By Riley P. Dog To Riley for his come-from-behind win in the costume contest last Saturday night. His clever costume not only concealed the girth that some stoopid humans find problematic, it dazzled with the lights. The best feature, however, was how it repurposed his natural canine exhaust fumes. We can hardly wait to read his column about the experience.

While I was at the Back Porch a bird landed on my head. My humans said he was a dove and he just flew right in and started landing on human’s heads and then he landed on me. Some birds is crazy. Stoopid birds!

Tom Cullinan

Well you got that right Tom . Come He was a friendly guy so from behind indeed. As soon as the some humans took him to weather cooled off my humans strapped The Bird Lady look after him until he could some contraption to my back. This time learn to fly better and he was even worse than last year because this time what was coming from my behind was better learn to stay away from dogs too because some of them would try to eat him. If he landed smoke. Smoke coming out of my buttocks…. on the back of a coyote he would get ate. But I didn’t mind. I like birds just fine. Even if they land on my head. And then I heard a monkey bit a guy. I never got monkey bit but it happens around here sometimes. This time the monkey was hanging out at the Tropic Isles Trailer Park. How did a monkey get a trailer!? Stoopid monkeys! But it wasn’t a Moon Monkey. I’m the only Moon Monkey that bites and I’m not a real

Yeah, that’s smoke... That’s right, they put some cans on my buttocks and they shot smoke out and I fanned it with Expires 12/31/13 Expires 12/31/13 Expires 12/31/13 my tail. I don’t know why they do this. Stoopid Expires 12/31/13 humans.

Not only did I have smoke I had lights all over me. We went over to Dr. Christi’s and a bunch of dogs were there and there was a guy in a hat playing a guitar with two necks on it. I don’t know why he needed two necks but I think it might be because T-Joe & The Bird he plays that thing twice as good as (Also a great name my human plays his and it only has for a morning radio show) one neck so maybe that’s why.

This is National Take Your Dog to the Beach Week. Or at least it ought to be so take your dog to the beach and give him a hotdog. But whatever you do don’t make smoke shoot out of his buttocks. That’s really not good for anybody… And somebody send me a hotdog to The Save Riley P. Foundation; International Falls, Minnesota. Put it in a box that says Trick or Treat. Thank you.

SPORTS

“I Miss Mickey”

By Andy Purvis Special to the Island Moon My childhood finally ended on August 13, 1995; I was 44 years old and Mickey Mantle had just died. It’s now been eighteen years since he left us, but I can still close my eyes anytime I like and see that swing of his.

Tainted by greed and drugs The players themselves have changed and I’m not talking about bigger, faster, or stronger. I’m talking about changes in the level of performance enhanced through the use of money and drugs that make a mockery out of the first 100 years of this game. It’s almost like watching robots play. The owners, players, commissioner’s office, players’ union and fans have been duped. We have all allowed this great game to become tainted by greed and drugs, and I don’t think it can ever be changed or fixed back like it used to be. As a friend of mine used to say, “It is what it is.” So, if you’re into 9 to 8 scores with five home runs, or teams making it to the World Series with a .500 record, then I guess you don’t mind paying $40.00 for a seat behind home plate. But you know what? It isn’t the same game that I fell in love with, never will be again.

There have been so many things written about Mantle, but it still doesn’t seem to me to be enough. I am so glad I got to see him play and meet him in person. I wish my kids and grandkids could have done the same. When I see his smile in my mind, I also remember the tremendous exertion on his face when he uncoiled his bat at an oncoming pitch. It has been said that he treated each swing as if it were to be his last. You could actually hear him grunt as he swung at each pitch.

