowed to under the legislation. For the 2 hours training, the trainer must be a personal licence holder. Even if your staff have been with you a long time and you trust them, always remember as an operator you need to protect your livelihood. I do not recommend accepting a training certificate which a new member of staff may have obtained elsewhere. You do not know how well the training was done or even if it was done. Train your staff yourself. AGE RELATED SALES – YOU MUST HAVE A POLICY FOR CHECKING YOUR CUSTOMER IS OVER 18 The minimum legal age of 18 has not changed but under the 2010 Act, premises must have a policy for checking they are not selling alcohol to persons under that age. If anyone serving believes a customer may be less than 25 years old, steps must be taken to verify the customer’s age. It is essential that all staff involved in the sale of alcohol are made aware of this policy.
NEW MANAGER? YOU HAVE JUST SEVEN DAYS TO TELL THE BOARD If the designated premises manager resigns, dies or ceases to act as premises manager for any other reason, the relevant licensing board must be notified within seven days. That is seven days – not seven working days. This is a very tight time scale. If this is missed, premises can be forced to stop trading until an application to change the premises manager is lodged. As long as the seven day notification time is met, from the date of the change to the premises manager there is a 6 week period available from the date the person left, dies or ceased to act as the premises manager in which to lodge an application with the board to change those details. The new premises manager must be a personal licence holder.
It does not have to be granted within six weeks, just lodged. If the seven day deadline is missed, the premises would not properly be able to trade until the new manager appointment was lodged. This can be deemed to be granted as soon as it is lodged with the relevant board. If the six week deadline is missed, premises would have no designated premises manager on the premises licence until an application to name a new manager is lodged. That may mean the premises have to cease selling alcohol until then. It is important these time scales are met. If there is a change to the name or address of the premises licence holder, connected person for example director or partner or premises manager, or personal licence holder working on your premises the relevant licensing board must be notified within one month of the change.
LICENSING
All staff should receive training and daily reminders which should be recorded. Posters and notices in staff areas and in the main shop are useful. Till prompts should be considered. All of this will help if a staff member fails to ask for ID from someone who is clearly under 25 years old and a test purchase failure is brought to the courts or to the licensing board’s attention. Detailed records should be kept of everything and a refusals book should be in place. If a sale is refused, this should be recorded. It is sensible to record as much information as possible, such as where ID is requested and produced. This shows a pattern of requesting ID. While that can be a challenge at a busy bar or till, the more information the better is the general rule. The policy held by each premises must be in writing and it should be checked and updated regularly. Acceptable ID is: passport, EU (photographic) driving licence; photographic ID card approved by the PASS scheme military ID, biometric immigration ID, and EU identity cards together with identity cards from Norway, Iceland, Switzerland, Liechtenstein. No other ID is currently acceptable. Make sure staff are trained to know what these forms of ID looks like - there are many fake and lookalike cards in circulation. You should note that licence holders and staff have a “right of refusal” and if ID presented is unfamiliar or unconvincing then the sale should be politely refused. Having an age verification policy in place is a mandatory condition of all premises licences and must be adhered to. It is no longer voluntary.
DISPLAYING YOUR LICENCE - AND KEEPING IT SAFE The licence comes in two parts – the summary and the main licence. The summary has to be ‘prominently’ displayed in the premises. This means it should be able to be seen by members of the public who are in the premises at all times. It should NOT be behind a counter or in an office – but should be accessible to the public. It is an offence not to display this properly. The main licence does not need to be displayed but it or a certified copy should be kept in the premises. It is an offence not to be able to produce the licence or certified copy when asked for it by the LSO or police. To avoid lost licences, a certified copy can be displayed and stored in the premises and the original kept in a safe location. Only the Clerk to a board or a solicitor can certify copy licences at present. Remember if you need to send the premises or personal licence into the Board to effect a change you must have a certified copy on the premises If the principal licence is lost or stolen, this is serious and you must report that to the police. They will give you a reference number. To get a new principal premises licence certificate, an application must be made to the relevant licensing board. There is usually a requirement to pay a fee for this service. They are likely to ask for a note of the police reference number. Without that reference number, the board may refuse to issue you a new licence. Police Scotland have stated they expect the personal licence holder themselves to report lost your lawyer. So keep the reference number safe.

