he Boozy Cow in Aberdeen has been an amazing success story. Starting life as a small restaurant in Netherkirkgate a couple of years ago, it quickly outgrew the venue and recently moved into the former Amicus Apple building in Langstane Place and flourished, not only as fantastic destination for creative, freshly-made on the premises burgers, but as one of Aberdeen’s best cocktails bars. With a great weekly line-up of events including a Tuesday quiz, Wednesday acoustic

night, after work cocktail club every Friday, and weekend DJ’s, it’s definitely proving to be more than just a burger bar. With every penny of profit going to charity, and sister venues in Edinburgh and Stirling also doing extremely well with another in Dundee opening soon, Boozy is certainly going from strength to strength. he Tippling House is a subterranean late-night tavern serving boutique spirits, handcrafted cocktails, fine Scottish ales and inspired casual dining. This place is known for its creative cocktails made with passion and style by a highly trained and award-winning team of bartenders. As the barâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s own in-house artists, these guys are skilled at balancing flavours, and are more than happy to put their extensive knowledge to good use by creating customers their very own bespoke cocktail tailored to

ot only is the Ship Inn the oldest pub in Irvine (it was built in 1567 and licensed in 1754), but it is also award winning, and family run. It’s no wonder this is one of the most popular places in Ayrshire, not just for twolegged customers, but well-behaved four-legged customers too. It’s childfriendly and dog-friendly and offers a children’s menu and, would you believe it, doggy beer. It is a traditional pub, with plenty of shipping memorabilia dotted around, as

you might expect, and it offers classic pub grub – in fact, it’s steak pies are famous – there are ‘wee wans’ and ‘big wans’. But the menu offers a lot more too. The Ship Inn is situated really near the beach and there’s no better place to retire to after a walk along the shore.

his Ayr pub, in the very heart of the town, is a very popular family-run hostelry. It offers traditional values and traditional Scottish hospitality with former footballer and owner, Jim McSherry, an Ayrshire legend, providing much of the banter. The pub also enjoys a reputation for good, reasonably priced, bar food which is served at lunch time. No matter what time you visit, you’ll enjoy the Wee Windaes’ warm and friendly ambience, boosted by its pleasant and cheerful serving team. It is

a favourite haunt of shoppers and locals, but folk come from far and wide to catch up with folk here. You are just as likely to see a group of ladies enjoying a day out at the pub, as a bunch of footballers. It is not big in size, but it definitely is big when it comes to the welcome. Check out the photos around the walls, you are bound to recognise someone famous. If you are in Ayr check out the Wee Windaes – you won’t be disappointed.

Dundee & Broughty Ferry

his is an award winning family run pub, restaurant and hotel in Kirriemuir – the birthplace of Peter Pan author J.M Barrie. It won last year’s Tennent’s Quality Pint award, so if you are looking for the best pint in Scotland you’re sure to enjoy it at the Airlie Arms. As well as lager the bar also offers a good selection of malt whiskies, real ales and fine wines. It may a traditional bar but it has

some contemporary touches, and it is immaculate. To the right as you go

in there is a wee lounge area, with the public bar to the left. During the day, as well as a good bar menu, there are also pastries (some gluten free) and all locally made, to enjoy along with a great coffee. Upstairs there is a relaxed restaurant and a large function suite which can take up to 100 people.

he Anchor, or Old Anchor Inn, as it was once known until the owner decided to cut his sign writing costs, is a legend in Broughty Ferry and it deservedly won the accolade Sunday Mail Pub of the Year in 2016. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a traditional pub with a traditional heart and it is busy, busy, busy. From the moment it opens until the final bell the staff are bustling around serving people with that mix of efficiency and good Scottish banter. It appeals to all ages from youngsters to pensioners, and

everyone in between too. The pub grub on offer is tasty â&#x20AC;&#x201C; featuring the famous Anchor curry as well as a mean Steak Pie. It does an excellent Karaoke night on a Thursday... you might even get to hear pub owner Jeff Stewart sing! If you are in Broughty Ferry The Anchor is not to be missed.

he D’Arcy Thompson takes its name from Dundee University’s first professor of biology who, according to the restaurant’s owners, liked to have a good time in his local boozer with a few drams of whisky. Around 70 years after his death, this popular pub on the banks of the River Tay in Dundee’s vibrant West Port is keeping Thompson’s spirit alive. It has a quirky biology classroom inspired décor that’s far from textbook – think stripped-back, semi-industrial chic. A perfect place to

skive off studying, D’Arcy Thompson has a relaxed, bistro vibe and lovely ambience. It has a well-stocked bar and cracking cocktail list that boasts a few classics plus some more eclectic offerings, like a Purple Pilot made with lavender, Edinburgh Gin and Creme de Violette. he bar at The Fort in Broughty Ferry was beautifully refurbished a couple of years ago and now boasts an excellent collection of malt whiskies and some rare malts too. The bar marries traditional and contemporary styles and the bar itself has been hand carved in burnt mahogany, while the back gantry features bespoke gargoyles. The soft furnishings are contemporary with state-of-the-art technology ensuring an excellent sound system, and

digital TV. As well as an excellent range of whisky, the bar offers quality beers. In fact it has picked up numerous quality awards, including the famous Sunday Mail Pub of the Year accolade. Good service, good value food, and an excellent array of whiskies are supported by other spirits, quality beer, and an annual music festival. All this put this Broughty Ferry bar on the map.

he Tinsmith doesn’t take itself too seriously but it does have wonderful pub grub and great drinks. The West Port bar has a industrial feel, and as the name suggests, there is a fair bit of ‘tin-like’ surfaces around, from the distressed table tops to the silvery chairs, even some of their food is served in tin buckets. It offers live music throughout the week and as much televised sport as you can handle!

