// DOT Household series DOT was my final thesis at the Royal Institute of Technology which was made for the company Rusta AB. It was made as a contribution for Rusta Design Award 2006. The task announced by Rusta AB was to create a design profile for electric products for the kitchen. More precisely, a toaster, a coffee maker, an electric kettle and a blender.

when melting. The container for the blender is made of transparent plastic, SAN plastic which is approved for contact with provisions. The reason for not using glas depended on expense efficiency benefits. Troughout the whole project we strived to design parts for the devices which would enable the production to be as cheap and simple as possible.

During the project a market investigation and a collection of facts in concerned areas was made. Furthermore, a function analysis and target group analysis were also made. Seven concepts were developed and presented for the tutor of which a combination of several concepts ended up in a final concept that was presented for Rusta AB. Chosen parts of three concepts together with further new elements resulted in a complete design profile, where a lot of work was put into establishing the main theme between the single products in the product family.

The models are designed in Rhinoceros 3 and rendered with Flamingo.

The main parts for the devices, the white and the grey, were made out of ABS plastic which has a good surface finish and glossiness and which is also very easy to produce in different colours. Another advantage of ABS is that it is also very thrust and heat durable. The choice of thermoplastic makes it easier for recycling because it is easy to seperate

// HĂ„VIS Hand truck This was a project course at the university for the company Rybergs Plast & Finmekanik AB. The assignment was to develop a motor driven hand truck to simplify transportations of heavy household appliance. It was even supposed to climb stairs by itself. The products purpose was to save the health of the delivery staff and to make it possible for only one person to deliver household appliance. The hand truck is powerful yet easy to operate with its integrated joystick. It has soft rubber air wheels for smooth running on most surfaces. The batteries for the engine that runs the hand truck in stairs can easily be charged in the car during transport. The handle is ergonomic and allows many different grips. The models are designed in Pro Engineer and Rhinoceros 3 and rendered with Flamingo.

// MSN Direct Portable MP3 player with MSN Direct This was a project that was a part of the university course, “Computer based design tools” at the Royal Institute of Technologies. The task was to design a freely chosen electronical device but with the starting point in a printed circuit board and a battery. We were in other words allowed to design any kind of elecronical device but with restrictions in size due to the use of the printed circuit board and the condition that the battery was to be able to fit in the device. The purpose of the task was to design parts of the device that could be assembled with the printed circuit board and the battery and in the end of the course could be printed in a 3D printer. Microsoft has developed a technology known as SPOT Smart Personal Object Technology. The technology permits data tranfers via the FM-network. E-mail, MSN messages, weather reports and other sort of text based services are offered for a monthly fee. Direct.msn.com offers information about all the services and functions. The only existing products that uses the technology today are a number of wristwatches from Fossil Watches.

Depending on lifestyle and personality we have different habits and therefore we need different tools to handle the information. The SPOT’s ability to receive information to all kinds of products via the FM-network is therefor as genius as it’s simple. I chose to make a portable MP3 player with SPOT (MSN Direct) capabilitys. I then added a feature that isn’t supported today but I think would be a great feature — the abbility to listen to other peoples own made playlists over the FM network. The design came from a wish of making something different with the shape. Instead of the common square shapes of gadgets I made the half circle shape to have a more organic feeling. The MP3 player is designed in Rhinoceros and rendered with Flamingo.

// MY CONCEPT CAMERA Digital camera My concept camera was one of the first design projects at the Royal Institute of Technology and the task was to create a concept for any kind of camera. It was a very free task and many students ”went crazy” with their designs. But I, on the other hand, felt a leck of clean good looking digital cameras on the market at the time, so I decided to design one on my own. The camera has a brushed aluminium case, a touch screen at back and touch buttons on the top. All to make it as clean as possible. I didn’t do any 3D model on this project. Instead I did some simple sketches and then made a physical model.

// FREE CHOICE Snuff tray This snuff tray was a part of a project performed at the university. The purpose of the project was to present some concepts for a problem and then choose one concept to go on with. For the chosen concept we were instructed to make a physical model and a model in 3D cad. All project work was supposed to follow the design process; with phase of analysis(including a market investigation, funcion analysis and a target group analysis), a concept phase (including sketchwork, imageboard and evaluation) and a design phase(including work to decide shape, colour, graphic art and a presentation model). The idea for this product came out of the recently introduced smoking ban in restaurants, bars and cafes in Sweden. The people who used snuff had always used the ashtrays to dispose their used snuff. Now that they were gone I saw a need for a replacement to stop people to throw them on the floor or put them under tables. There were actually a couple of similar products on the market at the time but they were rarely used. I thought they looked kind of cheap and I wanted to make one that was a little more classy.

Some wanted features was; prevent unwanted smell, easy to use, easy to empty and clean, easy to store, thrust durable. The cad model is designed in Rhinoceros 3 and rendered with V-ray.

// ProEngineer Pitcher This was actually task for working with surface modeling in Pro Engineer and we were to construct some sort of pitcher. Even though it was a short practice and the design itself wasn’t the most important thing I think it turned out pretty well. So I decided to do some quick renderings of the model. The model is designed in ProEngineer and rendered in Rhinoceros 3.0 with V-Ray.

// COMPETITIONS Design Night 2004 & 2005 2005 First place in a design contest arranged by the municipality of Södertälje and AstraZeneca. We were working in teams and given a task to finish in 24 hours. Me and my team won with our contribution of a health care center and a health train in Södertälje. 2004 Second place in a design contest arranged by the municipality of Södertälje. This was also a 24 hour contest and it’s purpose was to put the town of Södertälje on the map — make it attractive for tourists. My teams’ contribution was a new kind of swimming center.