LICENSING 34
PROMOTIONS : GOOD FOR BUSINESS - BUT YOU HAVE TO STICK TO THESE RULES Promotions were dealt with in the original Licensing (Scotland) Act 2005 but have been changed with the recent legislation. Mandatory conditions have been sent out by licensing boards in Scotland and every licence holder should now be aware of these. Premises can still have drinks promotions but must be careful not to breach these mandatory conditions. Each board area and their respective Licensing Standards Officers can apply slightly different views and interpretations to promotions - so take advice on these before going ahead. A “promotion” can be anything that encourages people to buy alcohol. It does not have to be advertising a specific product or brand. Even a sign saying ‘Cold Beer Sold Here’ could be considered a promotion. Things to think about include discounts and special offers. Alcohol cannot be given away free. Offers such as ‘three for £10’ are no longer acceptable if that reflects a discount. A single unit cannot be sold for more than the individual cost of all the units multi-pack price. If three cans of lager or three vodka and cokes are sold, the price for the three must be at least three times the price of the individual drinks. A single vodka and coke is sold at £1 therefore three vodkas and coke must be at least £3. You can no longer offer any of the following buy one, get one free; three for the price of two/five for the price of four and so on; cheapest free; buy six (or another quantity) and get 20% off. Off sale premises can have two alcohol display areas – one public area and a secure area (i.e. an area inaccessible to the public). In on sales premises, some boards do not require off sales areas to be shown. If you operate an on sales premises, but your licence allows you to sell alcohol for consumption off the premises, you may have to show your display areas such as behind the bar, wine fridges and similar on your plans. Changes to these areas may need a variation application so be very careful and take advice before going ahead with proposed changes. Alcohol and other goods can be displayed but there are restrictions on mixing displays of alcohol and non-alcoholic goods. These apply only to the public areas – not the secure areas, which are normally behind a counter or bar. Alcohol, non-alcoholic drinks or anything which is packaged with alcohol can be displayed.
SUPPLIERS GUIDE 2015
Branded, non-alcoholic products in this area may now be displayed in this area, such as a sporting items bearing the logo of a drinks company, or clothing with a drink’s brand name. Newspapers, magazines and other publications can also be displayed. No alcohol can be displayed outwith the alcohol display areas. Any free newspaper, magazine or other publication which contains promotion of alcohol, cannot be displayed in the main store unless the space devoted to alcohol is less than 50% of the total space. The way promotions are advertised is also regulated. This includes not only the wording (and sometimes images) on posters, displays and leaflets but also ‘A boards’ on the street, window graphics and in-store magazines. A window display for an off sale premises which is outwith its alcohol display area, may not be used for alcohol promotions. Drinks promotions cannot be run within 200 metres from the boundary of the premises. Not the boundary of the car park! The boundary is shown on the layout plan which is attached to the premises licence. Anything distributed within the 200 metre zone must not be a “drinks promotion”. Flyers that contain less than 50% of material promoting alcohol can be distributed. Bus stops and passing buses were also a concern – how can premises be held responsible for promotions which are within 200 metres of their premises but are not associated with nor controlled by the premises? New regulations confirmed that operators can only be responsible for promotions which are in connection with the premises and you have some control over them. Even in-store tannoy announcements and radio cannot carry alcohol promotions, unless they are heard only in the alcohol display area. If the store is a dedicated off sales then that may not be an issue. Promotional material from drinks companies linked to alcohol promotions must be displayed in the authorised alcohol areas only. If these items are for sale and do not constitute a drinks promotion, they can be displayed anywhere in the premises. Operators must be careful not to run promotions, such as “five pints and you get a free hat or ball”. If there are promotions being run in conjunction with sports events or other events, such as Christmas, St Patrick’s Day and so on, advice should be taken on how to incorporate the promotional goods without breaching the conditions.