Mr. Baseball

That face was handsome, like your newspaper boys, with country bumpkin written all over it. His voice was smooth and southern, like molasses. His forearms were like anvils, large and hard. His body was compact The only real game with a low center of gravity. Those legs, although injured, It’s true that most teams set were solid and quick. He was attendance records last year explosive and it was his speed which means that entertainment that made him different from value is high on most folks’ list, other stars. I smile when I but if they could just go back remember how he ran around with me, just for an afternoon the base paths, after a home and watch one game played run. His head, always up and during the fifties, sixties or bouncing, his arms bent at a seventies; if they could just Thi Mick forty-five degree angle, with see Mantle, Mays, Clemente, his elbows in by his sides, Williams, DiMaggio, Aaron or but pointed straight out behind him. I always Berra hit; if they could watch Koufax, Seaver, thought he ran with respect for the pitcher and Gibson, Ford, or Marichal pitch; if they could the game, after hitting a homer. In the outfield witness, Sparky, Stengel, Lasorda, Weaver or he seemed to run differently after a ball, more Durocher manage…well, then they would get reckless, but always with good results. I guess it. They would understand why I’m writing he will always be the one player I think about this piece. The game was better then than it is first when speaking about the game of baseball. now. It was pure, safe and right with the world. It was the game of the people, the American Pale in comparison Pastime. So, as for me, more than ever, I still I think what I’m missing is the excitement miss Mickey Mantle and what he stood for in he generated in the sport on a daily basis. I the game of baseball. I’m reminded by the miss the way people began to stand when he words of the “Bambino” himself, Babe Ruth, approached home plate. The anticipation of who once said, “The only “real” game, I think, something incredible about to happen was is baseball.” tangible and filled the air. It made me feel good Andy Purvis is a local author. His books “In to watch him play, dashing, graceful and what the Company of Greatness” and “Remembered power. Very little about today’s game moves Greatness” are on the shelves at the local me like that. The 2012 season had been loaded Barnes and Noble, at Beamer’s Sports Grill with personal records and achievements, but 5922 S Staples, and online at many different they seemed to pale in comparison to Mantle’s sites including Amazon, bn.com, booksamillion, accomplishments. Sports Talk

Dylan entitled, “I used to care, but things have changed.” Yes, they have changed in the game of baseball, and I wrestle with whether or not I care. I assume I do care, because I’m writing this piece. I have always defended baseball and the game, but things are changing and we have no control. Most all the changes in the past have centered in and round the game itself. Dimensions of the park and playing surface, expansion, the equipment used, the expanded media environment, inventions of new pitches like the slider, and new play-off formats are some examples. But now it’s different.

Even though I knew it at the time, he really was something to watch. The truth is never pure and rarely simple, but Mickey Mantle was born to be a baseball player and nothing else. He was a genius in spikes, a comet with a hat on. Even the name (Mic-key Man-tle) worked in his favor. If you were teaching a foreigner how to say baseball in English you would just say Mickey Mantle. At the end he finally realized that what he did on the field of play mattered to a lot of people.

World Series 2013: Rare plays to end a game By Dotson Lewis, Special to the Island Moon dlewis1@stx.rr.com Game 3 of the 2013 World Series ended with an obstruction call. It was the correct call. But it is rarely called. Game 4 of the 2013 World Series ended with a pickoff play at first base. It wasn’t a questionable call at all. But it was still most certainly odd.

Rookie (on the ground) just got picked off to end the game In game 4 a rookie tried to get a substantial secondary lead, even though his run wasn’t the tying run, but got picked off, taking the bat out of the hands of one of history’s greatest postseason hitters... In an alternate reality, Wong’s game went back to the checkpoint without anyone noticing, and Carlos Beltran hit a home run we’ll talk about for decades. In this reality, we yell at the rookie. For a change Game 5 had a nice quite routine ending. There are ways to end a game other than an umpire’s alleged goof. Here are some: • balk • catcher’s interference • a baseball hitting Matt Holliday right in the head • a 3rd strike passed ball • an intentional walk wild pitch

This is probably the nexus of “not totally crazy” and “still crazy,” just ahead of obstruction. 8. The runner passes a preceding runner who is not out It happened this year: It’s probably close to triple-play rare, that. If it happened to end a World Series game, we would never hear the last of it. 7. Batting out of order Again, this happened in a game this year. But that was at the beginning of the game. There’s a chance that Don Mattingly wouldn’t have given a rip if Buster Posey made an out. Once Posey got the RBI, though, Mattingly came out to plead his case. It was like a quarterback throwing 40 yards downfield because he knows the other team jumped offside. He held on to the card just in case he needed it. At the end of a game, though, it would have to take special stupidity to bat out of order. Not only would two players have to get it wrong, but everyone on the bench would need to be so oblivious, they let it happen. 6. The batter hits while one foot is entirely outside of the batter’s box Seems implausible, but it has happened. 5. Hitter using an altered bat. 4. If the batter refuses to take his position in the batter’s box during his time at bat, the umpire shall call a strike on the batter.

Let’s look at all the different ways players can make outs and see how close we are to the pinnacle of ridiculousness. There are many ways for hitters to reach base -- fielders stepping on a rabbit and dropping the ball etc., the list would be too long. But there aren’t as many ways a hitter can be called out. Here are some odd ways to be called out. Most are rarer than obstruction.

