DREAM IT • BUILD IT • LOVE IT. Tile Tips - Porcelain, Stone or Ceramic?
By Jennifer Wither
So, you need new tile? Well, How do you know which tile is right for you? And what questions can you ask your tile installer…BEFORE…. you hire them? We are currently laying tile thru-out an entire house, in Port Aransas. With the help of my wonderful tile installer; I have decided to share a few tile tips I have learned throughout the years. 1. There is a difference between Porcelain, Stone and Ceramic tile. Porcelain is stronger, doesn’t break as easily and stands up to heavier traffic. Stone is a little softer but the prettiest and usually the most expensive. Ceramic is the weakest of the 3 tiles however, its glory is that it is less expensive. 2. You can tell the difference between the 3 tiles when you look at their sides. Most of the time the ceramic is a 2 or 3 tone color, hence stands out like a beacon when it is chipped. Porcelain is a much denser product; made mostly of refined sand and is usually the same color all the way thru, except for the top coat. Stone is the same color all the way thru so when

3. Sealing grout lines and stone doesn’t prevent stains it just slows them down. Sealing also needs to be done about once a year in heavy traffic. Vacation homes can go about once every couple of years, depending on the traffic.
Seaweed is one of the best gifts nature has available to gardeners. The many valuable qualities seaweed has to offer can benefit your garden year-round. Seaweed’s usefulness as mulch is particularly helpful in the hot, dry summer. With the beach in our backyard (literally for some), seaweed is a resource we should all be taking advantage of…. And to top it off, it’s FREE!
4. The most important thing a tile installer must do first is “floor prep” or prepping the floors. If he doesn’t scrape and vacuum the floors then the fine dust particles and contaminates will not allow the mortar to stick. Floating the slab or surface when and where applicable is also important as this allows the tiles to be somewhat level.
Seaweed serves as a great mulch. Mulch, in general, helps conserve water by preventing moisture from evaporating and drying out the surface of the soil. As the seaweed breaks down and the material is incorporated into the soil, the aeration of the soil is improved making it more capable of holding moisture. When used to cover the surface, mulch helps eliminate the need to weed by blocking weeds from sprouting. Additionally, unlike most bark mulch, seaweed does not bring any foreign weed seed into your garden.
5. I’d have to say for the best look and my favorite tile tip I give to you is “Undercutting the jambs and baseboards.” This trick has nothing to do with cutting the structure, because you’re only cutting decorative molding. Basically, instead of cutting the tile to conform to the crooked parameters of the molding you are cutting the molding to fit the tile. Brilliant concept and such a glorious result!!! www. homebyjwa.com To ask questions inbox Jennifer Wither or LIKE US and follow “Before and Afters” on our page Dream It, Build It, Love It

and fill and are more likely to get away in the wind, causing more waste on our beaches. Knowing that small creatures live within the seaweed, limit your impact to their habitat by gathering no more than 1/3 of the seaweed from any patch. Gathering lightly from several areas will ensure you gather enough seaweed without causing damage to the marine species in our area.
Gardening benefits
One of the major issues in all gardens is pests. Using seaweed as mulch can help cut down on the pest problems. Slugs, for instance, are greatly affected by seaweed as they are immediately repelled by salt and sharp edges. Seaweed contains a natural salt content that is unfavorable to slugs, and within a few days of being in your garden, the seaweed will dry and become sharp and “crispy”. Some mulch has been known to create hiding places for pests, but the structure of seaweed does not allow this. Seaweed is also a great natural fertilizer. As seaweed breaks down, the chemical properties will enrich your soil. Seaweed contains trace elements such as iron, zinc, calcium, sulfur, magnesium, and barium. These elements promote healthy development in plants. Using Seaweed either in a mulch or spray will strengthen plants to withstand disease and harsh weather conditions.