that some may miss the deadline. If the course is not passed in time, or if the updated certificate not presented in time, then the licensing board has no option but to revoke the licence and you cannot reapply for five years. It is incredibly important that personal licence holders therefore get booked on a course in plenty of time. For those licence holders issued or granted after 1 September 2009, the same five year and three month deadline apply but will be calculated based on the relevant date which applies to that licence. Any personal licence holders who are unsure of their obligations should seek immediate advice. Remember refresher training dates are not noted on personal licences. It is advisable to check all the personal licences held by your premises manager and staff. Enter the date 5 years before expiry date and the expiry date and put reminders in your google diary 6 months in advance that wither refresher training or renewal of the personal licence has to take place.
PERSONAL LICENCE APPLICATIONS Personal licence applications have been made a little more difficult only because the applicant must sign the application and it cannot be signed by a solicitor or agent - some boards do permit this which of course makes sense. On the plus side, this avoids operators or managers signing applications for staff and means all staff are therefore aware of what information has been included in any application for personal licence.
WHAT THE LICENSING STANDARD OFFICER CAN DO NOW... Licensing Standards Officers have more powers introduced by the Criminal Justice and Licensing (Scotland) Act 2010. They now have powers to enter, inspect and seize items [seizing of items is not yet in force]. They can take copies of documents or entries in documents found on the premises and can seize and remove any substances, articles or documents found on the premises. They now also have the power to require any document which is stored in electronic form to be produced in a legible format. You are not required to produce a document if you could refuse to produce that document in any proceedings in any court on the grounds of confidentiality of communications. You can also refuse to produce it if to do so would incriminate that person, that person’s spouse or civil partner. Where a LSO seizes any substance, article or document, they must leave a notice on the premises stating what was seized and explaining why it was seized. Most important of all keep training and reminding your staff, keep records of each training and each reminder, note all challenges and refusals and incidents clearly and concisely, note names and numbers and reason for all police and LSO visits. If you cover your back and something goes wrong you should have a good chance in a review hearing or in court.
PERSONAL LICENCE REFRESHER TRAINING Every holder of a personal licence must pass a refresher training course within five years of the date the licence was granted issued, and present evidence that this has occurred to the licensing board within three months of that five year deadline. The refresher course is a half day version of the full course applicants had to pass in order to apply for the personal licence originally. A large number of personal licence holders were granted or issued their licence on or before 1 September 2009. For these licence holders, the refresher training must be passed before 1 September 2014 and the certificate presented to the relevant licensing board before 1 December 2014. It is strongly recommended that all personal licence holders get booked on a course as soon as possible as there is expected to be significant demand and there are concerns
LICENSING
FUNERALS - OCCASIONAL LICENCES AND EXTENDED HOURS Previously, occasional licenses and extended hours caused problems because they could not be obtained at short notice. This particularly caused problems for funerals to be held in public halls and other buildings where a function may have been arranged at less than four to six weeks notice required by most boards. Now, where the Licensing Board is satisfied that the application requires to be dealt with quickly the occasional licence can be advertised for less than 21 days to any period of not less than 24 hours. It is up to the Board to determine how short a period between 24 hours and 21 days. Extended hours to allow later opening at the start or end of a day are also given the same reduced periods, this time between 24 hours and 10 days.