If the batter does not take his proper position before three strikes have been called, the batter shall be declared out.

10. Appeal play to third base on a sacrifice fly

2. When a batter steps from one batter’s box to the other when the pitcher is ready to pitch

It’s rarely called. And it should only ever be called if the umpire would be confident enough to offer his pet beagle to the baseball gods as a penalty for blowing the call. If you don’t see it, you don’t even think about calling it. Umpires have been known to blow this call. I’ve seen a million different appeals to third base in this situation, where the umpire makes an annoyed safe sign, and the replay (which cannot be used) confirms the runner didn’t leave early. So imagine a game that ends on a successful appeal to third. Then imagine it’s an incorrect call. 9. Appeal to a base after a runner fails to touch it This is the first cousin of the last one. Like the appeal after a sacrifice fly, the umpire had better be sure the runner missed the base. There’s a strong chance for chicanery on a call like this.

3. Any runner is out when, after he has acquired legal possession of a base, he runs the bases in reverse order for the purpose of confusing the defense or making a travesty of the game.

1. If runner is touched by a fly ball in the infield when he is not touching his base, both runner and batter are out Umpire called runner out-the ball has just been touched by the fielder and goes into short left field. Umpire has already signaled out and stated after the game “I was concentrating on the fielder’s foot and lost sight of the ball.” Call was overturned by the other 5 umpires-Good Job! Which means it’s not going to happen at the end of Game 6 but it’s going to happen at the end of Game 7. It’s like a mathematical progression. Starts with the obstruction, continues with the pickoffs, ends with the infield-fly double play. If you can think of anything else, please call or Email…have fun!

Nineteen Cuban scientists are invited to the conference that is on United States soil for the first time in two years. In the past, it has been hard for Cuban scientists to get visas issued to attend meetings in the U.S. Cuban visas for the Tri-National Meeting that was held in Sarasota, Fla. in 2011, were withheld until the last minute. Many of the scientists planning to visit the Island University on November 3 already have their visas, while some are still waiting.

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!!

city recovered, it plunges back into madness. Only this time, instead of deadly water filling the streets, NOLA is flooded with the walking dead.” Zombex will be available for everyone to see in the 1st quarter of 2014... theaters, Red Box, Wal-Mart, Best Buy, Direct TV, Warner Cable, cable TV & Video-On Demand everywhere. How cool is that?

Did you know that, according to the New York Times, Halloween is now the third largest event in consumer spending behind Christmas and Easter. Who Folk Family/ Uncle knew? And in our little part of the world, it’s as much an adult event as it is for Lucius… the kiddos, maybe more so. Although I caught some good shows many of the bars got the ball rolling early last week. The Folk Family by having their costume contests last Revival (Magnolia, TX) and Saturday, this Thursday is the official Uncle Lucius (Austin, TX) holiday and there’s still plenty going on. In Port A, the Back Porch will have Mason Lankford show at Brewster Street Ice House was a stand-out. Folk their annual costume contest for cash of Folk Family Family is the sleeper here. It’s a prizes around 9:00. Our favorite party Revival played family band comprised of three dance band, Cruise Control will play Brewster Street last brothers and a life long buddy the event, as they do every year. I love Thursday. who read each other like a well Halloween at the Porch… I even won worn book. The voice up front, a lava lamp last year with my vampire Mason Lankford, is a rising star. chicken costume. This year I’m going as These fresh faced kids have the Aloha Zombie, we’ll see what that gets look, the sound and the songs for me… strange looks I’m sure. Mayor the long haul… definitely a band Keith always presides as MC of the to watch for. Uncle Lucius is a contest which means a ton of laughs. solid rock meets roots band with Giggity’s is also getting into the act this an edgy sound that flat rips. I’ve year with a costume contest for $150 cash seen these guys a dozen times now and Lyrical Bynge playing from 9-1. I’m and am more impressed with every told they plan to do their contest after the Kevin Galloway installment. Lead singer, Kevin Porch’s, so there’s plenty of time to take of the Uncle Galloway, is Jim Morrison in in both. The Flat’s Lounge is also having the making. Strong words? Check Lucius Band a costume contest on Thursday, Wolfjaw them out and tell me I’m wrong. played Brewster will play the honors. On Padre, Farah’s They’re tighter than a two dollar Street last and The Boathouse are also having contests this Thursday. I’m sure that will Thursday night. watch. be wild. ZOMBEX… And speaking of Halloween, my real deal honky tonk buddy from Austin, Jesse Dayton, recently wrote and directed a horror movie entitled ZOMBEX, which is just about to be released. Jesse’s Jesse Dayton and band plays the Back Malcom McDowell Porch at least once every season and on the set of is a mainstay at the ZOMBEX. famous South Austin honker, The Broken Spoke. He’s also hooked up with horror film icon, Rob Zombie, and has both acted and recorded sound tracks for his movies including Halloween 2. And Dayton’s acting experience isn’t limited to Rob Zombie’s work; he stepped off the stage of the play “Becoming Kinky” [Friedman] just as he was about to begin shooting ZOMBEX. Dayton has previewed ZOMBEX at the Cannes Film Festival and in Austin last week at the Phil Anselmo’s Housecore Horror Fest to rave reviews including one by the Austin Film Society (http://www. slackerwood.com/node/3917?utm_source=dlvr. it&utm_medium=twitter). The film stars Malcom McDowell, Sid Haig, Cory Feldman and Lew Temple. It tells the story of a postKatrina New Orleans as it deals with a second disaster, a zombie apocalypse. According to the website, “Gone is the depression and posttraumatic stress of the hurricane, thanks to the revolutionary new anti-depressant called “ZOMBEX” manufactured by a nefarious corporation. Are citizens of the Big Easy on the path to happiness, or is ZOMBEX working its dark magic? It is. Just as quickly as the