Gathering seaweed Although almost any seaweed is a good option for your garden, some seaweed has proven easier to work with and gather. Gathering seaweed that is mid-beach will be your best bet for collection. Seaweed closer to the water will naturally be wetter and therefore heavier to carry. Seaweed further on to the beach is more likely to have bugs willing to compete with you for their newfound home. Patches of seaweed with smaller leaf size will be easier to apply as mulch. If you find seaweed with larger leaves, it may be set aside to use to make “tea” for spray. Using onion sacks, woven poly bags, or buckets are easiest to handle when gathering seaweed. Plastic bags are harder to hold onto
Applying seaweed One of the great qualities of seaweed is how quickly it breaks down and releases beneficial elements to the soil. This does mean, however, that we must apply it to the garden rather quickly to capture all the benefits. Applying the seaweed within 36 hours of gathering should limit how much is already broken down. The seaweed should also be applied thickly. The seaweed should be at least 4-6” deep over the entire garden, covering all exposed soil to serve as effective mulch. It may seem like an overwhelming amount, but in a few days the seaweed will shrink. Reapplying in about a week will ensure your garden is covered well. Once the second layer is applied, the soil should be well maintained for about 4-6 weeks in our hot climate. Take care when spreading the seaweed to protect the plant stem. Once it dries it will naturally shrink away from the stem, but it’s a good habit to keep all mulch away from plant stems. Seaweed can also be mixed with other mulch of your choice. Our beach has more to offer every day. Next time you are out there, bring a little part of the beach home to your garden. With a little work from us all, this city will be more beautiful than ever! “Hey Nikki, check out that girls butt – it looks kind of weird, huh?”
Schlitterchillin’
By Dr. Chad Peters, Armadillo Sport Chiropractic Yeah that’s right, my wife and I have a very special relationship and because of our jobs, we have probably a little stranger conversation then you and your wife have while walking down the beach. Why would I talk about somebody else’s butt in front of my wife? Because she knows as I do (as a lot of sports professionals know) that your glutes are your most important muscle in your body for day-to-day function.
quad (thigh) flexed. My brain didn’t even have the right body part!! This is common for most people and although common, is not proper. Without this control, called motor function (the brain’s ability to control a muscle properly) you are setting yourself up for a world of hurt. It may not come now or tomorrow, but it will come. It happens because you aren’t working the way you were designed. Think of balding misaligned tires on your car. It’s going to stop at some point, or at best drive really funky.
If these muscles are working properly, if they are too short and tight or too elongated and stretched out they cause problems through your hips, IT bands, lower back and knees. Problems here would affect power outputs for athletes like football players and people lifting weights, decrease speed in runners and loss of endurance and marathoners and triathletes. You couldn’t even throw a ball to the best of your ability. What may really get you attention is that if your posterior is “off” – you may have shoulder issues, neck issues and just generally, feel like crap. Do I have your attention yet? These muscles are the biggest on your body because they are the most important. So Important in fact that in my professional opinion, when marathons and ultra-endurance athletes really start having issues, isn’t so much when they start packing on the miles, but when they lose muscle tissue, specifically in the glutes.
We now have Gluten Free Pizza!
You know how strong guys and show offs can flex their chest muscles and make them move individually? (honestly, all men trained for a year in about 8th grade to do this) – you should be able to individually contract your glutes. That’s right stand up and flex only your right butt cheek. Can you do it? 3 weeks ago I could not. I’d never heard that, not tried it. When I thought I was squeezing my butt, my
So how do you exercise these muscles. How do you get back online? The good news is the glutes are, as I stated, one of the biggest muscles in the body, they probably aren’t truly weak but just need to be reactivated. You need to get your brain back on track and paying attention to your posterior again! Try these two exercises I’ve laid out for you – stand up – put your hand on one glute and push your leg back, you should feel that muscle contract. Do it 10x, now repeat with the other side. Now do both together. Note: These exercises are best done in the privacy of your own house, preferably in the bathroom with the door locked, they are that embarrassing. Seriously, I am telling you about them and I don’t want to see you at Island Fitness doing them. They are important and functional however. Another great tip, practice (this may take a few weeks) trying to individually contract one side of your glutes. As I said, I couldn’t do it – now I can. It’s tough huh? When you’ve got it, feel free to don the speedos and get back out there- Padre Island is the best place to tan those cheeks!

Schlitterline? A constant question we get here at the Word Factory is whether the new waterline snaking its way to The Island is to supply water to Schlitterbahn. According to the City Engineer at this week’s council meeting the answer is no. The line was in fact planned long before Schlitterbahn ever was thought of, but as the cost escalated from $9 million, to $14 million, then $30 million, then $42 million it got put off for more than a decade. The first plan called for the line to cross the Laguna Madre from the west end of Laguna Shores and strike The Island near Sea Pines – hence the location of the water tower. But the cost of the new right-of-way, among other things, put the cost out of reach even though a feeder line was put in place to Laguna Shores about ten years ago.