Founded in 1903 by adventure driven German & British settlers in Quingdao, China. Tsingtao Beer is made using the same unique process as it was 100 years ago, brewed using a combination of Barley Malt from Canada, Australia and France. It is then combined with Hops & Rice from Western China. The process is completed using Spring Water from the Laoshan Mountains, which is where Taoism, an ancient Chinese philosophy, was born. 2015 is set to be an exciting year for Tsingtao Beer with an extensive Out Of Home campaign which will be visible in various key locations around the UK & a new interactive website due to launch in early January. Tsingtao Beer’s ‘Speaking Chinese’ campaign is set to grow this year & aims to encourage consumers to start speaking Chinese in a variety of fun & innovative new ways. Tsingtao Beer will also continue to support the Tsingtao Racing team and the renowned ‘Legacy of Taste’ Chinese restaurant competition. Both of which are set to grow even more this year. Tsingtao is the second biggest beer brand globally and is enjoying strong growth within the on-trade & off-trade market.

BIRRA MORETTI It’s no wonder that Heineken brand Birra Moretti is very popular in Scotland with the amount of Italian restaurants that the country has to offer. But despite this it failed to bring ‘The Moretti Movement’ to Scotland in 2014. Instead Londoners and Mancunians benefitted from a push by the brand to promote ‘good food and beer with family and friends’ has drawn on its Italian roots in a new campaign that aims to develop its association with ‘food occasions’ through authentic Italian events and on-trade experiences. It’s ‘Gran Tour’ experiences have not yet been finalised for 2015 here’s hoping at least one Scottish city is on the menu!
ESTRELLA DAMM Spanish beer Estrella Damm, imported and distributed by Wells & Young’s, embarked on huge marketing drive in 2013, and in 2014 it ran a new TV advertising and social media campaign for the beer this summer.consolidated its position as one of the most popular Spanish beers in the on-trade. This was helped by the launch of Estrella Damm in a 330ml can for the UK on trade earlier this year. Estrella Damm which is known as the ‘beer of Barcelona’, is currently available in a 330ml bottle and on draft in the on-trade has been a hit with UK drinkers, becoming one of the fastest growing premium world lagers in the country. The smaller 330ml format has real benefit for outlets as it is easy to stack and serve, cools quicker and is great for those events when bottles or glasses aren’t suitable.
MENABREA Italian beer brand, Menabrea announced an exclusive distribution deal with C&C Group earlier this year which led to the brand embarking on a UK marketing campaign. One of its first sponsorships was the Scots-Italian Awards and the marketing drive also included a a new website, PR, experiential sampling events, as well as social media activity through Twitter and Instagram. The beer, brewed in the Piedmont region of Italy since 1846, is well known throughout Italy, especially in its northern heartland. C&C Group have Menabrea Bionda, a 4.8% ABV pale lager in draught and packaged formats, as well as Menabrea Ambrata, a unique Italian amber beer at 5.0% ABV in 330ml bottles.

Š2014 Proximo sPiriTs UK.
Please enjoy The KraKen resPonsibly
The Kraken has burst from the realm of myth into the living world – and in to your living room. The Kraken is the UK’s fastest-growing spiced rum brand and is now launching a six figure TV and online advertising campaign. The 30 second animation features the eponymous, epicallyproportioned Kraken destroying a ship in jaw-droppingly photo-realistic high definition, to drive further brand awareness for this unique black spiced rum. The new commercial was animated by Blur Studio, the CGI powerhouse behind the bleeding-edge animation featured in films like “Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” and “Avatar” and games like “BioShock Infinite” and “Halo 4.” The spot was produced by New York based agency Dead As We Know It (DAWKI). The campaign marks a significant investment in ATL by The Kraken Rum in the UK. The campaign will run nationwide on Channel 4, E4 and More4 with banner advertising on film & music websites such as Film On, NME, Viewster, Contact Music plus Metro, Evening Standard & The Independent. The brand, distributed by Proximo Spirits UK, launched in the UK 3 years ago and is currently recording 50% growth year on year.
