A Wee Dram U

isge beatha, the water of life, or as it’s more simply known, whisky is the key staple of some of Edinburgh’s great bars. Not only are these bars loved by locals but tourists flock to them in their droves. The bars selected for this guide go above and beyond simply stocking a few, wellknown labels, catering for whisky devotees as well as inquisitive novices. Here you’ll find independent bottlings, single cask malts and drams from silent distilleries. The Bow Bar near the Grassmarket recently won the Wee Dram Whisky Bar of the Year in 2014, and its knowledgable staff will be only too happy to guide you through the pub’s diverse range of whiskies. The Cask & Still, is as its title suggests not just a great place to enjoy beer but has an excellent rang eof whiskies too. Kay’s Bar in Stockbridge is a tiny bar tucked away down a cobbled lane. It too offers great beer and great whisky, and the panter is worth hearing too. If you are up for something a bit more sophisticated then Scotch at the Balmoral doesn’t disappoint. This excellent whisky bar is a real stand out venue on George Street offering more than 400 whiskies to try. The Scotch Malt Whisky Society on Queen Street how welcomes members of the public to partake of a malt or two. Formerly only open to members, it’s move to be more inclusive is good news for locals and visitors to the city. Teuchters Bar on William Street is one of Scotland’s Scotch Whisky Embassies, and is a cosy and traditional pub, also warming is its range of whiskies. The Royal Mile plays host to the Whiski Bar which is one of the country’s premiere whisky venues, with rare and and vintage malts available, while its sister venue Whiski Rooms on North Bank Street has a specialist whisky shop and tasting rooms alongside an excellent bar and restaurant. Also on the Royal Mile is the Scotch Whisky Experience one of Scotland’s top attractions for whisky tourists, with expert tour guides taking guests through every sip of the way. 4

THE BOW BAR

80 West Bow, Victoria Street, Edinburgh EH1 2HH T: 0131 226 7667 @bow_bar

T

he Bow Bar is a traditional Scottish bar and one of Edinburgh’s premier destinations for fans of Scotch whisky; indeed, the bar was recently awarded the Wee Dram Whisky Pub of the Year at the 2014 DRAM Awards. The reason for Bow Bar’s success lies not only in its extensive whisky selection but also the expertise and friendliness of the staff behind the bar, who are always happy to talk guests through the range and offer suggestions. With more than 280 malts on the mahogany gantry there is always a core of popular and familiar names, but the pub’s philosophy is experimental, featuring single casks, various finishes, new releases, requests, recommendations, whims and fancies. The bar also offers real ales served from a row of gleaming brass tall founts, and has a great selection of world beers too. 5

C

ask & Still on Leith Walk is a celebration of the very best of Scottish whisky and beer. Two signs either side of the doorway display the bar’s mantras, reading, “Today’s Rain is Tomorrow’s Whisky” and “Where Beer is the Hero”. The back bar is host to a wide choice of whiskies, from rare and independent bottlings to more established, household names. There are six cask ales to choose from, three of which host beers from rotating guest brewers. Beers from Edinburgh’s Caledonian Brewery feature prominently, and a mural at the back of the bar depicts workers from the early beginnings of the famous brewery’s history. It also serves food all day. You really ought to try their ‘bowl food’ which includes the likes of chilli and stovies, good value and tasty too.

ay’s Bar is a great wee Victorian bar located right in the heart of Edinburgh’s New Town. It still boasts some of the original fittings from the Victorian-era, including some internal signage, whisky barrels, wood panelling, cast iron pillars and a safe. The bar is small and can get very tight during busy periods, which given the quality of cask ales, range of whiskies and tasty, Scottish food, happens often. It is a music-free bar, but during rugby matches the TV has pride of place, with Kay’s considered one of the best bars to watch rugby in Edinburgh.