Dr. Mike Wetz, Associate Professor of Marine Biology at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi (TAMU-CC) and Principal Investigator of the study, states “This funding will allow us to provide an objective, science-based assessment of water quality changes that are going on in Baffin Bay”. The program comprises sixteen local stakeholders which include business owners, property owners, sport fishermen and commercial fishermen.
The current line is more than forty years old and is also the main water supply for the City of Port Aransas. The new line is running parallel to the existing line and also includes the first fiber optic line to The Island.
The Celanese funds will be administered through the Coastal Bend Bays & Estuaries Program (CBBEP), a non-profit organization that works to protect and restore bays and estuaries, with 100% of the donation going to TAMU-CC. Celanese has also committed to sit on the advisory board of the Baffin Bay Study Group to help guide future scientific studies within the Baffin Bay system. The Baffin Bay Study Group was formed in 2012 to bring together scientists, natural resource managers and interested stakeholders to support interests in resolving Baffin Bay water quality and biological productivity concerns. The Baffin Bay Study Group is Co-chaired by Jace Tunnell and Scott Murray. “The generous donation by Celanese will go a long way in helping to understand the Baffin Bay system and the water quality dynamics surrounding this important estuary, as well as expand our partnerships in the Baffin Bay Study Group.” said Jace Tunnell, Director of Research and Planning at the Coastal Bend Bays & Estuaries Program. The group meets on a regular basis and interested parties are encouraged to attend. Learn more about the Baffin Bay Study Group at: http://www.cbbep. org/baffin-bay/
Five Questions for Someone Another frequent question hereabouts goes something like, “Why don’t you ask (insert name here) how, when, why, where (insert name here) is going to (insert subject here).” We hear you. So here is your chance to cut out the middleman. Send any questions, up to five, for anyone on The Island and we will get them answered and published in these pages. Come on now. This is your chance to find out who designed that giant mermaid on the front of the tee-shirt shop, or when the canals around the Ski Basin will be developed, or why we don’t have anywhere on The Island to buy long pants.
Fire in the Sky on the 4th of July Don’t’ forget to get your plans in place for the Fourth of July Island Blast! fireworks show. The show will blast off from the same spot as last year, at the west end of Whitecap next to the Padre Island Yacht Club. If you are looking for a deck party to attend and some live music head on over to Three Fathoms Bank and follow the crowd to the Mother of All Deck Parties at Ann and Harald’s.

Sharks Are There But Rarely Bite
We’ll see you there and in the meantime say hello if you see us Around The Island.
Dr. Greg Stunz, Director of the Center for Sportfish Science and Conservation, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, said this week a recent shark attack near Galveston is a reminder that while waters near Texas beaches are home to a variety of sharks they seldom attack humans.
Fireworks continued from A1 years on the combined decks of the homes between 13758 and 13764 Three Fathoms Bank. The homes belong to, among others, Ann Weber and Harald Meyer. The public is invited to attend and boaters can hear the music from the main canal. The music will kick off at 7 p.m. and end when the fireworks begin at 9 p.m.
Sharks are very common in the waters of the Gulf of Mexico and right here in the Coastal Bend, according to, Stunz, a Shark Expert and Research Scientist who often spots hundreds of sharks when he is diving both near and offshore in area waters. He says most beach swimmers have no idea that sharks are right there with them. On any given evening, he says there are likely dozens captured from Bob Hall pier.
How it began The 4th of July parade was the brainchild of Ann, Harald, and Island Moon founder Mike Ellis after a couple of particularly brutal La Posada Lighted Boat Parades when temperatures forced Islanders to dig in their closets for their fur-lined flip flops. The parade route is on the main canal, beginning near the Padre Island Yacht Club where the muster of boats begins around 6 p.m. and the parade kicks off at 7 p.m. No pre-registration is required.
Stunz says the good news is unprovoked attacks (i.e., not angler removing a hook) are extremely rare here and fatalities are almost unheard of. In fact, there are only two in recorded in Texas history, many years ago. And, only 38 unprovoked shark “attacks” have been recorded in Texas since 1911 according to the International Shark Attack File, housed at the Florida Museum of Natural History.