RUM
THE KRAKEN
LAMB’S RUM Lamb’s range includes its Lamb’s Navy Rum and Lamb’s Spiced, and this year expect to see a new Spiced Cherry Flavour. The new rum, a blend of Caribbean dark rum with spices and cherry and almond flavours, aims to capitalise say distributors Halewood on the “continued interest in spiced rum.” Its dark rum has also benefitted from its ‘True British Character’ campaign which kicked off in 2013 and continued throughout last year. Lamb’s Navy is the second best selling dark rum in the UK. It could also reap the rewards of a lower-drink driving limit in Scotland as Lamb’s Spiced is the only rum brand to have an ABV of 30%.
OLD J SPICED RUM In 1740 Admiral Edward Vernon enforced a reduction in the strength of the British Navy´s rum ration. When his men complained, Vernon suggested the addition of limes and sugar to make the drink more enjoyable. “Old J” has been created in honour of this unlikely mixologist who was known as “Old Grog”. “Old J” however brings Vernon´s concept into the 21st Century by using the finest Caribbean Rum combined with it’s Secret Blend of Spices, Sugar, Vanilla and Persian Lime.
O.V.D. Scotland accounts for 21% of all rum sales and OVD is the best selling dark rum. Last year it ran the ‘Dark Side of Rum Cocktail competition’ for the second year, with various heats throughout Scotland – from Inverness to Glasgow. The aim was to get barteders to experiment with dark rum so they could see for themselves how versatile and mixable it could be. The winner was Julija Bernatovica from the Kelvingrove Cafe. The brand owned also sponsors various other events in Scotland including the Scottish Curling Senior Championships.

As well as providing great taste and refreshment, sparkling adult soft drinks offer consumers an alternative to alcohol, from brands they know and trust to deliver on quality. These products, like the Appletiser range, are a more premium option for those that want a soft drink that won’t look out of place on a table at a dinner party or social gathering with family and friends in place of a bottle of wine. The Appletiser journey began in 1966 when Edmond Lombardi, a passionate French – Italian from the Elgin Valley near Cape Town South Africa, cleverly blended and lightly carbonated 100% natural juice from specially selected apples and created Appletiser, one of the world’s most beautifully crafted soft drinks. True to his legacy of skill and care our master blenders have sustained the magic of this seductive fruit drink. Appletiser is a gently sparkling 100% apple juice blend that contains no added sugar, preservatives or colourants and officially counts as one of your recommended 5 A Day portions of fruit and veg. ‘Superfruit’ juices are continuing to prove popular and the 2014 launch of Appletiser’s Apple and Pomegranate 275ml variant reflected this. A captivating blend of our original apple, with the addition of exotic Pomegranate juice. A rewarding treat for any moment, also 100% fruit juice and one of your recommended 5 A Day!
SOFT DRINKS
APPLETISER
FENTIMANS With the growth in boutique spirits its not surprising that soft drinks too are going down the same route. Fentimans, probably one of the better known premium soft drinks, launched a new 125ml bottle specifically for the on-trade last year, after success in the consumer markets. It’s flavours which include Fentimans Ginger Beer, Fentimans Rose Lemonade, Fentimans Tonic and Curiosity Cola are all botanically brewed. The 125ml bottles designed for the on-trade create perfect measures of classics such as gin and tonic or rum and cola.
GLOWORM This new premium mixer has been specifically blended to be mixed with select spirits. It was designed exclusively for the on-trade, and launch at the beginning of last year. The sugar-free, taurine-free mixer is available in four flavours – Raspberry & Orris, which is best served with vodka; Cucumber and apple with matches with gin; Pear, Spice and Lime which compliments rum and Ginger and Lemongrass which is perfect for bourbon. Another benefit for licensees is that the 150ml can is a single-serve.
J2O J2O brand owners Britvic launched a new £2.3m marketing campaign in November 2014 called ‘There’s Joy in the blend’. The new campaign focused on the blending of the two fruits together, and included a brand new TV advert, online (digital and social) and experiential activity. The campaign will continue throughout 2015 with Britvic also investing in a wider variety of drink serve sizes for the licensed trade. It is also offering hospitality staff free ‘perfect serve’ training with Flow Hospitality. The J2O core portfolio includes: Orange & Passionfruit, Apple & Mango, and Apple & Raspberry and it also introduces limited edition flavours throughout the year.