Brennen Leigh and Noel McKay played Shorty’s last Friday. Over the course of the weekend I caught sets by Noel McKay and Brennen Leigh (Austin, TX) and the Independent Thieves (Corpus Christi, TX) at Shorty’s, Ruben V (San Antonio, TX) and Mike Milligan and the Altar Boys (Austin, TX) at the Back Porch and Todd Dorn and the Sea Drifters at Giggity’s. all great shows with a little something different at every stop. I especially like the direction that Shorty’s has taken. Artists such as McKay and Leigh and the Independent Thieves offer a less commercial slant on Leslie Willey will play their acoustic theme. Shorty’s on Friday It’s really a great little setting back night. there on Shorty’s porch listening to this laid back talent of solo artists, string bands and acoustic duos. This weekend…

The great Ernie Garibay and Cats Don’t Sleep will play the Fall Back Festival at Giggity’s on Nov. 2. Fall Back Festival… Giggity’s will host the annual Fall Back Festival this Saturday, November 2nd. This perennial event is a fundraiser for the Port Aransas Community Theater (PACT) and has always been an island favorite where many local restaurants set up booths to give out samples of their cuisine and everyone could come in costume. In past years it was held in the courtyard of the Pelicans Landing shopping center on Alister, then was moved to Cinnamon Shores in 2011. It was not held last year. To get the ball rolling again and keep the tradition alive, the folks at PACT took Giggity’s up on their offer to host the event this year where it will be a wine tasting, food sampling and show with Ernie Garibay and Cat’s Don’t Sleep (7-10) plus Full Body Puppets (10:30-

It’s a lot of repeat business this weekend, but still good stuff… On Friday, November 1st, Ruben and the Rolling Jays are at Giggity’s, island pioneer, Uncle Leslie Willey, will play Shorty’s… he’s been playing there since the 50’s and is a MUST SEE and The Ones with Woody Lawson, Deb Dault and Russell “The Love Muscle” Edge will be at the Porch. On Saturday, November 2nd, Tommy Alverson and Davin James are playing a fundraiser for the Outdoor Dreams Foundation Port A Civic Center… something about teaching disabled kids how to hunt. Also on Saturday, the Gaff will have their 5th Annual Reggae Fest with Flatbroke, Alvin and the SlickPunks, Soulfiya and The Bad Chords and Melissa Brooke is at the Back Porch.

On the horizon… Briefly on the near horizon, Bushbullit (Corpus Christi, TX) will play Giggity’s on the 9th. Also on the 9th, island legends, Triggerfish, will rise from the dead to play an ARK Fundraiser at the Port A Civic Center. I know they’ve been practicing and I’ve even seen Luis Villareal a few times lately… that should be an epic show. Plus look for shows by Stevie Start, Rich Lockhart, Uel Jackson, Trysum, Fabian Rivera, Antone and the All Stars, Turnpike Troubadours, Sons of Fathers, John Cortez, Vallejo, Buster Jiggs, Out of Bounds and Ray T and the City Crew.