“The only requirement for being in the parade is you have to show up,” Harald says. “If you don’t show up then I guess you can’t be in the parade. But if you show up, well, there you go.” Last year the addition of the live music was one innovation, along with the first Island fireworks show which blasted off to great reviews. The fireworks show was the brainchild of Sharon and Jerry Watkins who raised the $16,000 needed. The first show ran about twenty-five minutes and was easily visible from anywhere on The Island, with the best views being from the boats anchored up around the Yacht Club along the main canal, and from fingertip homes on the west side of The Island. Watkins said this week he is still taking donations for this year’s show, however, the funds are already available to insure the show will take place.
Much of this recent attention on sharks was generated by the 14-year-old girl, who was recently bitten while swimming off Galveston Island. Stunz says she was likely bitten by a small shark by mistake. Ironically, one of the most common species associated with human biting and interactions is the bull shark, which is very common in our area.

The ‘Dog Days’ of Summer are here! Protect your pet.
“People on The Island really stepped up after last year’s show,” Watkins said this week. “The POA really helped us raise money through its membership, and what I can tell you is that this year we will definitely have a fireworks show on the 4th of July.”
As the dangerous heat returns and the hot days of summer come upon us, veterinarians recommend taking certain precautions to ensure your pet doesn’t suffer from any heat-related illnesses.
To donate to the fireworks show drop donations off at the POA office and they will find their way to Jerry. If you have questions about the parade or party call Harald at 361-937-2423.
“Every summer we see serious and life-threatening heat-related injuries at all of our specialty and emergency hospitals for pets across the nation,” said Dr. Jennifer Welser, chief medical officer of BluePearl. “Most of these injuries are entirely preventable and we encourage pet parents to follow these simple steps.”
So everybody get ready for the Mother of All Deck Parties and some Fire in the Sky on the 4th of July!
BluePearl doctors recommend for pets to be kept in an air conditioned environment during the heat of the day and to limit strenuous activities like running and playing. “Focus on outdoor activities either early in the morning or late in the day,”Welser recommends. If your pet does become overheated, spray the animal down with room temperature or cool water, but never ice water. Ice cold water causes a decrease in blood flow to the skin and heat can’t escape the body, which makes heat exhaustion symptoms worse. Don’t give sports drinks or electrolyte supplements to pets. Pet owners should also remember to make sure their pets have access to plenty of water at all times. Dogs cool off by panting and they do not sweat like people. Supplements like sports drinks can actually harm animals and make pets sick.

Lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea and dark red gums are all signs of heat related distress. If your pet is panting uncontrollably or collapses, take the animal to your veterinarian or nearest emergency veterinary hospital immediately.

It goes without saying, never leave a pet in an unattended vehicle during the hot summer months. “Ultimately, any time you feel your pet may be in need of medical assistance, please don’t hesitate to get them to your veterinarian as soon as possible,” said Welser. “Time and common sense are often the difference between life and death.”

Texas Department of Aging and Disabilities Services: What’s the Status?
By Todd Hunter, District 32
Last week, I wrote about the Texas Department of State Health Services undergoing the sunset review process. As a reminder, this is the process in which the state has to identify and eliminate government waste, duplication and general inefficiencies in state agencies, the Texas Legislature established the Texas Sunset Advisory Commission in 1977. The sunset review process is designed to review each of these agencies every twelve years. This review is done by taking up a certain number of the state agencies each time the Texas Legislature convenes. In this week’s article, we are going to review the Texas Department of Aging and Disabilities Services (DADS). The Texas Department of Aging and Disabilities Services is an agency that serves as one of the largest state agencies in Texas and is responsible for assisting some of the state’s most vulnerable residents. DADS oversees the long term care and support services for people who are elderly and/or those with disabilities. Today, the agency is sub-agency of the Texas Health and Human Services Commission. Additionally, the day to day operations of the agency are overseen by the agency’s commissioner who oversees the staff of the Department of Aging and Disabilities Services and implements the duties and responsibilities of the agency. According to a publication submitted to the Texas Sunset Advisory Commission by the Texas Department of Aging and Disabilities Services in May of 2014, the Department provides support services to over one million people and also operates 13 state supported living centers. This agency oversees many complex programs and facilities along with