SUPPLIERS GUIDE 2015 63
Arbikie is a new super-premium Scottish potato vodka which has been distilled at Scotland’s newest farm-to-bottle distillery in Angus. Unlike the majority of vodka, which is made with wheat, the Arbikie brand is distilled from potatoes, giving it a distinctive flavour, as well as making it gluten free. It has been created using clear Scottish water and a blend of three distinct and flavoursome potatoes: Maris Piper, King Edwards and Cultra. Aimed at the discerning vodka drinker, Arbikie Vodka is made to enjoy simply with ice, but is also spectacular as the basis for an iconic Martini.

CÎROC CÎROC Ultra-Premium Vodka from Diageo Reserve has just announced a creative partnership with legendary photographer Mario Testino, which will run for the next 18 months. The global campaign, entitled CÎROC On Arrival, aims to bring to life the brand’s proposition: that it’s the vodka you celebrate with when you have ‘made it’. Through the lens of Mario Testino, CÎROC will capture those who are realising their dreams. CÎROC will host parties in top nightclubs, allowing consumers to engage with the campaign. A new cocktail, ‘CÎROC Blue Stone’, including CÎROC, lemon juice, vanilla syrup and soda water with a dark grape garnish, will also be introduced to key venues as part of the campaign.
SMIRNOFF Smirnoff is Scotland’s biggest vodka by a country mile. The Diageo owned brand has topped the charts for the last two decades with its nearest competitor in the UK being Russian Standard. Last September it launched a new TV ad with the strapline, ‘Filter the unnecessary, keep the good stuff.’ With the ad showing someone walking through what appears to be a pretentious, unfriendly nightclub which then transforms into a vibrant, fun party when they get to the bar and choose to drink Smirnoff. It also launched its biggest ever loyalty programme earlier in the year in a bid to arrest declining sales.
STOLICHNAYA Stolichnaya, distributed by Maxxium in the UK, launched a marketing campaign in its global markets, called ‘THE Vodka’ in September, but to date there has not been much activity around it in the UK. This may change in 2015? The new ads aim to separate Stoli from a vodka industry with “over-designed bottles and over-idealised lifestyle.” It also focused on Stoli’s pioneering attitude, having been the first vodka brand in space, and one of the first to introduce flavoured vodka.

KYLOE www.blackbullwhisky.com
Black Bull was first released to discerning drinkers in Scotland in 1864, and has since grown into a global brand, selling in over 35 markets worldwide. Black Bull still uses the same blending formula today as was used in the very beginning, so there is a large percentage of quality Speyside and Highlands malts in each of the signature blends, blended at a high malt content – as much as 90% malt in some cases – and at 50% abv (core range) or at natural cask strength (limited releases). Black Bull is still independently owned. The Shand family acquired the brand as part of their acquisition of Duncan Taylor Scotch Whisky Ltd, and have stayed true to the values and traditions of the brand since its inception in 1864. Black Bull is a key brand in the portfolio. Black Bull has been named “Best Blended Scotch Whisky in the World” on numerous occasions by the World Whisky Awards, and the Black Bull 40 Year Old and 21 Year Old recently won Gold (Outstanding) and Silver (Outstanding) awards respectively at the 2014 International Wines and Spirits Competition.

CUTTY SARK Cutty Sark was bought by the Edrington Group in 2010. Since then the company has worked hard to rejuvenate the brand. This has included new positioning, packaging, range and advertising. Last year it was all about introducing the brand to a younger, urban audience globally. This saw the brand embark on a ‘Cutty Cargo’ marketing campaign across the globe which saw it repositioned as a ‘a different whisky for younger city livers’. The campaign included taking Cutty Sark on a tour of the world’s major cultural hubs and creating an event which took place inside a giant reproduction of wooden cargo crate used to smuggle Cutty Sark whisky into America 90 years ago. The crate hasn’t quite made its way North of the Border yet... but there is always time!
