Three Chords and the Truth By Ronnie Narmour ronnienarmour@gmail.com

You heard it here first… Coast Club proprietor, Joe Webb, is blowing this pop stand. Color him out of here. The new owner, Rick Nelson, took control of the popular island watering hole last Friday. Webb, a San Antonio native, opened the Coast Club eight years ago and after 18 Joe Webb years in Port A, will welcomes Rick return to the Alamo City where he plans to Nelson, the new be playing a lot of golf owner of the and not worrying about orders. Rick Coast Club in liquor Nelson and his wife Port A. Sherri moved to Port A from Dallas where Rick was a VP in the corporate world. They plan to open a kitchen in their new digs and develop the smoking patio into a bigger, nicer space. Oh… and most importantly, they do plan to keep live music going at the club. Congratulations Crazy Joe… we’re going to miss you and don’t be a stranger! And welcome to the island Rick and Sherri… you’ve bought yourselves a mighty fine club, there.

Who’s up for a road trip? I whine and whine and I whine about the tourists and as soon as they leave, I miss them… well, sort of. It’s been nice not having to fight the traffic and the crowds on the beach, but the grim reality for me is it’s the massive number of seasonal visitors that ultimately finance the higher profile acts I cover all summer long. If you look at the music calendar at the bottom of this page, you’ll notice the live music line-up on the islands are now dominated by local bands and repeat regional acts. We’re at the time of year where I’m forced to get off my lazy duff and go looking for interesting shows to tell you about… and that’s a good thing. So, now it’s time to stretch out and go into Corpus more often as well as taking some road trips to Austin and San Antonio to see what’s new. It should be fun to see what the rest of the world is up to. I tend to get tunnel vision here on the island.

Mikel Mays opens on Padre Island… There’s a new live music venue on Padre Island which is the pier house at Bob Hall Pier. Enter Mikel Mays Beachside Bar and Grill, formerly known as Barnacle Bills. The county spent a ton of money (like a couple of mil or there abouts) to add on an adjacent building next to the old pier house and move the kitchen and renovate the place and it’s great. They have “garage door” type doors all around the building that open up to a panoramic view of the dunes, the

beach, the Gulf and the pier. It’s actually quite a spectacular sight, especially when you add the comforts of a full bar and live music. They’ve been having live music on Friday and Saturday nights and Saturday and Sunday afternoons by such local favorites as Ruben Limas, John Eric, The Daze, The Rockaholics, Now and Zen and Christian Colbert. The prices are geared towards locals and are quite reasonable. They plan to have a full service restaurant open by early October serving breakfast, lunch and dinner and will eventually offer a Sunday champagne brunch and sushi bar. Owner May Nardone had this to say, “My goal is to become the place for great food, cold drinks, local live entertainment while overlooking the beach from Bob Hall Pier and enjoying the best view of the Gulf. We want Mikel May’s to be where everyone wants to come and celebrate special occasions and create lasting memories.” Trust me, this is a very cool place right on the beach. Check it out!

Aloha Dave / Jul & the Chrome Wheels…

Jul and Brandon Jolley of the Chrome Wheels played Shorty’s this weekend. I did my duty last weekend and ran around town to catch a few shows. Aloha Dave and the Tourists (Corpus Christi, TX) played the Back Porch on Friday. That’s always a kick in the head to watch the animated antics of guitarist, Ray Summy. He wins the “best contorted face and rock and roll stance” award, hands down. When I was leaving, they were playing Wooly Bully… always a crowd pleaser. After the Porch I wandered over to Shorty’s to see Jul and the Chrome Wheels (Austin, TX). This band consists of the married couple of Brandon and Jul Jolley, an exceptionally soulful couple indeed. Brandon pretty much goes through life with an arsenal of harmonicas strung across his chest like an ammunition belt, ready for any musical encounter, any time. He also plays hand drums and Jul plays an impressive guitar… they both sing like there’s no tomorrow. The locals have embraced these guys and the porch at Shorty’s was packed both Friday and Saturday.

Dillon Stowe and Bron Doyle gave a great percussion demonstration at Shorty’s last Saturday.

On Saturday, they had local percussionists Dillon Stowe and Bron Doyle backing them. At one point, Dillon and Bron took a drum solo that sounded like a full African drum band… super rhythmic and fluid! I had no idea Bron had it in him. He’s a bad mammer-jammer on those congas. You might know Bron from his golf cart rental on Avenue G.

The Toman Brothers… Randy and Russell Toman (aka: The Toman Brothers) from San Antonio played Giggity’s last Saturday night. These guys were the late Gary Stewart’s road band for many years. Back a couple of lives ago, I used to manage honky-tonks in San Antonio and was very close with all these guys (circa 1984). Gary Stewart, in case you don’t know, was Time Magazine’s “King of Honky Tonka” and had a string of million selling hits in the 70’s (Taking Me a Whiskey Trip, She’s Acting Single, I’m Drinking Doubles,, Drinkin’ Thing). There was a point in time when I ran around the country with Stewart and the Tomans and found myself in quite a few interesting situations… make that hysterical. One such situation involved watching Gary throw little cartons of milk off the top balcony of the Omni Hotel on Shoreline Drive in Corpus and scrambling to hide when he hit a cop car and milk splattered everywhere. Their show at Giggity’s was a trip down memory lane for me. I hope they bring ‘em back some time soon.