healthcare providers here in the state of Texas. This accounts for as many as 13,700 residents that receive housing assistance through this agency in the state system. In addition, the department oversees more than 10,000 providers who assist individuals that are elderly and/or suffer from a disability. Some of the types of services that these providers are responsible for can range from home healthcare services to full time 24-hour care in nursing facilities. The Texas Department of Aging and Disabilities Services operates a total of 13 state supported living centers across the state. These centers help to aid those with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). While the department does assist with the housing of over 13,000 individuals, about 3,650 were living directly in one of the 13 state supported living centers. As a result of the sunset review process, some of the recommendations from the commission were that the Austin state supported center along with 5 other regional centers be closed and to increase the overall capacity of the remaining seven to help elevate the quality of care and try and assist those living with IDD. DADS is one of the largest agencies in the state of Texas with regards to the number of individuals that receive services from this agency. Due to its large network of services provided, the DADS executive team needs to be agile and have excellent multitasking abilities in order to be effective in crisis management related situations. A few of the key components of the agency are to be able to effectively try and integrate these healthcare services and provide assistance to those who are elderly and/ or disabled. If you are interested in learning more about the Texas Department of Aging and Disabilities Services, you can go to their website at http:// www.dads.state.tx.us/ Some of the other agencies we will review in the upcoming weeks include the State Office of Administrative Hearings, the Texas Education Agency, Department of Family and Protective Services, University Interscholastic League, as well as a number of other agencies. If you would like to learn more on your own about the Sunset Advisory Commission or other agencies undergoing the sunset review process, you can go to www.sunset.state.tx.us.
Police Blotter June 6 2:43 a.m. Began on The Island, ended in Flour Bluff Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon Corpus Christi Police Officers received a call from a 17 year old female who was in a car traveling west on the freeway with some friends and they were being followed by her father who was threatening to kill her. Officers contacted driver who said that his daughter was in the car and that he was trying to get her and take her home. The suspect was found to have an active outstanding warrant and a suspended driver’s license. Officers then contacted the driver and occupants of the other vehicle who said that they were confronted by the suspect while they were at a store on Padre Island. He made threats to kill them and they drove off because they were scared. While trying to get away from the suspect he attempted to drive his car into theirs and force them off the road. The suspect was arrested and charged with aggravated assault, a second degree felony and making terroristic threats of family violence, a class B misdemeanor. Saturday Forum to Plan the City’s Future The City of Corpus Christi is creating a new comprehensive plan, Plan CC, to guide the city’s growth through the next 20 years. To do that, the city needs the public’s input so that the plan’s goals and policies are rooted in residents’ values and hopes. Residents will have a chance to share their ideas and vision for the city’s future during a citywide forum on Saturday, June 28, at the American Bank Center. “The city’s current comprehensive plan is more than 20 years old and no longer serves the needs of this growing community,” said City Manager Ron Olson. “We see new growth all around us—new houses and apartments, new businesses, and new job opportunities. Rapid growth brings many benefits, but it also brings challenges.” As the city’s official plan, Plan CC will guide elected and public officials in making decisions about physical development and public investments that enhance quality of life, leverage
public and private investment, strengthen the city’s fiscal position and establish long-term economic competitiveness and opportunity. The plan is expected to be completed in the spring of 2015. The results from the Saturday meeting will be shared at the citywide forum, along with key characteristics of Corpus Christi today, and table discussions will allow participants to help develop citywide goals to help guide the development of the city over the next 20 years. Parking is free and families are welcome. Morning refreshments and lunch will be provided. Those unable to attend the forum may share their vision for the city through Plan CC’s virtual town hall called MindMixer, corpuschristi.mindmixer.com. The website, www.plancc2035.com, and MindMixer can be accessed from smartphones, tablets and computers. Additional, Open Houses will be held in November and a draft comprehensive plan will be available for review in early 2015.