FAMOUS GROUSE Scotland’s number one selling blended whisky Famous Grouse, distributed by Maxxium UK, was the official whisky provider to the Commonwealth Games in 2014 and to mark the occasion the brand put on-trade kits into more than 200 pubs. While Christmas saw the brand back on TV after spending more than £1.1M in a programming deal. Next year the 2015 Rugby World Cup takes place and with The Famous Grouse investment in Scottish Rugby over the last 20 odd years, it should reap the benefits of its association with the national team. WHYTE & MACKAY Whyte & Mackay has had an interesting year – despite the fact that the brand was up for sale, and has subsequently been sold to Philippine-based Emperador, it launched the world’s first pub on top of a crane - Whyte and Mackay’s ‘The Lion’s Clyde’. Although open for one week only from 2 June - 6 June 2014, at 150ft high, it got lots of publicity. The brand also launched a new on-trade promotion called The Juke Box of Your Life which offered consumers the chance to hear their favourite songs played by a live band at their local. All venues that participated in the promotion received a POS tool kit specifically designed to engage customers with the promotion. In 2015 look out for a fresh look, the rumour is it is rebranding.

Glengoyne Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky is Scotland’s slowest distilled whisky. It is handcrafted using air-dried barley – never peat – and matured in oak sherry casks which are seasoned for no less than six years prior to being filled with new make spirit. The award-winning Glengoyne collection offers a variety of malts for all tastes: a sweet and malty 10 year old, a zesty 12 year old, a spicy oak 15 year old, a rich and fruity 18 year old, a peppery cask strength and a warm and a spicy 21 year old. The 25 year old completes the range. Matured exclusively in handselected sherry casks, the result is a flavour of soft oak, cinnamon, stewed fruits and a Seville marmalade tang. Following a record-breaking year of award wins for Glengoyne in 2014, the brand is looking forward to another busy year featuring food matching, the return of the Auld Enemy Dinner on the eve of the Calcutta Cup match and finally, the unveiling of brand new facilities at the Glengoyne Distillery including a new maturation display, a No.1 Warehouse experience and Master of Malt tour where visitors can assume the role of Malt Master. A first for ANY whisky distillery.

BENROMACH Benromach (or Ben 10) as it is affectionately called, got a make-over last April which saw the malt appear with a fresh new look. The new packaging, say the company, “reflects the handcrafted credentials of the single malt whisky which is made in the traditional, time honoured way by just three experienced distillers at the Benromach Distillery on Speyside.” The new contemporary packaging, which includes an elegant new bottle shape with a neck and shoulder designed to resemble the shape of the Benromach stills also has hand-cut lettering and classic heritage colours. Last year Benromach 10 Years Old was also named “Best Speyside Single Malt – 12 Years and Under” at the World Whisky Awards 2014.
GLENFARCLAS Glenfarclas, the family-owned producer of award-winning Single Highland Malt Scotch Whisky, is renowned for producing Single Highland Malt Scotch Whisky in the traditional Speyside style, with a heavy Sherry influence. And now connoisseurs of whisky will be able to enjoy the full J & G Grant’s Family Cask collection at Hutchesons in Glasgow. It is one of the very few establishments worldwide which is now home to the entire 45 Family Cask vintages dating back to a 1953 rare edition up to the most recent 1998 expression. The brand also lends its name to Hutchesons Private Dining Room.
TAMDHU 10YO Since its re-launch in 2013, Tamdhu Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky has gone from strength to strength. Tamdhu has won a string of international awards including a double gold at the San Francisco Awards and a gold for design and packaging at the International Spirits Challenge. Tamdhu is aged in only the finest European and American oak sherry casks, many of which are first fill and teeming with flavour. Patience is then required to allow the casks to do their work, giving Tamdhu its wondrous natural colour and unique quality.