Wander to the rear of the pub and you’ll uncover a great beer garden that becomes a welcome retreat in the summer, and is often home to a BBQ when the weather is really good. Pub favourites, and Tinsmith creations, are all made fresh in The Tinsmith kitchen by the hands of some very talented chefs. It opens for breakfast, and children and dogs are also welcome in this laid back Dundee pub.

his bright, spacious, bar and restaurant, located on the corner of West Port in Dundee has truly carved out it’s own niche in the city’s social scene, thanks to its funky décor, sumptuous food and enticing cocktails. The bustling bar’s somewhat eclectic design fuses contemporary elements with items representing Dundee’s industrial heritage, including an old printing press and printing plates that give a nod to the city’s historical tag-line of “jam, jute and journalism”. With cream leather banquettes and a ceiling lined with chandeliers, customers might just feel they have been magically whisked away to a New York-style bar. However, the framed photographs of famous Scots that adorn the walls help restore a sense of location. Named after the whisky lost to evaporation during the distilling process, Angels Share stocks over 200 whiskies as well as an extensive

selection of wines and beer. But cocktails are its speciality, embodied by its house signature, Flower of Scotland, which blends raspberry vodka, champagne and sugar syrup, elegantly decorated with a floating flower head. every day, which can be enjoyed in the relaxed bar area, or out front in its secluded and quiet seating area. Free WiFi is provided for all customers. During the week they have live Scottish folk music sessions playing from 9.30pm on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, while it also hosts its own pub quiz every Tuesday at 7pm.

suggestions. With more than 320 malts on the mahogany gantry there is always a core of popular and familiar names, but the pub’s philosophy is experimental, featuring single casks, various finishes, new releases, requests, recommendations, whims and fancies. ince 1996, Indigo Yard bar and restaurant has provided the perfect setting to enjoy great food and drink in Edinburgh’s West End. This light and airy bar has a warm rustic feel - lots of wood, dark green and interesting graphics feature on the walls. It offers a great selection of beer and wine, cocktails too, and its extensive beer menu can be viewed on the board behind the bar. Staff are also quick to give advice on what’s good and what’s new to try. There’s food

on offer from brunch to late evening, and there are lots of pastries and a selection of mouthwatering macaroons too. It’s outside area is a real draw. It’s a large space, with efficient heaters, and it is nearly as popular in the winter as it is in the summer. The staff are very attentitive and friendly.

ften cited as Edinburgh’s “ginstitute”, The Jolly Botanist stocks a marvellous collection of over 80 gins and boasts an equally impressive cocktail list. Gin enthusiasts can expect classics such as The Negroni, with other more bespoke concoctions like The Last Word, a 1920s cocktail of gin, maraschino liqueur, chartreuse and lime juice. All are shaken with polished skill and poise, and served in exquisite crystal glasses. The bar’s design is

also a feast for the eyes with plenty of small quirky features to look out for. It’s decorated in a quirky mixture of Jules Verne and steam punk, with bursts of olive green, Victorian furnishings and exposed brick walls. The Jolly Botanist serves fresh homemade classic food dishes, but with a twist. All of this made it a worthy winner of New Bar of the Year at the Scottish Bar & Pub Awards 2015. Jolly good!

he Jolly Judge is a wee gem of a pub that’s hidden down a passageway on the north side of the Lawnmarket that leads into James Court. But it’s not such a well kept secret and is always mobbed, especially during evenings and weekends! The interior is cosy and traditional with low, wooden beamed ceiling, exposed brick walls and nice roaring fire. While it might not play music, The Jolly Judge always has a lovely, relaxed atmosphere, making it a

great spot to catch up with friends and enjoy a fantastic selection of draught beers, real ales, a good malt whisky or a tempting pub lunch. It might be small, but it’s packed with plenty of charm and the staff are equally charming. Located just two minutes from Edinburgh Castle, The Jolly Judge is a truly great discovery for both locals and tourists!

uniper is one of the city’s most vibrant and popular bars with a reputation for amazing cocktails and stunning views of the city skyline. The striking copper-clad bar is the focal point and contrasts perfectly with cool furnishings and a living wall. Grab a stool at the bar, a much sought after window booth or relax in the library. Given the bar’s name, it’s no surprise to see that gin lies at the heart of Juniper’s fab cocktail list. Discover classics with a modern twist, Juniper

favourites that have become classics in their own right and fabulous sharing cocktails. There’s also a good line of boutique gins on offer with some intriguing recommended serves and flavour combinations.