Senior Moments
Korea During the War
By Dotson Lewis, dlewis1@stx.rr.com Special to the Island Moon After almost a year in the Korean War Zone (319 days “on the line”) my luck held. In June 1951 I “rotated’ out of Korea. The operation was known as “RCP,” (Rotation Combat Personnel). The rotation priority system was based on number of days in combat, minus the numbers of R&R’s back to Japan and the length of continuous service in the “Theater of operations.” My friend Cpl. Takasaki drove me to the Replacement Depot near Pusan, Korea where I boarded a ferry for the relatively short trip to Sasebao on the western coast of Keyshu (the southern most Japanese island) near Nagasaki. As I recall the ferry trip took about 12 hours. My travel orders allowed me 14 days in Japan to take care of any ”personal affairs” and on the 14th day I was to report to the port of Yokohama to board a MSTS (Military Sea Transport Ship) operated by the Navy for the trip back to the states. I don’t remember the name of the ship; there were about two hundred of us aboard. It was scheduled to arrive in Seattle 12 days after departing Yokohama. We were the first group of combat veterans of “The UN Korean Police Action,” other than the dead and seriously wounded, to return to the states. Prior to leaving Japan, I spent 14 days fruitlessly trying to find a way to remain in that country, even going so far as to visit a Chaplain’s office and volunteering to return to Korea. I was informed that I was shipping to the states as scheduled, and not even “an act of congress” could stop or postpone my scheduled departure for the United States. I vowed that I would return to Japan “in spite of hell or high water.” I did return almost eight months to the day and it did take an “Act of Congress.” But before I returned, I survived combat in a war of which I had never heard. As someone once said, “this is the rest of the story.”
and the Nacionalistas against Roxas in the 1946 election campaign. They did so not only because Roxas had been a collaborator but also because Osmea had promised a new law giving tenants 60 percent of the harvest, rather than the 50 percent or less that had been customary. Continued landlord- and police-instigated violence against peasant activities, including the murder of PKM leader Juan Feleo in August 1946, provoked the Huk veterans to dig up their weapons and incite a rebellion in the Central Luzon provinces. The name of the HUK movement was changed from the People’s AntiJapanese Army to the People’s Liberation Army (Hukbong Mapagpalaya ng Bayan).
Elpidio Quirino-1951
What started the whole thing? During the Japanese occupation of the Philippines, the Hukbalahap created a strong resistance army against the Japanese forces in Central Luzon. The Huk Resistance, as it became popularly known, created a stronghold against the Japanese in the villages through guerilla warfare. During this time, the area was heavily protected by Huks, and Huk justice reigned.
Meanwhile, I did get my “act of Congress” and my orders to ship to the Far East. I landed in Manila, PI not Tokyo, Japan (there must have been a “snafu,”) January 1st 1952 and was assigned to an Engineer Topographical Battalion whose headquarters was a small military post “Camp Cavite” located in Cavite City, PI which is about 22 miles southwest of Manila, PI.
The aftermath of the liberation from Japanese was characterized by chaos. The Philippine Government, following orders from the United States of America, disarmed and arrested the Huks for allegedly being communists. Harassment and abuses against peasant activists became common. Largely consisting of peasant farmers, the Huks feared for their lives as United States Army Forces in the Far East (USAFFE) and the Philippine Constabulary (civilian police) hunted them down. Civilian casualties were huge. The Huks decided to go back to the mountains and their guerrilla lifestyle as a response to supposed maltreatment by the government. They staged a rebellion against the Philippine Government when it became clear that the repression would not stop unless all former Huk soldiers and supporters were rounded up.
I was informed that the Battalions’ mission was to update the maps of the Philippines. “Map Making” was a front; the actual mission was to assist the Philippine Government forces in ending the HUK rebellion. Literally the mission was to eradicate the rebels. The majority of my fellow soldiers were WWII jungle warfare veterans. I was the first Korean Combat veteran assigned to the unit. It took me less than one day to be trained for the mission and put to work. During the training, I was reminded more than once, to never under any circumstances was the Army issued field jacket to be worn. There was a large United States flag affixed to the back which the HUKS used for target practice!
It was a rebellion staged by former Hukbalahap or Hukbo ng Bayan Laban sa Hapon (AntiJapanese Army) soldiers against the Philippine government. It started during the Japanese occupation of the Philippines in 1942 and continued during the presidency of Manuel Roxas, and ended in 1954 under the presidency of Ramon Magsaysay.
General Douglas MacArthur had jailed Luis Taruc and Casto Alejandrino, both Huk leaders, in 1945 and ordered United States forces to disarm and disband Huk guerrillas. Many guerrillas, however, concealed their weapons or fled into the mountains. The Huks were closely identified with the emerging National Peasant Union, which was strongest in the provinces of Pampanga, Bulacan, Nueva Ecija, and Tarlac and had as many as 500,000 members. As part of the left-wing Democratic Alliance, which also included urban left-wing groups and labor unions, they supported Osmea
Barnacle bucks … mountains of seaweed & evening tide. This week it has been beach salvage pickup. Although historical sites are preferred, much of the land is dry and hard making it difficult to dig a 4 inch hole less something deeper, the sand is always easy to sift through come wet or dry spells. We arrive once again at Bob Hall Pier where the mountains of seaweed have been cleaned making it a busy part of the beach. Upon arrival I strap on my gear and head to the water’s edge with the inclination that it would be the better spot to find lost jewelry. As I begin my sweep of the small mounds of seaweed recently delivered and the sand as low tide wisps the water away, I glance up to see Brother & Baby Bucks up far on the beach by the pik-nik tables scanning the soft sand. Thoughts of beer caps, modern day coins and garbage enter my mind as I watch them digging up a signal. Thoughts of shipwrecks carrying heavy payloads drift through my thoughts as the moon sends it shimmering light across the evening waves. A signal grabs my attention and pulls me back to the task at hand. Sinking my shovel I dig up the spot I find an old rusty nail. Slipping it into my pocket I move on to the next signal. As I glance back up at my 2 partners, they are still around the same area digging. After a few minutes I get another signal and dig up a bottle cap. Third time is the charm I start telling myself… as the tide pulls back the water another signal rings through, this time I dig up a strange melted object encased in crust. This is the pattern that plays through all night long. Another signal reveals a rusty old can… then another, a crusty modern day penny. Mounds of seaweed and loads of trash with a few modern day coins is what the night had in store for me.
Huk fortunes reached their peak between 1949 and 1951. Violence associated with the November 1949 presidential election, in which Elpidio Quirino was reelected on the Liberal Party ticket, led many farmers to support the Huks, and after that date there were between 11,000 and 15,000 armed Huks. Although the core of the rebellion remained in Central Luzon, Huk regional committees also were established in the provinces of Southern Tagalog, in northern Luzon, in the Visayan Islands, and in Mindanao. Antigovernment activities spread to areas outside the movement’s heartland.
Did you ever hear of the Hukbalahap Rebellion?

After about 45 minutes spent down by the water’s edge I made my way back up towards the pik-nik tables where Brother & Baby Bucks were still busy searching the soft sands. I figured that they would also have found tons of trash and maybe a few modern day coins. It seemed to me that the chances of finding lost jewelry would be the best at the water’s edge… not this night. “How goes it?” I ask casually as I approach them… together we make our way to one of the table tops and sit to take a break. Brother Bucks starts pulling a bunch of trash out of his pocket with a VERY sad & disappointed face. He says “well… lots of trash… a couple crusty pennies… a bunch of nails…” and then in almost total jubilee he pulls out 2 rings, slams them on the table, makes a little hop and says “Oh and these 2 rings!” as he starts a little victory dance in the sand. So there we have it… tons of trash and 2 shiny silver rings! The lesson for me that night was NEVER ASSUME. (Ass-u-me)! Happy Hunting and please remove & throw away the trash, and fill your holes!
Here are the finds… 2 Silver Rings (One “James Avery” currently valued at $59) 85¢ in modern day coins rusty old nails, bottle tops, cans & other misc. trash objects.

Early in 1952 an all-out offensive was started against the Huks. Our transportation to many of our objectives was provided by Sangley Naval Base which was also located in Cavite City. The transportation was mostly in the form of LCIs for the troops and LCMs for the vehicles. These Navy vessels were armed with 30 and 50 caliber machine guns which proved us with covering fire when needed. I became friendly with a Sergeant in Personell who managed to cut orders transferring me to Camp Drake in Japan. Drake was my home base was during my 1947-50 tour of duty in Japan. I finally got lucky again. After 6 weeks of combat in the jungle, I boarded a C54 for a flight to Japan. I made it!

The summer of seaweed… Well summer is officially here and so are the tourists… at least the ones who can tolerate all the seaweed. Our poor beach has been looking a bit less than pristine lately with all the Sargassum weed that’s washed ashore the past few months. It has to be hurting our tourism. I asked Mayor McMullin about the city’s plan to rid us of the multitude of ugly seaweed mountains you see about every 100 yards or so all the way from the jetty to well beyond the bollards. Keith said that barring anymore unforeseen saturations of the nasty stuff, it should all be cleaned up by the Fourth of July. The aerial reports that he’s seen, show nothing substantial heading our way. It looks like there’s a light at the end of this smelly tunnel.
The family band, Green Light Pistol, will play the Back Porch tonight. DO NOT MISS LIST The Knotty Pines played the Gaff last Thursday Kevin Schubert. They get together every now and then and make splendid joyful sounds. Derkits’ buddy, Justin Stewart, an environmental biologist who plays with Two
Shinyribs knocks it out of the park… I saw perhaps the best show I’ve seen all year last Saturday at the Back Porch. (And you know how many live music shows I go to week after week after week.) Shinyribs (Austin, TX) knocked it out of the park. In case Shinyribs played the you didn’t know, Back Porch last Friday Shinyribs is the alter-ego of Kevin night. Russell, founder and frontman for the now defunct Austin band, the Gourds, probably best known for their cover of the Snoop Dog song, Gin and Juice. I was always a big Gourd’s fan from the early times when they played with Doug Sahm, and proclaimed him their spiritual leader. The Gourds were a group of quirky genius type multi-instrumentalists/ songwriters… a kind of cross between Levon Helm, Dr. John and Wilson Pickett. The same could be said about Shinyribs. The Gourds had a great 19 year run and recorded ten studio albums and disbanded in 2013. This show at the Porch was ON FIRE. Russell had a six piece band with him, including a horn section and keys. He danced and sang and played his arsenal of strings (guitar, ukulele, mandolin, banjo) like he was born with a pick in his mouth. His music is funky and soulful and when the girls started a conga line, Russell jumped right in the middle of it. He played on his back, he played on his knees, he danced and he had the most fun of anyone there… and he stirred us until we were all covered in sweat and resembled bobble head dolls. I couldn’t stop saying, “Wow” for about two hours. Just like Doug Sahm said, “You either got to have the West Texas dust or the East Texas rust… and Shinyribs, you got both.” Got to, got to see more of this man… much more. Check out his new CD, Sweet Potato. It’s great.
Week in review… I also caught some other interesting shows last week. The Knotty Pines played the Gaff last Thursday. The Pines are a string band of roots oriented musicians including Father James Derkits (of Trinity By the Sea Episcopal Church), Bill Tweedie and another priest from Austin,
Day Suitcase is in town. Stewart, who lives in Austin had Shinyribs play on his new CD, Flagship, and is having a CD release party this Friday at Big Shell Bike on Alister Street at Brundrett from 5-8. There will also be several other artists performing at Big Shell with Stewart including Derkits, Tiffany Tuesday, and Phil Bucolo. Also on Thursday, I saw troprockers, Jerry Diaz and Hanna’s Reef, at the Back Porch. I missed the Sunset Sounds show

And it just keeps getting better and better. Tonight, Thursday the 26th, the Green Light Pistols (Burleson, TX) will play the Back Porch. This is the Wallace family band with four sisters; Brooke on fiddle, Bethany on keys, Sally on mandolin and Madalyn on percussion, a brother, Caleb on stand-up bass and a husband, Chad Fincher on guitar. All five of the siblings sing and sing well. Fincher takes the songwriting credits. When the four girls are up front on the mics, an amazing harmony emerges that only sisters can produce. And on Friday, the harmonies continue with the Robert Kuhn Band (Galveston, TX) making

at Roberts Point Park with Aloha Dave but was able to catch Pete Benz (Austin, TX) at Shorty’s and the Free Beer Band at Giggity’s later. it was quite an eventful Thursday. Pete Benz is a great entertainer. He packed the porch at Shorty’s all night. He’s got a repertoire of sing along favorites and is one funny guy on stage. Hope they have him back. On Friday, after the Shinyribs show, I saw the John Cortez blues band at Shorty’s and the hopping rockabilly veterans, Matt Hole and the Hot Rod Gang at Giggity’s… both of those shows were jumping. On Saturday, I attended the Hal Ketchum show at the Black Marlin. Ketchum had an amazing guitarist accompanying him, Kenny Grimes, who also backed him on vocals. That guy is a monster. Ketchum’s beautiful tenor voice is still beautiful and his great old songs are still great. It was another fabulous show by the new kids on the block. Later I ran by the Porch Pete Benz played Shorty’s for a little dose of Gary P. before last Thursday calling it a night.
